Uniform and fine in-situ short-fiber/particle hybrid reinforcements were obtained in a SiCf/SiC composite/Ni-based superalloy joint by using a novel AuCuTiB/Mo/AuCuTiB composite filler. The growth of in-situ phases showed a strong dependence on the numbers of nucleation sites and metal atoms on the ceramic side. Inadequate brazing conditions adversely affected the formation of indirect TiB whiskers, and excessive brazing conditions induced an accumulation of metal atoms. As a result, the in-situ phases switched from Ti5Si3 + TiC to Ti5Si3 + Ni + TiB + TiC, and to (Ni, Ti)-(Si, C) + TiB with increasing brazing conditions. The size, type, and composition of the in-situ phases were effectively controlled by adjusting the brazing conditions (B content, brazing temperature, and holding time). In light of this, the shear strength of the joint was optimized at 124.9 MPa. The excellent mechanical performance was ascribed to (i) a suitable interfacial layer and (ii) the effective stress relief of in-situ phases and ductile/rigid/ductile multiple layers. Moreover, the joint exhibited mechanical stability at 973 K because the in-situ phases can serve as a high-temperature resistant second structure.

Abstract Background Serum bilirubin and total bile acid (TBA) levels have been reported to be strongly associated with the risk and prognosis of certain cancers. Here, we aimed to investigate the effects of pretreatment levels of serum bilirubin and bile acids on the prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). Methods A retrospective cohort of 1474 patients with CRC who underwent surgical resection between January 2015 and December 2017 was included in the study. Survival analysis was used to evaluate the predictive value of pretreatment levels of bilirubin and bile acids. X-Tile software was used to identify optimal cut-off values for total bilirubin (TBIL), direct bilirubin (DBIL) and TBA in terms of overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Results DBIL, TBIL, and TBA were validated as significant prognostic factors by univariate Cox regression analysis for both 3-year OS and DFS. Multivariate Cox regression analyses confirmed that high DBIL, TBIL and TBA levels were independent prognostic factors for both OS (HR: 0.435, 95% CI: 0.299–0.637, P < 0.001; HR: 0.436, 95% CI: 0.329–0.578, P < 0.001; HR: 0.206, 95% CI: 0.124–0.341, P < 0.001, respectively) and DFS (HR: 0.583, 95% CI: 0.391–0.871, P = 0.008; HR:0.437,95% CI: 0.292–0.655, P

Abstract Light, one of the key environmental components for both life and work, played significant role in subjective feelings (e.g. affect and comfort), but the exact effects and mechanisms were still to be determined. The present study screened thirty healthy adults (13 females, 22.45 ± 3.26 years) and examined subjective affect and comfort under short-term white lights with different combination of correlated color temperature (CCT) and illuminance at different times of day (e.g. morning, afternoon, and evening). Our results showed a significant interaction between illuminance level and time-of-day on subjective comfort. Participants felt more comfortable under 50 lx and 100 lx instead of 500 lx in the evening, and more comfortable under 500 lx in the morning and afternoon. In addition, a positive correlation between illuminance and comfort in the morning and a negative correlation between them in the evening were found. No significant effect of CCT on any subjective feeling was revealed. Our results necessitate the consideration of time-of-day in understanding lighting effects and application of healthy lighting in daily life.

Yao Yao et al. perform transcriptome-wide association analysis through integration of gene expression data and results of a previously-published genome-wide association study for neutrophil count. They find 34 independent genomic regions associated with expression changes and show that knockout of one candidate gene, TAF9, in CD34+ progenitor cells increases neutrophil maturation in vitro.

This present work is the first investigation on the laser welding of the novel hot-stamped steel with 2000MPa (HSS2000). Softening was present in mixed-grain HAZ and tempered zone, due to martensite transformation, precipitated carbons and partial recovery of martensite lath. Tensile strength of welded joint was ∼1500 MPa, 80% of base metal, due to the presence of soften zone. However, the softening cannot be eliminated with decreasing laser heat input but it did not influence the tensile strength of welded joints. Thus, the laser welding of HSS2000 is acceptable in the heat input range of 67∼86 J/mm because the tensile strength can reach 1500 MPa, which is superior to other ultra-high strength steels at present. HSS2000 has a potential application in the automotive manufactures in the future.

A route is present for preparing porous titanium scaffolds with open and interconnected pore morphology through calcium thermal in-situ reduction of TiO precursor. Titanium and dioxide titanium powders, with ammonium carbonate as the space holder, were used to prepare porous precursor whose main phase is TiO by a sintering process. Then calcium vapor was conduced to reduce the precursor and CaO was removed by leaching to obtain porous titanium structures. The morphology, pore structure, phase analysis of porous titanium precursor and porous titanium scaffolds were investigated by means of XRD, SEM and EDS. The porosity was observed by Archimedes method. By this route, the porous titanium with multi-gradient pore sizes ranging from a few microns to several hundred microns was formed. The porous titanium is of multi-gradient pore size distribution of 100 μm bigger, 10 μm∼100 μm and 10 μm smaller. The micro-pores on the pore walls increases connectivity between the macro-pores throughout the porous titanium interior. The porous titanium obtained by this method has a porosity of 50–65% and a titanium content more than 99%.

