This article examines assumptions embedded in the routine practice of trying to make the places represented in qualitative accounts anonymous. Anonymity is usually seen as an ethical issue, but like any representational strategy, it conceals assumptions about the nature of entities in the world and our relations with them. Focusing on place anonymization, the author argues that the use of pseudonyms and the omission of identifying historical and geographical information align research accounts with certain ontological assumptions, modes of theorizing, and corporate constructions of the public sphere. According to Derek Freeman, Mead was hoaxed and that this hoaxing is of tremendous significance to the history of ideas. This article examines Michel Tournier's wordplay, and looks at how it informs the structures, meanings, and values of his fictional world, principally in "Le Roi des aulnes," and "Les MÉtÉores," and other writings. In "Le Roi des aulnes," the hero Abel Tiffauges, after mocking the conformist, those who live like fishes in water, lauds amphibians like himself who, in his admittedly myopic eyes, show greater flexibility. Tournier distinguishes between the mindless, automatic variety and his own professedly higher-order version. Tournier's ludic slant is no doubt temperamental, but is founded also on a set of beliefs. The matter of wordplay is intimately bound up with the whole relationship between the author and his readers. Wordplay serves both mystification and myth-making or, more strictly, remaking. Myths, like fables, symbols, or puns, are always tantamount, suggestive rather than definitive. Many readers have found something pungently decadent in Tournier's language and themes.

An eclipse of the sacred was talked about at one time. People thought of industrialization as though it were a great, ruthless flatiron. Urbanization was considered a diabolical mechanism of dechristianization. It was assumed that industrialization had dissolved the "miraculous" mentality, the sense of mystery, the fascination and fear of the beyond. In the author's view, one must establish the really social and structural connections which characterize them and provide them with a function of "psychic repair," as it were, especially for those classes and social groups which industrial development, particularly where it is most advanced, seems now to condemn if not to extinction, certainly to marginality and irrelevance as autonomous social entities. The hoped for passage from the sacred to the mystical, runs the risk of being transposed into the transition from the mystical to mystification. Clearly, the possibility of living an intense and genuine religious experience on the level of individual awareness is not here called into question. Rather, there here emerge the limits of an operation presented as the reply to a need for religious renewal, while in fact it hinders the necessary taking of rational decisions and logical political choices.

This essay examines Antonio Gramsci's prison notebooks published as "Quaderni del carcere," particularly on the miscellaneous ideas and materials he has recorded and collected in his notebook. These disconnected fragments amount to little more than quick memoranda which might acquire significance later on in the text when they are elaborated upon or become parts of more determinate contexts which would reveal how they fit within the overall design, structure, or development of Gramsci's project. The prison notebooks suggests that one remain true to the methods of criticism and philology in order to avoid making the blunder of constructing a sea serpent from a piece of a mouse's tail. The article focuses on Indian contribution to sociology of knowledge. Very early in the history of Indian civilization a regular study of some knowledge, learning or lore became a duty of some sections of the population. Every such study began with the enumeration of the topics and knowledge-systems learnt by the reciter or the pupil and also of those that he had yet to master or intended to do so. Combined with the early mystification and sanctification of the ancient poetic lore of the Rgveda and the formulae of the other Vedas, this cultural feature soon engendered the habit of tracing any newly systematised branch of knowledge to some sage of the hoary past or to Brahma, the great God of creation and learning. Whether they traced its origin to one or the other supposed source, most of the contributors to systematised knowledge endeavoured to carve out a niche of respectability for their branches. Over and above this urge, at least three other incentives operated in this field. First, a writer or thinker might have the need to specify the knowledge-systems on which he had drawn for his own treatise.

The article discusses British forger William-Henry Ireland (1775-1835), focusing on an Elizabethan forgery he created in 1794 and its written description in the 1796 published account "An Authentic Account of the Shaksperian Manuscripts, &c."
