Abstract

A Boolean function $f:\{0,1\}^d \mapsto \{0,1\}$ is unate if, along each coordinate, the function is either nondecreasing or nonincreasing. In this note, we prove that any nonadaptive, one-sided error unateness tester must make $\Omega(\frac{d}{\log d})$ queries. This result improves upon the $\Omega(\frac{d}{\log^2 d})$ lower bound for the same class of testers due to Chen et al. (STOC, 2017).

Abstract

We study the problem of testing unateness of functions $f:\{0,1\}^d \to \mathbb{R}.$ We give a $O(\frac{d}{\epsilon} \cdot \log\frac{d}{\epsilon})$-query nonadaptive tester and a $O(\frac{d}{\epsilon})$-query adaptive tester and show that both testers are optimal for a fixed distance parameter $\epsilon$. Previously known unateness testers worked only for Boolean functions, and their query complexity had worse dependence on the dimension both for the adaptive and the nonadaptive case. Moreover, no lower bounds for testing unateness were known. We also generalize our results to obtain optimal unateness testers for functions $f:[n]^d \to \mathbb{R}$. Our results establish that adaptivity helps with testing unateness of real-valued functions on domains of the form $\{0,1\}^d$ and, more generally, $[n]^d$. This stands in contrast to the situation for monotonicity testing where there is no adaptivity gap for functions $f:[n]^d \to \mathbb{R}$.

159. Application of an Instability‐Based Fracture Model for Prediction of Crack Initiation in Modified 9Cr–1Mo Steel.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Ductile fracture of modified 9Cr–1Mo steel was investigated using smooth and notched bar tension tests. Round and flat notched specimens with varying notch acuity ratio were used to investigate the influence of stress state on the fracture strain. Simulations of the experiments were performed using the extended finite element method, together with an instability‐based crack initiation criterion based on the micromechanics of void coalescence. The parameters in the plasticity model were determined using smooth bar tension tests, whereas the void nucleation parameters were calibrated from experiments on a shallow‐notched specimen. Subsequently, the load–deflection responses and strain to crack initiation have been predicted for round and flat notched specimens with various notch acuities, and central notched specimens with notches oriented at various angles to the loading axis. Using a single set of parameters, the model was able to quantitatively predict fracture in different specimen geometries encompassing a range of stress states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The main aim of the project is to create an automatic solar tracker using an Arduino Uno microcontroller. The purpose of a solar tracker is to adjust the solar panels based on the position of the sun to maximize exposure of sunlight to the solar panels. The solar tracker is used to charge a rechargeable battery. A graphical user interface is created in MATLAB to obtain the data produced by the solar tracker, such as the voltage generated. A prototype casing is designed inside SolidWorks to use as a reference. The main circuit of the solar tracker comprises four light-dependent resistors, two servo motors, a solar panel, and an Arduino Uno. A total of six tests with different variables are carried out to determine the solar tracker's efficiency and threshold range. The results show that a dual-axis solar tracker is the most efficient among the other configurations as it has the most degrees of freedom allowing maximum sunlight exposure. The weather will determine if the voltage generated is high or low and affect the overall efficiency of the solar tracker. The final suitable threshold range is between 0.1 and 0.8 to adjust the sensitivity of the solar tracker. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We give a unateness tester for functions of the form $f:[n]^d\rightarrow R$, where $n,d\in \mathbb{N}$ and $R\subseteq \mathbb{R}$ with query complexity $O(\frac{d\log (\max(d,n))}{\epsilon})$. Previously known unateness testers work only for Boolean functions over the domain $\{0,1\}^d$. We show that every unateness tester for real-valued functions over hypergrid has query complexity $\Omega(\min\{d, |R|^2\})$. Consequently, our tester is nearly optimal for real-valued functions over $\{0,1\}^d$. We also prove that every nonadaptive, 1-sided error unateness tester for Boolean functions needs $\Omega(\sqrt{d}/\epsilon)$ queries. Previously, no lower bounds for testing unateness were known.

Abstract

Helium nanodroplets irradiated by intense near-infrared laser pulses ignite and form highly ionized nanoplasmas even at laser intensities where helium is not directly ionized by the optical field, provided the droplets contain a few dopant atoms. We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of the He nanoplasma ignition dynamics for various dopant species. We find that the efficiency of dopants to ignite a nanoplasma in helium droplets strongly varies and mostly depends on (i) the pick-up process, (ii) the number of free electrons each dopant donates upon ionization, and remarkably, (iii) by the hitherto unexplored effect of the dopant location in or on the droplet.

Abstract

Inflammation plays a critical role in the development and progression of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Inflammatory responses are indispensable for pathogen control and tissue repair, but they also cause collateral damage. A chronically activated immune system and the resultant immune dysregulation mediated inflammatory surge may cause multiple negative effects, requiring tight regulation and dampening of the immune response to minimize host injury. While chronic diseases are characterized by systemic inflammation, the mechanistic relationship of neutrophils and lymphocytes to inflammation and its correlation with the clinical outcomes is yet to be elucidated. The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an easy-to-measure laboratory marker used to assess systemic inflammation. Understanding the mechanisms of NLR perturbations in chronic diseases is crucial for risk stratification, early intervention, and finding novel therapeutic targets. We investigated the correlation between NLR and prevalent chronic conditions as a measure of systemic inflammation. In addition to predicting the risk of impending chronic conditions, NLR may also provide insight into their progression. This review summarizes the mechanisms of NLR perturbations at cellular and molecular levels, and the key inflammatory signaling pathways involved in the progression of chronic diseases. We have also explored preclinical studies investigating these pathways and the effect of quelling inflammation in chronic disease as reported by a few in vitro, in vivo studies, and clinical trials.
