Background: The wine-growing sector is probably one of the agricultural areas where the ties between product quality and territory are most evident. Geographical indication is a key element in this context, and previous literature has focused on demonstrating how certification of origin influences the wine purchaser's behavior. However, less attention has been devoted to understanding how the value of a given name of origin may or may not be determined by the various elements that characterize the typicality of the wine product on that territory: vines, production techniques, etc., Methods: It thus seems interesting, in this framework, to evaluate the impacts of several characteristic attributes on the preferences of consumers. This paper will analyze, in particular, the role of the presence of autochthonous vines in consumers' choices. The connection between name of origin and autochthonous vines appears to be particularly important in achieving product "recognisability", while introducing "international" vines in considerable measure into blends might result in the loss of the peculiarity of certain characteristic and typical local productions. A standardization of taste could thus risk compromising the reputation of traditional production areas. The objective of this study is to estimate, through an experimental auction on the case study of Chianti, the differences in willingness to pay for wines produced with different shares of typical vines., Results: The results show that consumers have a willingness to pay for wine produced with typical blends 34% greater than for wines with international blends., Conclusion: However, this difference is not confirmed by blind tasting, raising the issue of the relationship between exante expectations about vine typicality and real wine sensorial characteristics. Finally, some recent patents related to wine testing and wine packaging are reviewed.

Meat is expensive to produce, making it is essential to understand the importance consumers pay to different meat cuts. Previous research on consumers' meat choices has mainly focused on meat species, while consumer preferences for meat cuts has so far only received limited interest. The aim of this study is to shed some light into this relatively unexplored area by answering four research questions. First, this study intends to show the relative importance meat cuts play in relation to other extrinsic product attributes. Secondly, this paper looks into differences in choice criteria between regular and special occasions. Third, consumer segments that differ in their preferences and beef purchase are identified, and, finally, the meat purchase portfolios of these segments are revealed. A stated preference methodology of a discrete choice experiment with cut-specific prices covering several meat cuts simultaneously is proposed to answer the research questions. The sample consists of 1500 respondents representative of the Italian population in terms of age, gender and geographic location The results shows that meat cut is the most important factor when choosing bovine meat followed by quality certification (origin), production technique, the type of breed and price. In terms of consumption occasions, we observe significantly lower price sensitivity for marbled steaks and cutlets for special occasions compared to normal occasions. Segmentation analysis shows that while the choices of two segments (comprising about 40% of the sample) are mostly driven by extrinsic product attributes, the remaining segments are mostly driven by meat cuts. These varying preferences are also reflected in the purchase portfolios of the different segments, while less variability is detected from a socio-demographic perspective., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. The issues related to the appropriate planning of the territory are particularly pronounced in highly inhabited areas (urban areas), where in addition to protecting the environment, it is important to consider an anthropogenic (urban) development placed in the context of sustainable growth. This work aims at mathematically simulating the changes in the land use, by implementing an artificial neural network (ANN) model. More specifically, it will analyze how the increase of urban areas will develop and whether this development would impact on areas with particular socioeconomic and environmental value, defined as multifunctional areas. The simulation is applied to the Chianti Area, located in the province of Florence, in Italy. Chianti is an area with a unique landscape, and its territorial planning requires a careful examination of the territory in which it is inserted.

