Plasmonic/metamaterial sensors are being investigated for their high sensitivity, fast response time, and high accuracy. We propose, characterize and experimentally realize subwavelength bilayer metamaterial sensors operating in the near-infrared domain. We measure the figure-of-merit (FOM) and the bulk sensitivity (S) of the two fundamental hybridized modes and demonstrate both numerically and experimentally that the magnetic dipolar mode, degenerate with the electric quadrupolar mode, has higher sensitivity to a variation of the refractive index compared to the electric dipolar mode. In addition, the hybridized system exhibits a four fold increase in the FOM compared to a standard dipolar plasmonic system.

In this paper, total internal reflection (TIR) mirror is carefully simulated for silicon nitride polygonal ring resonator sensor structure. Polygonal resonator has recently attracted much attention for applications in bio and chemical sensors because it does not have a bending loss, and it has an advantage of using MMI coupler. In polygonal resonator sensor design, high Q-factor and low TIR mirror loss are extremely significant factors. Therefore, critical angle and Goos-Hanchen shift should be considered in the design of TIR mirror. When cladding material is SiO2, the critical angle of SiNx waveguide is about 44.99 degrees and the Goos-Hanchen shift is about 400 nm at 1.55 μm wavelength. For the rib type waveguide, we designed it to have 3 μm width, 1 μm height, and 0.5 μm etching depth for decreasing TIR mirror loss. As simulation results of FDTD, reflectivitities of polygonal TIR mirrors are 79% for pentagon, 95% for hexagon and 98% for octagon, respectively. According to the simulations, Q-factors for hexagonal and octagonal resonators can be obtained as high as 1.55 x 104 and 1.72 x 104, respectively.

Using full wave simulations and a transmission matrix approach, we design and then realize random metasurface lenses with anisotropic nanorods, and show that we can obtain a diffraction limited focal spot for all polarizations.

Antila et al. show that meningeal lymphatic vessels in mice develop postnatally. Interruption of VEGF-C/VEGFR3 signal transduction arrests their development. In adult mice, VEGFR3 deletion and VEGFR3 blockers, including a clinically available tyrosine kinase inhibitor, induce regression of meningeal lymphatic vessels., The recent discovery of meningeal lymphatic vessels (LVs) has raised interest in their possible involvement in neuropathological processes, yet little is known about their development or maintenance. We show here that meningeal LVs develop postnatally, appearing first around the foramina in the basal parts of the skull and spinal canal, sprouting along the blood vessels and cranial and spinal nerves to various parts of the meninges surrounding the central nervous system (CNS). VEGF-C, expressed mainly in vascular smooth muscle cells, and VEGFR3 in lymphatic endothelial cells were essential for their development, whereas VEGF-D deletion had no effect. Surprisingly, in adult mice, the LVs showed regression after VEGF-C or VEGFR3 deletion, administration of the tyrosine kinase inhibitor sunitinib, or expression of VEGF-C/D trap, which also compromised the lymphatic drainage function. Conversely, an excess of VEGF-C induced meningeal lymphangiogenesis. The plasticity and regenerative potential of meningeal LVs should allow manipulation of cerebrospinal fluid drainage and neuropathological processes in the CNS.

Breast cancer mainly spreads to bone, causing decreased survival of patient. Human antigen R (HuR) and chemokines are important molecules associated with mRNA stability and cell-cell interaction in cancer biology. Here, HuR knockdown inhibited bone metastasis and osteolysis of metastatic breast cancer cells in mice and HuR expression promoted the metastatic ability of cancer cells via CCL20 and GM-CSF. In contrast with the findings for GM-CSF, ELAVL1 and CCL20 expressions were markedly increased in breast tumor tissues and ELAVL1 expression showed a strong positive correlation with CCL20 expression in breast cancer subtypes, particularly the basal-like subtype. Metastasis-free survival and overall survival were decreased in the breast cancer patients with high CCL20 expression. We further confirmed the role of CCL20 in breast cancer bone metastasis. Intraperitoneal administration of anti-CCL20 antibodies inhibited osteolytic breast cancer bone metastasis in mice. Treatment with CCL20 noticeably promoted cell invasion and the secretion of MMP-2/9 in the basal-like triple-negative breast cancer cell lines, not the luminal. Moreover, CCL20 elevated the receptor activator of nuclear factors kappa-B ligand/osteoprotegerin ratio in breast cancer and osteoblastic cells and mediated the crosstalk between these cells. Collectively, HuR-regulated CCL20 may be an attractive therapeutic target for breast cancer bone metastasis.

