Flexible pressure sensors play an important role in flexible robotics, human-machine interaction (HMI), and human physiological information. However, most of the reported flexible pressure sensors suffer from a highly nonlinear response and a significant decrease in sensitivity at high pressures. Herein, we propose a flexible novel iontronic pressure sensor based on monolayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). Based on the unique structure and the excellent mechanical properties as well as the large intercalation capacitance of MoS2, the prepared sensor holds an ultra-high sensitivity (Smax = 89.75 kPa−1) and a wide sensing range (722.2 kPa). Further, the response time and relaxation time of the flexible sensor are only 3 ms, respectively, indicating that the device can respond to external pressure rapidly. In addition, it shows long-term cycling stability (over 5000 cycles with almost no degradation) at a high pressure of 138.9 kPa. Finally, it is demonstrated that the sensor can be used in physiological information monitoring and flexible robotics. It is anticipated that our prepared sensor provide a reliable approach to advance the theory and practicality of the flexible sensor electronics.

Abstract Background Sepsis is one of the common death factors in intensive care unit, which refers to the systemic inflammatory response syndrome caused by infection. It has many complications such as acute renal injury, shock, multiple organ dysfunction, and failure. The mortality of acute renal injury is the highest among the complications, which is a serious threat to the safety of patients and affects the quality of life. This study aimed to observe the changes in autophagy-related protein expressions in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) after continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and their impacts on prognosis. Methods 207 AKI patients visiting the Emergency Department of The First People’s Hospital of Xuzhou from January 2014 to February 2018 were recruited and treated with CRRT. Quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was applied to detect the expression of autophagy-related genes, including light chain 3 type II (LC3-II), autophagy-related 5 (Atg-5) and Beclin-1, in the monocytes of the patient’s peripheral blood before and after treatment. The levels of inflammatory mediators interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 were determined via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay before and after treatment. The patient’s serum creatinine (Scr) level before and after treatment was measured using a full-automatic biochemistry analyser. Moreover, the treatment effect was graded after CRRT, and the relationship between the prognosis of patients and the autophagy-related proteins was observed. Results The Scr levels in the patients were significantly decreased after treatment with CRRT. Before treatment, the IL-1β and IL-6 blood levels were high in the patients, while the amounts were significantly reduced after CRTT. The expressions of LC3-II, Atg-5 and Beclin-1 in the monocytes of patients after treatment were significantly decreased compared with those before treatment. Compared with those in survived patients, the expression of autophagy-related proteins was significantly elevated in in patients died after one to three weeks after the treatment. IL-1β, IL-6, LC3-II and Beclin-1, but not Atg-5 values were significantly correlated with Scr. Conclusion The expression of LC3-II, Atg-5 and Beclin-1 in the monocytes of patients may change prominently after treatment with CRRT, so they are expected to be regarded as new prognostic indicators for AKI patients.

The control strategy of virtual synchronous generator (VSG) is an effective and efficient technique to provide frequency supporting for distributed generations. However, the effect of damping is often neglected in a large number of control strategies about VSG. The damping is often used to reduce the active power oscillation, and it relates to the steady-state performance of the system in island micro-grids. This paper analyses the influence of the parameters of damping and inertia on the system in island micro-girds. Furthermore, a hybrid control method of the inertia and the damping is proposed to optimize the frequency curve of the system and enhance the stability of the system. By deploying this method, the decay rate of frequency under load disturbance becomes slower, and the recovery rate of frequency becomes faster after disturbance. Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed method improves the dynamic and static performance of the system in island micro-grids.

ABSTRACT: As an important part of an epidermic system, terrestrial deposits can provide a good record of major geological events in the Cretaceous epidemic system. This article is a review of the geological background, paleogeography, paleoclimate, basin evolution and sedimentary characteristics in China through the Cretaceous period, in order to provide a comprehensive understanding for interested researchers. During the Berriasian-Hauterivian age, red-mainly fluvial and shallow lacustrine deposition developed under arid and semi-arid climates in westen China when eastern China had been occupied by the “East Plateau”. During the Barremian-Albian, age coal-bearing depositions occurred to the north of the Yanshan Mountain under the wet and warm climate. However, mainly red fluvial and shallow lacustrine depositions prevailed in most of the south to the Yanshan Mountain except basins where seawater could enter and caused mostly green depositions. During the Cenomanian-Santonian age, high land uplift took place in northwestern China. Mainly red deposition with developed alluvial plains occupied southwestern China and South China when the Songliao Basin was filled by black deep lacustrine mud shale caused by transgression. Mainly red deposition under an arid and semi-arid climate occupied all basins in China during the Campanian-Maastrichtian age.