Understanding how the brain processes errors is an essential and active field of neuroscience. Real time extraction and analysis of error signals provide an innovative method of assessing how individuals perceive ongoing interactions without recourse to overt behaviour. This area of research is critical in modern Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) design, but may also open fruitful perspectives in cognitive neuroscience research. In this context, we sought to determine whether we can extract discriminatory error-related activity in the source space, online, and on a trial by trial basis from electroencephalography data recorded during motor imagery. Using a data driven approach, based on interpretable inverse solution algorithms, we assessed the extent to which automatically extracted error-related activity was physiologically and functionally interpretable according to performance monitoring literature. The applicability of inverse solution based methods for automatically extracting error signals, in the presence of noise generated by motor imagery, was validated by simulation. Representative regions of interest, outlining the primary generators contributing to classification, were found to correspond closely to networks involved in error detection and performance monitoring. We observed discriminative activity in non-frontal areas, demonstrating that areas outside of the medial frontal cortex can contribute to the classification of error feedback activity., (Copyright © 2015. Among the different brain imaging techniques, electroencephalography (EEG) is classically considered as having an excellent temporal resolution, but a poor spatial one. Here, we argue that the actual temporal resolution of conventional (scalp potentials) EEG is overestimated, and that volume conduction, the main cause of the poor spatial resolution of EEG, also distorts the recovered time course of the underlying sources at scalp level, and hence degrades the actual temporal resolution of EEG. While Current Source Density (CSD) estimates, through the Surface Laplacian (SL) computation, are well known to dramatically reduce volume conduction effects and hence improve EEG spatial resolution, its positive impact on EEG temporal resolution is much less recognized. In two simulation studies, we first show how volume conduction and reference electrodes distort the scalp potential time course, and how SL transform provides a much better spatio-temporal description. We then exemplify similar effects on two empirical datasets. We show how the time courses of the scalp potentials mis-estimate the latencies of the relevant brain events and that CSD provides a much richer, and much more accurate, view of the spatio-temporal dynamics of brain activity., (Copyright © 2015. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a very popular technique for investigating brain functions and/or mental processes. To this aim, EEG activities must be interpreted in terms of brain and/or mental processes. EEG signals being a direct manifestation of neuronal activity it is often assumed that such interpretations are quite obvious or, at least, straightforward. However, they often rely on (explicit or even implicit) assumptions regarding the structures supposed to generate the EEG activities of interest. For these assumptions to be used appropriately, reliable links between EEG activities and the underlying brain structures must be established. Because of volume conduction effects and the mixture of activities they induce, these links are difficult to establish with scalp potential recordings. We present different examples showing how the Laplacian transformation, acting as an efficient source separation method, allowed to establish more reliable links between EEG activities and brain generators and, ultimately, with mental operations. The nature of those links depends on the depth of inferences that can vary from weak to strong. Along this continuum, we show that 1) while the effects of experimental manipulation can appear widely distributed with scalp potentials, Laplacian transformation allows to reveal several generators contributing (in different manners) to these modulations, 2) amplitude variations within the same set of generators can generate spurious differences in scalp potential topographies, often interpreted as reflecting different source configurations. In such a case, Laplacian transformation provides much more similar topographies, evidencing the same generator(s) set, and 3) using the LRP as an index of response activation most often produces ambiguous results, Laplacian-transformed response-locked ERPs obtained over motor areas allow resolving these ambiguities., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. A deficit in "interference control" is commonly found in adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This has mainly been interpreted as difficulties in inhibiting inappropriate responses. However, interference control involves processes other than simply the ability to inhibit. Consequently, we used sophisticated analysis to decipher the additional processes of interference control in these patients. We compared interference control between 16 adults with ADHD and 15 control adults performing a Simon task. In most studies, performance is generally reported in terms of mean error rates and reaction times (RTs). However, here we used distribution analyses of behavioral data, complemented by analyses of electromyographic (EMG) activity. This allowed us to better quantify the control of interference, specifically the part that remains hidden when pure correct trials are not distinguished from partial errors. Partial errors correspond to sub-threshold EMG bursts induced by incorrect responses that immediately precede a correct response. Moreover, besides "online" control, we also investigated cognitive control effects manifesting across consecutive trials. The main findings were that adults with ADHD were slower and showed a larger interference effect in comparison to controls. However, the data revealed that the larger interference effect was due neither to higher impulse expression, nor to a deficit in inhibition but that these patients presented a larger interference effect than the controls after congruent trials. We propose and discuss the hypothesis that the interference control deficit found in adults with ADHD is secondary to impairments in sustained attention., (Copyright © 2015. Analyzing RT distributions in the Simon task reveals that congruency effects decrease for the longest RTs. Four experiments were carried out to examine whether this decrease of the congruency effect with response speed was under a top-down control or due to bottom-up mechanisms. We specifically manipulated the availability of attentional resources by requiring participants to perform a Simon task concurrently to different secondary tasks. RT distribution analysis (in particular delta functions) was performed under both single-task and dual-task conditions. Results show that the reduction of the interference effect with time could be affected when the Simon task was performed concurrently with a secondary task. Nonetheless, the type of the secondary task seems to be a critical factor. Therefore, the data suggest that the mechanisms responsible for the reduction of the interference effect with time are under some attentional control but the exact nature of these mechanisms remains to be explored.