Myocardial Ca(2+) overload induced by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) is a major element of myocardial dysfunction in heart failure. Phospholipase C (PLC) plays important roles in the regulation of the phosphoinositol pathway and Ca(2+) homeostasis in various types of cells. Here, we investigated the protective role of PLCδ1 against myocardial I/R injury through the regulation of Ca(2+) homeostasis. To investigate its role, PLCδ1 was fused to Hph1, a cell-permeable protein transduction domain (PTD), and treated into rat neonatal cardiomyocytes and rat hearts under respective hypoxia-reoxygenation (H/R) and ischemia-reperfusion conditions. Treatment with Hph1-PLCδ1 significantly inhibited intracellular Ca(2+) overload, reactive oxygen species generation, mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening, and mitochondrial membrane potential elevation in H/R neonatal cardiomyocytes, resulting in the inhibition of apoptosis. Intravenous injections of Hph1-PLCδ1 in rats with I/R-injured myocardium caused significant reductions in infarct size and apoptosis and also improved systolic and diastolic cardiac functioning. Furthermore, a small ions profile obtained using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry showed that treatment with Hph1-PLCδ1 leads to significant recovery of calcium-related ions toward normal levels in I/R-injured myocardium. These results suggest that Hph1-PLCδ1 may manifest as a promising cardioprotective drug due to its inhibition of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway in cells suffering from I/R injury.

Redox cycling based on an interdigitated electrode (IDE) was used as a highly sensitive immunoassay for carcinogenic embryonic antigen (CEA) through the quantification of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). For the redox cycling process, one pair of interdigitated finger electrodes was used as the first working electrode (generator) for cyclic voltammetry of TMB, and another pair of interdigitated finger electrodes was used as the second working electrode (collector) for sequential application of potentials for reduction and oxidation of TMB. The reduction (and oxidation) products of TMB at the collector were supplied to the generator, and following sequential oxidization (and reduction) at the generator, again supplied to the collector. Such redox recycling processes between the generator and collector allowed signal amplification. In this work, the influences of the following factors on the redox cycling of TMB were analyzed: (1) the redox potential at the collector, (2) the gap between the interdigitated finger electrodes, and (3) the scan rate of the generator. The redox potential and electrode gap influences were simulated with COMSOL software and compared with empirical results. At the optimum redox potentials and electrode gap, redox cycling was estimated to be five-fold more sensitive for the quantification of TMB than conventional cyclic voltammetry using one pair of interdigitated finger electrodes as the working electrode. Finally, redox cycling was applied to a commercial immunoassay for CEA, and the sensitivity of redox cycling was three-fold higher than that of conventional cyclic voltammetry using a single set of interdigitated finger electrodes as the working electrode.

We demonstrate significant enhancement of an effective Q-factor in a silica planar waveguide-based asymmetric Mach–Zehnder interferometer (AMZI) coupled with a microdisk. To enhance the Q-factor, which is required to more effectively measure the signal changes occurring during biochemical events, the structure utilizes resonance mode splitting. This phenomenon is observed through power cancellation at the same amplitude and a 180° phase difference of each path in the AMZI. In this study, we experimentally showed the effective Q-factor enhancement by comparing resonance characteristics of a fabricated microdisk, AMZI, and the proposed structure at equal fabrication conditions. We measured an effective Q-factor of 9.15 × 104 with a 22 dB extinction ratio.

Home appliance manufacturers have recently been trying to provide smart products capable of various Internet services. For example, one health care manufacturer provides a Wi-Fi-capable scale. Once users register their information with the manufacturer's server, their weight and body fat records are automatically uploaded to the server whenever they measure their weight. The users can then watch and check their weight log easily using a smart device, such as a smartphone or tablet. One of the biggest problems, however, is that the initial configuration of the appliances and the user registration process may be quite complicated to typical users who are unfamiliar with such IT devices. This paper proposes an autoconfiguration system structure and protocol for Internet-capable home appliances, which supports the initial configuration and remote maintenance service of the device with only little user effort. Manufacturers can develop their own information appliances and provide differentiated services using the proposed system and protocol.

We propose a fabrication method for a zero-pretilt nematic liquid crystal cell using UV-curable polymer. The zero pretilt angle can be obtained by UV curing of reactive mesogen monomers mixed with planar alignment material while a vertical electric field is applied to a liquid crystal cell assembled after the rubbing process. We demonstrate that the pretilt angle of a nematic liquid crystal cell can be decreased to 0.082° by employing the proposed method.

A colorimetric sandwich-type assay based on enzyme-linked aptamer assay has been developed for the fast and sensitive detection of as low as 25 fM of thrombin with high linearity. Aptamer-immobilized glass was used to capture the target analyte, whereas a second aptamer, functionalized with horseradish peroxidase (HRP), was employed for the conventional 3,5,3′,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB)-based colorimetric detection. Without the troublesome antibody requirement of the conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), as low as 25 fM of thrombin could be rapidly and reproducibly detected. This assay has superior, or at least equal, recovery and accuracy to that of conventional antibody-based ELISA.

