Tin oxide is considered to be one of the most promising semiconductor oxide materials for use as a gas sensor. However, a simple route for the controllable build-up of nanostructured, sufficiently pure and hierarchical SnO2 structures for gas sensor applications is still a challenge. In the current work, an aqueous SnO2 nanoparticulate precursor sol, which is free of organic contaminants and sorbed ions and is fully stable over time, was prepared in a highly reproducible manner from an alkoxide Sn(OR)4 just by mixing it with a large excess of pure neutral water. The precursor is formed as a separate liquid phase. The structure and purity of the precursor is revealed using XRD, SAXS, EXAFS, HRTEM imaging, FTIR, and XRF analysis. An unconventional approach for the estimation of the particle size based on the quantification of the Sn-Sn contacts in the structure was developed using EXAFS spectroscopy and verified using HRTEM. To construct sensors with a hierarchical 3D structure, we employed an unusual emulsification technique not involving any additives or surfactants, using simply the extraction of the liquid phase, water, with the help of dry butanol under ambient conditions. The originally generated crystalline but yet highly reactive nanoparticles form relatively uniform spheres through self-assembly and solidify instantly. The spheres floating in butanol were left to deposit on the surface of quartz plates bearing sputtered gold electrodes, producing ready-for-use gas sensors in the form of ca. 50 μm thick sphere-based-films. The films were dried for 24 h and calcined at 300 °C in air before use. The gas sensitivity of the structures was tested in the temperature range of 150-400 °C. The materials showed a very quickly emerging and reversible (20-30 times) increase in electrical conductivity as a response to exposure to air containing 100 ppm of H2 or CO and short (10 s) recovery times when the gas flow was stopped.

In 2009, influenza A H1N1 caused the first pandemic of the 21st century. Although a vaccine against this influenza subtype was offered before or at the onset of the second epidemic wave that caused most of the fatal cases in Europe, vaccination rates for that season were lower than expected. We propose that the contradiction between high risk of infection and low use of available prevention measures represents a pandemic public health paradox. This research aims for a better understanding of this paradox by exploring the time-dependent interplay among changing influenza epidemiology, media attention, pandemic control measures, risk perception and public health behavior among five European countries (Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Spain and the UK). Findings suggest that asynchronicity between media curves and epidemiological curves may potentially explain the pandemic public health paradox; media attention for influenza A H1N1 in Europe declined long before the epidemic reached its peak, and public risk perceptions and behaviors may have followed media logic, rather than epidemiological logic.

