Corydalis impatiens (Pall.) Fisch. 1821. (Papaveraceae) is a Tibetan medical herb used to reduce pain, treat skin injuries, cure hepatitis, and benefit the circulatory system. In the current study, the chloroplast genome of C. impatiens was sequenced. This complete genome is a circular 197,317 bp sequence consisting of a small single-copy (SSC, 3105 bp) region, a large single-copy (LSC, 89,790 bp) region, and a pair of inverted repeats (IRs, 52,211 bp). This chloroplast genome encodes a total of 127 functional genes, including 81 protein-coding, 38 transfer RNA, and eight ribosomal RNA genes. Furthermore, this chloroplast genome contains six pseudogenes, including a pair of ndhB a pair of ndhD, one ndhC, and one ndhK. The phylogenetic relationship within the genus Corydalis was inferred with the maximum-likelihood method, and the result showed that C. impatiens was most closely related to C. conspersa. The fungus gnat Bradysia impatiens (Johannsen) is a worldwide pest inhabiting organic‐rich environments, including mushroom‐cultivation substrates, which leads to massive production losses of edible mushrooms. To promote a non‐insecticidal pest control strategy, we evaluated adult behavioural response towards two saprophytic fungal strains Aspergillus flavus Link and Mucor circinelloides Tiegh., isolated from B. impatiens‐inhabiting substrates and six edible mushrooms species. Our results indicated that (a) B. impatiens was most attracted to the oyster mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus among all six edible mushrooms; (b) males and females demonstrated a significant attraction for M. circinelloides over A. flavus and P. ostreatus; (c) adults demonstrated dynamic attraction tendencies that varied with the culture periods of A. flavus and M. circinelloides, wherein females represented most (mean = 78.6%) of the attracted individuals; and (d) larvae that fed on mycelial cultures of M. circinelloides could complete their entire life cycles, but larvae could not survive on a non‐fungal or A. flavus diet. In here, it has been presented a new first record of Impatiens balfourii Hook.f. (Balsaminaceae) in Turkey, which is the native range in the western Himalayan region. I. balfourii was detected in four different sites in the Düzce province of the Western Black Sea region of Turkey at the beginning of August 2020. It was deliberately introduced to the area where it was first detected (Beyköy) and used as a garden ornamental plant. Then, a survey was conducted to determine whether the related taxon was used in different gardens of Beyköy and the second site was determined. After these determinations, the place where the plant was brought to be used as an ornamental plant was questioned and it was determined that the seeds of the plant were collected from the forest edge habitat of a mountain village (Uğur village). Finally, it was detected by chance on the roadside (Konuralp), ca25 km from the first site. Based on these records, the habitats of I. balfourii are forest edge, stream edge and artificial habitats (roadsides, parks, gardens). This study also provides a botanical identification of I. balfourii. The future spread of this taxon in Düzce should be monitored, considering its high-level plant properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to establish baseline data concerning certain aspects of pollen biology of the invasive alien species Impatiens balfourii and I. glandulifera, and the native I. noli-tangere to the flora of Lozenska Mt. The aims of this study were: 1. To evaluate variation in pollen morphology, pollen production and fertility/sterility in the populations of I. glandulifera in order to obtain data for its invasive success and compare with the other two species; 2. To analyze differences in pollen biology in two flower color forms (pink and violet). The pollen morphology was investigated with light microscope and the pollen grains are 4(5)-zonocolpate oblate or peroblate in equatorial view, and rectangular-obtuse or suborbicular in most 4-zonocolpate grains in polar view, with a reticulate ornamentation. The mean pollen production per flower and stamen was very high in all three species comparable with anemophilous plants. The sterile pollen was between 8.9% and 17.54%. The variations in pollen biology can be related to different evolutionary adaptations of the flowers to be more attractive for pollinators and successful in reproduction and distribution. Impatiens rapiformis (Balsaminaceae), a new species from Malipo County, Yunnan, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is superficially similar to I. apalophylla, I. malipoensis and I. guizhouensis, but differs by having cylindric or subfusiform root tuber, elliptic or obovate‐oblong leaf blades and falcate outer lateral sepals. The characters of its seed micromorphology and pollen morphology under SEM are given. A preliminary molecular phylogenetic study suggests that I. rapiformis should be placed in I. subg. Clavicarpa. Herbaceous stock plant production and cutting harvest methods affect the performance of cuttings harvested from those stock plants. Specifically, the effect of daily light integral (DLI), ethephon spray applications, and the stock plant node position (NPSP) of hybrid impatiens (Impatiens hybrida) 'Compact Electric Orange' stock plants on the flowering of the harvested cuttings was examined. The DLI treatments were grouped in ranges of low (5.1-5.5 mol·m-2·d-1), medium (7.6-8.8 mol·m-2·d-1), and high (10.3-12.0 mol·m-2·d-1) levels. The stock plants were treated weekly with 0, 50, 100, 200, or 300 mg·L-1 ethephon. Cuttings were harvested from six NPSP, which refers to the location on the stock plants from which the cuttings were harvested. Time to flower of the harvested cuttings decreased as DLI increased from 5.1 to 12.0 mol·m-2·d-1, as ethephon concentrations decreased from 300 to 0 mg·L-1, and as NPSP moved from lower to upper positions within the stock plant canopy. Time to flower was highly correlated with the node position on the cutting (NPC) where the first flower appeared. For example, when flowers appeared in the lowest NPC on the shoot (NPC 1), the first flower opened 2.5 weeks after sticking the unrooted