MicroRNAs (miRNA) are involved in the regulation of cell response, including survival, proliferation, apoptosis, and development. However, the roles of miRNAs in Ca{sup 2+}-mediated apoptosis of cardiomyocytes are uncertain. Here, we determined the potential role of miRNA in the regulation of CaMKII dependent apoptosis and explored its underlying mechanism. To determine the potential roles of miRNAs in H{sub 2}O{sub 2}-mediated Ca{sup 2+} overload, we selected and tested 6 putative miRNAs that targeted CaMKIIδ, and showed that miR-145 represses CaMKIIδ protein expression and Ca{sup 2+} overload. We confirmed CaMKIIδ as a direct downstream target of miR-145. Furthermore, miR-145 regulates Ca{sup 2+}-related signals and ameliorates apoptosis. Emerging evidence suggests that cell therapy with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has beneficial effects on the injured heart. However, the decreased survival and/or adhesion of MSCs under ischemic conditions limits the application of cell transplantation as a therapeutic modality. We investigated a potential method of increasing the adhesion ability of MSCs to improve their efficacy in the ischemic heart. Treatment of MSCs with PKC activator, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), increased cell adhesion and spreading in a dose-dependent method and significantly decreased detachment. When MSCs were treated with PKC inhibitor, that is, rottlerin, adhesion of MSCs was slightly diminished, and detachment was also decreased compared to the treatment with PMA. MSCs treated with both PMA and rottlerin behaved similarly to normal controls. In 3D matrix cardiogel, treatment with PMA increased the number of MSCs compared to the control group and MSCs treated with rottlerin. Expressions of focal adhesion kinase, cytoskeleton-associated proteins, and integrin subunits were clearly demonstrated in PMA-treated MSCs by immunoblotting and/or immunocytochemistry. The effect of PKC activator treatment on MSCs was validated in vivo. Following injection into rat hearts, the PMA-treated MSCs exhibited significantly higher retention in infarcted myocardium compared to the MSC group. Infarct size, fibrosis area, and apoptotic cells were reduced, and cardiac function was improved in rat hearts injected with PMA-treated MSCs compared to sham and/or MSC-implanted group. These results indicate that PKC activator is a potential target for niche manipulation to enhance adhesion of MSCs for cardiac regeneration.

This paper analyzes ship area network(SAN) with integrated gateway. For the analysis, this paper analyzes reference network architecture, end-to-end connection model, traffic model, and requirement of SAN. Also, the type of network element and minimum performance of integrated gateway is derived by ship area network simulator. The performance evaluation results show that a integrated gateway operating as network switch with performance over than 30,000 packets/sec can provides end-to-end connection with satisfaction of requirement of each end-to-end connection.

Salivary gland tumors, the second most common neoplasm of the mouth after squamous cell carcinoma, account for a significant proportion of tumors of the oral and perioral regions. An unusual case of adenoma presented as a solitary intraoral palatine mass in a 32-year-old woman is reported here. The tumor was interpreted as an unusual pleomorphic adenoma because of the presence of exuberant squamous metaplasia, clinically mimicking squamous cell carcinoma. Moreover, the presence of cystic structures filled with keratinized material was also salient feature. Pleomorphic adenomas may occasionally display focal squamous metaplastic changes; when extensive, it presents the potential for misinterpretation of the histology as indicative of well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma.

With recent advancement in technologies used at home, smart home environment allows various resources such as device, network, or content to be connected to one another. Their configurations are changed by dynamic bindings at any time. In this smart home environment, a minor problem in a resource can trigger serious failures in home network services by causing multiple faults to the related resources simultaneously. To solve this problem, it is essential to analyze the dependency between resources and also to diagnose home network faults autonomously. This paper proposes the effective fault diagnosis system based on resource relation map which is dynamically constructed by information convergence model of heterogeneous home resources. The proposed system provides the tracing method for finding the root cause of a fault using the resource relation map. The resource relation map represents the snapshot of home situations at the given time. The proposed fault diagnosis method allows building cost effective remote maintenance system with high availability and manageability by tracing the fault cause along the dependency between resources using graph-style resource relation map as if humans trace the cause of problem. In addition, it can contribute to realize an autonomic fault management system for smart home. In this paper, the prototype of the proposed system is implemented and evaluated for performance in accuracy and latency of fault diagnosis in a real environment. The experimental results show that the proposed system, especially with the suggested back tracing diagnosis system, yields remarkable performance for home network fault diagnosis.

Recently, photo-alignment technology has been the focus of research efforts because lowering the pre-tilt angle is essential for complete elimination of the off-axis light leakage. However, even though photo-alignment can provide zero pre-tilt angle, it has not yet been widely applied in mass production because of its weak surface anchoring, high curing energy, and strong image sticking. In this paper, we demonstrate that the zero pre-tilt angle can be obtained by employing the field-induced UV-alignment method. We have shown electro-optical characteristics and parameters related to the image quality of a fringe-field switching cell fabricated using the proposed method as functions of the monomer concentration and the UV irradiation time.