The purpose of this study was to improve two common tests used for antioxidant capacity measurements, i.e. the reducing power and chelating ability measurements, for appropriate comparisons between the molecules tested and chosen references, as the usual methods are often performed in a qualitative way rather than a quantitative way. After revision, it was then possible to determine an AERC indice (Ascorbate Equivalent Reducing Capacity) and a CECC (Carnosine Equivalent Chelating Capacity) or EECC (EDTA Equivalent Chelating Capacity) indice according to the standard chosen, by analogy to the TEAC indice (Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity) already used in many reported works to determine the free radical scavenging activity. Thus, the determination of these relative indices enables the comparison of antioxidative capacities obtained in various studies. Plasma enhanced physical vapor depositions are extensively used to fabricate substrates for cell culture applications. One peculiarity of the plasma processes is the possibility to deposit thin films with reproducible chemical and physical properties. In the present work, a combinatorial plasma polymerization process was used to deposit thin carbon based films to promote cell adhesion, in the interest of testing cell proliferation as a function of the substrate chemical properties. Peculiarity of the combinatorial approach is the possibility to produce in just one deposition experiment, a set of surfaces of varying chemical moieties by changing the precursor composition. A full characterization of the chemical, physical and thermodynamic properties was performed for each set of the synthesized surfaces. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to measure the concentration of carboxyl, hydroxyl and amine functional groups on the substrate surfaces. A perfect linear trend between polar groups' density and precursors' concentration was found. Further analyses reveled that also contact angles and the correspondent surface energies of all deposited thin films are linearly dependent on the precursor concentration. To test the influence of the surface composition on the cell adhesion and proliferation, two cancer cell lines were utilized. The cell viability was assessed after 24 h and 48 h of cell culture. Experiments show that we are able to control the cell adhesion and proliferation by properly changing the thin film deposition conditions i.e. the concentration and the kind of chemical moiety on the substrate surface. The results also highlight that physical and chemical factors of biomaterial surface, including surface hydrophobicity and free energy, chemical composition, and topography, can altered cell attachment., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Background: Disaccharides are, in general, the first choice as formulation compounds when freeze-drying microorganisms. Although polysaccharides and other biopolymers are considered too large to stabilise and interact with cell components in the same beneficial way as disaccharides, polymers have been reported to support cell survival. In the present study we compare the efficiency of sucrose and the polymers Ficoll, hydroxyethylcellulose, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose and polyvinylalcohol to support the survival of three bacterial strains during freeze drying. The initial osmotic conditions were adjusted to be similar for all formulations. Formulation characterisation was used to interpret the impact that different compound properties had on cell survival., Results: Despite differences in molecular size, both sucrose and the sucrose-based polymer Ficoll supported cell survival after freeze drying equally well. All formulations became amorphous upon dehydration. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction data showed that the discerned differences in structure of the dry formulations had little impact on the survival rates. The capability of the polymers to support cell survival correlated with the surface activity of the polymers in a similar way for all investigated bacterial strains., Conclusion: Polymer-based formulations can support cell survival as effectively as disaccharides if formulation properties of importance for maintaining cell viability are identified and controlled., (Copyright © 2011 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Recent developments in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have produced tabletop instruments capable of reasonable imaging resolution at less cost compared to conventional equipment. Combining the SEM with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) allows the possibility of elemental analysis through detection of X-rays emitted from interaction between individual particles and the SEM electron beam, revealing their atomic composition. It's well known that exposure to inhalable particulate matter (PM) poses health risks and routine monitoring of the chemical content of these has been realized. Exposure information is of a general character but by combining the chemical build-up of monitored particles and knowledge of their inherent health effects will allow better risk assessment. An analysis technique using a tabletop SEM with EDS is demonstrated on particles collected onto nucleopore filters from urban, industrial and rural areas. The therapeutical acquisitions of the year 2004 are: 1. The sequential treatment of the Helicobacter pylori infection reaches an eradication rate of 95%. 2. The use of COX-2 inhibitors reduced significantly the gastrointestinal side effects of anti-inflammatory treatments. Since cardiac averse effects of certain COX-2 inhibitors had been reported, the treatments with COX-2 inhibitors came widely into question. In the case of patients with risk of NSAID induced gastrointestinal toxicity, the alternative is to return to a treatment with non specific NSAID associated to an prophylactic PPI treatment.

The tetrameric hydrolysis products of zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV), the zirconyl(IV) and hafnyl(IV) ions, [M(4)(OH)(8)(OH(2))(16)(8+)], often labelled MO(2+).5H(2)O, are in principle the only zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV) species present in aqueous solution without stabilising ligands and pH larger than zero. These complexes are furthermore kinetically very stable and do not become protonated even after refluxing in concentrated acid for at least a week. The structures of these complexes have been determined in both solid state and aqueous solution by means of crystallography, EXAFS and large angle X-ray scattering (LAXS). Each metal ion in the [M(4)(OH)(8)(OH(2))(16)](8+) complex binds four hydroxide ions in double hydroxo bridges, and four water molecules terminally. The M-O bond distance to the hydroxide ions are markedly shorter, ca. 0.12 A, than to the water molecules. The hydrated zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV) ions only exist in extremely acidic aqueous solution due to their very strong tendency to hydrolyse. The structure of the hydrated zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV) ions has been determined in concentrated aqueous perchloric acid by means of EXAFS, with both ions being eight-coordinated, most probably in square antiprismatic fashion, with mean Zr-O and Hf-O bond distances of 2.187(3) and 2.160(12) A, respectively. The dimethyl sulfoxide solvated zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV) ions are square antiprismatic in both solid state and solution, with mean Zr-O and Hf-O bond distances of 2.193(1) and 2.181(6) A, respectively, in the solid state. Hafnium(IV) chloride does not dissociate in N,N'-dimethylpropyleneurea, dmpu, a solvent with good solvating properties but with a somewhat lower permittivity (epsilon= 36.1) than dimethyl sulfoxide (epsilon= 46.4), and an octahedral HfCl(4)(dmpu)(2) complex is formed.