cuttings in propagation, while flowers that appeared in NPC 7, the seventh-oldest node from the base of the cutting, opened at 9.0 weeks. The results demonstrate how stock plant management practices can be manipulated to produce cuttings that allow growers to produce flowering plants on different schedules, i.e., production time can be shortened from conventional production schedules, which may allow hybrid impatiens to be marketed like bedding plant species such as impatiens (Impatiens walleriana). Impatiens wutaishanensis R.L. Liao & Lei Cai, a new species from Southeast Yunnan, China, is here described and illustrated. This new species is most similar to Impatiens parvisepala S.X. Yu & Y.T. Hou in its racemose inflorescences, its four lateral sepals, the leaf arrangement, and in having yellow flowers. However, it differs in the height of the plants, the length of the petiole, the size and shape of the leaf blade, the shape of the spur, and the number of flowers in each inflorescence. A detailed description, color photographs, and a provisional IUCN red list assessment are provided, and its geographical distribution, ecology, and morphological relationship with relevant similar species are discussed. Insect pollinators readily learn olfactory cues, and this is expected to select for 'honest signals' that provide reliable information about floral rewards. However, plants might alternatively produce signals that exploit pollinators' sensory biases, thereby relaxing selection for signal honesty. We examined the innate and learned preferences of Bombus impatiens for Mimulus guttatus floral scent phenotypes corresponding to different levels of pollen rewards in the presence and absence of the innately attractive floral volatile compound β-trans-bergamotene. Bees learned to prefer honest signals after foraging on live M. guttatus flowers, but only exhibited this preference when presented floral scent phenotypes that did not include β-trans-bergamotene. Our results suggest that a sensory bias for β-trans-bergamotene overrides the ability of B. impatiens to use honest signals when foraging on M. guttatus. This may represent a deceptive pollination strategy that allows plants to minimize investment in costly rewards without incurring reduced rates of pollinator visitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Impatiens L., the largest genus in the family Balsaminaceae with approximately 1000 species, is a controversial and complex genus that includes many economically important species well known for medicinal and ornamental values. However, there is limited knowledge of molecular phylogeny and chloroplast genomics, and uncertainties still exist at a taxonomic level. In this study, we have assembled four chloroplast genomics specimens of Impatiens cyanantha and Impatiens monticola, which are found at the different altitudes of Guizhou and Yunnan in China, and compared them with previously published three wild Balsaminaceae species (Impatiens piufanensis, Impatiens glandlifera, and Hydrocera triflora). The complete chloroplast genome sequences ranged from 152,236 bp (I. piufanensis) to 154,189 bp (H. triflora) and encoded 115 total distinct genes, of which 81 were protein-coding, 30 were distinct transfer RNA genes(tRNA), and 4 were ribosomal RNA genes (rRNA). A comparative analysis of I. cyanantha (Guizhou) vs. I. cyanantha (Yunnan) and I. monticola (Guizhou) vs. I. monticola (Yunnan) revealed minor changes in lengths; however, similar gene contents, gene orders, and GC contents existed among them. Interestingly, highly coding and non-coding genes, and regions matK, psbK, atpH-atpI, trnC-trnT, petN, psbM, atpE, rbcL, accD, psaL, rps3-rps19, ndhG-ndhA,rpl16, rpoB, ndhB, ndhF, ycf1, and ndhH were found, which could be suitable for identification of species and phylogenetic studies. During the comparison between I. cyanantha (Guizhou) and I. cyanantha (Yunnan), we observed that the rps4, ycf2, ndhF, ycf1, and rpoC2 genes underwent positive selection. Meanwhile, in the comparative study of I. monticola (Guizhou) vs. I. monticola (Yunnan), The accD and ycf1 genes were positively selected. Additionally, phylogenetic relationships based on maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) among whole chloroplast genomes showed that a sister relationship with I. monticola (Guizhou) and I. monticola (Yunnan) formed a clade with I.piufanensis proving their close connection. Besides, I.cyanantha (Guizhou) and I. cyanantha (Yunnan) formed a clade with I. glandlifera. Along with the findings and the results, the current study might provide valuable significant genomic resources for systematics and evolution of the genus impatiens in different altitudes of regions. Trait matching—a correlation between the morphology of plants and their pollinators—has been frequently observed in pollination interactions. Different intensities of natural selection in individual regions should cause such correlations to be observable across different local assemblages. In this study, we focused on matching between spur lengths of the genus Impatiens and bill lengths of sunbirds in tropical Africa. For 25 mountain and island locations, we compiled information about the composition and traits of local Impatiens and sunbird assemblages. We found that assemblage mean and maximum values of bill lengths were positively correlated with mean and maximum spur lengths across locations. Moreover, our results suggest that the positive correlations hold only for forest sunbird assemblages sharing the same habitat with Impatiens species. We further show that long‐billed sunbirds seem to locally match the morphology of multiple Impatiens plant species, not vice versa. Our observation implies that trait matching significantly contributes to structuring of Impatiens–sunbird pollination systems. Bradysia impatiens (Johannsen, 1912) is an important pest of various mushrooms and plant seedlings, while it also damages plants as vectors transmitting pathogens. The complete B. impatiens mitogenome is 16,479 bp in length, with an A + T content of 80.6%. The mitogenome had three overlapped regions; the longest overlap is 7 bp. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that B. impatiens is closely related to Bradysia amoena. The study provided a basis for future studies of species divergence in Bradysia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One neotype, three second-step lectotypes and fourty lectotypes are designated for fourty four names in Indian Impatiens to fix the identity and to avoid the misapplication of names. Thirty nine names are synonymized, after a detailed ecological study of live plants in the field and examination of herbarium specimens including types. Rose balsam (Impatiens balsamina) is an important ornamental species grown worldwide for its attractive flowers and also having medicinal properties. Flat stem, little leaf, and phyllody symptoms were observed in I. balsamina nurseries in Uttar Pradesh and Tripura states of India during surveys from 2018 to 2020, with an incidence from 6 to 27%. Amplicons of ~ 1.2 kb were amplified in all the tested symptomatic samples of I. balsamina using universal phytoplasma primer pairs from different surveyed locations, but not from the asymptomatic plants. Pairwise sequence comparison, phylogeny, and virtual RFLP analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences identified the phytoplasmas as 16SrI-B subgroup strain from Tripura (Lembucherra) and 16SrII-D subgroup strain from Uttar Pradesh (Gorakhpur and Faizabad). Phytoplasma presence and identity was further confirmed by amplifying secA, rp, secY, and tuf genes. Background and Aims Floral diversity as a result of plant–pollinator interactions can evolve by two distinct processes: shifts between pollination systems or divergent use of the same pollinator. Although both are pollinator driven, the mode, relative importance and interdependence of these different processes are rarely studied simultaneously. Here we apply a phylogenetic approach using the Balsaminaceae (including the species-rich genus Impatiens) to simultaneously quantify shifts in pollination syndromes (as inferred from the shape and colour of the perianth), as well as divergent use of the same pollinator (inferred from corolla symmetry). Methods For 282 species we coded pollination syndromes based on associations between floral traits and known pollination systems, and assessed corolla symmetry. The evolution of these traits was reconstructed using parsimony- and model-based approaches, using phylogenetic trees derived from phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ribosomal and plastid DNA sequence data. Key Results A total of 71 % of studied species have a bee pollination syndrome, 22 % a bimodal syndrome (Lepidoptera and bees), 3 % a bird pollination syndrome and 5 % a syndrome of autogamy, while 19 % of species have an asymmetrical corolla. Although floral symmetry and pollination syndromes are both evolutionarily labile, the latter shifts more frequently. Shifts in floral symmetry occurred mainly in the direction towards asymmetry, but there was considerable uncertainty in the pattern of shift direction for pollination syndrome. Shifts towards asymmetrical flowers were associated with a bee pollination syndrome. Conclusion Floral evolution in Impatiens has occurred through both pollination syndrome shifts and divergent use of the same pollinator. Although the former appears more frequent, the latter is likely to be underestimated. Shifts in floral symmetry and pollination syndromes depend on each other but also partly on the region in which these shifts take place, suggesting that the occurrence of pollinator-driven evolution may be determined by the availability of pollinator species at large geographical scales. Bumble bees (Bombus sp.) are important pollinators for agricultural systems and natural landscapes and have faced population declines globally in recent decades. Neonicotinoid pesticides have been implicated as one of the reasons for the population reductions in bumble bees and other pollinators due to their widespread use, specificity to the invertebrate nervous system, and toxicity to bees. Adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) are used to describe the mechanism of action of a toxicant through sequential levels of biological organization to understand the key events that occur for a given adverse outcome. We used the AOP framework to organize and present the current literature available on the impacts of neonicotinoids on bumble bees. The present review focuses on Bombus terrestris and B. impatiens, the 2 most commonly studied bumble bees due to their commercial availability. Our review does not seek to describe an AOP for the molecular initiating event shared by neonicotinoids, but rather aims to summarize the current literature and determine data gaps for the Bombus research community to address. Overall, we highlight a great need for additional studies, especially those examining cellular and organ responses in bumble bees exposed to neonicotinoids. The annual plant Impatiens glandulifera (Himalayan balsam) is the most widespread invasive non‐native weed in the British Isles. Manual control is widely used, but is costly and laborious. Recently, biological control using the rust fungus Puccinia komarovii var. glanduliferae has been trialled. We designed an experiment to assess the impact of these control methods on invertebrate communities in relation to unmanaged and uninvaded habitats, and to determine whether mycorrhizal inoculation aided post‐control recovery of these communities. Sixty invaded and twenty uninvaded field soil blocks were transplanted to the experiment site, where a mycorrhizal inoculum was added to half of all blocks. Biological and mechanical control treatments were applied to twenty invaded blocks independently; the twenty remaining invaded blocks were left intact. Above‐ and belowground invertebrate samples were collected from the blocks at the end of the growing season. Overall, aboveground invertebrate abundance increased with the removal of I. glandulifera, and several groups showed signs of recovery within one growing season. The effect of mechanical control was more variable in belowground invertebrates. Biological control did not affect aboveground invertebrate abundance but resulted in large increases in populations of belowground Collembola. Our experiment