This paper proposes a design technique of a survivable ship backbone network, which describes a near optimal configuration scheme of physical and logical topologies of which the survivable ship backbone network consists. We first analyze and present an efficient architecture of a survivable ship backbone network consisting of redundant links and ship devices with dual communication interfaces. Then, we present an integer linear programming-based configuration scheme of a physical topology with regard to the proposed ship backbone network architecture. Finally, we present a metaheuristic-based configuration scheme of a logical topology, underlying the physical topology.

Myocardial ischemia is the major cause of morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular diseases. This disease is a severe stress condition that causes extensive biochemical changes which trigger cardiac cell death. Stress conditions such as deprivation of glucose and oxygen activate the endoplasmic reticulum in the cytoplasm of cells, including cardiomyocytes, to generate and propagate apoptotic signals in response to these conditions. microRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small non-coding RNAs that mediate posttranscriptional gene silencing. The miRNAs play important roles in regulating cardiac physiological and pathological events such as hypertrophy, apoptosis, and heart failure. However, the roles of miRNAs in reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated injury on cardiomyocytes are uncertain. In this study, we identified at the apoptotic concentration of H2O2, miR-26a expression was increased. To determine the potential roles of miR-26a in H2O2-mediated cardiac apoptosis, miR-26a expression was regulated by a miR-26a or an anti-miR-26a. Overexpression of miR-26a increased apoptosis as determined by upregulation of Annexin V/PI positive cell population, caspase-3 activity and expression of pro-apoptotic signal molecules, whereas inhibition of miR-26a reduced apoptosis. We identified GSK3B as a direct downstream target of miR-26a. Furthermore, miR-26a attenuated viability and increased caspase-3 activity in normal cardiomyocytes. This study demonstrates that miR-26a promotes ROS-induced apoptosis in cardiomyocytes. Thus, miR-26a affects ROS-mediated gene regulation and cellular injury response.

Chondrogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is critical for successful cartilage regeneration. Several methods have been developed to attempt to chondrogenic differentiation, because chondrogenic differentiated cells can form stable cartilage and induce expression of a cartilage-specific phenotype. In this study, we found that both H-89 and microRNA-23b induced differentiation into chondrocyte of hMSCs through down-regulation of protein kinase A (PKA) signaling. The small molecule, H-89, was identified by PCA analysis as a potential mediator of chondrogenic differentiation. H-89 induced the expression of the chondrocyte marker, aggrecan, as well as miR-23b. We searched that miR-23b regulates protein level of PKA. When miR-23b was transfected into hMSCs, chondrogenic differentiation was induced. We confirmed the target of miR-23b using a reporter gene assay. Furthermore, not only H-89 or miR-23b-treated cells, but also cell co-treated with H-89 and miR-23b differentiated into chondrocytes. Our results indicate that H-89 induces the expression of endogenous miR-23b, thereby inducing chondrogenic differentiation by negatively inhibition of PKA signaling.

In this paper, we investigate an integrated architecture to support interoperability among heterogeneous middle wares on home networks. We propose and implement a general middleware bridge to support device interoperability on different middle wares for efficient home networks. The IWFEngine(inter working function engine) architecture provides an interface for identifying and utilizing services among devices using simple rules in other to support interoperability among heterogeneous middle wares. Through the registered rules, a local middleware message and a standard message are changed into each other. Unlike existing integrated middleware architectures, the IWFEngine architecture improves efficiency, and convenient adaptor development is possible through simple rules and by using local middleware messages. By this configuration, a conversion rule for exchanging messages between devices on various middle wares is described which does not require modification of the corresponding middleware, and operations can be performed in accordance with the existing corresponding middleware mechanism. Finally, the overhead incurred by a centralized and integrated middleware architecture can be reduced by distributing adaptors into multiple devices.

This paper introduces a smart sleep care system based on IoT bed sensors and IoT LED. Quality sleep is influenced by sleep duration as well as bio-rhythm based sleep pattern. IoT bed sensor acquires body pressure on the bed and the sensor detects user's pose and biosignal patterns; respiration and pulse. IoT LED controls brightness and light temperature to induce sleep (dimming without blue) and wake up (brightening with blue). To improve quality of sleep, this system induces sleep time using LED control to support sufficient sleep duration and analyzes sleep pattern from the biosignal to wake up refreshed.

This paper describes crowd-sourcing home energy efficiency measurement system that includes ways for logging, analyzing, mining, measuring and recommending energy usage activity at home. These activities are based on HVAC devices (air-conditioner, boiler, and temperature sensors. Our system can help to build more valuable applications for management, resource optimization and upgrading user experience. In energy efficiency analyzing, heterogeneous environments make it to be difficult to accurately analyze and predict energy use in mild climates than in more severe climate. Individual sensing and measuring can cause inaccurate data and each home's analysis does not make a respectable result. In this paper, we can achieve crowd-sourcing home data gathering and manipulating data analysis for energy efficiency at home.