To achieve efficient photocatalytic H2 generation from water using earth-abundant and cost-effective materials, a simple synthesis method for carbon-doped CdS particles wrapped with graphene (C-doped CdS@G) is reported. The doping effect and the application of graphene as co-catalyst for CdS is studied for photocatalytic H2 generation. The most active sample consists of CdS and graphene (CdS-0.15G) exhibits promising photocatalytic activity, producing 3.12 mmol g−1 h−1 of H2 under simulated solar light which is ~4.6 times superior than pure CdS nanoparticles giving an apparent quantum efficiency (AQY) of 11.7%. The enhanced photocatalytic activity for H2 generation is associated to the narrowing of the bandgap, enhanced light absorption, fast interfacial charge transfer, and higher carrier density (ND) in C-doped CdS@G samples. This is achieved by C doping in CdS nanoparticles and the formation of a graphene shell over the C-doped CdS nanoparticles. After stability test, the spent catalysts sample was also characterized to investigate the nanostructure.

Summary: Although several meta-analyses regarding robot-assisted proctectomy (RP) and laparoscopic proctectomy (LP) in patients with rectal cancer are constantly being published, meta-analyses considering randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are still rare. It is therefore necessary to conduct an appropriate meta-analysis to provide reliable evidence for clinical decision-making. Databases such as PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CCTR) and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) were used to collect RCTs assessing the effectiveness and safety of RP and LP. Article search was performed until August 2019. Data were extracted and the quality was evaluated by two reviewers independently, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Abstract Background Patients with 46, XY disorder of sex development (DSD) are predisposed to the development of gonadal tumors, particularly germ cell tumors and gonadoblastoma. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are no publications in the existing literature that refer to the coexistence of 46, XY DSD and serous tumors in the ovary. Case presentation Here, we report the case of a 23-year-old female (social gender) patient with 46, XY DSD presenting with primary amenorrhea. Imageology revealed a huge mass in the left adnexa. Subsequent pathological analysis revealed a serous borderline tumor of the ovary. Conclusion Gonadal tumors of patients with 46, XY DSD are not necessarily malignant tumors and can coexist with borderline tumors with primitive corded gonads. The coexistence of DSD and serous borderline tumors is rare. Clearly, an early and accurate diagnosis plays an important role in the treatment of these patients. Although there may not be a clear correlation between the two lesions, it is vital that we specifically analyze the mechanisms involved so that we can determine whether patients with DSD are associated with an increase of developing serous borderline tumors of the gonad.

Abstract Background Preoperative detection of lymph node (LN) metastasis is critical for planning treatments in colon cancer (CC). The clinical diagnostic criteria based on the size of the LNs are not sensitive to determine metastasis using CT images. In this retrospective study, we investigated the potential value of CT texture features to diagnose LN metastasis using preoperative CT data and patient characteristics by developing quantitative prediction models. Methods A total of 390 CC patients, undergone surgical resection, were enrolled in this monocentric study. 390 histologically validated LNs were collected from patients and randomly separated into training (312 patients, 155 metastatic and 157 normal LNs) and test cohorts (78 patients, 39 metastatic and 39 normal LNs). Six patient characteristics and 146 quantitative CT imaging features were analyzed and key variables were determined using either exhaustive search or least absolute shrinkage algorithm. Two kernel-based support vector machine classifiers (patient-characteristic model and radiomic-derived model), generated with 10-fold cross-validation, were compared with the clinical model that utilizes long-axis diameter for diagnosis of metastatic LN. The performance of the models was evaluated on the test cohort by computing accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating curve (AUC). Results The clinical model had an overall diagnostic accuracy of 64.87%; specifically, accuracy of 65.38% and 62.82%, sensitivity of 83.87% and 84.62%, and specificity of 47.13% and 41.03% for training and test cohorts, respectively. The patient-demographic model obtained accuracy of 67.31% and 73.08%, the sensitivity of 62.58% and 69.23%, and specificity of 71.97% and 76.23% for training and test cohorts, respectively. Besides, the radiomic-derived model resulted in an accuracy of 81.09% and 79.49%, sensitivity of 83.87% and 74.36%, and specificity of 78.34% and 84.62% for training and test cohorts, respectively. Abstract Background This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of cytokine-induced killer (CIK)/dendritic cell combined with CIK (DC–CIK) cell therapy in advanced gastrointestinal cancer (GIC). Methods The PubMed, Cochrane library, and Embase were searched to conduct a meta-analysis of clinical controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CIK/DC–CIK cell therapy in advanced GIC. The pooled risk ratios (RRs) or weighted mean difference (WMD) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated. Results A total of nine studies with 1113 patients were identified. ObjectivesRural areas in China are more vulnerable to COVID-19 pandemic than urban areas, due to their far fewer health care resources. Village doctors, as rural grassroots health workers in China, have been actively engaged in the pandemic prevention and control. This study aims to describe the roles of village doctors in rural China, and the challenges they have faced during the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic.SettingThis study was conducted in three towns in Huairou District, Beijing, China.DesignWe carried out semi-structured interviews with 75 key informants. All the interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. We employed thematic analysis to define themes and sub-themes from the qualitative data.ResultsWe reported four themes. First, the village doctor guided the village committee to carry out decontamination, monitored home-isolated residents, and disseminated knowledge on prevention of the COVID-19 pandemic during the rural pandemic prevention and control. Second, they took pandemic prevention measures in village clinics, distributed pandemic prevention materials, and undertook pre-screening triage. Third, village doctors provided basic medical care, including treatment of common diseases as well as the purchase and delivery of medicines to villagers. Fourth, village doctors faced difficulties and challenges, such as inadequate medical skills, aging staff structure, and lack of pandemic prevention materials.ConclusionsDespite many difficulties and challenges, village doctors have actively participated in rural pandemic prevention and control, and made outstanding contributions to curbing spread of COVID-19 pandemic in rural areas. Village doctors provide basic health care while participating in various non-medical tasks.

