Quizzes are a ubiquitous part of the dementia social care landscape. This article explores why. Using an ethnographic approach which draws on close analysis of communication, we examine dementia quizzes as a 'social practice', and what such a lens can tell us about their popularity in social care settings. Vignettes of real interactions drawn from ten different quizzes recorded in four different group settings attended by 28 people living with dementia and 15 staff members are presented to highlight particular issues. We show that the conditions of post-diagnosis dementia social care are uniquely well suited to an activity such as quizzes which are malleable, requiring little preparation or materials, and impose a communication framework which can help to organise the interactional space. Quizzes also draw on previously forged interactional competences, such as turn-taking and question–answer sequences, a skill that has been shown to persist even as dementia progresses. Finally, we argue that the meaning of quizzes with people with dementia feeds into wider societal values and associations attached to memory, dementia and personhood. The extent to which quizzes are akin to a 'test' or a fun and enjoyable social activity rests in how they are enacted. Evolutionary transitions in individuality are events in the history of life leading to the emergence of new levels of individuality. Recent studies have described an ecological scaffolding scenario of such transitions focused on the evolutionary consequences of an externally imposed renewing meta-population structure with limited dispersal. One difficulty for such a scenario has been explaining the stability of collective-level traits when scaffolding conditions no longer apply. Here, we show that the stability of scaffolded traits can rely on evolutionary hysteresis: even if the environment is reverted to an ancestral state, collectives do not return to ancestral phenotypes. We describe this phenomenon using a stochastic meta-population model and adaptive dynamics. Further, we show that ecological scaffolding may be limited to Goldilocks zones of the environment. We conjecture that Goldilocks zones—even if they might be rare—could act as initiators of evolutionary transitions and help to explain the near ubiquity of collective-level individuality. The stability of newly emerged collective-level traits during an evolutionary transition in individuality under the ecological-scaffolding scenario is not fully explained. Following criticism about the quality of writing in management communication and organization studies, this Forum presents arguments for change in how scholarly knowledge is communicated. The expectation today seems to be that, to get published, academic writing requires monologic and complex ways of expression. However, using formulaic and reader-exclusive language in publications limits their accessibility to a wider readership, including not only more diverse members of the disciplinary community—such as non-Anglophone scholars and junior researchers—but also those we study and write about. In our respective contributions, we argue for more meaningful communication between writers and readers achieved through writers adopting reflexive practices when crafting their texts for publication. Specifically, we suggest considering reflexivity through the following concepts: conformity and individuality, socialization, tenderness, and respect. Relationality is a multifaceted idea that displays one of the distinctive characteristics of Chinese philosophy. In Confucianism, it is primarily associated with the issue of human relations. Drawing on John Dewey's proposition of 'relationally constituted individuality', Roger T. Ames identifies a 'thick' nature in Confucian relationality whose cosmic foundation may be novel to the West. This thick relationality corresponds with a narrative approach to human nature (xing 性), inspires a Confucian neologism of 'human becomings' and challenges the conventional idea of 'human being' that implies a Western foundational individualism. Through a proposed theme of 'contextual individuality', this study aims to evaluate whether Confucian relationality could be too 'thick' for individuality (in a non-atomistic/non-foundational sense) and uncover the implication of thick relationality on the study of comparative philosophy in general. Identity as the definitive factor of one’s individuality has been extensively explored from the sociological, psychological, and political perspectives. Of particular importance is the prevailing realization of the pervasiveness of the concept of identity and its fluidity, especially concerning the transcendence of cultural binaries and spaces. According to T.S. Elliot, the discourse of aesthetics is defined by constitutive dialects and is doubly-encoded in the specific and concrete. Thus, aesthetics in literature provides a theory of senses in which production, presentation, and reception of identities, cultures, and other social phenomena can be understood and defined. Within Islamic contexts, therefore, the pursuance of a true identity definition becomes an intricate issue that necessitates the incorporation of both historical and contextual perspectives, as well as the pursuance of aesthetic expressions and experiences at the individual level. With these insights in mind, the current analysis utilized a comprehensive analytical framework that applies Eliot’s assumptions within the interactionist framework with the aim of mapping identity fluidities and ambiguities in Mohsin Hamid's The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Elif Shafak's The Forty Rules of Love. The findings indicate that Muslim cultural contexts bear apparent aesthetic experiences and ideological multiplicities at the individual level that cut across a variety of spiritual, political, social, and geographic domains. The fluidity and multiplicity of the resulting identities, thus, necessitates the application of suitable identity signifiers to ensure the rational and practical reportage of Muslim identities. In recent years, the adverse implications of organizational identification (OID) have received significant attention in the field of organizational behavior research, particularly as it is considered a critical factor in unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB). Nevertheless, the findings of previous studies are inconsistent. To explain these discrepancies, we performed a meta-analysis of 54 independent studies from