As an isotropic conductive adhesive, that is, a hybrid Cu paste composed of Cu powder, solder powder, and a fluxing resin system, has been quantitatively characterized. The mechanism of an electrical connection based on a novel concept of electrical conduction is experimentally characterized using an analysis of a differential scanning calorimeter and scanning electron microscope energydispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The oxide on the metal surface is sufficiently removed with an increase in temperature, and intermetallic compounds between the Cu and melted solder are simultaneously generated, leading to an electrical connection. The reliability of the hybrid Cu paste is experimentally identified and compared with existing Ag paste. As an example of a practical application, the hybrid Cu paste is used for LED packaging, and its electrical and thermal performances are compared with the commercialized Ag paste. In the present research, it is proved that, except the optical function, the electrical and thermal performances are similar to pre-existing Ag paste. The hybrid Cu paste could be used as an isotropic conductive adhesive due to its low production cost.

A smart home usually has a variety of devices or home appliance, instead of designing software for a specific home, this paper proposes a service-oriented framework with a set of ontology systems to support service and device publishing, discovery of devices and their services, composition of control software using existing control services that wrap devices, deployment, and execution of the composed service in an computing environment, monitoring the execution, and recovery from device failure. The ontology systems specify semantic information about devices, services, and workflows used in various smart home, and users can compose and recompose services for their specific needs. New devices, workflows, and services can be added into ontology. Most of the steps in this process can be automated including code generation. For example, service composition will be carried out in three steps: abstract workflow design, function construction, and device discovery, and different codes can be generated for different computing platforms such as Java and Open Services Gateway initiative environments. In this way, a variety of smart home can be constructed rapidly using the framework by discovery and composition using existing services and workflows. This paper illustrates this framework using a media control example to illustrate the ontology, discovery, composition, deployment, execution, monitoring, and recovery.

With the advent of smart home devices including Smart TV or smart appliances, home becomes smarter. Smart home is a complex environment where heterogeneous smart devices and appliances are connected to each other to provide various smart services. As the home environments become smarter and more complex, the need for an effective managing mechanism with minimum user's intervention is growing. However, just only putting together all the individual information of each resource is not enough, since it is very hard to catch out overall home situation without the relation information between the managed resources. In this paper, we propose a resource-aware management system with hierarchical smart home resource model, using the home context information which defines the information convergence model of heterogeneous home resources and builds a home knowledge by constructing a resource relation graph. The proposed system can accelerate deployment of advanced future smart home service features such as context-aware dynamic service composition, autonomous fault management systems. In addition, it allows cost effective remote maintenance system with highly convenient manageability. We implemented the prototype system of our proposed architecture and evaluated the performance on the query response time of home resources and relations in a real environment. Results showed that it has acceptable performance for navigating or control of home information and excellent improvements in terms of relation based search. We anticipate that the proposed system will bring the huge benefits not only to the consumers, home network service providers but also to the home network maintenance companies in terms of ease of management, and diagnostic effectiveness.

Cervicogenic vertigo was known as Bow hunter's syndrome. Occlusion of vertebral artery causes vertebrobasilar insufficiency and we reported cervicogenic vertigo case which was treated by simple decompression of transverse foramen of C1. The patient was 48 years old female who had left side dominant vertebral artery and vertigo was provoked when she rotated her head to right side. Angiography showed complete obliteration of blood flow of left vertebral artery when her head was rotated to right side. The operation was decompression of left vertebral artery at C1 level. Posterior wall of transverse foramen was resected and vertebral artery was exposed and decompressed. After surgery, vertigo of the patient was disappeared, and angiography showed patent left vertebral artery when her head was rotated to right side. Vertigo caused by compression of cervical vertebral artery could be treated by decompression without fusion or instrumentation, especially in C1 transverse foramen.

The rapid growth of IT technology has enabled ship automation systems to gain better functionality and safety with reducedcosts and crew numbers. Nowadays, the remote maintenance services for the systems are required because a ship may belocated in a very remote area. To provide the remote maintenance services, some issues such as how to collect the ship automation systems data, how to monitor a ship's data from onshore offices, how to get support from experts while sailing,and how to reduce the maintenance costs, should be addressed. In this paper, we propose a remote ship maintenance system for remote monitoring and diagnostics of ship automation systems, which is based on both a ship area network to integrate separate system networks and a ship-shore communication infrastructure to support a remote access using satellitecommunications. Background: Although a number of association studies of gastric cancer (GC) risk have been conducted worldwide, their results have been inconsistent among different populations. The association between GC incidence and Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori ) infection is somewhat of an enigma that has yet to be clearly explained. Geographically-restricted positive selection due to unique environmental pressures often result in large allele frequency differences between populations. Thus, population differences need to be investigated when attempting to identify genes that contribute to phenotypes that differ greatly between populations. Methods: We analyzed population differences in 18 polymorphisms of 12 GC-associated or immune response-related genes from 3 ethnic groups comprising 50 Koreans, 46 Indians, and 60 Caucasians; these groups differed in H. pylori seropositivity and susceptibility to GC. Results: An interleukin 10 ( IL10 ) polymorphism demonstrated a significantly different genotype distribution ( F ST = 0.306, P = 0.014), indicating a large difference between the Korean and Caucasian populations. The odds ratio of IL10 polymorphism allele between the populations was 38.32 (95% confidence interval, 11.49–127.83). Conclusion: This finding, taken together with previous evidence, provides a possible explanation for previous discrepant association results and supports the idea that IL10 gene polymorphisms can differentially affect GC development among populations.