demonstrates that mechanical removal of I. glandulifera can cause rapid increases in invertebrate abundance and that its biological control with P. komarovii var. glanduliferae also has the potential to benefit native invertebrate communities. Biological invasions are one of the major threats to biodiversity worldwide and contribute to changing community patterns and ecosystem processes. However, it is often not obvious whether an invader is the "driver" causing ecosystem changes or a "passenger" which is facilitated by previous ecosystem changes. Causality of the impact can be demonstrated by experimental removal of the invader or introduction into a native community. Using such an experimental approach, we tested whether the impact of the invasive plant Impatiens glandulifera on native vegetation is causal, and whether the impact is habitat‐dependent. We conducted a field study comparing invaded and uninvaded plots with plots from which I. glandulifera was removed and plots where I. glandulifera was planted within two riparian habitats, alder forests and meadows. A negative impact of planting I. glandulifera and a concurrent positive effect of removal on the native vegetation indicated a causal effect of I. glandulifera on total native biomass and growth of Urtica dioica. Species α‐diversity and composition were not affected by I. glandulifera manipulations. Thus, I. glandulifera had a causal but low effect on the native vegetation. The impact depended slightly on habitat as only the effect of I. glandulifera planting on total biomass was slightly stronger in alder forests than meadows. We suggest that I. glandulifera is a "back‐seat driver" of changes, which is facilitated by previous ecosystem changes but is also a driver of further changes. Small restrictions of growth of the planted I. glandulifera and general association of I. glandulifera with disturbances indicate characteristics of a back‐seat driver. Plant growth regulators and synthetic surfactants are choices for enhancing the efficiency of PAH phytoremediation. In this study, the use of salicylic acid alone, surfactant alone (Triton X-100 or Tween 80), or salicylic acid together with Triton X-100 or Tween 80 on anthracene and fluoranthene removal by Impatiens balsamina were investigated. On days 15 and 30 of the experiment, the spraying of salicylic acid as 0.01 mM and watering of 1X CMC of Triton X-100 or Tween 80 were performed. Then, the plant growth parameters and anthracene or fluoranthene remaining in the soil were analyzed on day 45 of the experiment. The results revealed that I. balsamina did not enhance anthracene (77.4 % remained) and fluoranthene (74.6 % remained) removal when compared with unplanted soil (63.8 % of anthracene and 70.0 % of fluoranthene remained). Salicylic acid spraying in combination with watering of Triton X-100 (47.1 % anthracene remained) or Tween 80 (59.7 % anthracene remained) enhanced anthracene removal in unplanted soil; however, enhanced fluoranthene removal was not observed. In planted soil, salicylic acid spraying alone, Tween 80 watering alone or salicylic acid spraying in combination with synthetic surfactant (Triton X-100 or Tween 80) watering slightly enhanced anthracene removal (54.9-58.0 % of anthracene remained) but not fluoranthene (67.9 - 81.9 % of fluoranthene remained). The results revealed that planting contaminated soil with I. balsamina was not suitable to stimulate anthracene and fluoranthene degradation in this study. Biostimulation of unplanted soil with synthetic surfactant and salicylic acid was suitable to stimulate the removal of anthracene from the soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Impatiens is an ornamental member of family Balsaminaceae. This plant mostly propagated by vegetative technique, which generally time wasting process. It is often multiplicities via seed but is barricaded by F1 seed sterility. In vitro culture of Impatiens walleriana has much significant function in fast proliferation with useful features and elicitation of healthful and disease-free plants. This experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of medium and different hormones on in vitro propagation of Impatiens walleriana by using a completely randomized design. MS medium was prepared along with various concentrations of BAP, TDZ and ZEA. Callus was induced and grew well in media supplemented with 0.5 mg/l NAA + 1 mg/l BAP. In order to indirect propagation, explants were cultured in same media containing BAP, ZEA and TDZ in combination with NAA. These treatments have ability to organogenesis. The results revealed that the control treatment had the lowest effect on traits including shoot percentage, number of shoots, number of leaves, shoot length, fresh and dry weight, and it lead to maximum proliferations in medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/l NAA + 1 mg/l BAP. The highest root length and rooting percentage was observed in 0.5 mg/l IBA + 0.5 mg/l BAP. In addition, the effect of mutation agents was studied. Aseptic samples were treated with γ-irradiation, Ethyl Methane Sulfonate and colchicines at growth chamber. Treatments with 30 and 60 grey respectively had the lower survival rate, growth rate and polyploidy while colchicines with 0.1 and 0.2 had the highest rats. Regarding to these, the present technique illustrate an effective system for in vitro reproduction of Impatiens walleriana by hypocotyls cultures. Impatiens hawkeri is among the three important bedding plants in the world. There is no efficient protocol for fast micropropagation of Impatiens hawkeri cv. Sweeties Blue Star. Single nodes were germinated on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA; 0.00, 0.10 and 0.50 mg l-1), 6-benzyladenine (BA; 0.00, 0.10, 0.50 and 1.00 mg l-1) and kinetin (KIN; 0.00, 0.10, 0.50 and 1.00 mg l-1). The shoot length was highest in medium containing 0.10 mg l-1 NAA and control. The largest number of shoots (14.06 and 14.00 per explant) was produced in media supplemented with 1.00 mg l-1 BA, 0.50 mg l-1 NAA and 1.00 mg l-1 BA, 0.10 mg l-1 NAA, respectively. The 0.10 mg l-1 NAA along with 1.00 mg l-1 BA was found to be superior for production of leaf (57.13). Maximum root length (33.80 