January 2010 to April 2023, comprising a total of 14,836 samples, to investigate the impact of OID on UPB and the moderating effects of cultural context. The results of our study demonstrated that individualism, power distance, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, and indulgence play moderating roles in the OID – UPB relationship. Background: Patients receiving palliative care often face psychological distress, which can be challenging for clinicians to manage. Therefore, reflexive and visual journaling can be used as powerful techniques for clinician selfreflection and personal development. These journals are a form of practice wisdom, providing insights into psychological health in palliative care. Aim: This study aims to describe how patients receiving palliative care experience psychological health, explore the meaning of a palliative care clinician's work and contribute to the understanding of psychological health in palliative care through the reflexive and visual journals of clinicians. Design: Using Gibb's reflective cycle as a framework for journaling, this study employs reflexive and visual journaling through the lenses of a psychiatrist and an art therapist. Journal data were analysed using a thematic analysis approach. Setting/participants: The two first authors journaled 107 clinical encounters and created 36 pieces of response art detailing encounters with patients and their families, and clinical conversations in two palliative care centres. Results: Patient attributes and the clinical environment were observed to influence psychological health in palliative care. The patient's ability to navigate dying, maintain personhood, exert resilience and experience satisfying relationships contribute to psychological health. A clinical environment comprising clinicians with holistic competencies, systems promoting interdisciplinary collaborations and a values-based culture that promotes patient centricity strengthens the delivery of psychological care. Conclusions: Good psychological health in palliative care extends beyond psychopathology and is influenced by the cardinal elements of being human, value systems and systemic elements in the therapeutic environment. Objectives Using the concept of relational solidarity, we examine how autonomy, equality, dignity, and personhood are practiced in the care of people living with dementia at home in urban India. Methods Video interviews with 19 family carers and 25 health providers conducted in English, Hindi, and Kannada in Bengaluru between March and July 2022. Data were translated into English and thematically analyzed. Results Family carers and providers unanimously agreed that people with dementia should be respected and cared for. Concurrently, they perceived people with dementia as being "like a kid" and used the analogy of a parent–child relationship to understand their care responsibilities. This analogy informed how ethical principles such as personhood and equality were reframed in the relationships between family carers and people with dementia, as well as how carers and providers maintained the safety but undermined the autonomy of people with dementia through restricting their movements inside and outside the home. Discussion There can be relational solidarity in dementia care at home in urban India but also contradictions in the interpretations and applications of the ethical principles of autonomy, equality, dignity, and personhood. The authors, who are nursing faculty members and leaders at a faith-based institution of higher education, discuss their concept of wisdom and how it guides their teaching and practice. Wisdom is seen by them as a universal humanuniverse living experience that is inspired and cocreated with their faith and understanding of God with others. They apply the concept of wisdom in global service experiences that their institution supports. Purpose: This study examined whether female college students could accurately detect unknown male students' propensity for aggression/intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration in romantic relationships after viewing their online dating profile, as well as whether individual differences in women's IPV victimization history or attachment orientation predicted their accuracy. Method: Heterosexual adult males (N = 9, Mage = 23.40), selected from a larger sample of N = 41 males, created de-identifiable dating profiles and reported on their history of aggression and IPV perpetration within relationships. Participants (N = 453 heterosexual adult females, Mage = 21.87) then viewed all 9 dating profiles and rated their perception of each male's level of aggression/IPV perpetration risk (naïve to all other information about the person), as well as reported on their own individual characteristics (attachment, IPV victimization history). Results: Female participants were able to discriminate between males at high/medium/low levels of aggression, but were only able to discriminate between males with high/low levels of IPV perpetration history. Attachment orientation predicted the magnitude of participants' ratings of male aggression: Specifically, females higher in avoidance and lower in anxiety perceived males to be less aggressive. Additionally, participants' attachment orientation was associated with their accuracy of identifying aggression, such that females higher in attachment anxiety and lower in avoidance were found to overestimate males' aggression. Participants' IPV victimization history was unrelated to their ratings of males' aggression/IPV perpetration risk. This research study expatiates upon investigation of social systems that coerce women towards madness and provide justifications for labeling them as mad women. It examines the patterns of normalization of madness of women strategized by phallocentric forces to formulate shierarchies of dominance and to maintain them. The study is set to explore how patriarchal mechanisms suppress all opposing voices against them and represent such deviant elements as mad. Moreover, the study evaluates feministic approaches that seek to contradict the established patriarchal normalities. Importantly, the study scrutinizes the changing feministic attitudes in the European and American landscapes during the nineteenth and twentieth century. To strengthen its findings, the study is premised on fiction produced by female writers from American literary landscape. It includes Kate Chopin's The Awakening (1899) and Silvia Plath's The Bell Jar (1963). The study aims to carry on textual analysis of the selected texts to explore the reasons of women's madness and representation of such women in literary landscapes. As the study explores the nature of existing relationship between both genders, it applies certain conceptions of feminist criticism to scrutinize power relationship between the genders. The study finds that female tendency to challenge established patriarchal norms provides the dominant forces a justification to pronounce defiant women as mad. Women's expectation of equal social, political and economic patterns is conceived of as a threat to prevailing dominant power structures. The proposal to literaturize the school through the perspective of literature for infancy is the subject of this article. We discuss the need for initial formation courses for teachers to focus on working with literary texts for infancy as a strategy to enter into the subjectivities intertwined by the memory and affections of future teachers. For this purpose, our tessitura goes beyond the thread of Antonio Candido's humanization when defending the right to literature as an incompressible asset, mainly in the school space. We use theories from the area of reading to reinforce our stance in defense of the need for literature to occupy classrooms and libraries, as well as corridors, bars and cafeterias. Thus, two reading mediation actions based on texts for children are described to reinforce that the literaturization of schools involves the training of teachers who are attentive to different sociocultural contexts. As results, we highlight the products developed from the actions. These expressions demonstrate how the texts touched each person in their individuality and triggered memories and affections that meet the humanizing project of literature based on the literaturization of the school. The article aims to analyse the philosophical content of selected aspects of the literary theory of Friedrich Schlegel -- one of the initiators and main founders of the Jena Romantic school. Schlegel is primarily known as a brilliant literary critic who popularised the notion of Romantic poetry. Romantic poetry, however, is not only a fundamental concept of the new school of literary studies, but also an important element of Schlegel's philosophy of man, describing the model of modern humanity. In this paper, I assume that Schlegel's literary theory is a mirror that generates a reflection of Romantic man. In this perspective, all the main features of Romantic literature -- self-consciousness, reflexivity, freedom, individuality, the striving for the infinite or organicism -- in fact turn out to be attributes of its creator. Romantic love dominates, at least at first glance. As a hegemonic form of love, it seems so ubiquitous that "love" and "romantic love" as well as "romantic" and "love-related" are used synonymously. However, there is resistance to this dominance, with calls for the "end of the romantic dictate", as the name of a recently published book by Andrea Newerla (2023) suggests. Protagonists of non-exclusive forms of love in particular complain of a social compulsion towards monogamous romance and write against "society" and its narratives and cultural codes. In the following, a model of forms of love is presented that aim to avoid the pitfalls of previous hegemonic normativity. This is developed on the basis of romantic love, which is a historically and culturally very specific form of love. Subsequently, the forms that love takes today and the social and cultural conditions to which it responds, which are negotiated under the terms of contingency culture and competitive society, are shown by way of example. Only one of Europe's micro-states is a republic: the Republic of San Marino. This non-EU Member State is an enclave of Italy and sits in a mountainous region of the Apennine Mountains. Given its proximity to the EU, being fully surrounded by it, and the extent to which integration through law has occurred within the EU, the law and policy of EU external relations demands that EU-San Marino relations must exist in some way. Yet the EU's legal relations with third states in Europe have evolved along different trajectories, accounting for the individuality and uniqueness of each. As uncovered in this article, the EU-Sammarinese relationship stretches across a limited array of international agreements, with their own specific width and depth. Taken together, this mishmash of accords, and the way in which regulatory alignment is designed by them, portrays an outdated model of relations that need an update. With an envisaged association agreement between the EU and San Marino on the horizon, this article analyses the legal relations of the parties as they presently stand, accounting for their history, the substance of the international agreements, and the promise of what future legal relations ought to achieve between them. It delves into how Iqbal reconciles the apparent dichotomy between human autonomy and divine predestination by advocating for a harmonious relationship between the two, grounded in a deep understanding of the Qur'anic worldview. Current understanding of Mill as a founding father of liberalism is a Cold War creation. Discarding this conception opens the way to a general reassessment of his thought: who was the historical Mill? He did not define himself as liberal and there is no simple template. Most obviously he is a pluralist, defined by a plural heritage received through his father. This framework permitted great creativity in political and social theory, but it was diffuse. The one clear unifying theme is a unique conception of a hierarchy of intellect founded on the inexorable accumulation of positive knowledge. The one important exception to this is political economy. What stands out overall is his individuality, where Mill embodies his own ideal. So apart from political economy, where he could be identified in more conventional terms, his nineteenth-century legacy was personal and incalculably diffusive rather than doctrinaire. To justify the individuality of design as a discipline, researchers repeatedly separated it from other disciplines while underscoring the integration of design in those disciplines. We resolve this apparent paradox by recognizing that people have knowledge, abilities, and tasks that can be attributed to several disciplines. We emphasize a collaborative effect-centered understanding and execution of problem-solving rather than an individual and