In the shipbuilding industry, due to the global trends where the number of IT (Information Technology) devices of a smart ship have been increased rapidly, the need to develop a new shipboard backbone network has recently emerged for integrating and managing the IT devices of a smart ship efficiently. A shipboard backbone network requires high survivability because it is constructed in automatic and unmanned smart ships where a failure of the backbone network can cause critical problems. The purpose of this paper thus is to study SAN (Ship Area Network) as a efficient shipboard backbone network, considering particularity of shipboard environment and requirement of high survivability. In order to do so, we designed a dual network topology that all network nodes, including the IT devices installed in a smart ship, are connected each other through dual paths, and reuding tht IT devices pnstalles supporices network survivability as well as t Iffic efficiency for the dual network topology. In general, the flow of detailed data through the physical sensing of the mechanical system and the analysis of the production process is important as well as the development of the CPS(cyber-physical system) system in smartizing the production plant. In this study, stream is composed of three main fields in order to make fabric factory as smart factory. The three streams are divided into a knitting process, a dyeing process, and a sewing process. It can be made into a system that can monitor and manage the fabric production process as an integrated system by connecting the three separated streams. Physical sensors are developed and applied to the textile machines used in the three streams, and software programs for collecting and delivering data was performed together to construct a system for data collection per stream.

In mobile ad hoc networks, an application scenario requires mostly collaborative mobility behavior. The key problem of those applications is scalability with regard to the number of multicast members as well as the number of the multicast group. To enhance scalability with group mobility, we have proposed a multicast protocol based on a new framework for hierarchical multicasting that is suitable for the group mobility model in MANET. The key design goal of this protocol is to solve the problem of reflecting the node`s mobility in the overlay multicast tree, the efficient data delivery within the sub-group with group mobility support, and the scalability problem for the large multicast group size. The results obtained through simulations show that our approach supports scalability and efficient data transmission utilizing the characteristic of group mobility.

It has been suggested that the haplotypic relationship between microsatellite markers and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) is of considerable importance, as microsatellite markers can potentially be incorporated into haplotypes containing SNPs to increase marker density across a region of interest. However, SNPs and microsatellite markers have different mutation rates and durations, and it is conceivable that the linkage disequilibrium (LD) patterns between the genetic markers may considerably differ. We assessed the LD patterns using 1,661 SNPs and 65 microsatellite markers along chromosome 22 and investigated whether common patterns of LD between the two genetic markers are deduced from the results. The results demonstrated that the patterns of LD among microsatellite markers varied considerably and the LD runs of SNPs and microsatellite markers showed distinct patterns. Microsatellite markers have a much higher mutation rate and the evolution of microsatellite markers is a more complex process which has distinct mutation properties from those of SNPs. We consider that these might contribute to the different LD patterns between the two genetic markers. Therefore, it would seem inadvisable to make assumptions about persistence of LD across even a relatively small genetic distance among microsatellite markers and to construct mixed marker haplotypes/LD maps employing microsatellite markers.

Various home network middleware such as HAVi, LnCP, LonWorks, and UPnP have been designed. They coexist because one middleware cannot support diverse requests of services and devices. This circumstance creates an interoperability problem among devices based on various types of home network middleware. The Universal Middleware Bridge system is designed and implemented to solve this interoperability problem using a device conversion mechanism and a message translation mechanism among the middleware. These conversion mechanisms make it possible for devices to distinguish and control other devices connected to different middleware networks in the Universal Middleware Bridge system. These mechanisms also easily support new device and middleware by adding some XML files.