Aiming at the performance degradation of lithium-ion batteries due to shell corrosion, the doping of alloy elements Zn, Mg and Cu on Al (111) surface and the effect on oxidation reaction of Al (111) surface were studied by the first-principles calculation method. The results show that Zn, Mg and Cu atoms stably combine with Al atoms, and the surface smoothness is slightly different due to their different radii and electronegativity. The dissociative adsorption of O2 molecules is related to the surface doping atoms and O2 coverage, while the electron tunneling of underlying metal promotes O2 adsorption on the surface. As O2 coverage increases, the O atoms adsorbed on the hcp site gradually migrate to the subsurface layer. Zn, Mg, Cu and vacancy defect hinder the migration of the surrounding O atoms to subsurface layer, resulting in different structures and thicknesses of the oxide film near the doped atoms. At the same time, Zn, Mg, and Cu atoms differ in their ability to gain or lose electrons compared with Al atoms, resulting in their different positions on the surface. In addition, the surface work function rises with the increase of O2 coverage, and Zn and Cu atoms make the work function increase faster. Finally, according to the research results, it can be inferred that Zn and Mg are the unfavorable factors for the oxidation reaction of Al surface.

Osimertinib, a third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) first-line therapy, has shown good clinical outcomes in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but some serious adverse events such as cardiotoxicity have also been reported. Here, we present the first NSCLC case with osimertinib-induced cardiac failure. The case is successfully being treated by switching to another third-generation TKI, aumolertinib. A 62-year-old non-smoking woman was initially diagnosed with stage cT2aN2M1c IVB NSCLC with synchronous brain and bone metastasis in April 2020. Further genetic screening of the patient identified Leu858Arg (L858R) mutation in EGFR; thus, the patient was administered third-generation TKI osimertinib (80 mg/day) for 6 months. This treatment with osimertinib led to serious cardiac failure but no significant reduction in NSCLC tumor size. To cope with these conditions, another third-generation TKI, aumolertinib (110 mg/day), along with a supplement treatment plan was prescribed to the patient. Interestingly, this new treatment plan of aumolertinib significantly inhibited tumor growth in 8 months. Therefore, we conclude that the administration of second-line aumolertinib 110 mg/day has fewer adverse reactions and high efficacy against NSCLC as compared to osimertinib therapy.

Recently, a COVID-19 virus variant spread rapidly in Guangzhou, China, causing public panic. This study aimed to understand the psychological and sleep-related consequences of the secondary outbreak of the pandemic on medical students. In this cross-sectional survey-based study, participants anonymously completed structured questionnaires online from June 8–22, 2021. We collected participants' demographic and general information. Anxiety, depression, and sleep quality were measured using the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), respectively. Protective factors were assessed using the Coping Style Questionnaire (CSQ). Uni- and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed examining factors associated with mental health and sleep quality problems. During the second wave of the pandemic in local outbreak areas in Guangzhou, China, more than one-third of medical students' mental health and sleep quality were affected. The prevalence of anxiety, depression, and poor sleep quality were 27.54%, 27.58%, and 18.19%, respectively. Students belonging to the Class of 2019, aged over 29 years, those with siblings, and those whose hometowns were in other provinces were more prone to the three health problems. Factors associated with an increased risk of mental health problems were vaccination status (adjusted odds ratio 1.603–1.839) and diet status (adjusted odds ratio 1.62–1.929). Positive coping styles served as protective factors (p < 0.05). We discovered that completed vaccination status, good diet, and positive coping styles were related to good mental health and sleep quality.

BackgroundThe Chinese hierarchical treatment system expects patients to first visit primary medical institutions (PMIs), and patients' willingness determined their utilization of primary health care. The aim of this study was to explore the factors associated with patients' willingness to make their first visit to PMIs.MethodsWe employed multistage stratified sampling and convenience sampling to administer questionnaires to 1,507 patients in Beijing, Qinghai, and Fujian. Patients' willingness of first visit in PMIs was analyzed using Chi-square test and binary logistic regression.ResultsOf the 1,507 participants in the survey, 55.1% were willing to make their first visit in PMIs. Fewer patients in Beijing (17.6%) are willing to make their first visit in PMIs than those in Qinghai (71.9%) and Fujian provinces (72.0%). Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that higher recognition of the community first visit policy and higher satisfaction with the medical technology of PMIs are associated with patients' willingness of first visit in PMIs.ConclusionsDue to differences in local economic conditions, medical resources, and policy formulation, there are differences among provinces in patients' willingness of first visit in PMIs. To increase patients' rate of visits in PMIs, it is important to improve service capacity and quality of PMIs and change residents' attitudes for PMIs.

Inflammation has emerged as a key player in regulating cancer initiation, progression, and therapeutics, acting as a double edged sword either facilitating cancer progression and therapeutic resistance or inducing anti-tumor immune responses. Accumulating evidence has linked the epigenetic modifications of histones to inflammation and cancer, and histone modifications-based strategies have shown promising therapeutic potentials against cancer. The jumonji C domain-containing (JMJD) family histone demethylases have exhibited multiple regulator functions in inflammatory processes and cancer development, and a number of therapeutic strategies targeting JMJD histone demethylases to modulate inflammatory cells and their products have been successfully evaluated in clinical or preclinical tumor models. This review summarizes current understanding of the functional roles and mechanisms of JMJD histone demethylases in crosstalk between inflammation and cancer, and highlights recent clinical and preclinical progress on harnessing the JMJD histone demethylases to regulate cancer-related inflammation for future cancer therapeutics.