Appropriate reactions to erroneous actions are essential to keeping behavior adaptive. Erring, however, is not an all-or-none process: electromyographic (EMG) recordings of the responding muscles have revealed that covert incorrect response activations (termed "partial errors") occur on a proportion of overtly correct trials. The occurrence of such "partial errors" shows that incorrect response activations could be corrected online, before turning into overt errors. In the present study, we showed that, unlike overt errors, such "partial errors" are poorly consciously detected by participants, who could report only one third of their partial errors. Two parameters of the partial errors were found to predict detection: the surface of the incorrect EMG burst (larger for detected) and the correction time (between the incorrect and correct EMG onsets; longer for detected). These two parameters provided independent information. The correct(ive) responses associated with detected partial errors were larger than the "pure-correct" ones, and this increase was likely a consequence, rather than a cause, of the detection. The respective impacts of the two parameters predicting detection (incorrect surface and correction time), along with the underlying physiological processes subtending partial-error detection, are discussed.

The study aims to identify future trends in food habits by comparing the food choices made in Italy by Generation X in the year 2000 with those of Generation Y in 2009. The analysis was conducted utilising the food expenditures surveyed by the National Statistics Institute on a representative sample of consumers. Segmentation was performed using the Latent Class Clustering in order to identify the principal food patterns and their evolution in the span of a decade. The results point out some trends of homologation in food consumptions that are potentially problematic from the viewpoint of the healthy aspects. An increase is noted among the so-called savers, characterised by a diet with a high energetic density, while a decline is noted among the young "traditionals" who stand out for their high consumptions of fruit, vegetables and fish. Out-of-the-home consumptions become established among singles, and there is an increase of easy to prepare and ready to eat products, especially among the young people with children of Northern Italy. These elements raise several issues with regard to social, economic and health implications. Public intervention becomes fundamental to provide information and stimulate markets in orienting producers and consumers towards virtuous models, compatible with the new demands of society., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Twelve subjects performed two temporal tasks, one explicit (Experiment 1) and one implicit (Experiment 2) after one night of sleep deprivation and after one night of normal rest. Experiment 1 involved a 1100-ms duration production task, and in Experiment 2 subjects performed a word identification task requiring implicit estimation of vowel duration (around 150 ms). One night of sleep deprivation had the same pattern of effect on explicit timing in the suprasecond range and implicit timing in the millisecond range. Specifically, sleep deprivation induced productions of shorter intervals in the duration production task and estimation of segmental durations as being longer in the word identification task. Both results are consistent with an acceleration of pacemaker rate.Moreover, in both experiments, we found a correlation between the alertness level of participants and the size of the effect. Therefore, sleep deprivation, which physiologically manipulates cortical arousal level, produced similar performance modulation in suprasecond explicit and subsecond implicit tasks suggesting a common mechanism.

We compared the performance of 15 adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and a group of 16 control adults on a temporal bisection task in auditory and visual modalities. The point of subjective equality (PSE) and the difference limen (DL) were computed to analyse performance. The main findings were that (a) individuals with ADHD overestimated the duration of both the auditory and visual stimuli in comparison to the control group, as evidenced by a shift in their mean PSE; (b) individuals with ADHD also showed less precision in their estimates than did the control group as evidenced by flatter psychometric functions; and (c) the degrees of overestimation and imprecision in subjects with ADHD were comparable across modalities. These results, discussed in the framework of the pacemaker-counter clock model of time estimation, suggest that temporal difficulties encountered by ADHD patients might be explained both by an alertness effect at the level of the switch that directs pulses into the accumulator and also by distortions of durations stored in reference memory.

Time is essential to speech. The duration of speech segments plays a critical role in the perceptual identification of these segments, and therefore in that of spoken words. Here, using a French word identification task, we show that vowels are perceived as shorter when attention is divided between two tasks, as compared to a single task control condition. This temporal underestimation pattern is consistent with attentional models of timing and hence demonstrates that vowel duration is explicitly estimated using a central general-purpose timer.