mm) and root number (29.13) were obtained on medium supplemented with 0.10 mg l-1 NAA without BA and KIN. Plantlets were transplanted to pots filled with perlite and peat moss (in ratio of 1:1) and transferred to the greenhouse for acclimatization. Impatiens sterilis (Balsaminaceae), discovered in Yunnan, China, is described and illustrated here. It belongs to I. section Racemosae and is related to I. scutisepala. I. sterilis differs from the latter species in the shape of the leaf blades and the lower sepal, the number of lateral sepals, and producing some reduced sterile inflorescences at the end of anthesis. Detailed notes on morphology, key diagnostic characters, distribution, pollen and seed morphology, conservation status and color photographs are provided for the identification of the new species. Impatiens hookeriana Arnott is a lesser known Indo‐Sri Lankan balsam belongs to the family Balsaminaceae. It is previously treated as a heterotypic synonym of Impatiens grandis in literature. However, critical studies of protologues, herbarium specimens and fresh collections of I. hookeriana and I. grandis, we conclude that the former species warrant acceptance as distinct species, hence it is reinstated here. Impatiens necrotic spot is a viral infection affecting plants, caused by “impatiens necrotic spot virus”. The bibliometric analysis had been conducted to understand the active authors, organizations, journals, and countries involved in the research domain of “Impatiens necrotic spot”. All published articles related to “Impatiens necrotic spot” from “Scopus”, were analyzed using the VOS viewer to develop analysis tables and visualization maps. This article had set the objective to consolidate the scientific literature regarding the “Impatiens necrotic spot” and also to find out the trends related to the same. Background: Southeast Asia, together with tropical Africa, Madagascar, South India and Sri Lanka, and the eastern Himalayas, are the five primary hotspots of species diversity of Impatiens (Balsaminaceae). China is also rich in Impatiens species, especially in the limestone karsts or 'Danxia' landforms. With zygomorphic flowers and diverse corolla morphology and color, the species in Impatiens are well-known for their ornamental use, but they are also notorious in taxonomy. During the preparation of revision of Impatiens in Zhejiang and adjacent regions, an unknown species was collected from Mt. Wuyi in Fujian Province, Southeast China. Results: Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ITS, chloroplast atpB-rbcL and trnL-F sequences, together with micromorphology of pollen grains and seed coats, strongly supported the close relationship of the new species with Impatiens platysepala Y.L.Chen and I. chloroxantha Y.L.Chen. In turn, both molecular data and morphological characters also were sufficient to distinguish the new species from the other two counterparts. Premise of research. Urbanization is associated with the fragmentation of natural habitats, a reduction in agricultural pesticides, and high numbers of introduced species. Urbanization has also been connected to declines in native biodiversity, including of important ecosystem service providers such as pollinators. We expected that reported patterns of lower pollinator diversity and abundance in highly built-up urban areas should translate into higher pollen limitation of plant reproduction. Methodology. We set up arrays of 20 pots containing the native plant Impatiens capensis in 15 community gardens around the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, that were selected to span a gradient of urbanization (defined as the percentage of surface area in a 100-m radius that was covered by pavement, buildings, or other impermeable surfaces). We collected data on the pollen limitation, lifetime fitness, and investment in selfed versus outcrossed reproduction over the course of each plant's life span. Pivotal results. The plants in our study were pollen limited on average, but there was no association between the extent of pollen limitation and site urbanization. This result was robust to the landscape scale at which urbanization was calculated. In fact, the pollen limitation of our plants was similar to what has been reported in studies of I. capensis in the wild. Plant investment in selfing was not associated with urbanization; however, hand-pollinated plants in our study tended to invest more in outcrossed reproduction than open-pollinated plants, highlighting the mating system plasticity of this species. Conclusions. Our findings indicate that, for a plant that is native to this area, pollen limitation was not consistently higher in heavily built-up urban areas. Impatiens capensis is an annual plant native to eastern North America that is currently spreading across Europe. In Poland, due to this plant's rapid spread in the secondary range and high competitiveness in relation to native species, it is considered a locally invasive species. The microstructure of seeds is an important tool for solving various taxonomic problems and also provides data useful for determining the impact of various environmental factors on the phenotypic variability of species. This issue is particularly important in regard to invasive species which occupy a wide range of habitats in the invaded range. There are few reports on seed size and thus far no descriptions of the seed ultrastructure of I. capensis in the analyzed literature. We present new data on the seed morphology of I. capensis growing in different habitats and conditions in the secondary range of the species. The studied populations differed significantly in each of the investigated traits (seed length, width, circumference, area, roundness, and mass). Our findings showed that anthropogenic disturbances in habitats and some soil parameters (presence of carbonates, potassium, loose sand, and moisture) were statistically significant with various seed sizes and morphology in the studied populations of I. capensis. Moreover, our studies showed maximum seed length (5.74 mm) and width (3.21 mm) exceeding those values given in the available literature. For the first time, we also provide a detailed SEM study of the ultrastructure