BackgroundAcute type A aortic coarctation (AAAD) is a highly deadly and serious life-threatening disease. The purpose of this study was to estimate the predictive value of peak procalcitonin, interleukin-6, and C-reactive protein levels on adverse renal outcomes and mortality in patients undergoing surgery for AAAD.MethodsPerioperative peak PCT, CRP, and IL-6 levels were retrospectively collected in 331 patients hospitalized with AAAD from 2009 to 2021. The primary endpoints were AKI stage 2–3 and mortality. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to compare the predictive values of peak PCT, CRP, and IL-6 for different clinical outcomes. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to find risk factors for AKI and 30-day mortality.ResultsThe incidence of AKI stage 2–3 following AAAD was 50.8% (168/331). The 30-day and overall mortality were significantly greater in the AKI 2–3 group than in the AKI 0–1 group (P = 0.000). ROC curve analysis showed that peak PCT, with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.712, was a more accurate predictor of adverse renal outcomes than peak IL-6 and CRP. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that PCT > 0.39 ng/mL was an independent risk factor for AKI stage 2–3. Peak IL-6 > 259 pg/mL was found to be an independent risk factor for 30-day mortality.ConclusionIn patients with surgery for AAAD, peak PCT provides a well-predictive indicator of AKI stage 2–3 and peak IL-6 indicates a favorable predictor of 30-day mortality.

Abstract Repeatability and high adhesion toughness are usually contradictory for common polymer adhesives. Repeatability requires temporary interactions between the adhesive and the substrate, while high adhesion toughness is usually achieved by permanent bonding. Integrating these two features into one adhesive system is still a daunting challenge. Here, the development of a series of viscoelastic elastomers composed of a soft and hard segment is reported, which exhibit tough, instant, yet repeatable adhesion to a variety of soft and hard surfaces. Such a combination of mutually exclusive properties is attributed to the synergy of high mobility of polymer chains and massive viscoelastic dissipation of the elastomers around the interface. By optimizing the relaxation time and mechanical dissipation, the resulting adhesives can achieve a tough yet repeatable adhesion toughness above 2000 J m−2, superior to the best‐in‐class commercial adhesives. Numerous acrylate monomers are proven applicable to the preparation of such adhesives, validating the universality of the fabrication method. The application of these elastomers as adhesive and protective layers in soft electronics by virtue of their universal and tough adhesion to various soft and hard substrates is also demonstrated.

Herein, a scalable electrodeposition strategy is proposed to achieve hierarchical CuO/nickel–cobalt–sulfide (NCS) electrodes using two-step potentiostatic deposition followed by high-temperature calcination. The introduction of CuO provides support for the further deposition of NSC to ensure a high load of active electrode materials, thus generating more abundant active electrochemical sites. Meanwhile, dense deposited NSC nanosheets are connected to each other to form many chambers. Such a hierarchical electrode prompts a smooth and orderly transmission channel for electron transport, and reserves space for possible volume expansion during the electrochemical test process. As a result, the CuO/NCS electrode exhibits superior specific capacitance (Cs) of 4.26 F cm−2 at 20 mA cm−2 and remarkable coulombic efficiency of 96.37%. Furthermore, the cycle stability of the CuO/NCS electrode remains at 83.05% within 5000 cycles. The multistep electrodeposition strategy provides a basis and reference for the rational design of hierarchical electrodes to be applied in the field of energy storage.

Single-driver molecular events specific to the metabolic colorectal cancer (CRC) have not been clearly elucidated. Herein, we identified 12 functional miRNAs linked to activated metabolism by integrating multi-omics features in metabolic CRC. These miRNAs exhibited significantly enriched CRC driver miRNAs, significant impacts on CRC cell growth and significantly correlated metabolites. Importantly, miR-20a is minimally expressed in normal colorectal tissues but highly expressed in metabolic CRC, suggesting the potential therapeutic target. Bioinformatics analyses further revealed miR-20a as the most powerful determinant that regulates a cascade of dysregulated events, including Wnt signaling pathway, core enzymes involved in FA metabolism program and triacylglycerol abundances. In vitro assays demonstrated that elevated miR-20a up-regulated FA synthesis enzymes via Wnt/β-catenin signaling, and finally promoted proliferative and migration of metabolic CRC cells. Overall, our study revealed that miR-20a promoted progression of metabolic CRC by regulating FA metabolism and served as a potential target for preventing tumor metastasis.

Abstract Protein‐based hydrogels have attracted great attention due to their excellent biocompatible properties, but often suffer from weak mechanical strength. Conventional strengthening strategies for protein‐based hydrogels are to introduce nanoparticles or synthetic polymers for improving their mechanical strength, but often compromise their biocompatibility. Here, a new, general, protein unfolding‐chemical coupling (PNC) strategy is developed to fabricate pure protein hydrogels without any additives to achieve both high mechanical strength and excellent cell biocompatibility. This PNC strategy combines thermal‐induced protein unfolding/gelation to form a physically‐crosslinked network and a ‐NH2/‐COOH coupling reaction to generate a chemicallycrosslinked network. Using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a globular protein, PNC‐BSA hydrogels show macroscopic transparency, high stability, high mechanical properties (compressive/tensile strength of 115/0.43 MPa), fast stiffness/toughness recovery of 85%/91% at room temperature, good fatigue resistance, and low cell cytotoxicity and red blood cell hemolysis. More importantly, the PNC strategy can be not only generally applied to silk fibroin, ovalbumin, and milk albumin protein to form different, high strength protein hydrogels, but also modified with PEDOT/PSS nanoparticles as strain sensors and fluorescent fillers as color sensors. This work demonstrates a new, universal, PNC method to prepare high strength, multi‐functional, pure protein hydrogels beyond a few available today.

