Our societies are undergoing a process of transformation entailing new challenges. One of these challenges includes the urgency to address certain needs that arise from the rate of change affecting the multilingual and multicultural societies in which we live. In turn, new technologies, which involve the inevitable creation of new terms, are evolving rapidly as we try to incorporate them into our daily business. We live, therefore, with terminology, whether we are experts or not. In fact, there are a number of institutions with which we have an almost daily relationship and which have their own specialised languages. The question is how to handle these situations, what problems arise therein, and what the most immediate solutions are when this kind of event occurs in environments where terminology, specialised languages, and less widely used languages come into play. Throughout this chapter, and using all of the available information relevant to this matter, I will attempt to answer the following questions: Is specialised language used as part of the interaction between service providers and external users in the public services sector? How do participants handle such specific terminology? What types of documentation do mediators/translators and interpreters have access to? Nowadays, job and geographical mobility is becoming increasingly more frequent, leading to new communicative demands. As a result, Language and cultures teaching for specific purposes proves to be a need in academic contexts. Foreign language teaching and research follows this process of mobility and academic exchange by proposing new approaches. In this context, social actors are more and more confronted to interact and communicate in multilingual environments without necessarily being polyglots. In this paper, we will present our experience on developing preparatory courses for university exchanges, based on the intercomprehensive approach. We consider that this approach is one of the possible methodologies for teaching and learning Romance languages developing in the learner skills to understand several languages simultaneously as well as to getting a certain level of knowledge of his own language. From this perspective, we have designed a pedagogical sequence that aims to prepare students for an academic stay abroad, exploring languages and cultural aspects of Romance languages. The history of England has left its mark on legal English, a language for specific purposes well known for its complexity and conservatism throughout the world, thanks to the widespread reach of the British Empire. According to many scholars, today legal language is excessively entrenched in the past and has remained the same through years. As a consequence, criticism against traditional legal drafting started to arise in the second half of the 20th century introduced by the Plain English Movement, first in the UK and then, with more momentum, in the US. Its supporters fight for the simplification of the language used in legal documents -and subsequently, all official documents- and propose a series of writing techniques to achieve their purpose of making "legalese" more accessible to the lay public. The aim of this paper is to see whether the drafting of Acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom (UK) has evolved towards a more modern style of writing leaving behind the conservatism that characterises legal language. In order to carry out the study, two Acts of Parliament of the UK on the same topic, but with a time span of 41 years of difference since their enactment, have been selected for comparison in order to see whether the principles upheld by the Plain English defenders have been applied in the most recent Act. Students' understanding of their own learning needs can improve, if they can be made more aware of their own learning processes by supporting their metacognitive development. Research has shown that membership of online communities can positively contribute to the social acculturation process of first year students (Wohn, Ellison, Khan, Fewins-Bliss, & Gray, 2013). Moreover, these social networking sites could meet specific learning needs. A group of South African first year medical students doing a second language communication course were invited to become members of a closed Facebook group with the purpose of lowering the threshold of online learning. These students reported that their metacognitive awareness about their own learning processes was raised, which made it possible for them to progress towards and access the online learning experience. In order to prepare students to successfully engage with native speakers and members of heritage language communities both at home and abroad, educators must develop course curricula that emphasize cultural practices, products, perspectives, and comparisons as well as provide students with opportunities to directly apply the skills that they have acquired in the classroom across a range of other settings. This article describes a Culture for the Professions course whose curriculum was based on the four steps of the cultural intelligence model (Earley & Ang, 2003): drive, knowledge, strategy, and action. The study focuses in particular on how students implemented the last two components of the model (strategy and action) by collaborating with local organizations to design and present culture workshops that were specifically tailored to each organization's needs and mission. In addition to benefiting the organizations themselves, data obtained from evaluation rubrics and postworkshop reflections suggest that community culture workshops allow students to become more aware of how culture influences the work of an organization and to develop strategies to bridge cultural differences in the workplace. Language centres offer credit-bearing language courses and language enhancement programmes, general education, and service learning subjects. The paper focuses on the methods of linguistic analysis in the sphere of teaching foreign languages as a form of shaping students' identity. Objective of the article is to consider the question of the origin, formation, and enrichment of the terminological system of the construction language for specific purposes. The article analyzes the ways of formation and development of the terminological system of the lexical subsystem, as well as the classification of lexical and semantic ways of term formation. The following tasks were defined: to consider the formation of a terminological system in the construction language for specific purposes, to determine the place of the term system in the language subsystem, to identify lexical and semantic ways of word formation in the construction term system. Applied methods . The article applies linguistic and structural methods and semantic analysis of authentic texts of the explanatory notes to the projects. The relevance of the presented research lies in the need to specify ways to form and enrich the ontological base of construction texts for their application in applied and theoretical linguistics. Results . The study analyzed and identified the main ways of developing the lexical subsystem of the construction ontology: terminologization of words in common language, metaphorization, metonymization, narrowing of meaning. Conclusions . The presented classification of semantic derivation of lexical units based on the analysis of authentic texts of explanatory notes can be used in the development of tools for analyzing the term systems of the construction language for specific purposes, creating dictionaries of terms, databases and information nodes of the virtual learning environment for both specialists and students in construction specialties. more...