Abstract Background Radioresistance is a major factor leading to the failure of radiotherapy and poor prognosis in tumor patients. Following the application of radiotherapy, the activity of various metabolic pathways considerably changes, which may result in the development of resistance to radiation. Main body Here, we discussed the relationships between radioresistance and mitochondrial and glucose metabolic pathways, aiming to elucidate the interplay between the tumor cell metabolism and radiotherapy resistance. In this review, we additionally summarized the potential therapeutic targets in the metabolic pathways. Short conclusion The aim of this review was to provide a theoretical basis and relevant references, which may lead to the improvement of the sensitivity of radiotherapy and prolong the survival of cancer patients.

Abstract Mechanical metamaterials such as microlattices are an emerging kind of new materials that utilize the combination of structural enhancement effect by geometrical modification and the intrinsic properties of its material constituents. Prior studies have reported the mechanical properties of ceramic or metal-coated composite lattices. However, the scalable synthesis and characterization of high-entropy alloy (HEA) as thin film coating for such cellular materials have not been studied previously. In this work, stereolithography was combined with Radio Frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering to conformally deposit a thin layer (~800 nm) of CrMnFeCoNi HEA film onto a polymer template to produce HEA-coated three-dimensional (3D) core-shell microlattice structures for the first time. The presented polymer/HEA hybrid microlattice exhibits high specific compressive strength (~0.018 MPa kg−1 m3) at a density well below 1000 kg m−3, significantly enhanced stiffness (>5 times), and superior elastic recoverability compared to its polymer counterpart due to its composite nature. The findings imply that this highly scalable and effective route to synthesizing HEA-coated microlattices have the potential to produce novel metamaterials with desirable properties to cater specialized engineering applications.

Anthocyanins are important pigments in peach fruit and are beneficial to human health. Sugars are both energy-storing and signaling molecules and their roles in inducing anthocyanin biosynthesis have received a great deal of research attention. However, the mechanism by which sugars induce anthocyanin biosynthesis in peach fruit is unknown. In order to understand this induction mechanism, comprehensive transcriptome and metabolome were performed in fruit flesh treated with four different sugars for 12 and 24 h, respectively. Here, we found that cyanidin-3-O-(6-O-p-coumaroyl) glucosides accumulated in fruit flesh treated with glucose, sucrose, sorbitol, and fructose in vitro. Two key structural genes of the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway, namely, PpDFR and PpUFGT, were upregulated in the flesh of sugar-treated peach fruit. By contrast, the two main transcription factors (TFs) PpMYB10.1 and PpBL regulating anthocyanin biosynthetic genes in peach fruit were not upregulated accordingly. Interestingly, two MYB family genes (PpMYB6 and PpMYB44-like) and three bHLH family genes (PpbHLH35, PpbHLH51, and PpbHLH36-like) were upregulated. A dual luciferase assay revealed that PpMYB6 strongly activated the PpUFGT promoter when it was co-infiltrated with PpbHLH35, PpbHLH51, and PpbHLH36-like. When PpMYB44-like was co-infiltrated with PpbHLH35, it also potently activated the PpUFGT promoter. The results of this study help clarify the molecular mechanisms by which glucose, sucrose, sorbitol, and fructose regulate anthocyanin accumulation in peach fruit.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is an interstitial pneumonia characterized by chronic progressive fibrosis, ultimately leading to respiratory failure and early mortality. Although not fully explored, the major causative factors in IPF pathogenesis are dysregulated fibroblast proliferation and excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) deposited by myofibroblasts differentiated from pulmonary fibroblasts. More signalling pathways, including the PI3K-Akt-mTOR and autophagy pathways, are involved in IPF pathogenesis. Niclosamide ethanolamine salt (NEN) is a highly effective multitarget small-molecule inhibitor reported in antitumor studies. Here, we reported that in an IPF animal model treated with NEN for 14 days, attractive relief of pulmonary function and hydroxyproline content were observed. To further explore, the therapeutic effect of NEN in IPF and pathological changes in bleomycin-challenged mouse lung sections were assessed. Additionally, the effects of NEN on abnormal proliferation and ECM production in IPF cell models established with TGF-β1-stimulated A549 cells or DHLF-IPF cells were studied. In nonclinical studies, NEN ameliorated lung function and histopathological changes in bleomycin-challenged mice, and the lung hydroxyproline content was significantly diminished with NEN treatment. In vitro, NEN inhibited PI3K-mTORC1 signalling and arrested the cell cycle to prevent uncontrolled fibroblast proliferation. Additionally, NEN inhibited TGF-β1-induced epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) and ECM accumulation via the mTORC1-4EBP1 axis. Furthermore, NEN-activated noncanonical autophagy resensitized fibroblasts to apoptosis. The above findings demonstrated the potential antifibrotic effect of NEN mediated via modulation of the PI3K-mTORC1 and autophagy pathways. These data provide strong evidence for a therapeutic role for NEN in IPF.