Introduction: Colorectal cancer is the third most common malignancy and the second most deadly cancer worldwide. In this present study, the effects of eupafolin on DMH-induced colon cancer in rats were assessed. Methods: The acute and sub-acute oral toxicity study in the balb/c mice was performed to evaluate the LD50 dose and the chemotherapeutic doses of eupafolin. The colon cancer was induced in the animals through a single intraperitoneal injection (i.p) of 30 mg/kg of dimethylhydrazine followed by 2% DSS for 7 days in the drinking water in male Wistar rats. The rats were treated with eupafolin (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg) through oral route for 18 weeks. The animals were sacrificed and colon tissues were subsequently investigated for aberrant crypt foci (ACF), in vivo antioxidant studies, histology and immunohistochemical analysis, and apoptosis by TUNNEL technique after 18 weeks of eupafolin therapy. Results: The acute oral toxicity data represented the LD50 dose of eupafolin which was found to be 500 mg/kg body weight. Along with that, the sub-acute toxicity study suggested the chemotherapeutic doses of eupafolin, that is, 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight. Eupafolin therapy inhibits ACF development in rat colon mucosa efficiently. Additionally, eupafolin has improved the colonic lesions and the structural integrity of the colonic mucosa. Eupafolin therapy causes anti-oxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione to increase as well. Increased levels of P53, BAX, and PCNA and a simultaneous decrease in Bcl2 and IL-6 expressions show eupafolin therapy successfully regulated these biological markers in colorectal cancer. Eupafolin also induced apoptosis efficiently in the rat colon mucous membrane. Conclusion: These results show that eupafolin can improve colon cancer by modulating the p53, Bcl2, BAX, and IL-6 pathways in rats.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic autoimmune disorder stemming from unrestrained immune activation and subsequent destruction of colon tissue. Genetic susceptibility, microbiota remodeling, and environmental cues are involved in IBD pathogenesis. Up to now, there are limited treatment options for IBD, so better therapies for IBD are eagerly needed. The therapeutic effects of naturally occurring compounds have been extensively investigated, among which quercetin becomes an attractive candidate owing to its unique biochemical properties. To facilitate the clinical translation of quercetin, we aimed to get a comprehensive understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the anti-IBD role of quercetin. We summarized that quercetin exerts the anti-IBD effect through consolidating the intestinal mucosal barrier, enhancing the diversity of colonic microbiota, restoring local immune homeostasis, and restraining the oxidative stress response. We also delineated the effect of quercetin on gut microbiome and discussed the potential side effects of quercetin administration. Besides, quercetin could serve as a prodrug, and the bioavailability of quercetin is improved through chemical modifications or the utilization of effective drug delivery systems. Altogether, these lines of evidence hint the feasibility of quercetin as a candidate compound for IBD treatment.

Broccoli sprouts have high isothiocyanate and selenium accumulation capacity. This study used a combination of methods, including physiological and biochemical, gene transcription and proteomic, to investigate the isothiocyanate and endogenous selenium accumulation mechanisms in broccoli sprouts under exogenous sodium selenite treatment during germination. Compared with the control, the sprouts length of broccoli sprouts under exogenous selenium treatment was significantly lower, and the contents of total phenol and malondialdehyde in 6-day-old broccoli sprouts were substantially higher. The contents of isothiocyanate and sulforaphane in 4-day-old were increased by up-regulating the relative expression of genes of UGT74B1, OX-1, and ST5b. The relative expression of BoSultr1;1, BoSMT, BoHMT1, and BoCOQ5-2 genes regulating selenium metabolism was significantly up-regulated. In addition, 354 proteins in 4-day-old broccoli sprouts showed different relative abundance compared to the control under selenium treatment. These proteins were classified into 14 functional categories. It was discovered that metabolic pathways and biosynthetic pathways of secondary metabolites were significantly enriched. The above results showed that exogenous selenium was beneficial in inducing the accumulation of isothiocyanate and selenium during the growth of broccoli sprouts.

To improve the reproductive performance of sows and the iron nutrition of newborn piglets, we studied the effects of dietary iron on reproductive performance in pregnant sows as well as antioxidant capacity and the visceral iron content of sows and newborn piglets. Forty pregnant sows were divided into four groups, the iron deficiency group (Id group) was fed a basic diet while sows in the treatment groups were fed diets supplemented with 200 mg/kg lactoferrin (LF group), 0.8% heme-iron (Heme-Fe group), or 500 mg/kg iron-glycine complex (Fe-Gly group). The results indicated that (1) different sources of iron had no significant effect on litter size, live litter size, and litter weight of sows; (2) the three additives improved iron nutrition in newborn piglets, with LF and Heme-Fe having better improvement effects; and (3) the addition of different iron sources improved the level of serum antioxidant biochemical indexes of sows and newborn piglets, and it can have an effect on gene level, among which lactoferrin has the best effect. Thus, adding LF, Heme-iron, or Fe-Gly to the diet of sows during the second and third trimester of gestation can improve the antioxidant capacity of the sows. The supplementation of LF in pregnant sow diets can also improve the antioxidant capacity and the iron nutrition of newborn piglets, with better additive effects than in Heme-Fe and Fe-Gly.