design-centered one to enable each person to perform to the best of their abilities. Therefore, we introduce the newly developed "effect method," which, by researching defined interrelations between subjects (terms considered as single entities) and systems (terms considered as multipart entities), empowers people to identify and understand relevant problems and solution approaches. The interrelations are defined by effects to be prevented (problem) or achieved (solution). Based on this, the effect method enables the development of system-compatible solution concepts. As a result, each person's creativity, knowledge, and best abilities can contribute to the collaborative development of relevant solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stanley Cavell's account of aesthetic judgment has two components. The first is a feeling: the judge has to see, hear, or 'dig' something in the object being judged; there has to be an 'emotion' that the judge feels and expresses. The second is the 'discipline of accounting for [the judgment]', a readiness to argue for one's aesthetic judgment in the face of disagreement. The discipline of accounting for one's aesthetic judgments involves what Nick Riggle has called a norm of convergence: the judge aims to get one's audience to taste, see, or hear what the judge tastes or sees or hears in the object being judged. Because of the unmistakable difficulty in reaching agreement in aesthetic judgment, Riggle has denied that aesthetic judgment requires a convergence norm and has proposed instead that it requires 'a kind of harmony of individuality' (which Riggle calls 'vibing'). We argue that Cavell offers a version of the convergence norm that is distinct from those that Riggle criticizes, namely Kant's demand for agreement and Andy Egan's presupposition of similarity in dispositions in 'non-defective' aesthetic conversations. Cavell's version of the convergence norm is 'the hope of agreement'. One can hope that one's audience will agree with one's aesthetic judgments even when one isn't in a position to demand agreement or to presuppose similarity in the dispositions that would make agreement more likely. Cavell's distinct convergence norm avoids Riggle's criticisms and contributes to a richer account of what's going on when we disagree about aesthetic matters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We are trying here to establish the symptomatic value of our interest, both aesthetic and intellectual interest in vagueness, as a figure of indeterminacy, of potential... The book "The Belief in Intuition: Individuality and Authority in Henri Bergson and Max Scheler" by Adriana Alfaro Altamirano seeks to recover the political reflection of Max Scheler and Henri Bergson, two prominent philosophers of the 20th century whose influence has diminished over time. The author proposes that the thinking of Scheler and Bergson, based on intuition, offers an alternative to liberalism in the social and political sphere. These authors defend the irreducible singularity of each person as the basis of freedom and individuality, and propose a vision of empathy and authority based on exemplarity. The aim of this discussion paper is to explore factors and contexts that influence how nurses might conceptualise and assign personhood for people with altered consciousness, cognition and behaviours. While a biomedical framing is founded upon a dichotomy between the body and self, such that the body can be subjected to a medical and objectifying gaze, relational theories of self, multiculturalism and technological advances for life‐sustaining interventions present new dilemmas which necessitate discussion about what constitutes personhood. The concept of personhood is dynamic and evolving: where historical constructs of rationality, agency, autonomy and a conscious mind once formed the basis for personhood, these ideas have been challenged to encompass embodied, relational, social and cultural paradigms of selfhood. Themes in this discussion include: the right to personhood, mind–body dualism versus the embodied self; personhood as consciousness, rationality and narratives of self; social relational contexts of personhood and cultural contexts of personhood. Patricia Benner's and Christine Tanner's clinical judgement model is then applied to consider the implications for nursing care that seeks to reflexively incorporate personhood. Nurse clinicians are able to move between conceptions of personhood and act to support the body, as well as presumed autonomy and relational, social and cultural personhood. In doing so, they use analytical, intuitive and narrative reasoning which prioritises autonomous constructions of self. Neuropalliative care developed to address the needs of patients living with life‐limiting neurologic disease. One critical consideration is that disease‐related changes to cognition, communication, and function challenge illness experiences and care practices. We conducted an ethnography to understand neuropalliative care as a phenomenon; how it was experienced, provided, conceptualized. Personhood served as our conceptual framework; with its long philosophical history and important place in nursing theory, we examined the extent to which it captured neuropalliative experiences and concerns. Personhood contextualized complex losses, aligning the impact of functional and relational changes. Cognition, communication, and functional alterations stretched conceptions of personhood, insinuating it can be relational, fluid, adaptive. Although normative conceptions of personhood guided research and decision‐making, ethical considerations suggested personhood could be transformed, remade. We consider the implications of our findings through three themes. First, we examine how literature on illness experience fails to integrate the realities of people living with and dying from neurologic disease; we counter this by interrogating the concept of experience. Second, we turn to Ricoeur's work on recognition to illuminate relational conceptions of personhood to inform care practices. Finally, we reflect on how personhood can bridge the gap left by functional changes, enhance relational engagement, and promote dignity at the end of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The topic of an autonomous system initiating trust repair has generated intense interest from researchers and has led to a stream of empirical works studying the impact of different trust repair strategies. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a clear pattern of results or systematicity in the experimental manipulations. This is likely due to a lack of a coherent model or theoretical framework of trust repair. We present a possible theoretical model that may explain and predict how different trust repair strategies may work with different autonomous systems, in different situations, and with different people. We have adapted and applied a well-established social cognition theory that has successfully explained and predicted complex attitudinal and behavioural phenomena. The model suggests that significant variance in trust repair results may be partly due to individual differences (e.g. motivation, cognitive abilities), which have not been extensively examined in the literature, and confounded or uncontrolled study parameters (e.g. timing of trust measurement, repair frequency, workload). We hope that this theoretical model stimulates discussion toward a more theory-driven trust repair research agenda to understand basic underlying mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Self-esteem plays a significant role in an individual's healthy development. However, it is not uncommon for Chinese people to suffer from lower self-esteem. The cultural expectation of respect for and obedience to authorities often increases the challenges for Chinese people to achieve individuation. Subjectivity of being and the authenticity of a true self is ignored and even must be renounced in order to fit oneself into the cultural and societal system. What can psychotherapy do to enhance self-esteem? Psychoanalytic psychotherapy provides a way for individuation through enhancing realistic self-esteem. In the psychoanalytic and psychodynamic situation, patients' individuality is encouraged. Moreover, it provides a new relationship where ruptures can be dealt with for the purpose of personal growth. Self psychology will be the theoretical foundation for this paper to illustrate that enhancing realistic self-esteem can a be a maturational step for individuation in working with Chinese patients. Two cases are presented to illustrate how psychoanalytic psychotherapy can help with self-esteem. Both cases involve young Chinese people struggling with damaged self-esteem. In the first case, I will focus on how interpretations can help the patient gain insights and to encourage further exploration. Experimental cinema has been considered a format beyond the dominant stream of narrative cinema, focusing on the exploration of cinema's formal components. On this basis, the current article aims to analyze the main elements of this filmmaking format in search of an aesthetic framework. Therefore, the theoretical approach of empiricism in the philosophy of art is employed, as the views of its thinkers can offer insights into the aesthetic dimensions of this type of cinema. The method of this research is descriptive-analytical with a comparative approach, and by describing the main components of experimental cinema, it moves toward an analytical reading of these characteristics in the opinions of empiricists. The research findings indicate that experimental cinema possesses distinctive characteristics, the most important being its effect on human (sensory) perception. This perception is not bound by the narrative, logical, or other constraints of the dominant popular cinema, but rather challenges the viewer, moving toward psychological and technical innovation based on sensory, intellectual, and even instrumental foundations, and most importantly, a kind of intuition in perception. Hence, a conventional machine-causal aesthetic framework cannot accommodate such a non-normative, abstract, and fluid goal in artistic creation and perception. The research evidence suggests that the organon of this sensory-driven experimental cinema can be grounded in the aesthetics of 18th-century empiricists. This thought considers beauty a subjective issue, whose reference is not the object itself but the individual's mind, which plays the main role in defining beauty. In fact, aesthetic subjectivism denies the internality of aesthetic qualities in the essence of objects and claims that what makes an object beautiful is the unique reaction it evokes in the subject. This intuitive understanding goes so far as to reject the idea of beauty as proportionality, dismissing it as a goal tied to utility or perfection; beauty, in this view, is not seen as the product of reason. As a result, this system of thought prioritizes intuition over logic and causal rules in the realm of creation, understanding, and judgment, all of which are based on individual experiences in sensory perception-the essence of experimental cinema. Dystopia is a place where everything is disastrously wrong. Dystopian literature embodies recurring elements that construct a vivid and often unsettling description of oppressive societies. Dystopian literature explores fictitious societies or worlds characterised by oppressive governance and dehumanisation. Several works of dystopian literature centre around the concept of totalitarianism, offering readers an opportunity to critique this system and emphasise the significance of individuality and freedom that is suppressed under the rule of totalitarianism. This research paper delves into the convoluted realms of dystopian literature, focusing on the pervasive composition of the loss of identity and individuality in the face of oppressive regimes. Employing a qualitative research methodology, the study centres its analysis on Margaret Atwood's seminal work, The Handmaid's Tale, to unravel the profound impacts of authoritarian control on the characters' sense of self. The investigation extends by examining the plight of women in dystopian settings, illuminating the multifaceted practices in which they grapple with the erasure of their individual identities. Through a careful examination of the characters' experiences, the paper aims to shed light on the nuanced nature of gender-based oppression, presenting how women become symbolic of a broader societal scrabble against totalitarian rule. By investigating the inimical consequences of technological advancements, the study emphasises the erosion of personal freedoms and the subjugation of autonomy that often accompanies the omnipresence of advanced surveillance and control mechanisms. The current study examined the novel role of solo status, or being the only Muslim in different settings, in the relationship between discrimination and distress