Objectives The purpose of this study was to compare lymph node (LN) staging using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with contrast-enhancement (CE) PET/CT and contrast-enhanced neck CT (neck CT) in patients with thyroid cancer with level-by-level comparison with various factors. Methods This was a retrospective multicenter study. A total of 85 patients were enrolled. Patients who underwent a preoperative evaluation by CE PET/CT and neck CT for thyroid cancer were enrolled. The gold standard for LN was the combination of surgical pathology and clinical follow-up. We compared CE PET/CT with neck CT using a level-by-level method. Factors, including age, sex, camera, arm position, tumor size, extra-thyroidal extension, tumor location, number of primary tumors, primary tumor maximum standardized uptake value, and the interval from scan to operation were also analyzed. Results Overall accuracy was 81.2% for CE PET/CT and 68.2% for neck CT. CE PET/CT was more sensitive than neck CT (65.8% vs. 44.7%). Also, CE PET/CT showed higher negative predictive value (77.2% vs. 66.1%). CE PET/CT showed good agreement with the gold standard (weighted kappa [κ], 0.7) for differentiating N0, N1a, and N1b, whereas neck CT showed moderate agreement (weighted κ, 0.5). CE PET/CT showed better agreement for the number of levels involved with the gold standard (weighted κ, 0.7) than that of neck CT with the gold standard (weighted κ, 0.5). The accuracies for differentiating N0, N1a, and N1b were 81.2% for CE PET/CT and 68.2% for neck CT. Level-by-level analysis showed that CE PET/CT was more sensitive and has higher negative predictive value for detecting ipsilateral level IV and level VI LNs than neck CT. Other analyzed factors were not related to accuracies of both modalities. Conclusion CE PET/CT was more sensitive and reliable than neck CT for preoperative LN staging in patients with thyroid cancer.

Introduction Despite the success of interventional processes such as drug-eluting stents, complete prevention of restenosis is still hindered by impaired or delayed endothelialization or both. Here, we report that 1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione-based small molecule-generated mesenchymal stem cell-derived functional endothelial cells (MDFECs) facilitated rapid transmural coverage of injured blood vessels. Methods Small molecules that induced CD31 expression were screened by principal component analysis (PCA). Rat mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were treated with selected small molecules for up to 16 days, and the expression levels of CD90 and CD31 were examined by immunocytochemistry. In vitro functional assays of MDFECs, including tube formation assays and nitric oxide production assays, were performed. After MDFECs (intravenous, 3×106 cells per animal) were injected into balloon-injured rats, neointima formation was monitored for up to 21 days. The endothelial coverage of denuded blood vessels was evaluated by Evans Blue staining. The functionality of repaired blood vessels was evaluated by measuring vasorelaxation and hemodynamic changes. Additionally, derivatives of the selected small molecules were examined for their ability to induce endothelial markers. Results PCA indicated that 3-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-(1-methyl-1H-indol-3-yl)-1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione effectively induced MDFECs. MDFECs inhibited the neointima formation of denuded blood vessels by facilitating more rapid endothelialization. Further examination indicated that derivatives with a 1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione moiety are important for initiating the endothelial cell differentiation of MSCs. Conclusions Small molecules with 1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione as a core structure have great potential to improve the efficacy of MSC-based cell therapy for vascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis and restenosis.

IntroductionMesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have therapeutic potential for the repair of myocardial injury. The efficacy of MSC therapy for myocardial regeneration mainly depends on the survival of cells after transplantation into the infarcted heart. In the transplanted regions, reactive oxygen species (ROS) can cause cell death, and this process depends on caspase activation and autophagosome formation.MethodsA Software TargetScan was utilized to search for microRNAs (miRNAs) that target caspase-3 mRNA. Six candidate miRNAs including let-7b were selected and transfected into human MSCsin vitro. Expression of MEK-EKR signal pathways and autophagy-related genes were detected. Using ischemia/reperfusion model (I/R), the effect of MSCs enriched with let-7b was determined after transplantation into infarcted heart area. Miller catheter was used to evaluate cardiac function.ResultsHere, we report that let-7b targets caspase-3 to regulate apoptosis and autophagy in MSCs exposed to ROS. Let-7b-transfected MSCs (let-7b-MSCs) showed high expression of survival-related proteins, including p-MEK, p-ERK and Bcl-2, leading to a decrease in Annexin V/PI- and TUNEL-positive cells under ROS-rich conditions. Moreover, autophagy-related genes, including Atg5, Atg7, Atg12 and beclin-1, were significantly downregulated in let-7b-MSCs. Using a rat model of acute myocardial infarction, we found that intramyocardial injection of let-7b-MSCs markedly enhanced left ventricular (LV) function and microvessel density, in accordance with a reduced infarct size and the expression of caspase-3.ConclusionsTaken together, these data indicate that let-7b may protect MSCs implanted into infarcted myocardium from apoptosis and autophagy by directly targeting caspase-3 signaling.

Nowadays, much research in recent years has focused on IoT (Internet of Things). The home domain is the most important research area of IoT, because there expected accounts of home smart device for over 40 percent of connected device excepting mobile phone. Furthermore, enormous data is generated by home smart device. There is growing concern, but the previous works didn't address enough to manage and analyze home data. The purpose of this study is to describe and examine to manage the aggregated home IoT data based on SWO (Smart home Web of Objects), and SWO analytics platform. We shows the implementation of SWO analytics platform and a case study using real data from smart metering devices for analysis of appliance usage patterns.

