Search

The piezoelectric response is a measure of the sensitivity of a material's polarization to stress or its strain to an applied field. Using in-operando x-ray Bragg coherent diffraction imaging, we observe that topological vortices are the source of a five-fold enhancement of the piezoelectric response near the vortex core. The vortices form where several low symmetry ferroelectric phases and phase boundaries coalesce. Unlike bulk ferroelectric solid solutions in which a large piezoelectric response is associated with coexisting phases in the proximity of the triple point, the largest responses for pure BaTiO3 at the nanoscale are in spatial regions of extremely small spontaneous polarization at vortex cores. The response decays inversely with polarization away from the vortex, analogous to the behavior in bulk ceramics as the cation compositions are varied away from the triple point. We use first-principles-based molecular dynamics to augment our observations, and our results suggest that nanoscale piezoelectric materials with large piezoelectric response can be designed within a parameter space governed by vortex cores. In the field of quantum information science and technology, the representation and visualization of quantum states and related processes are essential for both research and education. In this context, a focus especially lies on ensembles of few qubits. There exist many powerful representations for single-qubit and multi-qubit systems, such as the famous Bloch sphere and generalizations. Here, we utilize the dimensional circle notation as a representation of such ensembles, adapting the so-called circle notation of qubits and the idea of representing the n-particle system in an n-dimensional space. We show that the mathematical conditions for separability lead to symmetry conditions of the quantum state visualized, offering a new perspective on entanglement in few-qubit systems and therefore on various quantum algorithms. In this way, dimensional notations promise significant potential for conveying nontrivial quantum entanglement properties and processes in few-qubit systems to a broader audience, and could enhance understanding of these concepts as a bridge between intuitive quantum insight and formal mathematical descriptions., Comment: 22 pages, 20 figures

The presence of minor bodies in exoplanetary systems is in most cases inferred through infra-red excesses, with the exception of exocomets. Even if over 35 years have passed since the first detection of exocomets around beta Pic, only ~ 25 systems are known to show evidence of evaporating bodies, and most of them have only been observed in spectroscopy. With the appearance of new high-precision photometric missions designed to search for exoplanets, such as CHEOPS, a new opportunity to detect exocomets is available. Combining data from CHEOPS and TESS we investigate the lightcurve of 5 Vul, an A-type star with detected variability in spectroscopy, to search for non periodic transits that could indicate the presence of dusty cometary tails in the system. While we did not find any evidence of minor bodies, the high precision of the data, along with the combination with previous spectroscopic results and models, allows for an estimation of the sizes and spatial distribution of the exocomets., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

A variety of physical platforms are investigated for quantum control of many particles, and techniques are extended to access multiple dimensions. Here, we present our experimental study of shuttling single Mg$^+$ ions within a scalable trap-array architecture that contains up to thirteen trapping sites in a three-dimensional arrangement. We shuttle ions from a dedicated loading hub to multiple sites with a success rate of larger than $0.99999$. In a prototype application, we demonstrate the preservation of the coherence of superposition states of a hyperfine qubit during inter-site shuttling. Context. Giant planets play a major role in multiple planetary systems. Knowing their demographics is important to test their overall impact on planetary systems formation. It is also important to test their formation processes. Recently, three radial velocity surveys have established radial distributions of giant planets. All show a steep increase up to 1-3 au, and two suggest a decrease beyond. Aims. We aim at understanding the limitations associated with the characterization of long-period giant radial velocity planets, and to estimate their impact on the radial distribution of these planets. Methods. We revisit the results obtained by two major surveys that derived such radial distributions, using the RV data available at the time of the surveys as well as, whenever possible, new data. Results. We show that the radial distributions published beyond (5-8 au) are not secure. The fixed-point logic LREC= was developed by Grohe et al. (CSL 2011) in the quest for a logic to capture all problems decidable in logarithmic space. It extends FO+C, first-order logic with counting, by an operator that formalises a limited form of recursion. We show that for every LREC=-definable property on relational structures, there is a constant k such that the k-variable fragment of first-order logic with counting quantifiers expresses the property via formulae of logarithmic quantifier depth. This yields that any pair of graphs separable by the property can be distinguished with the k-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm in a logarithmic number of iterations. In particular, it implies that a constant dimension of the algorithm identifies every interval graph and every chordal claw-free graph in logarithmically many iterations, since every such graph admits LREC=-definable canonisation.