of the seed coat of I. capensis. There are two types of epidermal cells on the seeds: (a) between the ribs (elongated with straight anticlinal walls, slightly concave outer periclinal walls, and micropapillate secondary sculpture on the edges with anticyclic walls), and (b) on the ribs (isodiametric cells with straight anticlinal walls and concave outer periclinal walls). Impatiens bakthangensis sp. nov. a new species of Impatiens is described from the Bakthang area of Gangtok, East district of Sikkim (northeast India). With its distinctly bucciniform lower sepals, the new species is similar to I. duclouxii and I. discolor with which it has previously been confused, but differs in several floral characters. Impatiens macrantha S. X. Yu&Ying Qin (Balsaminaceae), a new species from Guangxi, China, is described and illustrated. Phylogenetic analysis based on molecular data shows the new species to belong to I. subg. Clavicarpa and to be closely related to I. tubulosa with which it shares succulent stems and racemose inflorescences, but it can be easily distinguished by having a 4 – or 5 – ridged stem, obovate or elliptic leaf blade, and saccate lower sepal. Furthermore, I. macrantha is distinguishable from other Impatiens in China by its obviously larger leaves and flowers. Impatiens glandulifera, an annual species native to the Himalayas, is the tallest annual plant in Europe, where it has become invasive and destabilises riverbanks. This study explored between- and within-site trait variation in the invasive range of I. glandulifera to identify trait relationships that underlie the large size and local invasion success of this species. Leaf chlorophyll content, vegetative growth traits (plant height, leaf length, leaf width, number of side branches, leaves and nodes), the number of reproductive units (sum of flower buds, flowers and seed pods) and seed pod length were determined for five I. glandulifera stands in the south-west of Ireland. Plant vegetative growth traits and the number of reproductive units were positively correlated, with the highest trait values observed at a shaded site with high disturbance. Chlorophyll content in the upper leaves declined with an increasing number of reproductive units at sites with low soil nitrogen, suggesting that nutrient allocation to the reproductive sinks is prioritised over photosynthetic capacity of the upper leaves. Impatiens shenglanii Q.L. Gan & X.W. Li sp. nova (Balsaminaceae) is described and illustrated. It is the tallest among Chinese Impatiens, and somewhat resembles I. compta in having leaves with coarsely crenate margins, inequilateral ovate-orbicular lateral sepals, and a dorsal petal which is mucronulate at apex. However, I. shenglanii has a longer crista above the dorsal petal, lower sepal with an oblique mouth (vs. vertical in I. compta) and non-curved setose lateral united petals (vs. curved setose in I. compta). The montane terrain of northern Laos is covered by species-rich subtropical evergreen oak forests, home to endemic tree genera such as Mytilaria (Hamamelidaceae), and characterised by the coexistence of several honeybee and bumblebee species. We explored community-level plant–pollinator interactions of this unique little-known ecosystem. Extensive direct observations on flowering phenology and flower-visitor assemblages of 288 plant species of 82 families were conducted in a montane forest ecosystem in Houaphanh and Xiangkhouang Provinces, Laos, from 2005 until 2016. Based mainly on the extensive flower-visit data, we assessed the pollination system of each plant species. Five sympatric honeybee species (Apis dorsata, A. laboriosa, A. cerana, A. florea and A. andreniformis) were common on various types of flowers, and floral preferences differed among species. Long-tongued bees belonging to Bombini and Anthophorini (Apidae) were species-rich and frequent visitors on various deep flowers, especially Acanthaceae, Balsaminaceae, Lamiaceae, Rubiaceae and Zingiberaceae. Character displacement by tongue length was observed among the bee species, and many relaxed species-specific and species-semispecific interactions were observed between the bees and the deep-flowers. Four plant species, in the genera Mytilaria, Chloranthus, Dioscorea and Cryptocarya, were visited exclusively by thrips. Two plant species, in the genera Lysimachia and Thladiantha, had oil-secreting flowers, which were specifically visited by the oil-collecting bees Macropis and Ctenoplectra, respectively. The dominant pollination system assessed was general insect pollination (31%), followed by long-tongued bee, small bee, honeybee, dipteran, lepidopteran, beetle, wasp, carpenter bee, thrips (e.g. the endemic genus Mytilaria), bird and hemipteran pollination. Our results suggest that the plant–pollinator interactions in the Palaeotropic montane ecosystem are characterised by significant contribution of the five honeybee species and species-rich, morphologically diverse long-tongued bees, both of which have contributed to shaping the remarkable diversity of angiosperms with deep flowers. Two alien species in Europe, Impatiens glandulifera and I. balfourii, are closely related, have similar growth rates and reproductive capacities, and are very attractive to pollinators. Nevertheless, only I. glandulifera is a highly invasive alien species in Europe, while I. balfourii is non-invasive. We assumed that the varying levels of invasiveness are driven by differences in the floating ability of their seeds, which may determine the invasion success of riparian alien plants, such as the Impatiens species. By mimicking two types of aquatic conditions, we determined seed floating ability for each species from younger and older populations. We also analyzed four seed traits: seed viability, surface, shape and coat structure. Seeds of the non-invasive I. balfourii float less well than seeds of the invasive I. glandulifera. We also found that the seeds of I. balfourii from the younger population have a higher floating ability in comparison with that of the seeds from the older population. The results for I. glandulifera were the opposite, with decreased floating ability in the younger population. These differences were associated