The traditional electrochemical deposition process used to prepare Cu(In, Ga)Se2 (CIGS) thin films has inherent flaws, such as the tendency to produce low-conductivity Ga2O3 phase and internal defects. In this article, CIGS thin films were prepared under vacuum (3 kPa), and the mechanism of vacuum electrodeposition CIGS was illustrated. The route of Ga incorporation into the thin films could be controlled in a vacuum environment via inhibiting pH changes at the cathode region. Through the incorporation of a low-conductivity secondary phase, Ga2O3 was inhibited at 3 kPa, as shown by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The preparation process used a higher current density and a lower diffusion impedance and charge transfer impedance. The films that were produced had larger particle sizes.

A method of establishing a prediction model of the greenhouse temperature based on time-series analysis and the boosting tree model is proposed, aiming at the problem that the temperature of a greenhouse cannot be accurately predicted owing to nonlinear changes in the temperature of the closed ecosystem of a greenhouse featuring modern agricultural technology and various influencing factors. This model comprehensively considers environmental parameters, including humidity inside and outside the greenhouse, air pressure inside and outside the greenhouse, and temperature outside the greenhouse, as well as time-series changes, to make a more accurate prediction of the temperature in the greenhouse. Experiments show that the R2 determination coefficients of different prediction models are improved and the mean square error and mean absolute error are reduced after adding time-series features. Among the models tested, LightGBM performs best, with the mean square error of the prediction results of the model decreasing by 18.61% after adding time-series features. Comparing with the support vector machine, radial basis function neural network, back-propagation neural network, and multiple linear regression model after adding time-series features, the mean square error is 11.70% to 29.12% lower. Furthermore, the fitting degree of LightGBM is the best among the models. The prediction results of LightGBM therefore have important application value in greenhouse temperature control.

Herein, nickel–cobalt sulfide (NCS) nanoflakes covering the surface of Cu(OH)2 nanorods were achieved by a facile two-step electrodeposition strategy. The effect of CH4N2S concentration on formation mechanism and electrochemical behavior is investigated and optimized. Thanks to the synergistic effect of the selected composite components, the Cu(OH)2/NCS composite electrode can deliver a high areal specific capacitance (Cs) of 7.80 F cm−2 at 2 mA cm−2 and sustain 5.74 F cm−2 at 40 mA cm−2. In addition, coulombic efficiency was up to 84.30% and cyclic stability remained 82.93% within 5000 cycles at 40 mA cm−2. This innovative work provides an effective strategy for the design and construction of hierarchical composite electrodes for the development of energy storage devices.

Background: Few studies on the risk factors for postoperative continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in a homogeneous population of patients with acute type A aortic dissection (AAAD). This retrospective analysis aimed to investigate the risk factors for CRRT and in-hospital mortality in the patients undergoing AAAD surgery and to discuss the perioperative comorbidities and short-term outcomes.Methods: The study collected electronic medical records and laboratory data from 432 patients undergoing surgery for AAAD between March 2009 and June 2021. All the patients were divided into CRRT and non-CRRT groups; those in the CRRT group were divided into the survivor and non-survivor groups. The univariable and multivariable analyses were used to identify the independent risk factors for CRRT and in-hospital mortality.Results: The proportion of requiring CRRT and in-hospital mortality in the patients with CRRT was 14.6 and 46.0%, respectively. Baseline serum creatinine (SCr) [odds ratio (OR), 1.006], cystatin C (OR, 1.438), lung infection (OR, 2.292), second thoracotomy (OR, 5.185), diabetes mellitus (OR, 6.868), AKI stage 2–3 (OR, 22.901) were the independent risk factors for receiving CRRT. In-hospital mortality in the CRRT group (46%) was 4.6 times higher than in the non-CRRT group (10%). In the non-survivor (n = 29) and survivor (n = 34) groups, New York Heart Association (NYHA) class III-IV (OR, 10.272, P = 0.019), lactic acidosis (OR, 10.224, P = 0.019) were the independent risk factors for in-hospital mortality in patients receiving CRRT.Conclusion: There was a high rate of CRRT requirement and high in-hospital mortality after AAAD surgery. The risk factors for CRRT and in-hospital mortality in the patients undergoing AAAD surgery were determined to help identify the high-risk patients and make appropriate clinical decisions. Further randomized controlled studies are urgently needed to establish the risk factors for CRRT and in-hospital mortality.

With the decline of cultivated land quality and area in recent decades, the intensification of land use plays an important role in meeting the growing demand for food. Cropping intensity refers to the number of crop planting cycles in one year, which is important for improving food production and safety at the local, regional and national scales. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an accurate high spatial resolution dataset of cropping intensity. The existing datasets of cropping intensity were generally developed based on MODIS or Landsat images, both of which have defects in spatial and temporal resolutions. In this paper, we improved the quality of the dataset on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, and developed a new algorithm incorporating crop phenology. The algorithm was based on the Landsat 7/8 and Sentine-2A/B time series imageries to map the 30 m cropping intensity in the Huaihe basin in 2018 by extracting complete growth cycle. Results show that single cropping, double cropping and triple cropping in the Huaihe basin accounted for 41.6%, 57.7% and 0.7% of the total cultivated area in 2018, respectively, and the proportion of multiple cropping reached 58.4%. The accuracy of single cropping, double cropping and triple cropping are 92.93%, 91.39%, and 72.78% respectively. The overall accuracy is 91.38% and the kappa coefficient is 0.84. This algorithm accurately captures the seasonal dynamics of planting patterns in arable land, which can be used to produce cropping intensity products with high-resolution and provide a reference for large-scale regional vegetation monitoring.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) in croplands is a key property of soil quality for ensuring food security and agricultural sustainability, and also plays a central role in the global carbon (C) budget. When managed sustainably, soils may play a critical role in mitigating climate change by sequestering C and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. However, the magnitude and spatio-temporal patterns of global cropland SOC are far from well constrained due to high land surface heterogeneity, complicated mechanisms, and multiple influencing factors. Here, we use a process-based agroecosystem model (DLEM-Ag) in combination with diverse spatially-explicit gridded environmental data to quantify the long-term trend of SOC storage in global cropland area during 1901-2010 and identify the relative impacts of climate change, elevated CO2, nitrogen deposition, land cover change, and land management practices such as nitrogen fertilizer use and irrigation. Model results show that the total SOC and SOC density in the 2000s increased by 125% and 48.8%, respectively, compared to the early 20th century. This SOC increase was primarily attributed to cropland expansion and nitrogen fertilizer use. Factorial analysis suggests that climate change reduced approximately 3.2% (or 2,166 Tg C) of the total SOC over the past 110 years. Our results indicate that croplands have a large potential to sequester C through implementing better land use management practices, which may partially offset SOC loss caused by climate change.