We studied the relationship between the velocity of movement illusion and the activity level of primary motor area (M1) and of the left angular gyrus (AG) in humans. To induce illusory movement perception, we applied co-vibration at different frequencies on tendons of antagonistic muscle groups. Since it is well established that the velocity of illusory movement is related to the difference in vibration frequency applied to two antagonistic muscles, we compared magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals recorded in two conditions of co-vibration: in the "fast illusion" condition a frequency difference of 80 Hz was applied on the tendons of the right wrist extensor and flexor muscle groups, whereas in the "slow illusion" condition a frequency difference of 40 Hz was applied on the same muscle groups. The dipole strength, reflecting the activity level of structures, was measured over M1 and the left AG in two different time-periods: 0-400 and 400-800 ms in each condition. Our results showed that the activity level of the AG was similar in both conditions whatever the time-period, whereas the activity level of M1 was higher in the "fast illusion" condition compared to the "slow illusion" condition from 400 ms after the vibration onset only. The data suggest that the two structures differently contributed to the perception of illusory movements. Our hypothesis is that M1 would be involved in the coding of cinematic parameters of the illusory movement but not the AG.

The present study aimed to investigate cortical activity associated with perception of illusory hand movements elicited by tendon vibration using magnetoencephalography (MEG) in humans. We compared MEG responses in two conditions of stimulation, "illusion" and "no illusion". In the "illusion" condition, covibration at different frequencies applied on the tendons of the right wrist flexor and extensor muscle groups evoked illusory movements of the hand. In the "no illusion" condition, covibration was delivered at the same frequency on both tendon groups and no movement was perceived. In both experimental conditions, equivalent current dipoles (ECD) were identified in each of four time windows: 0-200 ms, 200-400 ms, 400-600 ms and 600-800 ms. Our data showed similar activation in S1, superior parietal gyrus and supramarginal gyrus in both conditions, whereas the supplementary motor area, M1 and the left angular gyrus were found active in the "illusion" condition only. Our results confirmed the role of posterior parietal areas as well as motor areas in the arising of kinesthetic sensations. The hypothesis of an interaction between the angular gyrus and the primary motor area occurring about 400 ms after the beginning of the stimulation is discussed.

Tendon vibration has long been known to evoke perception of illusory movements through activation of muscle spindle primary endings. Few studies, however, have dealt with the cortical processes resulting in these kinaesthetic illusions. We conceived an fMRI experiment to investigate the cortical structures taking part in these illusory perceptions. Since muscle spindle afferents project onto different cortical areas involved in motor control it was necessary to discriminate between activation related to sensory processes and activation related to perceptual processes. To this end, we designed and compared different conditions. In two illusion conditions, covibration at different frequencies of the tendons of the right wrist flexor and extensor muscle groups evoked perception of slow or fast illusory movements. In a no illusion condition, covibration at the same frequency of the tendons of these antagonist muscle groups did not evoke a sensation of movement. Results showed activation of most cortical areas involved in sensorimotor control in both illusion conditions. However, in most areas, activation tended to be larger when the movement perceived was faster. In the no illusion condition, motor and premotor areas were little or not activated. Specific contrasts showed that perception of an illusory movement was specifically related to activation in the left premotor, sensorimotor, and parietal cortices as well as in bilateral supplementary motor and cingulate motor areas. We conclude that activation in motor as well as in parietal areas is necessary for a kinaesthetic sensation to arise.

In a time production task, the participants' activation level and attention devoted to time were manipulated respectively by means of click trains delivered at 2 different intensities during the task and by introducing a concurrent reaction time task. Activation level is classically considered to affect the rate of an internal pacemaker, whereas the way attention affects time estimation is a matter of debate. Three models that differ as to the effect of attention were evaluated. Predictions on the interaction pattern between activation and attention were derived for each of the 3 models. When manipulated jointly, these 2 factors proved to be independent, as they had additive effects on the performance. This finding suggests that the activation level affects the pacemaker rate, whereas the attention level affects an accumulation process by directly acting on a switch functioning in an all-or-none fashion.