Background Despite recent advances in the investigation of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), the impact of genetic heterogeneity on its molecular pathogenesis has not been fully elucidated. Thus, in this study, we aim to characterize the genetic complexity in Korean patients with polycythemia vera (PV) and essential thrombocythemia (ET). Methods We conducted association studies using 84 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 229 patients (96 with PV and 133 with ET) and 170 controls. Further, whole-genome sequencing was performed in six patients (two with JAK2 V617F and four with wild-type JAK2), and putative somatic mutations were validated in a further 69 ET patients. Clinical and laboratory characteristics were also analyzed. Results Several germline SNPs and the 46 haplotype were significantly associated with PV and ET. Three somatic mutations in MPDZ, IQCH, and CALR genes were selected and validated. The frequency of the CALR mutation was 58.0% (40/69) in ET patients, who did not carry JAK2/MPL mutations. Moreover, compared with JAK2 V617F-positive patients, those with CALR mutations showed lower hemoglobin and hematocrit levels (P = 0.004 and P = 0.002, respectively), higher platelet counts (P =0.008), and a lower frequency of cytoreductive therapy (P = 0.014). Conclusion This study was the first comprehensive investigation of the genetic characteristics of Korean patients with PV and ET. We found that somatic mutations and the 46 haplotype contribute to PV and ET pathogenesis in Korean patients.

BACKGROUND: Low survival rate of transplanted cells compromises the efficacy of cell therapy. Hexokinase II (HKII) is known to have anti-apoptotic activity through its interaction with mitochondria. The objective was to identify miRNAs targeting HKII and investigate whether miRNA-mediated modulation of HKII could improve the survival of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) exposed to H2O2. The expression of HKII in MSCs exposed to H2O2 was evaluated, and HKII-targeting miRNA was screened based on miRNA-target prediction databases. The effect of H2O2 on the expression of the selected HKII-targeting miRNA was examined and the effect of modulation of the selected HKII-targeting miRNA using anti-miRNA on H2O2-induced apoptosis of MSC was evaluated. RESULTS: H2O2 (600 μΜ) induced cell death of MSCs and decreased mitochondrial HKII expression. We have identified miR-181a as a HKII-targeting miRNA and H2O2 increased the expression of miR-181a in MSCs. Delivery of anti-miR-181a, which neutralizes endogenous miR-181a, significantly attenuated H2O2-induced decrease of HKII expression and disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential, improving the survival of MSCs exposed to H2O2. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that H2O2-induced up-regulation of miR-181a contributes to the cell death of MSCs by down-regulating HKII. Neutralizing miR-181a can be an effective way to prime MSCs for transplantation into ischemic tissues.

We propose an alignment method for the near-zero pretilt angle of liquid crystals (LCs) using polyimide films doped with a UV-curable polymer. The near-zero pretilt angle can be obtained by UV curing of reactive mesogen monomers mixed with planar alignment material while a vertical electric field is applied to an LC cell assembled after the rubbing process. We demonstrated that the pretilt angle can be decreased from 2.390 degrees to 0.082 degrees by employing the proposed method. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Many osteopenic disorders, including a postmenopausal osteoporosis and lytic bone metastasis in breast and prostate cancers, are linked with a hyperosteoclast activity due to increased receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) expression in osteoblastic/stromal cells. Therefore, inhibition of RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis and osteoclast-induced bone resorption is an important approach in controlling pathophysiology of these skeletal diseases. We found that, of seven type I, II, and III saikosaponins isolated fromBupleurum falcatum, saikosaponins A and D, type I saikosaponins with an allyl oxide linkage between position 13 and 28 and two carbohydrate chains that are directly attached to the hydroxyl groups in position 3, exhibited the most potent inhibition on RANKL-induced osteoclast formation at noncytotoxic concentrations. The stereochemistry of the hydroxyl group at C16 did not affect their activity. Saikosaponins A and D inhibited the formation of resorptive pits by reducing the secreted levels of matrix metalloproteinase- (MMP-) 2, MMP-9, and cathepsin K in RANKL-induced osteoclasts. Additionally, saikosaponins A and D inhibited mRNA expression of parathyroid hormone-related protein as well as cell viability and invasion in metastatic human breast cancer cells. Thus, saikosaponins A and D can serve as a beneficial agent for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and cancer-induced bone loss.

Recently, low-frequency driving of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels to minimize power consumption has drawn much attention. In the case in which an LCD panel is driven by a fringe-field at a low frequency, the image flickering phenomenon occurs when the sign of the applied electric field is reversed. We investigated image flickering induced by the flexoelectric effect in a fringe-field switching (FFS) liquid crystal cell in terms of the transmittance difference between frames and the ripple phenomenon. Experimental results show that image flicker due to transmittance difference can be eliminated completely and that the ripple phenomena can be reduced significantly by applying a bipolar voltage wave to the FFS cell.
