Abstract

To solve the problem of the excess of multi-muon events observed in several cosmic ray experiments at ultra-high energies (so-called "muon puzzle"), an analysis of the energy characteristics of the muon component of extensive air showers (EAS) is required. A possible approach to such investigations is the measurement of the energy deposit of muon bundles in the detector, which provides information on the mean muon energy. In the experiment now being conducted at the NEVOD-DECOR complex, the local muon density and EAS arrival direction are determined according to the data of the coordinate-tracking detector DECOR, whereas the energy deposit is measured by means of the Cherenkov water calorimeter NEVOD. Results of the measurements of the energy deposit of inclined muon bundles based on the data accumulated during more than 23,200 h observations in 2012 - 2016 are presented and compared with simulations performed by means of the CORSIKA code. Abstract

The Russian-Italian NEVOD-DECOR experiment on measurements of the local muon density spectra at various zenith angles gave the possibility to obtain important information on the primary cosmic ray flux and interaction characteristics in a wide energy range from 1015 to more than 1018M eV. At large zenith angles and high muon densities, a considerable excess of muon bundles has been found in comparison with expectation. Abstract

The large-scale coordinate-tracking detector TREK for registration of inclined EAS is being developed in MEPhI. The detector is based on multiwire drift chambers from the neutrino experiment at the IHEP U-70 accelerator. Their key advantages are a large effective area (1.85m2), a good coordinate and angular resolution with a small number of measuring channels. The detector will be operated as part of the experimental complex NEVOD, in particular, jointly with a Cherenkov water detector (CWD) with a volume of 2000 cubic meters and the coordinate detector DECOR. The first part of the detector named Coordinate- Tracking Unit based on the Drift Chambers (CTUDC), representing two coordinate planes of 8 drift chambers in each, has been developed and mounted on opposite sides of the CWD. It has the same principle of joint operation with the NEVOD-DECOR triggering system and the same drift chambers alignment, so the main features of the TREK detector will be examined. Abstract

The neutron component of EAS has not been practically studied for many years. Creation of the neutron detector arrays PRISMA-32 and PRISMA-YBJ demonstrated the effectiveness of such investigations. It is important to underline that recording the EAS neutron component is carried out over the whole array area. Development of a new larger scale neutron detector array (URAN) in MEPhI will continue these studies. During the construction of the URAN array, a new design of en-detectors based on the scintillator with natural boron and new electronics was developed. The use of new electronics with a switchable sampling rate allows one to reach EAS fast timing accuracy up to 10 ns. The en-detectors of the URAN are located on the roofs of the buildings. The sensitive area of each detector is 0.36m2, while the array's starting area is ~ 103 m2. Total number of the initial array detectors is 72. They are subdivided into 6 independent clusters each of 12 en-detectors, connected with the central data acquisition station. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In 2014, the creation of a new cluster type shower array NEVOD-EAS was started around the Cherenkov Water Detector NEVOD and coordinate detector DECOR. The shower array will allow to determine the size, axis position and arrival direction of EAS registered by these detectors. In 2015-2016, the NEVOD-EAS central part, including 4 clusters of scintillation detector stations located on an area of about 104 m2, was deployed and started operation. Differential and integral energy spectra of cosmic ray muons in the energy range from several TeV to ~ 1 PeV obtained by means of the analysis of multiple interactions of muons (pair meter technique) in the Baksan underground scintillation telescope (BUST) are presented. Abstract

Muon rate variations during Forbush effects registered by means of muon detectors DECOR, TEMP and URAGAN operated in the experimental complex NEVOD (MEPhI, Moscow) have been studied, and comparative analysis with neutron monitor data has been performed. The ratio of values of Forbush decreases in muon and in neutron fluxes is about one third, and preliminary rigidity dependence of Forbush decrease amplitude using muon data has been also obtained (for 2.4 GV cut-off rigidity). The detection of muon flux in the hodoscopic mode allows to study the dynamics of muon flux anisotropy related with magnetic field perturbations. Results of analysis of data from the new unique muon detector URAGAN indicate the change of muon flux asymmetry direction during the Forbush decrease. This phenomenon is related with the motion of solar plasma cloud and hodoscope acceptance cone relative to each other., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Abstract