for Muslim women in the United States who wear the hijab, the Islamic headscarf, and Muslim women who do not wear the hijab. Psychological distress was examined through symptoms of anxiety, somatization, and paranoia. Results from a sample of 123 Muslim women in the United States showed that the impact of solo status was different for Muslim women who always wear the hijab compared to Muslim women who never wear the hijab. Namely, high solo status exacerbated the impact of discrimination on all psychological symptoms for Muslim women who wear the hijab. In contrast, low solo status compounded the effect of discrimination on all psychological symptoms for Muslim women who never wear the hijab. Many people in the Netherlands are familiar with the image of Erasmus, who has become a symbol of wisdom and independence of spirit in this country. Yet it is difficult to truly understand this thinker, in part because he constantly played with language and perspectives and enjoyed wrong-footing readers. At the same time, this playfulness in Erasmus is exactly what makes him so interesting, especially to today's readers. The philosopher developed a way of thinking that appeals to modern-day people, who value their own individuality but also need shared values: the question of what binds us. This essay is an attempt to unravel Erasmus' challenging thinking and his philosophical principles, in the expectation that his method of thinking could be helpful in the current discussion about the need for shared values. Drawing on narratives recorded from family members of residents in long-term care homes in Ontario, Canada, during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, in this paper, I present a two-pronged argument. First, following Taylor (2008) and Seaman (2018, 2020) I suggest that family caregiving for residents of longterm care homes helps to sustain residents’ personhood: the recognition of their identity as an ongoing participant in their social universe. The second part of my argument is that caregiving is a multifaceted and paradoxical endeavour. While caregiving can be a transformative and reciprocal practice of selfactualization (cf. Kleinman 2012; Kleinman and van der Geest 2009), at times it can also be troubled, ambivalent, and stressful (Cook and Trumble 2020). At its best, caregiving is a two-way street, enabling the maintenance of personhood for the care recipient, and validating the caregiver’s sense of ‘moral agency,’ or what medical anthropologist Neely Myers (2015, 13) defines as the capacity to be recognized in one’s local sphere as a good person who can make intimate connections to others. When caregiving goes awry, however, it leads to frustration, despair, and a sense of moral failure for the caregiver. For the care recipient, non-recognition and the loss of personhood can lead to social death and may also hasten physical decline. I conclude that for both professional and family caregivers of long-term care residents, systemic improvement of social and material support is needed to mitigate the challenges inherent in the recognition of personhood in caregiving relationships [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper fills a gap in the literature concerning the importance of the categories of potentiality and actuality in the philosophies of Charles Sanders Peirce and John Dewey. Peirce and Dewey derived their positions by revising Aristotle. Their revisions are surprisingly similar in many aspects and different in at least one significant feature -- haecceity. Peirce and Dewey's pragmatic reconstruction of actuality and potentiality is perhaps the most important advance since the Scholastics. Authenticity is a guiding concept in existentialism, as it provides the basis of a proper understanding of peculiar existentialist themes and notions such as anxiety, individuality, otherness, freedom, selfhood, self-consciousness or responsibility. Basically, authenticity regards our own innermost self, our sheer individuality. Authenticity gives us a sense of self. However, authenticity is not a natural given, but a challenge for the individual to embark on a journey towards becoming a true self. Starting from Søren Kierkegaard's fundamental distinction between the individual and the crowd, we will discuss the fate of the postmodern concept of authenticity that has been slowly stripped of its initial meanings in the philosophical discourse. On the surface, this authenticity still resembles its existentialist meanings, but at the core has become a customizable commodity, able to accommodate a more free-floating, versatile, opportunistic view of the person, one that means whatever the speaker wants it to signify, and promises to be radically liberating. This "new kind" of authenticity implies, among other meanings, the requisite of reaching a different, superior version of the self, following the assumption that people are born and grow into a sort of imperfect, flawed, inferior, rigid state, that they need to transcend. The pressure to restore or discover an ideal of authenticity that is just a placeholder can be easily transformed into a powerful ideological device, a political instrument. In this respect, we draw on a few views that treat authenticity as central to understanding various populist movements of our times. We believe that what might operate as an antidote to the empty contemporary popular understanding of authenticity is to link it to the ideal of a good life, one that comes with the idea of responsibilization and continuous questioning of one's current commitments, including values such as authenticity itself. The presented research is aimed at revealing the theoretical and philosophical methodological basis of the art of performance interpretation from the perspective of the procedural triad composer-performer-listener. In the process of interpretation, the performer acts as an active carrier of internal needs and motivations, which have a physiological, psychological, moral, and aesthetic as well as volitional nature. This division is quite conditional as these processes occur simultaneously and interact with each other. Each person is more or less inclined to a certain meaningful aspect, which forms an individual approach to the interpretation of the work. Thus, the needs of the performer (during the conscious search for the sound embodiment of the interpretation at the stage of practical implementation) resolve the most important issue: the ratio of the author's and performer's concepts.