with seed surface, shape and coat structure. These results indicate that the floating ability of I. balfourii seeds may increase over time following its introduction into a given area, while in the case of I. glandulifera, this ability may gradually decrease. Therefore, the former species, currently regarded as a poor disperser, has the potential to become invasive in the future, whereas the latter does not seem to benefit from further investments in the floating ability of its seeds. This study aimed to analyze the seed coat structure of nine species from the genus Impatiens from Northeast India. A review of the available literature showed a scarcity of data on seed sizes and shapes, as well as a complete lack of information on the ultrastructure of seeds from five taxa of Impatiens determined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Photographs of the surface structure of seeds from the analyzed species were taken using an SEM and, from these, we measured the length and width of the seeds. The results showed differences in the seed ultrastructure and metric traits within the studied taxa. Based on the ornamentation of the epidermal cells, we distinguished three morphological types: protrusive, granulate, and reticulate. The seeds of the investigated species had ellipsoid, subellipsoid, or subspheroid shapes. Their lengths and widths ranged from 1.2 to 3.6 mm and 0.7 to 2.1 mm, respectively. The results of the study showed that the ultrastructures of Impatiens seeds are different among taxa and for some species can be used as a diagnostic character for their identification. Over the past 15 years, downy mildew became the most destructive foliar disease in cultivated Impatiens species (Balsaminaceae) worldwide. A previous study had revealed that the causal agent was not Plasmopara obducens (Oomycota, Peronosporales) but Plasmopara destructor on Impatiens walleriana, and Plasmopara velutina on Impatiens balsamina. This hints to a relatively high degree of specialization of Plasmopara on Balsaminaceae. Therefore, it was the aim of the present study to perform multigene phylogenetic analysis and detailed morphological investigation for several Korean downy mildew samples parasitic to cultivated I. walleriana, and I. balsamina, but also to a northeast Asian wild plant, Impatiens textori. A subset of ornamentals grown in Serbia were surveyed for the presence of impatiens necrotic spot tospovirus (INSV) from 2008 to 2018. Out of 1578 samples tested for the presence of the virus using double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA), INSV was detected in 26 Begonia sp. and four Tulipa sp. samples collected in 2008 and in 10 samples of each of Begonia sp., Impatiens walleriana and I. hawkeri 'SunPatiens' and 'New Guinea' collected in 2018. INSV was not detected in any samples collected during 2009–2017. For further confirmation, the nucleotide sequence of the INSV nucleocapsid (N) gene was obtained by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in two and four samples collected in 2008 and 2018, respectively. The success of mechanical transmission of INSV isolates from different hosts was variable depending on isolates. Serbian INSV isolates showed very low nucleotide diversity and they were closely related to the Chinese and Japanese isolates already reported in the literature, indicating that the Serbian isolates might be of Asian origin. Phylogenetic analysis and the median-joining haplotype network of the N gene sequences showed clustering of Serbian INSV isolates in the Asian clade into two different subclades with different recent common ancestors implying two independent introductions. The sporadic occurrence of INSV with high temporal distance is a likely consequence of virus spread through the international trade in ornamental planting material. Therefore, the establishment of the virus should be considered and prevented when introducing new plant material into the country. Impatiens capensis (Meerb.) (orange jewelweed) and Impatiens pallida (Nutt.) (yellow jewelweed) are annual species with similar phenotypes that grow in similar environments throughout the eastern United States. This makes them extremely difficult to distinguish when (chasmogamous) flowers are absent. We use morphometric analyses to identify leaf characters that distinguish these species. After collecting and scanning 342 leaves from plants of each species growing in co-occurring populations in Madison, Wisconson, USA, we quantified: leaf size, shape (using elliptical Fourier analysis), serratedness, and color. Using leaf size and shape traits, a linear discriminate analysis assigned up to 100% of leaves to the correct species. The uppermost fully expanded leaf yielded the most accurate species assignments based on size and shape traits. This leaf was, on average, smaller, less deeply serrated, with a more acute base, apex, and elliptical shape in I. capensis compared with I. pallida. Leaves of I. pallida had more color contrast (lighter veins and margins) than I. capensis, which were solid green throughout. Morphometric analysis is a promising technique to identify species-distinguishing characters in the absence of binary traits or molecular genetic analyses. Positively charged reversed‐phase liquid chromatography was employed for the efficient preparative separation of isoquinoline alkaloids from Corydalis impatiens. Ten commercially available columns were compared for isoquinoline alkaloids analysis. While tailing, overloading, lower resolution, and buffer salts limited the application in purification of isoquinoline compounds of many of these columns, one positively charged reversed‐phase C18 column (XCharge C18) overcame these drawbacks, allowing for favorable separation resolution, even when loading isoquinoline compounds on a larger, preparative scale. The general separation process is as follows. First, isoquinoline alkaloids are enriched with Corydalis impatiens extract via a middle chromatogram isolated gel column. After column selection, separation is performed on an XCharge C18 analytical column, from which two evident chromatographic peaks are readily obtained. Finally, two isoquinoline alkaloids (protopine and corydamine) are