Skills developed through qualitative research and community partnerships can be essential for developing education students' cultural competency and understandings about diverse student populations. Toward this end, we developed a qualitative "service-research" project in a teacher education course focused on child development, whereby undergraduate students examined the racial, linguistic, religious, and migration experiences of youth in St. Louis, Missouri. This paper provides a snapshot of this work by defining service-research and showcasing one student research team that developed and analyzed three case studies of young women from Bosnian Muslim families in partnership with a local organization. Through an analysis and discussion of service-research and the students' results, we argue for the integration of qualitative research skills, service projects, and community partnerships into educator preparation programs.

This article examines the relationship between language and emotion, especially drawing attention to the experiences and perspectives of second language (SL) learners. Informed by the sociocultural perspective on the construction of emotion and its representation, this study highlights the intertwined relationship among emotions, cultural contexts, perceived identities, and languages. Using a qualitative case study approach, we examined challenges and strategies of emotion speech in one group of second language learners: Korean adult English learners (ELs) in the United States. Analyses of two surveys with seventeen Korean ELs and interviews with four selected participants demonstrate: (1) A full communication of emotions across cultures and languages was challenging because of the lack of shared cultural contexts among speakers. (2) However, the acquisition of one’s second language included learning new cultural maps with which learners developed intercultural capacities to code switch across languages/emotions and, thus, to participate more fully in their second language community. (3) The code switching among SL learners often involved perceived personality change and identity negotiation in different languages since each language was associated with different cultural experiences and emotions/value orientations. Implications for the Second Language Acquisition field will be discussed.

Aims Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a genetic disorder that causes sudden or chronic cardiovascular problems, which can be fatal. Since MFS patients require regular close medical observation, it is important to understand the factors and pathways associated with psychosocial adaptation to the disease. This study aimed to identify the relationships among illness uncertainty, uncertainty appraisal, and psychosocial adaptation in MFS patients using path analysis. Method and results This descriptive cross-sectional survey study was conducted from October 2020 to March 2021, in compliance with STROBE guidelines. Using data from 179 participants aged older than 18 years, we constructed a hypothetical path model to identify determinants of illness uncertainty, uncertainty appraisal, and psychosocial adaptation. In the path analysis, disease severity, illness uncertainty, anxiety, and social support were significant factors influencing MFS patients' psychosocial adaptation. Disease severity and illness uncertainty exerted direct effects, while anxiety and social support exerted both direct and indirect (through illness uncertainty) effects. Finally, anxiety showed the greatest total effect. Conclusion These findings are useful for enhancing MFS patients' psychosocial adaptation. Medical professionals should focus on managing disease severity, decreasing anxiety, and increasing social support. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Asymmetric gait patterns are mostly observed in hemiplegic stroke patients. These abnormal gait patterns resulting in abnormal speed, and decreased ability in daily of activity living. Objective: This study aimed to determine the immediate changes in gait parameters and plantar pressure during elevation by wearing an insole on the sound side lower extremity of patients with hemiplegia. Methods: Thirty-six participants were recruited, comprising those with a post-stroke follow-up of ≥3 months and a functional ambulation category score of ≥2. The participants were asked to walk with and without a 1 cm insole in the shoe of their sound side, and the order of wearing or not wearing the insole was randomized. Gait parameters, bilateral gait parameters, and dynamic plantar pressure were measured using the GAITRite Walkway System. Results: Paired t-test was used to examine immediate changes in gait parameters and plantar pressure with and without insoles during walking in the same group. Overall, gait velocity and step length significantly decreased (p < 0.05), whereas step time significantly increased (p < 0.05). The swing phase of the affected sidelower extremities significantly increased (p < 0.05), and the stance phase significantly decreased (p < 0.05). Double-support unloading phase (pre-swing phase) significantly increased (p < 0.05). The changes in plantar pressure were significantly increased in some lateral zones and significantly decreased in the medial zone of the mid-hindfoot, both in terms of pressure per time and peak pressure (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Although this study did not show immediate positive effects on gait parameters and gait cycle, it is expected that sensory input from the sole of the foot through changes in plantar pressure may help improve gait asymmetry and regulate postural symmetry. This study aimed to evaluate the distribution and severity of cartilage damage using magnetic resonance imaging in patients with scaphoid nonunion without advanced wrist arthritis. We retrospectively analysed MRI of patients who underwent osteosynthesis for scaphoid nonunion. Cartilage damage was assessed in eight wrist regions using a modified Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score. The frequencies of regions affected by any cartilage damage (Score ≥2.5) depicted on MRI were analysed. The study included 32 patients (31 men and one woman), with a mean age of 32 years (SD 11). The distal radioscaphoid (29/32), scaphotrapeziotrapezoid (STT) (22/32), proximal radioscaphoid (14/32) and scaphocapitate (11/32) joints were most commonly affected by degenerative cartilage damage. The STT and proximal radioscaphoid joint were especially likely to be involved in early-stage scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse. We recommend that surgeons should investigate the cartilage status of these joints during decision-making for scaphoid nonunion surgery. Level of evidence: III [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