Social media serves as a powerful force in shaping societal norms and values, often presenting idealized and unrealistic images of womanhood. This study explores how social media influences women's gender roles and identities, particularly its impact on their aspirations and self-esteem, while also providing opportunities for self-expression and empowerment. Using a phenomenological approach, the research involved focus group discussions with young women aged 18–25 living in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao, Philippines. The findings reveal that women respond differently to social media content based on their values, beliefs, and backgrounds. The results highlight social media's dual impact: it can both reinforce traditional gender norms and serve as a tool for self-empowerment. This complexity demonstrates the need to recognize individual differences in social media engagement and their effects on shaping gender identities. By exploring these diverse interactions, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the multifaceted relationship between social media and gender role formation.

Nietzsche’s criticism of the masses could have looked hackneyed at the end of the XIXth century, had it not the originality of moving onto psychological and biological levels what others previously elaborated only at a social scale: a "herd instinct" explaining both the lack of social cohesion and the loss of possible individual affirmation in democratic and egalitarian ages. As he sees the utilitarian promotion of happiness and empathy as part of the problem, he fiercely condemns John Stewart Mill’s philosophy – as he understands it. Our point is to throw into relief that Mill’s theory of individuality is but closer to Nietzsche’s views for regenerating life against the spreading of democratic "nihilism". Our cross-reading of Mill and Nietzsche therefore aims at offering a reassessment of their antagonism and at highlighting ways of overcoming "nihilism" via culture and cultivation of the "character" and the individual surpassing of oneself.

Why do people shift their strategies for solving problems? Past work has focused on the roles of contextual and individual factors in explaining whether people adopt new strategies when they are exposed to them. In this study, we examined a factor not considered in prior work: people's evaluations of the strategies themselves. We presented undergraduate participants from a moderately selective university (N = 252; 64.8% women, 65.6% White, 67.6% who had taken calculus) with two strategies for solving algebraic word problems and asked them to rate these strategies and their own strategy on a variety of dimensions. Participants' ratings loaded onto two factors, which we label quality and difficulty. Participants' initial evaluations of the quality of the strategies were associated with whether they used the strategies at posttest, and this effect held even when controlling for individual and contextual factors. However, people's evaluations of the difficulty of the strategies were not consistently associated with their later adoption of those strategies. We also examined individual and contextual predictors of strategy ratings and strategy adoption. Participants' need for cognition and their spatial visualization ability were associated with their strategy evaluations, and the framing of the story problems was associated with their strategy adoption. The findings highlight that strategy adoption depends on multiple interacting factors, and that to understand strategy change, it is critical to examine how people evaluate strategies.

Mapping the eco-evolutionary factors shaping the development of animals' behavioural phenotypes remains a great challenge. Recent advances in 'big behavioural data' research-the high-resolution tracking of individuals and the harnessing of that data with powerful analytical tools-have vastly improved our ability to measure and model developing behavioural phenotypes. Applied to the study of behavioural ontogeny, the unfolding of whole behavioural repertoires can be mapped in unprecedented detail with relative ease. This overcomes long-standing experimental bottlenecks and heralds a surge of studies that more finely define and explore behavioural-experiential trajectories across development. In this review, we first provide a brief guide to state-of-the-art approaches that allow the collection and analysis of high-resolution behavioural data across development. We then outline how such approaches can be used to address key issues regarding the ecological and evolutionary factors shaping behavioural development: developmental feedbacks between behaviour and underlying states, early life effects and behavioural transitions, and information integration across development.

Accurately measuring resilience to preclinical Alzheimers disease (AD) pathology is essential to understanding an important source of variability in cognitive aging. In a cohort of cognitively normal older adults (n = 123, age 76.75 ± 6.15 yr), we built a multifactorial measure of resilience which moderated the effect of AD pathology on longitudinal cognitive change. Linear residuals-based measures of resilience, along with other proxy measures (education and vocabulary), were entered into a hierarchical partial least-squares path model defining a putative consolidated resilience latent factor (model goodness of fit = 0.77). In a set of validation analyses using linear mixed models predicting longitudinal cognitive change, there was a significant three-way interaction among consolidated resilience, tau and time on episodic memory change (P = 0.001) such that higher resilience blunted the effect of tau pathology on episodic memory decline. Interactions between consolidated resilience and amyloid pathology on non-memory cognition decline suggested that resilience moderates pathology-specific effects on different cognitive domains.