Objective: Medicinal iatrogenics are responsible for hospital admissions but also occur in hospitals. In view of the lack of knowledge, prevalence and nature of the adverse drug-related events (ADE) in the Bichat-Claude Bernard hospital group in Paris, and because of the potential severity of the latter, the Local drug committee has decided to develop a policy to manage these risks., Method: The first stage consisted in a transversal study on a given day in the departments in which patients are hospitalised for more than 24 hours, in order to assess the prevalence, severity and preventability of ADE and to search for factors of risk., Results: 107 ADE were observed in 89 patients on the day of the survey (9.9% global prevalence of ADE [CI 95%: 8.8% - 11.0%]). Among the latter, 57 patients had exhibited at least one adverse event during their hospitalisation, i.e., a prevalence of 6.3% ([CI 95%: 4.7% - 7.9%] ). Two thirds of these patients were hospitalised in medical departments. These nosocomial ADE (nosocomial adverse drug events) were serious or severe in 73% of cases and 25% could have been avoided. The only clearly identified risk factor was the number of drugs prescribed., Conclusion: This review has drawn the attention of the medical and paramedical community to the need to define vigilance markers, and has provided some elements of response that should be further completed by a prospective cohort study.

Porous nickel and cobalt oxides were prepared using their alkoxides as inorganic precursors. The stabilization of the mesostructure is especially critical for divalent elements such as Ni and Co, which do not form any network structure, like silicates. The lack of a network-forming multivalent bond is the probable reason why no stable mesoporous oxides have been synthesized for divalent elements yet. Here we have reported our attempt to synthesize porous oxides of Ni and Co. Octadecylamine has been used as the organic structure-directing agent. The product obtained was put under solvent extraction and calcination at various temperatures to remove the surfactant, followed by characterization using XRD, TEM and BET measurements. The FT/IR and thermal analyses (TGA and DSC) were also carried out for supporting information, such as extent of removal of surfactant from the pores of the metal oxide. A relatively better surface area has been obtained for the Co oxide, but in Ni the surface area found is not as good. A possible reason for that has been discussed. The porous (solvent extracted) cobalt oxide has been used as a catalyst in the oxidation reaction of cyclohexane in mild conditions. The catalyst has shown relatively better conversion of cyclohexane into cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol than the nanostructured cobalt oxide catalyst of regular structure.

