No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 Global warming is likely to cause a progressive drought increase in some regions, but how population and natural resources will be affected is still underexplored. This study focuses on global population and land-use (forests, croplands, pastures) exposure to meteorological drought hazard in the 21st century, expressed as frequency and severity of drought events. As input, we use a large ensemble of climate simulations from the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment, population projections from the NASA-SEDAC dataset, and land-use projections from the Land-Use Harmonization 2 project for 1981–2100. The exposure to drought hazard is presented for five SSPs (SSP1-SSP5) at four Global Warming Levels (GWLs, from 1.5 to 4°C). Results show that considering only Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI; based on precipitation), the combination SSP3-GWL4 projects the largest fraction of the global population (14%) to experience an increase in drought frequency and severity (vs. 1981–2010), with this value increasing to 60% if temperature is considered (indirectly included in the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index, SPEI). With SPEI, considering the highest GWL for each SSP, 8 (for SSP2, SSP4, and SSP5) and 11 (SSP3) billion people, that is, more than 90%, will be affected by at least one unprecedented drought. For SSP5 (fossil-fuelled development) at GWL 4°C, approximately 2·106 km2 of forests and croplands (respectively, 6 and 11%) and 1.5·106 km2 of pastures (19%) will be exposed to increased drought frequency and severity according to SPI, but for SPEI, this extent will rise to 17·106 km2 of forests (49%), 6·106 km2 of pastures (78%), and 12·106 km2 of croplands (67%), with mid-latitudes being the most affected areas. The projected likely increase of drought frequency and severity significantly increases population and land-use exposure to drought, even at low GWLs, thus extensive mitigation and adaptation efforts are needed to avoid the most severe impacts of climate change. Der durch den Menschen verursachte Klimawandel ist eine der drängendsten Herausforderungen der Gegenwart. Die Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft leistet wichtige Beiträge um die Ursachen der klimatischen Veränderung einzudämmen und Anpassungsmöglichkeiten zu finden. Mit der Helmholtz-Klima- Initiative konzentriert sich die Forschung auf die beiden Schwerpunkte „Vermeidung von Emissionen“ und „Anpassung an Klimafolgen“. In Netto-Null-2050, Cluster I der Helmholtz-Klima- Initiative, werden Strategien und Wege zur Minderung von Kohlenstoff Emissionen wissenschaftlich untersucht und bewertet. Im Clusters I werden zwei Formate entwickelt, mit denen die komplexen Ergebnisse der Forschung verständlich gezeigt werden können. Mit dem web-basierten Netto-Null- Atlas wird der Nutzer zu verschiedenen Methoden und Technologien zur CO2-Verminderung, sowie zu möglichen Reduzierungspfaden informiert. Die native Boden-Kohlenstoff-App ermöglicht Akteuren in der Landwirtschaft, Potentiale für Klimaschutz durch landwirtschaftliche Managementmethoden abzuschätzen. Mit dem Landoberflächenmodell CLM werden Zukunftsszenarien simuliert, die über cloud-basierte, modell-gesteuerte Workflows in der App dargestellt werden. Beide Formate haben das Ziel die Nutzer in Entscheidungen und bei der Entwicklung von Strategien zu unterstützen. Wichtige Ziele während der Arbeit an den Produkten sind u.a. eine gute Verständlichkeit, Transparenz und eine angemessene Informationsaufbereitung. Dabei werden beispielsweise im Atlas verschiedene Abstraktionslevel eingeführt, die den Nutzern mit sehr unterschiedlichem Vorwissen und Informationsbedarf Erkenntnisgewinne ermöglichen. Daneben ergibt sich unter dem Aspekt der Transparenz z.B. die Frage, wie in der App mit der Thematik „Unsicherheiten“ umgegangen werden kann. Der Beitrag stellt die beiden Disseminations-Produkte sowie die Herausforderungen und Lösungsansätze aus der Entwicklungsarbeit vor.

Das H2020-Projekt OPERANDUM untersucht die Wirksamkeit und Effektivität von Nature-Based Solution zur Bewältigung hydro-meteorologischer Risiken in Fallstudien. Die deutsche Fallstudie konzentriert sich auf den Hochwasserschutz im Biosphärenreservat "Niedersächsische Elbtalaue". Hier sind Struktur und Gestaltung der Elbaue entscheidend, um den extremen Hochwasserereignissen der jüngsten Zeit entgegenzuwirken. An den Ufern der Elbe und in den unteren Auenbereichen stellt sich vor allem die Frage, wo aus Abflussgründen Flächen von höherer Vegetation freigehalten werden können und wo andererseits eine Auenwaldentwicklung toleriert und, oder sogar aufgeforstet werden kann. Alle Aktivitäten im Biosphärenreservat müssen sowohl den Zielen des Hochwasserschutzes als auch den Interessen der Landwirtschaft und des Naturschutzes dienen. Von besonderem Interesse sind daher naturnahe Lösungen. Eine Lösung zu finden, die alle Interessen berücksichtigt, ist das Ziel des Projektes Kooperatives Auenmanagement. Seit 2016 besteht das Projekt, das sich mit Fragen der Erhaltung, Pflege, Bewirtschaftung und Entwicklung der Elbaue im Biosphärenreservat befasst. Es wird im Rahmen der Förderrichtlinie "Landschaftspflege und Flächenmanagement" mit Mitteln des Landes Niedersachsen und der Europäischen Union gefördert. Dazu werden auf der Ebene der kommunalen Referenzgebiete neue Kooperationsstrukturen aufgebaut und effektiv vernetzt. Auf diese Weise werden gemeinsam mit den Betrieben vor Ort Maßnahmen und Strategien entwickelt und ein angepasstes Flächenmanagement koordiniert. Dazu gehören Fragen nach der Wirksamkeit von Pflegeverfahren, wie z.B. Weidevieh für die Landschaftsgestaltung, aber auch der Umgang mit Kontaminationsrisiken bei der Beweidung. Im Rahmen von OPERANDUM nimmt das GERICS in Zusammenarbeit mit der Biosphärenreservats-Verwaltung den Prozess der Ko-Entwicklung innerhalb des kooperativen Auenmanagements genauer unter die Lupe und untersucht die Übertragbarkeit dieses Konzepts auf andere Regionen sowie die Wirksamkeit dieses Konzepts unter den Bedingungen des Klimawandels.

This paper presents a novel data set of regional climate model simulations over Europe that significantly improves our ability to detect changes in weather extremes under low and moderate levels of global warming. The data set provides a unique and physically consistent data set, as it is derived from a large ensemble of regional climate model simulations. These simulations were driven by two global climate models from the international HAPPI consortium. The set consists of 100 × 10-year simulations and 25 × 10-year simulations, respectively. These large ensembles allow for regional climate change and weather extremes to be investigated with an improved signal-to-noise ratio compared to previous climate simulations. The changes in four climate indices for temperature targets of 1.5 °C and 2.0 °C global warming are quantified: number of days per year with daily mean near-surface apparent temperature of > 28 °C (ATG28); the yearly maximum 5-day sum of precipitation (RX5day); the daily precipitation intensity of the 50-yr return period (RI50yr); and the annual Consecutive Dry Days (CDD). This work shows that even for a small signal in projected global mean temperature, changes of extreme temperature and precipitation indices can be robustly estimated. For temperature related indices changes in percentiles can also be estimated with high confidence. Such data can form the basis for tailor-made climate information that can aid adaptive measures at a policy-relevant scales, indicating potential impacts at low levels of global warming at steps of 0.5 °C.