We first present a consistent canonical formulation of the general (non-marginal) Oppenheimer-Snyder model. The switching between comoving and stationary observer is achieved by promoting coordinate transformations between dust proper time and Schwarzschild-Killing time to canonical ones. This leads to a multivalued Hamiltonian which is deparameterizable. We then discuss the quantization of comoving and stationary observers by employing the method of Affine Coherent State Quantization (ACSQ). We thereby demonstrate that under certain conditions the quantum corrected trajectories can replace the classical singularity by a bounce. We then show that both comoving and stationary observers see this bouncing collapse behavior. Context: The search for extrasolar planets around the nearest M dwarfs is a crucial step towards identifying the nearest Earth-like planets. One of the main challenges in this search is that M dwarfs can be magnetically active and stellar activity can produce radial velocity (RV) signals that could mimic those of a planet. Aims: We aim to investigate whether the 2.2 day period observed in optical RVs of the nearby active M dwarf star Gl 388 (AD Leo) is due to stellar activity or to a planet that corotates with the star as suggested in the past. Methods: We obtained quasi-simultaneous optical RVs of Gl 388 from 2019 to 2021 with SOPHIE (R~75k) at the OHP in France, and near-IR RV and Stokes V measurements with SPIRou at the CFHT (R~70k). Results: The SOPHIE RV time series displays a periodic signal with a 2.23+-0.01 day period and 23.6+-0.5 m/s amplitude, which is consistent with previous HARPS observations obtained in 2005-2006. The SPIRou RV time series is flat at 5 m/s rms and displays no periodic signals. RV signals of amplitude higher than 5.3 m/s at a period of 2.23 days can be excluded with a confidence level higher than 99%. Using the modulation of the longitudinal magnetic field (Bl) measured with SPIRou, we derive a stellar rotation period of 2.2305+-0.0016 days. Conclusions: SPIRou RV measurements provide solid evidence that the periodic variability of the optical RVs of Gl 388 is due to stellar activity rather than to a corotating planet. The magnetic activity nature of the optical RV signal is further confirmed by the modulation of Bl with the same period. The SPIRou campaign on Gl 388 demonstrates the power of near-IR RV to confirm or infirm planet candidates discovered in the optical around active stars. We report the discovery of TOI-4127 b, a transiting, Jupiter-sized exoplanet on a long-period ($P = 56.39879^{+0.00010}_{-0.00010}$ d), high-eccentricity orbit around a late F-type dwarf star. This warm Jupiter was first detected and identified as a promising candidate from a search for single-transit signals in TESS Sector 20 data, and later characterized as a planet following two subsequent transits (TESS Sectors 26 and 53) and follow-up ground-based RV observations with the NEID and SOPHIE spectrographs. We jointly fit the transit and RV data to constrain the physical ($R_p = 1.096^{+0.039}_{-0.032} R_J$, $M_p = 2.30^{+0.11}_{-0.11} M_J$) and orbital parameters of the exoplanet. Given its high orbital eccentricity ($e=0.7471^{+0.0078}_{-0.0086}$), TOI-4127 b is a compelling candidate for studies of warm Jupiter populations and of hot Jupiter formation pathways. We show that the present periastron separation of TOI-4127 b is too large for high-eccentricity tidal migration to circularize its orbit, and that TOI-4127 b is unlikely to be a hot Jupiter progenitor unless it is undergoing angular momentum exchange with an undetected outer companion. Although we find no evidence for an external companion, the available observational data are insufficient to rule out the presence of a perturber that can excite eccentricity oscillations and facilitate tidal migration.