The structure and vibrational spectra of the dimethyl sulfoxide solvated thallium(III) ion have been studied in a dimethyl sulfoxide solution and in the solid state. X-ray crystallography shows a trigonal unit cell, space group R(-)3 (No. 148), for the [Tl(dmso)(6)](ClO(4))(3) compound with Z = 3, a = b = 11.9764(13) [11.8995(9)] A, c = 20.802(2) [20.467(2)] A, and V = 2584.0(5) [2509.9(4)] A(3) at 295 [150] K. The crystal structure comprises a highly symmetric hexakis(dimethyl sulfoxide)thallium(III) ion, with thallium in a (-)3 symmetry site and a Tl-O bond distance of 2.224(3) A at 295 K. The octahedral TlO(6) kernel is compressed along the threefold axis with an O-Tl-O bond angle of 96.20(11) degrees. The Tl-O-S bond angle of 120.7(2) degrees corresponds to a Tl.S distance of 3.292(2) A. One perchlorate ion centered on the (-)3 axis was described by a statistically disordered model. A low-temperature EXAFS study (10 K) resulted in the Tl-O and Tl.S distances of 2.221(4) and 3.282(6) A, respectively, consistent with a Tl-O-S bond angle of 120(1) degrees. The low Debye-Waller factors confirm a regular coordination without the disorder of the dimethyl sulfoxide ligands, which would have resulted from the alternative choice of space group R3 for the crystal structure. Raman and infrared spectra have been recorded and assigned, with the bands at 435 and 447 cm(-)(1) corresponding to the vibrational frequency of the symmetric and asymmetric Tl-O stretching modes, respectively. EXAFS data of a 0.5 mol dm(-3)thallium(III) trifluoromethanesulfonate in a dimethyl sulfoxide solution were consistent with that of a hexasolvated ion with mean Tl-O and Tl.S distances of 2.22(1) and 3.33(2) A, respectively, which correspond to a mean Tl-O-S bond angle of 124(2) degrees. The anomalously large disorder parameter for the Tl-O distances is consistent with a weak pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect. The (205)Tl, (13)C, and (1)H NMR spectra of the complex in solution show single signals at 1886, 39.5, and 2.3 ppm, respectively.

The anodic oxidation of molybdenum metal in MeOH at both low anodic and cathodic current density (0.025 A/cm2) and electrolyte temperatures kept below 20 degrees C provides an efficient approach to Mo(OMe)6 (I). W(OMe)6 (II) can be obtained from the electrolytes, prepared via anodic dissolution of tungsten, by fractional crystallization. The symmetrically independent units in the structures of I and II, being isomorphous, follow the C1 (slightly distorted D2d) symmetry. Theoretical calculations performed for a free molecule of I indicate that this low symmetry may be the result of the packing of the molecules in the crystal structure and also an inherent property imposed by the bonding in this compound. Crystal data for I: Mo(OMe)6 at 22 degrees C, a = 7.0976(13), b = 6.6103(12), and c = 12.286(2) A, beta = 90.068(3) degrees, V = 576.41(18) A3, monoclinic P2/n, Z = 2. Crystal data for II: W(OMe)6 at 22 degrees C, a = 7.1164(19), b = 6.6414(18), and c = 12.304(3) A, beta = 90.047(5) degrees, V = 581.5(3) A3, monoclinic P2/n, Z = 2.

Between the lower and the upper inflection point of a quasistatic pressure-volume (PV) curve, a segment usually appears in which the PV relationship is steep and linear (i.e., compliance is high, with maximal volume change per pressure change, and is constant). Traditionally it is assumed that when positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and tidal volume (V T) are titrated such that the end-inspiratory volume is positioned at this linear segment of the PV curve, compliance is constant over VT during ongoing ventilation. The validity of this assumption was addressed in this study. In 14 surfactant-deficient piglets, PEEP was increased from 3 cm H(2)O to 24 cm H(2)O, and the compliance associated with 10 consecutive volume increments up to full VT was determined with a modified multiple-occlusion method at the different PEEP levels. With PEEP at approximately the lower inflection point, compliance was minimal in most lungs and decreased markedly over VT, indicating overdistension. Compliance both increased and decreased within the same breath at intermediate PEEP levels. It is concluded that a PEEP that results in constant compliance over the full VT range is difficult to find, and cannot be derived from conventional respiratory-mechanical analyses; nor does this PEEP level coincide with maximal gas exchange.

