The disease-modifying effects of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and hyperlipidemia on the risk and prognosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) have gained significant attention. We aim to evaluate the association between common vascular risk factors and cognitive impairment in patients with ALS. Patients with ALS were consecutively recruited between June 2012 and November 2019 from a tertiary referral center for ALS at the West China Hospital. Vascular risk factors (hypertension, T2DM, hyperlipidemia, overweight, and smoking) were confirmed based on clinical data. Cognitive function was evaluated by the Chinese version of Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-revised. With careful confounder adjustment, multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed separately and accumulatively to determine the association between cognitive impairment and vascular risk factors in ALS. Of 870 patients, 266 (30.6%) had cognitive impairment. No cognitive burden from vascular risk factors was found in patients with ALS. On the contrary, we first observed that T2DM (odds ratio [OR], 0.50; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.25–0.98; p = 0.04) and hyperlipidemia (OR, 0.50; 95% CI, 0.26–0.97; p = 0.04) showed protective effects against cognitive decline in ALS, adjusted for age, sex, educational level, site of onset, Revised-ALS Functional Rating Scale score, predominant upper motor neuron phenotype, family history of ALS, and the remaining vascular risk factors. Sensitivity analyses of sex did not substantially reverse the risk estimates. T2DM and hyperlipidemia decrease the risk of cognitive impairment in patients with ALS. Abstract The photovoltaic properties of solar cell based on the blends of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexoxy-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV), fullerene (C60), and ZnCdTe-alloyed nanocrystals were investigated. Comparing the spectral response of photocurrent of the MEH-PPV:C60(+ZnCdTe) nanocomposite device with that of the devices based on MEH-PPV:C60and pristine MEH-PPV, one can find that the nanocomposite device exhibits an enhanced photocurrent. In comparing the composite devices with different ZnCdTe:[MEH-PPV + C60] weight ratios of 10 wt% (D1–1), 20 wt% (D1–2), 40 wt% (D1–3), and 70 wt% (D1–4), it was found that the device D1–3exhibits the best performance. The power conversion efficiency (η) is improved doubly compared with that of the MEH-PPV:C60device.

Abstract In this paper, we synthesized a novel type II cuprous sulfide (Cu2S)–indium sulfide (In2S3) heterostructure nanocrystals with matchstick-like morphology in pure dodecanethiol. The photovoltaic properties of the heterostructure nanocrystals were investigated based on the blends of the nanocrystals and poly(2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethylhexoxy)-p-phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV). In comparison with the photovoltaic properties of the blends of Cu2S or In2S3nanocrystals alone and MEH-PPV, the power conversion efficiency of the hybrid device based on blend of Cu2S–In2S3and MEH-PPV is enhanced by ~3–5 times. This improvement is consistent with the improved exciton dissociation or separation and better charge transport abilities in type II heterostructure nanocrystals.

The effective early prediction of clinical outcomes of Parkinson's disease (PD) is of great significance in the implementation of appropriate interventions. We aimed to propose a method based on the use of baseline resting‐state functional characteristics (i.e., fractional amplitude of low‐frequency fluctuations, fALFF) to predict motor progression in PD patients. Resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed on 48 newly‐diagnosed drug‐naïve PD patients and 27 age‐ and sex‐ matched healthy controls (HCs). Two PD subgroups were defined with different annual increase of Unified PD Rating Scale Part III motor scores. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression analysis was performed to explore the baseline region‐functional indicators for PD discrimination as well as the predictors for future motor deficits. Two significant models composed of baseline fALFF values from cerebral subregions were proposed. The classification model that distinguished PD patients from HCs (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.897) showed the most significant imaging characteristics in the putamen and precentral gyrus. The other prediction model that evaluated the degree of future deterioration of motor symptoms in PD patients (AUC = 0.916) showed the most significant imaging characteristics in the superior occipital gyrus and caudate nucleus. Furthermore, the increased regional function in bilateral caudate nuclei was correlated with the lower annual increase in motor deficits in all PD patients. The caudate nucleus might be the core region responsible for future motor deficits in newly‐diagnosed PD patients, which may aid the development of disease progression preventive strategies in clinical practice. Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant inherited neurodegenerative disorder caused by CAG repeats expansion. There is a paucity of comprehensive clinical analysis in Chinese HD patients due to the low prevalence of HD in Asia. We aimed to comprehensively describe the motor, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and functional assessment in patients with HD from China. A total of 205 HD patients were assessed by the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS), the short version of Problem-Behavior Assessment (PBA-s), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to explore the independent variables correlated with neuropsychiatric subscales. The mean age of motor symptom onset was 41.8 ± 10.0 years old with a diagnostic delay of 4.3 ± 3.8 years and a median CAG repeats of 44. The patients with a positive family history had a younger onset and larger CAG expansion than the patients without a family history (p < 0.05). There was a significant increase in total motor score across disease stages (p < 0.0001). Depression (51%) was the most common neuropsychiatric symptom at all stages, whereas moderate to severe apathy commonly occurred in advanced HD stages. We found lower functional capacity and higher HAMD were independently correlated with irritability; higher HAMD and higher BDI were independently correlated with affect; male sex and higher HAMD were independently correlated with apathy. In summary, comprehensive clinical profile analysis of Chinese HD patients showed not only chorea-like movement, but psychiatric symptoms were outstanding problems and need to be detected early. Background: Recently, several rare variants of TP73 were identified as potential disease cause for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in the European population. However, further replication was still necessary, especially in cohorts with different ethnic backgrounds. Methods: To explore the genetic role of TP73 in ALS in the Asian population, we analyzed the rare protein-coding variants in 2011 patients with ALS and 3298 controls with whole-exome sequencing. Fisher's exact test was performed between each variant and disease risk, while at gene level over-representation of rare variants in patients was examined with optimized sequence kernel association test. Results: Totally 24 rare variants with minor allele frequency < 0.01 were identified, among which nine were absent in controls. One variant p.P335T was previously reported, and another three variants were in the same amino acids as the variants reported in previous studies (p.R36Q, p.R414Q, p.R78C). At gene level, rare variants of TP73 were not enriched in patients. Conclusions: Our findings did not support the genetic role of TP73 in ALS in the Chinese population. Replication of specific variants identified in patients from different cohorts might provide additional insight. The current results also broadened the mutation spectrum of TP73 and paved the way for further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