Myocardial infarction and heart failure are major cardiovascular diseases that affect millions of people in the US. The morbidity and mortality are highest among patients who develop cardiogenic shock. Early recognition of cardiogenic shock is critical. Prompt implementation of treatment measures can prevent the deleterious spiral of ischemia, low blood pressure, and reduced cardiac output due to cardiogenic shock. However, early identification of cardiogenic shock has been challenging due to human providers' inability to process the enormous amount of data in the cardiac intensive care unit (ICU) and lack of an effective risk stratification tool. We developed a deep learning-based risk stratification tool, called CShock, for patients admitted into the cardiac ICU with acute decompensated heart failure and/or myocardial infarction to predict onset of cardiogenic shock. To develop and validate CShock, we annotated cardiac ICU datasets with physician adjudicated outcomes. CShock achieved an area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.820, which substantially outperformed CardShock (AUROC 0.519), a well-established risk score for cardiogenic shock prognosis. CShock was externally validated in an independent patient cohort and achieved an AUROC of 0.800, demonstrating its generalizability in other cardiac ICUs.

Distributed ledger technologies, also known as blockchains for enterprises, promise to significantly reduce the high cost of automating multi-party business workflows. We argue that a programming language for writing such on-ledger logic should satisfy three desiderata: (1) Provide concepts to capture the legal rules that govern real-world business workflows. (2) Include simple means for specifying policies for access and authorization. (3) Support the composition of simple workflows into complex ones, even when the simple workflows have already been deployed. We present the open-source smart contract language Daml based on Haskell with strict evaluation. Daml achieves these desiderata by offering novel primitives for representing, accessing, and modifying data on the ledger, which are mimicking the primitives of today's legal systems. Robust access and authorization policies are specified as part of these primitives, and Daml's built-in authorization rules enable delegation, which is key for workflow composability. These properties make Daml well-suited for orchestrating business workflows across multiple, otherwise heterogeneous parties. Daml contracts run (1) on centralized ledgers backed by a database, (2) on distributed deployments with Byzantine fault tolerant consensus, and (3) on top of conventional blockchains, as a second layer via an atomic commit protocol.

This paper introduces a novel approach to video object detection detection and tracking on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). By incorporating metadata, the proposed approach creates a memory map of object locations in actual world coordinates, providing a more robust and interpretable representation of object locations in both, image space and the real world. We use this representation to boost confidences, resulting in improved performance for several temporal computer vision tasks, such as video object detection, short and long-term single and multi-object tracking, and video anomaly detection. These findings confirm the benefits of metadata in enhancing the capabilities of UAVs in the field of temporal computer vision and pave the way for further advancements in this area.

It is generally assumed that the search for a consistent and testable theory of quantum gravity is among the most important open problems of fundamental physics. I review the motivations for this search, the main problems on the way, and the status of present approaches and their physical relevance. We present a quantum inspired image augmentation protocol which is applicable to classical images and, in principle, due to its known quantum formulation applicable to quantum systems and quantum machine learning in the future. The augmentation technique relies on the phenomenon Anderson localization. As we will illustrate by numerical examples the technique changes classical wave properties by interference effects resulting from scatterings at impurities in the material. We explain that the augmentation can be understood as multiplicative noise, which counter-intuitively averages out, by sampling over disorder realizations. Furthermore, we show how the augmentation can be implemented in arrays of disordered waveguides with direct implications for an efficient optical image transfer.

Finite-size effects are challenging in molecular dynamics simulations because they have significant effects on computed static and dynamic properties, in particular diffusion constants, friction coefficients and time- or frequency-dependent response functions. We investigate the influence of periodic boundary conditions on the velocity autocorrelation function and the frequency-dependent friction of a particle in a fluid and show that the long-time behavior (starting at the picosecond timescale) is significantly affected. We develop an analytical correction allowing to subtract the periodic boundary condition effects. By this we unmask the power-law long-time tails of the memory kernel and the velocity autocorrelation function in liquid water and a Lennard-Jones fluid from rather small simulation boxes., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 9 pages of Appendices