The effects of seven isoenergetic dietary treatments: (1) no sunflower oil, 35 mg/kg Cu, without α-tocopheryl-acetate added; (2) to (7) 6% high oleic acid sunflower oil (HOSO), 35 or 175 mg/kg Cu crossed with a 0, 100 or 200 mg/kg α-tocopherol addition, were tested on quality characteristics of dry cured Parma hams from a total 84 Large White gilts. No statistically significant effect was detected on parameters of early evaluation of seasoning loss of hams. The seasoning loss and intramuscular fat content of seasoned hams averaged 28.1 and 3.3%, respectively, with no effect of the diet composition. The CIE L*a*b* colour values taken on the surface of the lean from Parma ham were not affected by dietary oil inclusion, nor by copper levels and by α-tocopherol addition in the feed mixture, except for the 'a' value that increased in HOSO groups (P<0.01) and in groups with α-tocopherol addition (P<0.01). The TBARS values in lean were reduced by the inclusion of HOSO (P<0.05) and α-tocopherol supplementation (P<0.10). Compared to the no oil group, the Parma hams in the HOSO groups showed a higher oleic acid content in the covering fat, but not different in neutral and polar fractions from semimenbranosus muscle. The oil inclusion reduced the saturated fatty acid content in subcutaneous fat and neutral lipids fraction from muscle to 30-34% No effect of α-tocopherol and copper levels were observed on fatty acids profiles. From the subjects fed the HOSO diet softer Parma hams were produced than those fed the control diet (χ(2)<0.05), while α-tocopherol and Cu levels did not influence the sensorial evaluation of hams. The inclusion of an oleic acid rich source in heavy pig diet brought about an improved nutritional value, but also the possible need of a prolonged ageing time to achieve an ideal firmness of Parma ham. Dietary α-tocopherol supplementation improved the red colour slightly and the lipid stability in Parma ham, while the supplementation of Cu in the diet had no influence on the tested parameters.

The present study investigated the processing of durations on the order of seconds with slow cortical potential changes. The question is whether trial-to-trial fluctuations in temporal productions or judgments correspond to variations in the amplitude of surface Laplacians computed over particular scalp regions. Topographical analyses were done using the source derivation method. Subjects performed three successive tasks: (1) time production, in which they produced a 2.5-s interval separated by two brief trigger presses; (2) time discrimination, in which they detected small differences in intervals delimited by two brief clicks in comparison with a memorized standard interval: and (3) intensity discrimination (control task, devoid of time judgments), in which they detected small differences between the intensity of clicks, in comparison with standard clicks initially memorized. In order to focus on subjective differences, in the two discrimination tasks most comparison stimuli were identical to the standard, without the subjects being aware of it. At FCz, reflecting activity from the mesial frontocentral cortex that mainly includes the supplementary motor area (SMA), larger negativities were found during the longer target intervals, whether these were produced (task 1) or judged so (task 2). Those performance-dependent trends were restricted to the target intervals of the temporal tasks; they appeared neither during the 2 s preceding the target, nor during the control task. The data therefore suggest that the SMA subserves important functions in timing both sensory and motor tasks. We propose that the SMA either provides the "pulse accumulation" process commonly postulated in models of time processing or that it receives output from this process through striatal efferent pathways.

The attentional model of time estimation assumes that specific mechanisms are involved when subjects explicitly process temporal information. Temporal judgments would depend on the amount of attentional resources allocated to a temporal processor (also called timer). The present paper provides some evidence in favor of the existence of such a processor. The first part shows the importance of attention for an efficient functioning of the timer, based on a cumulative mechanism. The second part is centered on the slow brain potential changes recorded over the scalp when subjects focus their attention on the temporal parameters of a task. The main result is the existence of a relationship between the amplitude of the brain waves and the temporal performances.

Prefrontal cortex and cerebellum have both been implicated in temporal processing tasks although the exact contribution of each system remains unclear. To investigate this issue, control participants and patients with either prefrontal or cerebellar lesions were tested on temporal and nontemporal perceptual tasks under 2 levels of attentional load. Each trial involved a comparison between a standard tone and a subsequent comparison tone that varied in frequency, duration, or both. When participants had to make concurrent judgments on both dimensions, patients with frontal lobe lesions were significantly impaired on both tasks whereas the variability of cerebellar patients increased in the duration task only. This dissociation suggests that deficits on temporal processing tasks observed in frontal patients can be related to the attention demands of such tasks; cerebellar patients have a more specific problem related to timing.

The "attentional model" of time estimation assumes that temporal judgments depend on the amount of attention allocated to the temporal processor (the timer). One of the main predictions of this model is that an interval will be judged shorter when attention is not allocated to the temporal parameters of the task. Previous studies combining temporal and nontemporal tasks (dual-task method) have suggested that the time spent processing the target duration might be a key factor. The less time devoted by the subject to the temporal task, the shorter the judged duration. In the two experiments presented here, subjects were asked to judge both the duration of a visual stimulus and an increment in intensity occurring at any time during this stimulus. In the second experiment, trials without intensity increments were added. The main result is that the judged duration was shorter when the increment occurred later in the stimulus or did not occur. In those cases, subjects had been expecting increment occurrence during most part of the stimulus and thus had focused for a shorter time on stimulus duration. We propose that attention shifts related to expectancy and to detection of the increment reduce subjective duration.