An anode bimetallic catalyst comprising Ni-Pd alloy nanoparticles was loaded on acid-treatedmulti-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) for application in a direct urea fuel cell. The bimetallic catalyst and MWCNTs were synthesized by a hydrothermal method at 160°C for 5 h. To reduce the catalyst particle size, alkaline resistance, and facilitate their uniform distribution on the surface of the MWCNTs, phosphorus (P) was added to the Ni-Pd/MWCNT catalyst. The effects of P on the distribution and reduction in size of catalyst particles were investigated by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The enhanced catalytic activity and durability of the P-containing catalyst was confirmed by the high current density [1897.76 mA/cm² (vs. Ag/AgCl)] obtained at 0.45 V in a 3M KOH/1.0M urea alkaline aqueous solution compared with that of the catalyst without P [604.87 mA/cm² (vs. Ag/AgCl)], as determined by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. A Urea-O2 fuel cell assembled with a membrane electrode assembly comprising the Ni-Pd(P)/MWCNT catalyst delivered peak power densities of 0.756 and 3.825 mW/cm² at 25 and 60°C, respectively, in a 3M KOH/1M urea solution. Background: Bitter gourd (BG) fruit powder was previously showed to prevent high-fat diet (HFD)-induced metabolic disorders in mice. In current study, we investigated the beneficial difference of the water soluble (S-BG) and insoluble fractions (IS-BG) of bitter gourd. Results: Compared to normal chow diet, the HFD induced greater body weight gain and increased fat mass accompanied by impaired insulin sensitivity, elevated serum lipids and inflammation. Supplementation of BG, S-BG, and IS-BG showed similar beneficial effects and restored the metabolic changes in mice. Interestingly, BG showed no effect on fat mass, which was decreased by both S-BG and IS-BG. Additionally, S-BG and IS-BG inhibited the SREBP-1/FAS pathway, thereby decreasing liver cholesterol accumulation, while only BG showed improvement on mitochondrial activity. Conclusion: These results further support the position that bitter gourd has multiple active ingredients and that both fractions have beneficial effects on metabolic disorders.

Inflammation is a complex biological defense system associated with a series of chronic diseases such as cancer, arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. The extracts of pomegranate fruit and peel have been reported to possess health-beneficial properties in inflammation-associated chronic diseases. Punicalagin is considered to be the major active component of pomegranate extracts. In this review we have focused on recent studies into the therapeutic effects of punicalagin on inflammation-associated chronic diseases and the regulatory roles in NF-κB, MAPK, IL-6/JAK/STAT3 and PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathways. We have concluded that punicalagin may be a promising therapeutic compound in preventing and treating inflammation-associated chronic diseases, although further clinical studies are required.

Facilitated by microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology, MEMS speakers or microspeakers have been rapidly developed during the past decade to meet the requirements of the flourishing audio market. With advantages of a small footprint, low cost, and easy assembly, MEMS speakers are drawing extensive attention for potential applications in hearing instruments, portable electronics, and the Internet of Things (IoT). MEMS speakers based on different transduction mechanisms, including piezoelectric, electrodynamic, electrostatic, and thermoacoustic actuation, have been developed and significant progresses have been made in commercialization in the last few years. In this article, the principle and modeling of each MEMS speaker type is briefly introduced first. Then, the development of MEMS speakers is reviewed with key specifications of state-of-the-art MEMS speakers summarized. The advantages and challenges of all four types of MEMS speakers are compared and discussed. New approaches to improve sound pressure levels (SPLs) of MEMS speakers are also proposed. Finally, the remaining challenges and outlook of MEMS speakers are given.

Abstract Background Radiotherapy has been used increasingly to treat primary hepatocellular carcinoma. Clinically, the main cause of radiotherapy failure is cellular radioresistance, conferred via glycolytic metabolism. Our previous study demonstrated that Girdin is upregulated in primary hepatocellular carcinoma and promotes the invasion and metastasis of tumor cells. However, whether Girdin underlies the radio-sensitivity of hepatocellular carcinoma remains unclear. Methods A short hairpin RNA (shRNA) was used to silence CCDC88A (encoding Girdin), and real-time PCR was performed to determine CCDC88A mRNA expression. Then, cell proliferation, colony formation, flow cytometric, scratch, and transwell assays were to examine the influence of Girdin silencing on cellular radiosensitivity. Glycolysis assays were conducted to exam cell glycolysis process. Western blotting was performed to explore the signaling pathway downstream of Girdin. Finally, animal experiments were performed to demonstrate the effect of CCDC88A silencing on the radiosensitivity of hepatoma in vivo. Results shRNA-induced Girdin silencing suppressed glycolysis and enhanced the radio-sensitivity of hepatic cell lines, HepG2 and Huh-7. Furthermore, silencing of Girdin inhibited the PI3K/AKT/HIF-1α signaling pathway, which is a central regulator of glycolysis. Conclusion Girdin can regulate glycolysis in hepatocellular carcinoma cells through the PI3K/AKT/HIF-1α signaling pathway, which decreases the sensitivity of tumor cells to radiotherapy.