selectively purified on the XCharge C18 preparative column. These results demonstrate that a middle chromatogram isolated gel column coupled with positively charged reversed‐phase liquid chromatography is effective for the preparative separation of isoquinoline alkaloids from Corydalis impatiens. Pollen morphology of 18 species from the genus Impatiens collected from different localities in Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) during the period of February 2017 to November 2019. From the observation of pollen it was found to be structurally monad; prolate, sub-prolate and prolate-spheroidal in equatorial view; and circular, rectangular, triangular, quinquangular, elliptic and quadrangular in polar view. The apertures varied from dicolpate, tricolpate to tetracolpate. The main ornamentation type was reticulate in most of the species except Impatiens fruticosa which showed echinate ornamentation. The variations in pollen structure within the species were useful for the identification and classification of the genus Impatiens. Bradysia odoriphaga Yang and Zhang (Diptera: Sciaridae) was discovered in the Welsh onion fields of northern Saitama in 2014 and the carrot fields of northern Saitama in 2015, and later in Chinese chive fields in central Gunma Prefecture. Elucidation of the dispersal ability of B. odoriphaga is important for its control. We investigated the flight and walking activities of B. odoriphaga and B. impatiens (Johannsen). The flight and walking durations of adults at 16, 19, 24, and 30°C were investigated by video recording. The flight duration of B. odoriphaga was significantly shorter than that of B. impatiens. In females of B. odoriphaga, the longest continuous flight duration was 2.4 seconds. The walking durations of male B. odoriphaga adults and both sexes of B. impatiens adults were not affected by temperature. In females of B. odoriphaga, the walking durations at 19 and 16°C were significantly shorter than those at other temperatures. Our results suggest that the range of B. odoriphaga dispersal is narrow. The new species Impatiens serusiauxii is described from Marojejy National Park in NE Madagascar. Impatiens serusiauxii differs from the morphologically similar I. manaharensis in the distinctly coriaceous linear-lanceolate leaves, the larger white flowers with dark red and yellow spots, the shape of the dorsal petal and the lateral united petals, and the shape of the lateral sepals and the lower sepal with spur oriented upwards. Two triterpene saponins (IPS-1, IPS-2) for the first time were isolated from the roots of Impatiens parviflora DC. (Balsaminaceae). Their anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by means of two in vitro models: anti-hyaluronidase and anti-denaturation assays. Both saponins were shown to be potent hyaluronidase inhibitors that affect the enzyme in a dose-dependent manner. The anti-hyaluronidase effect of IPS-2 (IC50 = 286.7 µg/mL) was higher than that of the reference drug: escin (IC50 = 303.93 µg/mL). Both saponins protected bovine serum albumin from heat-induced denaturation in a dose-dependent manner. IPS-1 demonstrated higher anti-denaturation effect (IC50 = 86.7 µg/ml) than IPS-2 (IC50 = 109.76 µg/mL) or the standard drug: acetylsalicylic acid (IC50 = 262.22 µg/mL). In conclusion, potent activity of IPS-1, IPS-2 in both in vitro assays shows that saponins from I. parviflora have anti-inflammatory activity. The impact of invasive species is often difficult to assess due to species × ecosystem interactions. Impatiens glandulifera heavily invaded several habitat types in Central Europe but its impact on native plant communities is rated ambiguously. One reason could be that the impact differs between habitat types or even between environmentally heterogeneous patches (micro-habitats) within one habitat type. In the present study a vegetation survey was performed within heterogeneous riverside habitats in Germany investigating the impact of I. glandulifera on native vegetation in dependence of environmental conditions. The vegetation was recorded in summer and spring because of seasonal species turnover and thus potentially different impact of the invasive plant. We found that the cover of I. glandulifera depended on environmental conditions resulting in a patchy occurrence. I. glandulifera did not have any impact on plant alpha-diversity but reduced the cover of the native vegetation, especially of the dominant species. This effect depended on micro-habitat and season. The native vegetation was most affected in bright micro-habitats, especially those with a high soil moisture. Not distinguishing between micro-habitats, plant species composition was not affected in summer but in spring. However, environmental conditions had a higher impact on the native vegetation than I. glandulifera. We conclude that within riparian habitats the threat of I. glandulifera to the native vegetation can be rated low since native species were reduced in cover but not excluded from the communities. This might be due to patchy occurrence and year-to-year changes in cover of I. glandulifera. The context-dependency in terms of micro-habitat and season requires specific risk assessments which is also an opportunity for nature conservation to develop management plans specific to the different habitats. A new species of Impatiens L. from Hubei, China, Impatiens zhuxiensis Q.L. Gan & X.W. Li, is described and illustrated. Impatiens zhuxiensis resembles I. nasuta Hook. f. and I. compta Hook. f. and these are the only species in I. sect. Impatiens with a long abaxial rostrum on the midvein of the dorsal petal. However, the flowers of I. zhuxiensis are yellow while those of I. nasuta and I. compta are deep purple‐red and pale purple‐blue, respectively; I. zhuxiensis has the midvein of the dorsal petal abaxially elongated into a pointed rostrum near the apex, whilst the rostrum of I. nasuta is elephant‐trunk‐shaped near the middle, and that of I. compta is recurved near the apex. A molecular phylogenetic analysis of Impatiens based on ITS, atpB‐rbcL and trnL‐F supported these three species as closely allied and that they belong to I. sect. Impatiens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