Positron emission tomography (PET) data were obtained from subjects performing a synchronization task (target duration 2700 ms). A conjunction analysis was run to identify areas prominently activated both in this task and in a temporal generalization task (target duration 700 ms) used previously. The common pattern of activation included the right prefrontal, inferior parietal and anterior cingulate cortex, the left putamen and the left cerebellar hemisphere. These areas are assumed to play a major role in time processing, in relation to attention and memory mechanisms.

The experiment reported here was aimed at determining whether the level of brain activity can be used as an index of subjects' performance on a temporal task. The discrimination of durations constituted the task. An array of four A's appeared on a screen, and subjects had to decide whether the letters remained on the screen for a short or a long duration as learned in a practice phase. This task allowed us to compare the level of brain activity obtained in correct and incorrect responses. The current density measures recorded over prefrontal areas showed that the level of activity obtained with correct responses was lower than those obtained with incorrect responses. This suggests that a good performance could be the result of an economic, but efficient, information-processing mechanism in the brain.

Changes in the plasma biochemistry of 12 stallions were studied over seven 24 h periods. Twelve healthy male horses of 4 different breeds (Thoroughbred [TB], Anglo-Arabo-Sardo [AAS], Avelignese [Av] and Maremmano [M]) were divided into 3 experimental groups and fed with an isoenergetic maintenance ration with different protein levels. The same amount of food was given daily at 0730 and 1930 h. After 20 days of pretrial, a series of 6 blood samples were collected daily from the jugular vein every 4 h for 7 days. The samples were analysed for packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin, plasma glucose, free fatty acids, cholesterol, total plasma protein, urea, creatinine, calcium, phosphorus and enzymatic activities: aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotrasferase (ALT), creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). The data were analysed following the armonic analysis (Fourier) in order to define the pattern of biorhythm. Many parameters showed a biorhythmical pattern. Protein levels of the diet failed to influence haematology, blood biochemistry and biorhythm. Thoroughbreds showed the highest values of PCV, haemoglobin and creatinine and the lowest total protein, phosphorus and enzymatic activities.

Duration information about a visual stimulus requires processing as do other visual features such as size or intensity. Using positron emission tomography, iterative H215O infusions, and statistical parametric mapping, we investigated the neural correlates of time processing. Nine normal subjects underwent six serial rCBF. Three tasks were studied: (a) A temporal generalization task (D task) in which the subjects had to judge (by pressing one of two keys) whether the duration of the illumination of a green LED was equal to or different from that of a previously presented standard; (b) An intensity generalization task (I task) in which the judgment concerned the intensity of the LED; and (c) A control task (C task) in which the subjects had to press one of the two keys at random in response to LED illumination. A significant increase in rCBF during the D task, compared to that during the C task, was observed in right prefontal cortex, right inferior parietal lobule, anterior cingulate cortex, vermis, and a region corresponding to the left fusiform gyrus. A significant increase in rCBF during the I task, compared to that during the C task, was observed in right prefontal cortex, right inferior parietal lobule, right extrastriate cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, left inferior parietal lobule, vermis, and two symmetrical regions corresponding to the fusiform gyri. No significant activation was observed in the D task when compared to that in the I task. We propose that these cortical maps are best explained by the recruitment of visual attention and memory structures, which play a major role in prospective time judgements as indicated by behavioral studies. The data also suggest that the temporal dimension of a visual stimulus is processed in the same areas as other visual attributes.

