The bought price is about 2 times as large as a normal electricity rate. However it is still important to improve efficiency of large-scale photovoltaic (LSPV) systems in order to return high investment as soon as possible. About 2MW PV system was constructed and tested in Hokuto to verify grid stabilization with a large-scale PV system. In order to connect it to an existing extra-high voltage AC grid effectively and operate stably, a 400kW large-scale power conditioner (LS-PCS) with the functions, which were voltage fluctuation suppression, harmonics current suppression, and fault-ride-through function, were developed. In the verification tests, a modification of key control systems of the LS-PCS was carried out to get PV generation power with high efficiency. In the paper, we clarified a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control method to get more PV energy efficiently. The verification test results of grid stabilization systems and PV modules and systems in Hokuto mega-solar system were also shown and discussed.

A large-scale power conditioning system (LS-PCS) with grid stabilization controls have also developed to connect to the existing extra high voltage grid. Five-year’s verification test was finished successfully in March, 2011. The verification test results of grid stabilization systems, the evaluation test results on PV module characteristics and their systems, and EMC noise generated from the LS-PCS in Hokuto mega-solar system were discussed in this paper.

26th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 3075-3079, “HOKUTO Mega-Solar Project” had been conducted by NEDO in Hokuto city, Japan from 2006 to 2011. Twenty four different kinds of PV modules are installed in the first phase of the demonstration. After the three years outdoor exposure, most modules and systems showed degradation of the performance. Annual degradation rates of the crystalline silicon technologies were around -1.2 [%/year] in average in the systems and around -1.0 [%/year] in the modules. Other thin film technologies showed larger degradation rate with the seasonal change of the peak powers.

The performance of PV modules based on seven different PV technologies has been compared. This paper describes quantitative analysis results of output loss for PV modules to clarify the behavior of seven PV technologies in the field. As a result, annual performance ratios varied from 97% to 82% among the different modules. Spectral dependence of the amorphous single and tandem modules and irradiance dependence of CIS modules are confirmed. It is shown that quantitative analysis method is useful how the characteristic of PV modules gives the influence to the amount of the energy generation.

The outdoor I-V curve measurement of the single module is a useful technique to characterize the PV modules. However, the I-V curve measurements are intermittent measurements so the deployed conditions are not exactly the same as the real operating conditions. HOKUTO Mega-Solar Project has been conducted in Hokuto city, Japan since 2006. One of the objectives is the evaluation of the advanced PV technologies in the outdoor condition. Single crystalline silicon, multi crystalline silicon, amorphous silicon and compound thin-film are compared in both I-V measurements and 10kW systems. Higher module temperature than the real operating condition are observed in the I-V measurements because the modules are under the open circuit condition between the I-V measurements. CIS module had performance drop in low irradiance level but this is improved in the latest mass production. The a-Si and the a-Si/μc-Si modules showed better performance in the I-V measurements but relatively poor performance in the 10kW systems.

Hokuto city in Yamanashi Prefecture was chosen for one of the verification test place, which is called as Hokuto mega-solar project (HMP). In HMS, about 2MW of mega-solar system will be constructed, and 600kW PV system consisted of 24 kinds of PV modules were installed in the 1st stage. They are evaluated on the applicability to the future mega-solar systems. Large-scale power conditioners (PCSs) and their controls and operating systems have been developing to connect to an existing AC grid with little effects. They are installed in 2nd stage. The outlines and developing targets of HMT are introduced and some achieved results are discussed in this paper.

- Abstract
Background: SET and MYND domain-containing protein 2 (SMYD2) is a lysine methyltransferase for histone H3, p53 and Rb and inhibits their transactivation activities. In this study, we tested whether SMYD2 (1q42) acts as a cancer-promoting factor by being overexpressed in gastric cancer. Methods: We analysed 7 gastric cancer cell lines and 147 primary tumor samples of gastric cancer, which were curatively resected in our hospital. Results: SET and MYND domain-containing protein 2 was detected in these cell lines (five out of seven cell lines; 71.4%) and primary tumor samples (fifty-six out of one hundred and forty-seven cases; 38.1%). Knockdown of SMYD2 using specific small interfering RNA inhibited proliferation, migration and invasion of SMYD2-overexpressing cells in a TP53 mutation-independent manner. Overexpression of SMYD2 protein correlated with larger tumor size, more aggressive lymphatic invasion, deeper tumor invasion and higher rates of lymph node metastasis and recurrence. Patients with SMYD2-overexpressing tumours had a worse overall rate of survival than those with non-expressing tumours (P=0.0073, log-rank test) in an intensity and proportion score-dependent manner. Moreover, multivariate analysis demonstrated that SMYD2 was independently associated with worse outcome (P=0.0021, hazard ratio 4.25 (1.69–10.7)). Conclusions: These findings suggest that SMYD2 has a crucial role in tumor cell proliferation by its overexpression and highlight its usefulness as a prognostic factor and potential therapeutic target in gastric cancer.

The control of seedborne rice seedling diseases in the seed beds is important to avoid epidemics in rice nurseries and paddies, which may result in severe yield loss. Recently, irradiation with plasma containing electrons, creating positive or negative ions and neutral species, has been shown to have an antimicrobial effect, probably via generation of reactive oxygen species. This study examines whether two seedborne rice seedling diseases, bakanae disease caused by the fungal pathogen Fusarium fujikuroi, and bacterial seedling blight caused by Burkholderia plantarii, are suppressed by irradiation of infected rice seeds with atmospheric plasma. Seed germination and seedling growth were not inhibited in plasma-treated healthy seeds. When F. fujikuroi-infected rice seeds were irradiated with plasma after being immersed in sterile distilled water, bakanae disease severity index and the percentage of plants with symptoms were reduced to 18.1% and 7.8% of non-irradiated control, respectively, depending on the duration of plasma irradiation. The bacterial seedling blight disease index was also reduced by plasma irradiation in vacuum-inoculated seeds to 38.6% of the non-irradiated control, and in infected seeds harvested from spray-inoculated heads of rice plants to 40.1% of the control. Therefore, plasma irradiation seems to be effective in controlling two independent seedborne rice seedling diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