Nucleation is considered to be the first step in dust and cloud formation in the atmospheres of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, exoplanets, and brown dwarfs. In these environments dust and cloud particles grow to macroscopic sizes when gas phase species condense onto cloud condensation nuclei (CCNs). Understanding the formation processes of CCNs and dust in AGB stars is important because the species that formed in their outflows enrich the interstellar medium. Although widely used, the validity of chemical and thermal equilibrium conditions is debatable in some of these highly dynamical astrophysical environments. We aim to derive a kinetic nucleation model that includes the effects of thermal non-equilibrium by adopting different temperatures for nucleating species, and to quantify the impact of thermal non-equilibrium on kinetic nucleation. Forward and backward rate coefficients are derived as part of a collisional kinetic nucleation theory ansatz. The endothermic backward rates are derived from the law of mass action in thermal non-equilibrium. We consider elastic collisions as thermal equilibrium drivers. For homogeneous TiO2 nucleation and a gas temperature of 1250 K, we find that differences in the kinetic cluster temperatures as small as 20 K increase the formation of larger TiO2 clusters by over an order of magnitude. An increase in cluster temperature of around 20 K at gas temperatures of 1000 K can reduce the formation of a larger TiO2 cluster by over an order of magnitude. Our results confirm and quantify the prediction of previous thermal non-equilibrium studies. Small thermal non-equilibria can cause a significant change in the synthesis of larger clusters. Therefore, it is important to use kinetic nucleation models that include thermal non-equilibrium to describe the formation of clusters in environments where even small thermal non-equilibria can be present., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We study the quantum-gravitational corrections to the power spectrum of a gauge-invariant inflationary scalar perturbations in a closed model of a universe. We consider canonical quantum gravity as an approach to quantizing gravity. This leads to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, which has been studied by applying a semiclassical Born-Oppenheimer type of approximation. At the corresponding orders of approximation, we recover both the uncorrected and quantum-gravitationally corrected Schroedinger equations for the perturbation modes from which we calculate the quantum-gravitational corrections to the power spectrum in the slow-roll regime. Quantum gas systems provide a unique experimental platform to study a fundamental paradigm of quantum many-body physics: the crossover between Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) molecular pairs and Bardeen Cooper Schrieffer (BCS) superfluidity. Some studies have considered quantum gas samples confined in optical lattices, however, focusing on the case, when only the lowest Bloch band is populated, such that orbital degrees of freedom are excluded. In this work, for the first time, ultracold Feshbach molecules of fermionic $^{40}K$ atoms are selectively prepared in the second Bloch band of an optical square lattice, covering a wide range of interaction strengths including the regime of unitarity. Binding energies and band relaxation dynamics are measured by means of a method resembling mass spectrometry. The longest lifetimes arise for strongly interacting Feshbach molecules at the onset of unitarity with values around 300 ms for the lowest band and 100 ms for the second band. In the case of strong confinement in a deep lattice potential, we observe bound dimers also for negative values of the s-wave scattering length, extending previous findings for molecules in the lowest band. DE Boo is a unique system, with an edge-on view through the debris disk around the star. The disk, which is analogous to the Kuiper belt in the Solar System, was reported to extend from 74 to 84 AU from the central star. The high photometric precision of the Characterising Exoplanet Satellite (CHEOPS) provided an exceptional opportunity to observe small variations in the light curve due to transiting material in the disk. This is a unique chance to investigate processes in the debris disk. Photometric observations of DE Boo of a total of four days were carried out with CHEOPS. Photometric variations due to spots on the stellar surface were subtracted from the light curves by applying a two-spot model and a fourth-order polynomial. The photometric observations were accompanied by spectroscopic measurements with the 1m RCC telescope at Piszk\'estet\H{o} and with the SOPHIE spectrograph in order to refine the astrophysical parameters of DE Boo. We present a detailed analysis of the photometric observation of DE Boo. We report the presence of nonperiodic transient features in the residual light curves with a transit duration of 0.3-0.8 days. We calculated the maximum distance of the material responsible for these variations to be 2.47 AU from the central star, much closer than most of the mass of the debris