We carried out a perspective study in order to assess the ease of insertion, the type and the incidence of perioperative complications connected with the use of the Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA). We examined 300 consecutive patients, M/F 261/39, average age 4.2 yrs. (range 0.1-16), ASA I-II, who underwent surgical operations of short or average length not involving the pleural, the oropharyngeal or the peritoneum cavity. The choice about anesthesia was left to the discretion of the anesthesiologist. In 27 cases the position of the LM was controlled through a flexible fiberoptics. In 269 patients (89.6%) the LMA was correctly positioned during the first attempt. In 27 patients (9%), 2 or more attempts were necessary, and in 4 patients (1.4%) it was not possible to set the LMA. No differences of statistical significance were noticed between the different size of LMA, with regards to the facility of insertion. The control through fiberoptics showed a correct position, from an anatomical point of view, in 11 patients (41%), whereas in 13 patients (48%) some signs of partial obstruction were noticed (epiglottis interposing between the opening of LMA and larynx) and in 3 patients (11%) vocal cords are not visible. The following complications took place: laryngeal spasm on induction (2.3%), cough or movements on positioning (2.3%), hypoxia (4.3%), obstruction (1%), laryngeal spasm on awakening (1.7%), trauma (5%) and vomiting (0.3%). No connections were found between the size of LMA and total complications. Nevertheless, cough or movement during positioning and laryngeal spasm on awakening were significantly more frequent with LMA n. 3. In our experience, the LMA proved to be effectual and safe in the control of the airway during elective operations in pediatric surgery.

A seminal attentional model of time estimation predicts that subjective duration will be positively correlated to the amount of attention given to temporal processing. This prediction holds under prospective conditions, in which one is forewarned that judgments of time will be asked, in contrast to retrospective conditions, in which such judgments are required after the relevant period without any prior warning. In three experiments, an attention-sharing method was used. Subjects were asked to control the amount of attention that they devoted to one or the other component of a dual-task paradigm. The first experiment involved word categorization and reproduction of duration. The following experiments, based on signal detection theory, required discrimination of both the duration and the intensity of a single stimulus, in the visual (Experiment 2) or the auditory (Experiment 3) modality. The results indicate that when the attention is directly controlled by the subject, the subjective duration shortens as the amount of attention devoted to the temporal task diminishes. The implications of these results for the possible existence of an internal timer are considered.

In this study we compared the efficacy of a reduced dose of medium term neuromuscular blocking agents atracurium (0.20 mg/kg) and vecuronium (0.04 mg/kg) in short-term (8-10 min) pediatric surgery. Eighty-four children (ASA I and II) undergoing adenotonsillectomy were selected for this study. Their average age was 56 months (range 30-121 months). We compared intubation conditions and the level of neuromuscular blockade using accelerometry. The induction and maintenance of anesthesia were achieved by anaesthetic gas (halothane first followed by isoflurane). Later on 57 children received vecuronium 0.04 mg/kg (group V) and 27 atracurium 0.20 mg/kg (group A). The latency period was similar in both groups (114.5 +/- 36.1 sec gruppo V vs 100.1 +/- 32.1 sec gruppo A). Intubation was performed in the same period of time (159 +/- 17.4 sec gruppo V vs 156 +/- 20.8 sec gruppo A) and the stimulus was always less than 5% of the baseline values. Intubation was considered excellent in 93% of patients of group V, good in 3.5% and poor in 3.5%. Conversely in patients of group A intubation was considered excellent in 85%, good in 11.5% and poor in 3.5% (n.s.). The neuromuscular recovery, measured by T1 > 5%, was faster in group V (493.6 +/- 154.3 sec gruppo V) than group A (652.6 +/- 210.9 sec gruppo A) (p < 0.001). The TOF ratio during extubation was significantly lower in group A (0.556 +/- 0.177 gruppo A) than in patients of group V (0.789 +/- 0.173 gruppo V) (p < 0.001).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Skin colour was evaluated in summer in 91 Caucasian volunteers by means of a Minolta Chroma Meter CR-200, a colour analyser for measuring the reflective colour of surfaces by the tristimulus system. All the subjects were classified for skin type according to Fitzpatrick and minimal erythema dose determined. The skin colour of the buttock was taken to be the constitutive skin colour, and that of the cheek the facultative skin colour. It was found that the chromaticity of exposed skin was noticeably different from that of unexposed skin, being situated to the right of the latter in the chromaticity diagram. This means that skin that is usually exposed to the sun has a more intense red component, presumably because of increased vascularization. Exposed skin also showed lower reflectance (Y) or lightness (L*) than unexposed skin, probably because of pigmentation. Hence delta Y and delta L* give an approximate idea of the tanning capacity of each subject. delta Y and delta L* of skin types II and III were greater than delta Y and delta L* of skin type IV. This means that, with chronic exposure to sunlight, even fair skin can achieve a reasonable pigmentation. It is concluded that constitutive skin colour is a more meaningful parameter than facultative skin colour in assessing skin type.
