162. Doppler Lidar System Design via Interdisciplinary Design Concept at NASA Langley Research Center - Part I

Abstract

Optimized designs of the Navigation Doppler Lidar (NDL) instrument for Autonomous Landing Hazard Avoidance Technology (ALHAT) were accomplished via Interdisciplinary Design Concept (IDEC) at NASA Langley Research Center during the summer of 2013. Three branches in the Engineering Directorate and three students were involved in this joint task through the NASA Langley Aerospace Research Summer Scholars (LARSS) Program. The Laser Remote Sensing Branch (LRSB), Mechanical Systems Branch (MSB), and Structural and Thermal Systems Branch (STSB) were engaged to achieve optimal designs through iterative and interactive collaborative design processes. A preliminary design iteration was able to reduce the power consumption, mass, and footprint by removing redundant components and replacing inefficient components with more efficient ones. A second design iteration reduced volume and mass by replacing bulky components with excessive performance with smaller components custom-designed for the power system. Mechanical placement collaboration reduced potential electromagnetic interference (EMI). Through application of newly selected electrical components and thermal analysis data, a total electronic chassis redesign was accomplished. Use of an innovative forced convection tunnel heat sink was employed to meet and exceed project requirements for cooling, mass reduction, and volume reduction. Functionality was a key concern to make efficient use of airflow, and accessibility was also imperative to allow for servicing of chassis internals. The collaborative process provided for accelerated design maturation with substantiated function.

Abstract

Receptor-activated phosphoinositide (PI) 3-kinases produce Ptdlns(3,4,5)P(sub 3) and its metabolite Ptdlns(3,4)P(sub 2) that function as second messengers in membrane recruitment and activation of target proteins. The cytohesin and centaurin protein families are potential targets for Ptdlns(3,4,5)P(sub 3) that also regulate and interact with Arf GTPases. Consequently, these families are poised to transduce PI 3-kinase activation into coordinated control of Arf-dependent pathways. Proposed downstream events in PI 3-kinaseregulated Arf cascades include modulation of vesicular trafficking and the actin cytoskeleton.

Abstract

Prospective flight-like optical mounts for the Climate Absolute Radiance and Refractivity Observatory (CLARREO) Infrared (IR) instrument were designed, fabricated, and vibration and shock tested as part of a larger instrument design activity. Optic mount assemblies were designed to remove the need for alignment adjustments, and instead rely on fabrication tolerances to achieve alignment on some, but not all, of the optical elements in the system. This work sought to assess the ability of the optic mount assemblies to meet as designed specifications, with regard to fabrication tolerances and tolerance stack up during assembly, and assess the ability of the optic mount assemblies to retain position when introduced to vibration and shock environments for the prospective launch vehicle, a Pegasus XL. Two variations of optical mount design were compared and tested concurrently at Langley Research Center (LaRC). The results will be utilized in future instrument system design.

Abstract

A protein receptor for inositol 1,3,4,5-tetrakisphosphate, Ins(1,3,4,5)P4, has been purified from stimulated cell tissue that specifically binds Ins(1,4,5)P3. The protein shows a specificity for Ins(1,3,4,5)P4's isomeric configuration and has a high affinity for it. The behavior the protein and its in vitro GAP activity against Ras and Rap indicate a GTPase-activating protein of the GAP1 family while Ras GAP activity is stimulated by Ins(1,3,4,5)P4 and inhibited by phospholipids.