disk. Furthermore, we report the first observation of flaring events in this system. We interpreted the transient features as the result of scattering in an inner debris disk around DE Boo. Unmanned aerial vehicles assist in maritime search and rescue missions by flying over large search areas to autonomously search for objects or people. Reliably detecting objects of interest requires fast models to employ on embedded hardware. Moreover, with increasing distance to the ground station only part of the video data can be transmitted. In this work, we consider the problem of finding meaningful region of interest proposals in a video stream on an embedded GPU. Current object or anomaly detectors are not suitable due to their slow speed, especially on limited hardware and for large image resolutions. Lastly, objects of interest, such as pieces of wreckage, are often not known a priori. Therefore, we propose an end-to-end future frame prediction model running in real-time on embedded GPUs to generate region proposals. The stellar activity of M dwarfs is the main limitation for discovering and characterizing exoplanets orbiting them since it induces quasi-periodic RV variations. We aim to characterize the magnetic field and stellar activity of the early, moderately active, M dwarf Gl205 in the optical and nIR domains. We obtained high-precision quasi-simultaneous spectra in the optical and nIR with the SOPHIE spectrograph and SPIRou spectropolarimeter between 2019 and 2022. We computed the RVs from both instruments and the SPIRou Stokes V profiles. We used ZDI to map the large-scale magnetic field over the time span of the observations. We studied the temporal behavior of optical and nIR RVs and activity indicators with the Lomb-Scargle periodogram and a quasi-periodic GP regression. In the nIR, we studied the equivalent width of Al I, Ti I, K I, Fe I, and He I. We modeled the activity-induced RV jitter using a multi-dimensional GP regression with activity indicators as ancillary time series. The optical and nIR RVs have similar scatter but nIR shows a more complex temporal evolution. We observe an evolution of the magnetic field topology from a poloidal dipolar field in 2019 to a dominantly toroidal field in 2022. We measured a stellar rotation period of Prot=34.4$\pm$0.5 d in the longitudinal magnetic field. Using ZDI we measure the amount of latitudinal differential rotation (DR) shearing the stellar surface yielding rotation periods of Peq=32.0$\pm$1.8 d at the stellar equator and Ppol=45.5$\pm$0.3 d at the poles. We observed inconsistencies in the activity indicators' periodicities that could be explained by these DR values. The multi-dimensional GP modeling yields an RMS of the RV residuals down to the noise level of 3 m/s for both instruments, using as ancillary time series H$\alpha$ and the BIS in the optical, and the FWHM in the nIR., Comment: 41 pages, 24 figures. Polyregular functions are the class of string-to-string functions definable by pebble transducers, an extension of finite-state automata with outputs and multiple two-way reading heads (pebbles) with a stack discipline. If a polyregular function can be computed with $k$ pebbles, then its output length is bounded by a polynomial of degree $k$ in the input length. But Boja\'nczyk has shown that the converse fails. In this paper, we provide two alternative easier proofs. The first establishes by elementary means that some quadratic polyregular function requires 3 pebbles. The second proof - just as short, albeit less elementary - shows a stronger statement: for every $k$, there exists some polyregular function with quadratic growth whose output language differs from that of any $k$-fold composition of macro tree transducers (and which therefore cannot be computed by a $k$-pebble transducer). HD$\,$172555 is a young ($\sim$20$\,$Myr) A7V star surrounded by a 10$\,$au wide debris disk suspected to be replenished partly by collisions between large planetesimals. Small evaporating transiting bodies, exocomets, have also been detected in this system by spectroscopy. After $\beta\,$Pictoris, this is another example of a system possibly witnessing a phase of heavy bombardment of planetesimals. In such system, small bodies trace dynamical evolution processes. We aim at constraining their dust content by using transit photometry. We performed a 2-day-long photometric monitoring of HD$\,$172555 with the CHEOPS space telescope in order to detect shallow transits of exocomets with a typical expected duration of a few hours. The large oscillations in the lightcurve indicate that HD$\,$172555 is a $\delta\,$Scuti pulsating star. Once removing those dominating oscillations, we find a hint for a transient absorption. If fitted with an exocomet transit model, it corresponds to an evaporating body passing near the star at a distance of $6.8\pm1.4\,$R$_\star$ (or $0.05\pm 0.01\,$au) with a radius of 2.5 km. These properties are comparable to those of the exocomets already found in this system using spectroscopy, as well as those found in the $\beta\,$Pic system. The nuclei of solar system's Jupiter family comets, with radii of 2-6$\,$km, are also comparable in size.