Abstract Background There is a lack of well-established clinical tools for predicting dendritic cell (DC) vaccination response of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). DC vaccine treatment efficiency was demonstrated using histological analysis in pre-clinical studies; however, its usage was limited due to invasiveness. In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential of MRI texture features for detection of early immunotherapeutic response as well as overall survival (OS) of PDAC subjects following dendritic cell (DC) vaccine treatment in LSL-Kras G12D ;LSL-Trp53 R172H ;Pdx-1-Cre (KPC) transgenic mouse model of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Materials and methods KPC mice were treated with DC vaccines, and tumor growth was dynamically monitored. A total of a hundred and fifty-two image features of T2-weighted MRI images were analyzed using a kernel-based support vector machine model to detect treatment effects following the first and third weeks of the treatment. Moreover, univariate analysis was performed to describe the association between MRI texture and survival of KPC mice as well as histological tumor biomarkers. Results OS for mice in the treatment group was 54.8 ± 22.54 days while the control group had 35.39 ± 17.17 days. A subset of three MRI features distinguished treatment effects starting from the first week with increasing accuracy throughout the treatment (75% to 94%). Abstract Background We developed a computational model integrating clinical data and imaging features extracted from contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) images, to predict lymph node (LN) metastasis in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Methods This retrospective study included 159 patients with PDAC (118 in the primary cohort and 41 in the validation cohort) who underwent preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography examination between 2012 and 2015. All patients underwent surgery and lymph node status was determined. A total of 2041 radiomics features were extracted from venous phase images in the primary cohort, and optimal features were extracted to construct a radiomics signature. A combined prediction model was built by incorporating the radiomics signature and clinical characteristics selected by using multivariable logistic regression. Clinical prediction models were generated and used to evaluate both cohorts. Results Fifteen features were selected for constructing the radiomics signature based on the primary cohort. The combined prediction model for identifying preoperative lymph node metastasis reached a better discrimination power than the clinical prediction model, with an area under the curve of 0.944 vs. 0.666 in the primary cohort, and 0.912 vs. 0.713 in the validation cohort. Conclusions This pilot study demonstrated that a noninvasive radiomics signature extracted from contrast-enhanced computed tomography imaging can be conveniently used for preoperative prediction of lymph node metastasis in patients with PDAC.

This study was to evaluate the protective effect of fucoidan on the intestinal mucosal barrier in non-obese diabetic mice (NOD). Twenty NOD mice were randomly assigned to two groups: the control group and the fucoidan intervention group which were fed with fucoidan at a concentration of 600 mg/kg BW (body weight) per day for five weeks. Mice treated with fucoidan had a significant improvement in glycemic control, and the proportions of Th1/Th2/Th17 cells and the levels of endotoxin, DAO and D-LA were reduced. Fucoidan treatment improved intestinal barrier function by increasing ZO-1, claudin-1 and Occludin protein expression. Moreover, the expression levels of phosphorylated ERK1/2, NF-кB p65 and p38 MAPK were decreased. Our result suggested that pre-treatment with fucoidan could attenuate the inflammatory response and maintain intestinal barrier function in NOD mice. Fucoidan-based functional food may be potential for the prevention of T1DM (type 1 diabetes mellitus).

Abstract Background Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer globally and neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) and surgery are the standard treatments for locally advanced colorectal carcinoma. This study investigated the association between dynamic changes in absolute lymphocyte counts (ALCs) and disease-free survival (DFS) in rectal cancer patients receiving nCRT and identified factors associated with these changes. Methods We retrospectively examined 34 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer who received nCRT followed by surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. The association between ALCs and DFS and that between ALCs and downstaging were analyzed and potential clinical- and treatment-related factors related to dynamic changes in ALCs were subsequently evaluated. The patient eligibility criteria were as follows: pathologically confirmed rectal adenocarcinoma, clinical stages II–III, ≥ 18 years of age, and so on. Pre-RTL was defined as ALCs obtained before the initiation of nCRT and pre-SL was defined as ALCs obtained before surgery. We measured pre-SL to pre-RTL ratio (pre-SLR), DFS, and ALCs. Results The median ALC declined significantly during nCRT. A lower pre-SLR was associated with poorer DFS with statistical significance in Kaplan–Meier (p = 0.007), univariate regression (hazard ratio [HR] = 6.287, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.374–28.781, p = 0.018), and multivariable regression (HR = 7.347, 95% CI 1.595–33.850, p = 0.011) analyses. Neither patient characteristics nor treatment-related factors were related to downstaging. The pelvic bone marrow (PBM) volume receiving at least 30 Gy (V30) was significantly associated with pre-SLR in the univariate (HR = 5.760, 95% CI 1.317–25.187, p = 0.020) and multivariable (HR = 5.760, 95% CI 1.317–25.187, p = 0.020) regression analyses. Limitations Our study had several limitations. The sample size was small and the study was performed in a selected population, which may limit the generalization of the findings. Conclusions Radiotherapy had a profound impact on the change in ALCs. A lower pre-SLR was significantly associated with poorer DFS in rectal cancer patients receiving nCRT. The V30 of PBM was a predictor of pre-SLR.