For analysis of respiratory system mechanics the very complex structure of the respiratory system is strongly simplified to a simple resistance-compliance-model. While for most patients this simplification seems sufficient, in patients with pulmonary disease this model is inappropriate. Additionally, to regional inhomogeneity throughout the lung, large volume accelerations due to the strongly decreased respiratory system compliance together with a mass increase of the patients' lungs, i.e. an increased respiratory system inertance Irs, result in a significant inertive pressure contribution. The aim of this study was to develop a physical inertance model, and its description by conventional methods of respiratory monitoring. Its parameters are adjustable within the physiological range, with Irs between 0.06 and 0.2 mbar.s2.l-1. The model proved well with static and dynamic analysis of respiratory system parameters. Using our physical model it is possible to evaluate new methods of respiratory monitoring and to investigate experimentally the interrelationship of respiratory system parameters.

The interrupter technique is used to determine airway and tissue resistance. Their accuracy is influenced by the technical properties of the interrupter device and the compliance of the respiratory system. We investigated the influence of valve characteristics and respiratory system compliance on the accuracy of determining airway and tissue resistance by means of a computer simulation. With decreasing compliance we found increasing errors in both airway and tissue resistance determination of up to 34 and 71%, respectively. On this basis we developed a new occlusion valve, with special emphasis on rapid closing time and tightness in the closed state to improve the accuracy of resistance determination. The newly developed occlusion device greatly improves the accuracy of airway and tissue resistance determination. We conclude that respiratory system compliance is a limiting factor for the accuracy of the interrupter technique. To apply the interrupter technique in patients with extremely low respiratory system compliances, we need sophisticated technical devices.

Mechanical ventilation is an important, often life-saving component of modern intensive care medicine. However, it may further aggravate pulmonary pathology by endinspiratory overdistension of the alveoli or by their endexpiratory collapse. To prevent both the ventilator may be adjusted based on the slope of the pressure-volume curve, named as compliance, which is often determined by a stepwise inflation of the lungs. This maneuver gained no widespread clinical acceptance because of being cumbersome and invasive. Therefore, we developed a modification of the well known interrupter technique - the Traveling Shutter Wave. A wave of short-term (300 ms) occlusions "travels" over the tidal volume range. Differential compliance is calculated by division of volume and pressure differences between two adjacent occlusion maneuvers. The technique is well suited for the clinical setting because the ventilatory pattern does not need to be changed. This manuscript describes the realization of the Traveling Shutter Wave as well as its application in two patients.

The effect of acute and chronic ethanol consumption on serum alpha-fetoprotein was studied in adult male rats with resting and regenerating livers. Unlike many hepatotoxins, ethanol consumed over both the long and short term suppressed serum alpha-fetoprotein concentrations (p less than 0.05). This suppression was not due to increased degradation, since the half-life of alpha-fetoprotein was not significantly altered by chronic ethanol treatment. However, liver cytosolic alpha-fetoprotein was markedly increased after ethanol consumption, suggesting the presence of impaired secretion or mobilization from the liver cells. During liver regeneration following partial hepatectomy, alpha-fetoprotein increased in both the control (390 ng-hr/ml) and ethanol-treated animals (288 ng-hr/ml). At no time did the ethanol animal values equal the control levels. The change in serum alpha-fetoprotein showed an inverse exponential correlation with the amount of liver removed at hepatectomy and a positive correlation with the amount of nuclear DNA present at sacrifice. However, in the ethanol-treated animals it required the removal of 1.9 times as much liver to stimulate the same degree of liver regeneration as in the controls (p less than 0.001). A significant inverse correlation was observed between 3H-thymidine uptake and the areas under the alpha-fetoprotein time curves in the controls (p less than 0.001). In the ethanol groups the correlation was not statistically significant (p less than 0.2). It is concluded that although changes in serum alpha-fetoprotein may be associated with liver injury and regeneration, they are not a direct result of the regenerative process. The direct correlation with available nuclear DNA indicates the need for existing cells to hypertrophy and produce the alpha-fetoprotein. The depression associated with acute and chronic ethanol ingestion appears to reflect a direct effect of ethanol on protein synthesis and/or release.