In this review, we synthesize evidence to highlight cognitive appraisal as an important developmental antecedent of individual differences in emotion differentiation and adept emotion regulation. Emotion differentiation is the degree to which emotions are experienced in a nuanced or "granular" way-as specific and separable phenomena. More extensive differentiation is related to positive wellbeing and has emerged as a correlate of emotion regulation skill among adults. We argue that the cognitive appraisal processes that underlie these facets of emotional development are instantiated early in the first year of life and tuned by environmental input and experience. Powerful socializing input in the form of caregivers' contingent and selective responding to infants' emotional signals carves and calibrates the infant's appraisal thresholds for what in their world ought to be noticed, deemed as important or personally meaningful, and responded to (whether and how). These appraisal thresholds are thus unique to the individual child despite the ubiquity of the appraisal process in emotional responding. This appraisal infrastructure, while plastic and continually informed by experience across the lifespan, likely tunes subsequent emotion differentiation, with implications for children's emotion regulatory choices and skills. We end with recommendations for future research in this area, including the urgent need for developmental emotion science to investigate the diverse sociocultural contexts in which children's cognitive appraisals, differentiation of emotions, and regulatory responses are being built across childhood.

Cognitive control refers to the ability to maintain goal-relevant information in the face of distraction, making it a core construct for understanding human thought and behavior. There is great theoretical and practical value in building theories that can be used to explain or to predict variations in cognitive control as a function of experimental manipulations or individual differences. A critical step toward building such theories is determining which latent constructs are shared between laboratory tasks that are designed to measure cognitive control. In the current work, we examine this question in a novel way by formally linking computational models of two canonical cognitive control tasks, the Eriksen flanker and task-switching task. Specifically, we examine whether model parameters that capture cognitive control processes in one task can be swapped across models to make predictions about individual differences in performance on another task. We apply our modeling and analysis to a large scale data set from an online cognitive training platform, which optimizes our ability to detect individual differences in the data. Our results suggest that the flanker and task-switching tasks probe common control processes. This finding supports the view that higher level cognitive control processes as opposed to solely strategies in speed and accuracy tradeoffs, or perceptual processing and motor response speed are shared across the two tasks. We discuss how our computational modeling substitution approach addresses limitations of prior efforts to relate performance across different cognitive control tasks, and how our findings inform current theories of cognitive control. The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the basic concepts and terms used in the field of psychological diagnostics. The scientific approaches to the formation of terms and conceptual apparatus by which this branch of psychological science describes its subject of study are considered. It is emphasised that the development of science is determined primarily by the formation of terminology, that is, its language as a system of general and specific concepts that are reflected in certain terms and signs. It is stated that the language of psychodiagnostics is a complex, multilevel, integral system, the elements of which are categories, concepts, terms, symbols. It is shown that in the course of the development of psychology, the conceptual apparatus is continuously being improved, definitions are being clarified, and the terminological vocabulary is being enriched. The current state of development of psychodiagnostics, the formation of promising theories of assessment and measurement of individual characteristics have necessitated the clarification of its terminological apparatus, a significant number of concepts, definitions, which are often contradictory, through the use of various approaches and terminological elements. It is emphasised that the conceptual and terminological apparatus of psychodiagnostics should be developed on the basis of modern realities, abandoning outdated approaches to the definition of certain concepts, and that work towards clarifying and unifying terms requires special care and validity. With a view to improving the terminology, the author provides clarifications of some common definitions. Thus, it is proposed to distinguish between the concepts of “qualities” and “traits”, since “quality” corresponds to the Kettellian term “superficial” or “primary” trait and the Allportian term “secondary” or “secondary” disposition, and the concept of “trait” is more generalised, it summarises the existence of a significant number of qualities. It is proposed to understand individual (individual psychological) properties as generalised characteristics of temperament, character, abilities, orientation, i.e. stable mental phenomena which influence human activity, characterise a personality from the psychological and social aspects and are implemented in society. In addition, it is proposed to clearly distinguish between the concepts of “qualities”, “traits”, “features”, to introduce the terms “individual and personal properties and traits”, and to differentiate psychodiagnostic tools for the study of constitutional, individual and personal traits.

In pre-Song Chinese thought, the afterlife, or the subterranean realm was a sacred space distinctly separate from the world of the living, an extension of the political–religious–cultural order of the Chinese empire. Even after the introduction of Buddhism to China, although the Buddhist concept of hell applied karmic retribution to the present life in an attempt to provide ethical norms for real life, the sacredness of the afterlife remained intact. Song Dynasty Chinese thought underwent a profound “modernization” transformation. Su Shi, with the concept of qing 情 [disposition] at its core, disenchanted the sacred afterlife, shaping a new, self-conscious individuality in the interplay between the living and the dead, the finite and the infinite, the mortal and the immortal. This new individuality, with its spiritual spontaneity and freedom, integrated the afterlife with the present world, internalizing infinity and immortality into a utopian spiritual homeland. This free individuality, entirely different from Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism, marking a hidden potential in the development of Chinese intellectual history that has yet to be fully revealed.