Increasing evidence demonstrates that hyperlipidemia plays a causal role in the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) due to endothelial dysfunction. Houttuynia cordata aqueous extract (HAE), using as both medicine and food, whose effect and mechanism were investigated in endothelial dysfunction. In vivo, it profoundly attenuated hyperlipidemia-induced accumulation of serum metabolites, which in turn contributed to alleviating morphologic and functional damage in vascular endothelium. Moreover, the decrease expression of FoxO1/PGC-1α and mitochondrial complexes in thoracic vessels were ameliorated by HAE administration. Through in vitro cultures, consistently, the results showed that HAE predominantly activated PGC-1α for mitochondrial biogenesis via enhancing FoxO1 expression. Additionally, silencing of FoxO1 remarkably abolished the ability of HAE to augment PGC-1α expression, implying the imperative role of FoxO1 during protection. Besides, the anti-inflammation was mainly mediated via p38 MAPK pathway. Briefly, our study demonstrated that HAE ameliorated hyperlipidemia-induced endothelial injury via upregulating FoxO1/PGC-1α and suppressing p38 MAPK.

City growth and its resulted environmental issues are promoting a citywide application of sustainable steel structures. However, designers and constructors often hold conflicting perspectives on the sustainable construction of steel structures, which has been identified as a barrier to achieve sustainability in this area. Given that the existing sustainability indicator systems of steel structures are either design-oriented or construction-driven, this study aims to develop a new one by synthesizing both designers’ and contractors’ opinions in the development of such indicators. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to identify potential indicators. A questionnaire survey was then used to collect the viewpoints of designers and constructors on the identified indicators. Finally, a fuzzy set algorithm and hierarchical clustering were employed to detect the indicators’ relationships. The results present a three-dimensional indicator system composed of social-technical sustainability, greenness, and economic sustainability. Furthermore, it is found that designers and constructors have discrepant opinions on social-technical sustainability and greenness, while their views on economic sustainability are similar. The research findings provide managerial hints to the attainment of sustainable steel structures and enhance stakeholders’ understanding of design-and-construction integration in steel structure projects.

Magnetic photonic crystal slab with nanovoids buried in Ni films were fabricated using nanosphere lithography combined with electrochemical deposition. One featured structure was dominated the spectra of polar surface magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) of samples with different voids depth. For the shallow ones, surface lattice resonance (SLR) was revealed through angle resolved spectra analysis, where the location of degeneracy points corresponded to that of the featured structure in MOKE signal. For the deeper ones, localized plasmons and degeneracy points were all demonstrated in angle resolved reflection spectra, where localized plasmons dominated the resonant MOKE signal, and the degeneracy points blue-shifted compared with that of shallow ones. Changing the lattice of samples, similar phenomena were presented. The physical mechanism of SLR could be attributed to the diffraction of surface plasmons by the reciprocity vector, and the localized plasmons were attributed to the Mie scattering. The featured structure in polar MOKE spectra demonstrated high sensitivity, which might pave the way to on-chip MO devices.

Peach is both an economically important crop species and a model for Rosaceae fruit development research. Here, the authors perform genome-wide association analysis in peach and find candidate genes associated with variation in agronomically important fruit phenotypes.

Winter chill is essential for the growth and development of deciduous species. To understand the relationship between accumulated chilling hours during endodormancy and blooming and fruit shape development, we controlled chilling hours and investigated their effects on blooming date and fruit shape of peaches. The results showed that the number of days to full bloom date and the heat requirement for blooming were negatively correlated with accumulated chilling hours. Accumulated chilling hours were significantly negatively correlated with fruit shape index and fruit tip lengths, suggesting that the number of chilling hours affect the fruit shape development. Fewer accumulated chilling hours may be the major reason for longer fruit shape and protruding fruit tips. In conclusion, our results indicate specifically that decreased winter chilling hours can delay the bloom date and may lead to aberrant fruit shape development in peaches. Our study provides preliminary insights into the response of temperate fruit species to global climate change.