Abstract Gynostemma pentaphyllum, a member of family Cucurbitaceae, is a perennial creeping herb used as a traditional medicinal plant in China. In this study, six polymorphic nSSR and four EST‐SSR primers were used to genotype 1,020 individuals in 72 wild populations of G. pentaphyllum. The genetic diversity and population structure were investigated, and ecological niche modeling was performed to reveal the evolution and demographic history of its natural populations. The results show that G. pentaphyllum has a low level of genetic diversity and high level of variation among populations because of pervasive asexual propagation, genetic drift, and long‐term habitat isolation. Results of the Mantel test demonstrate that the genetic distance and geographic distance are significantly correlated among G. pentaphyllum natural populations. The populations can be divided into two clusters on the basis of genetic structure. Asymmetrical patterns of historical gene flow were observed among the clusters. For the contemporary, almost all the bidirectional gene flow of the related pairs was symmetrical with slight differences. Recent bottlenecks were experienced by 34.72% of the studied populations. The geographic range of G. pentaphyllum continues to expand northward and eastward from Hengduan Mountains. The present distribution of G. pentaphyllum is a consequence of its complex evolution. Polyploidy in G. pentaphyllum is inferred to be polygenetic. Finally, G. pentaphyllum is a species in need of protection, so in situ and ex situ measures should be considered in the future.

An efficient function-based encoding scheme in the cloud environment for detecting the cloned Apps was designed,called Pentagon.Firstly,a basic block feature extraction method was proposed.Secondly,a monotonic encoding algorithm for the App function was designed,which encoded the function based on the control flow graph structure and basic block attributes.Finally,a three-party libraries filtering method was proposed by using an efficient clustering algorithm based on the function feature.Experiments verified the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.The average search time is close to 79 ms,and the clone detection accuracy achieves 97.6%.

Abstract Treatment with selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) is an effective technology applied recently for conversion of nitrogen oxides pollution control. In order to solve the problems of high cost and difficulties in practical application of SCO catalyst, it was put forward using the solid waste sludge from soybean oil plant as catalyst carrier to prepare denitration catalyst. The sludge was treated by alkaline activation and then MnOx-based sludge was prepared by impregnation. Finally, MnOx-based sludge was calcined in the muffle furnace. The effects of activation and calcination conditions on catalyst activity were investigated. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the activity of the sludge based denitration catalyst, and the structure and activity of the sludge based denitration catalyst were furtherly confirmed. According to the achieved results, (1) after activated by LiOH with a mass concentration of 15% for 4 hours, the surface of the sludge catalyst has more alkali functional groups, making the denitration of sludge catalyst the best; (2) the MnOx-based catalyst calcined in the muffle furnace with calcination temperature of 450 °C for 4 hours has obvious denitration efficiency.

Space-based gravitational wave (GW) detection at low frequencies is of great scientific significance and has received extensive attention in recent years. This work designs and optimizes the low-energy transfer of the heliocentric formation of GW detectors, which starts from a geosynchronous transfer orbit and targets an Earth-like orbit. Based on the example of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), the transfer is first designed in two-body dynamical models and then refined in simplified high-fidelity dynamical models that only consider the major orbital perturbations evaluated here. The main contributions of this work are to present an adaptive model continuation technique and to exploit the lunar swingby technique to reduce the problem-solving difficulty and velocity increment of orbital transfer, respectively. The adaptive model continuation technique fully reveals the effect of perturbations and rapidly iterates the solutions to the simplified models. The simulation results show that the lunar swingby does reduce the energy needed to escape the Earth’s sphere of influence. It is found that the gravitation of the Earth–Moon system has a significant contribution to reducing the velocity increment. The solution of low-energy transfer in the simplified models is that the duration is 360.6615 days and the total velocity increment is 0.8468 km/s.

The high crystal quality and low dislocation densities of aluminum nitride (AlN) grown on flat and nano-patterned sapphire substrate that are synthesized by the metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) method are essential for the realization of high-efficiency deep ultraviolet light-emitting diodes. The micro-strains of 0.18 × 10−3 cm−2 for flat substrate AlN and 0.11 × 10−3 cm−2 for nano-patterned substrate AlN are obtained by X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The screw and edge dislocation densities of samples are determined by XRD and transmission electron microscope (TEM), and the results indicate that the nano-patterned substrates are effective in reducing the threading dislocation density. The mechanism of the variation of the threading dislocation in AlN films grown on flat and nano-patterned substrates is investigated comparatively. The etch pit density (EPD) determined by preferential chemical etching is about 1.04 × 108 cm−2 for AlN grown on a nano-patterned substrate, which is slightly smaller than the results obtained by XRD and TEM investigation. Three types of etch pits with different sizes are all revealed on the AlN surface using the hot KOH etching method.