A new approach to investigations of ultra-high energy cosmic rays based on the ground-level measurements of the spectra of local density of EAS muons at various zenith angles is considered. Basic features of the local muon density phenomenology are illustrated using a simple semi-analytical model. It is shown that muon density spectra are sensitive to the spectrum slope, primary composition, and to the features of hadronic interaction. New experimental data on muon bundles at zenith angles from 30 degrees to horizon obtained with the coordinate detector DECOR are compared with CORSIKA-based simulations. It is found that measurements of muon density spectra in inclined EAS give possibility to study characteristics of primary cosmic ray flux in a very wide energy range from 10^15 to 10^19 eV., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

High-statistics data on near-horizontal muons collected with Russian-Italian coordinate detector DECOR are analyzed. Precise measurements of muon angular distributions in zenith angle interval from 60 to 90 degrees have been performed. In total, more than 20 million muons are selected. Dependences of the absolute integral muon intensity on zenith angle for several threshold energies ranging from 1.7 GeV to 7.2 GeV are derived. Results for this region of zenith angles and threshold energies have been obtained for the first time. Abstract

We describe two independent methods to calculate the angular distribution of muons after traversing a thick scatterer due to multiple Coulomb scattering. Both methods take into account the nuclear size effect. We demonstrate a necessity to account for the nucleus extension as well as incoherent scattering on atomic electrons to describe the muon scattering at large angles in thick matter layers. Abstract

The energy spectrum of cascade showers induced by electromagnetic interactions of high energy muons of horizontal cosmic ray flux in iron absorber was measured. The total observation time exceeded 22,000 hours. Both the energy spectrum and angular distributions of cascade showers are fairly described in terms of the usual muon generation processes, with a single power index of the parent meson spectrum over the muon energy range from 150 GeV to 5 TeV.

Abstract

A search for monopoles and tachyons at ground level was carried out using an arrangement consisting of an ionization calorimeter and two hodoscope detectors. No clear evidence for these particles was obtained. The flux of monopoles with velocities beta approximately 0.01 is found to be less than 5.1 x 10 to the minus 13th power square centimeters s(-1) sr(-1) (95% cl.). The upper limit on the tachyon flux density is set as a 6 x 10 the minus 9th power particle/square centimeter event.

Abstract

New technique of EAS investigations based on the measurements of local muon density spectra (LMDS) is developed. Application of this method to investigations of inclined EAS allows exploration of CR energy interval from 1015 to 1019 eV by means of a relatively small detector with area ~100m² due to very strong dependence of EAS muon density on zenith angle. During 2002-2007, long-term NEVOD- DECOR experiment (about 20,000 h live time) was conducted, and more than two million muon bundles in zenith angle interval 30-88 degrees were registered. Comparison of experimental data with results of CORSIKA-based simulations showed that the new method is sensitive to all main peculiarities of CR energy spectrum: the knee, increase of the energy spectrum slope with energy, the second knee. But the observed progressive excess of muon bundles with the increase of primary CR energy in comparison with simulations (even for pure iron composition) can indicate the appearance of new processes of muon generation. In this case, for correct investigations of EAS, the experimental arrays must be supplemented by detectors which can measure or evaluate the energy of muons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A high-density calorimeter, consisting of magnetized iron planes interleaved by RPCs, as tracking and timing devices, is a good candidate for a next generation experiment on atmospheric neutrinos. With 34 kt of mass and in four years of data taking, this experiment will be sensitive to $\nu_\mu \to \nu_x$ oscillation with $\Delta m^2 > 6 \times 10^{-5}$ and mixing near to maximal and fully cover the region of oscillation parameters suggested by Super-Kamiokande results. Moreover, the experimental method will enable to measure the oscillation parameters from the modulation of the L/E spectrum ($\nu_\mu$ disappearance). Abstract

A set of models for Monte Carlo simulation of production and interaction of high energy muons is developed in the framework of the Geant4 toolkit. It describes the following physics processes: ionization of high energy muons with radiative corrections, bremsstrahlung, electron-positron pair production, muon induced nuclear reactions, gamma annihilation into muon pair, positron annihilation into muon pair, and into pion pair. These processes are essential for the LHC experiments, for the understanding of the background in underground detectors, for the simulation of effects related with high-energy muons in cosmic ray experiments and for the estimation of backgrounds in future colliders. Abstract

Preliminary results of muon bundle studies in of zenith angle range θ ≥ 60° and multiplicities by means of coordinate detector DECOR are discussed. Estimates of muon bundle characteristics at large zenith angles obtained with CORSIKA code demonstrate the ability of such not large detector as NEVOD-DECOR complex to perform cosmic ray studies in a very wide energy range from 1011 eV to more than 1017 eV.