This thesis reports on a meta-analysis of the most relevant employabilitycompetencies to foster refugees’ labour integration which may be potentiallyleveraged through a target language for specific purposes (LSP)MOOCsyllabus. Italso suggests to group the thus identified employability competencies into threecategories tofurther supportLSPMOOC syllabus design and implementation.Themethodology of meta-analysis was based on Cooper’s (2017) five-stage model andguided by exploratory data analysis (EDA) of a dedicated research corpus that wasspecifically tailored for this study. Three data mining tools were used to performnatural language pre-processing and pattern extraction, directed by key terms(employability, competency, competencies, skill, ability, abilities, vocational,refugee,andlabour) used in various query combinations and limiters. The aim in this research was to analyse the convenience sample comprised of 87 mono-, bi- and multilingual sports dictionaries in terms of their macro-, micro- and mediostructures. The results showed that an alphabetical organisation of the lemmas prevailed rather than a systematic (i.e. thematic) arrangement, and it was the predominant choice in monolingual dictionaries. Most dictionaries in the sample had a complex macrostructure. This macrostructural complexity appeared to be inversely proportional to the number of languages in the terminological reference work – namely, the more languages included in a dictionary, the lower its macrostructural complexity. Further, the definition article structure format – be it with or without any supplementary information – was the most frequent of all the article structures and was by far the most recurrent in monolingual dictionaries. A translation equivalent in a target language as the only component of an article was a dominant article structure format in multilingual dictionaries. In general, the most commonly included grammatical data were on word class and the number in nouns, whereas additional information included in articles varied from diatechnical labels, different kinds of restrictions in terms of usage, historic backgrounds, etymology, the first use of terms, etc. Ultimately, the cross-referencing system was most frequently applied in monolingual dictionaries., Cilj je ovoga istraživanja bio analizirati prigodni uzorak od 87 jednojezičnih, dvojezičnih i višejezičnih sportskih rječnika s obzirom na njihovu makrostrukturu, mikrostrukturu i mediostrukturu. Rezultati su pokazali da je abecedna organizacija jezičnih jedinica bila češća od konceptualne (tj. tematske) organizacije, te je takav ustroj bio dominantan u jednojezičnim rječnicima. Većina je rječnika u uzorku imala složenu makrostrukturu. Ta makrostrukturna složenost bila je obratno proporcionalna broju jezika u terminološkim djelima – drugim riječima, što je više jezika bilo uključeno u rječnik, to je njihova makrostrukturna složenost bila manja. Nadalje, definicija je – bez obzira na to je li u rječničkome članku bilo ili nije dodatnih informacija, bila najčešća struktura članka, i to najviše u jednojezičnim rječnicima. Prijevodni ekvivalent u ciljnome jeziku kao jedina sastavnica članka bio je prevladavajuća struktura u višejezičnim rječnicima. Općenito, najučestaliji gramatički podatci bili su oni o vrsti riječi te broju imenica, dok su dodatne informacije u rječničkim člancima uključivale oznake struke, uputnice za različita ograničenja u uporabi naziva, zatim povijesnu podlogu, etimologiju, prvobitnu uporabu naziva itd. The so-called latest technologies in the world of today constitute an indispensable component of teaching or learning foreign languages. Given as an obvious element of social life, they are regarded by teachers as efficient tools for acquiring and perfecting various skills, such as communicative ones. The dynamic development of the multimedia, also in the area of language teaching, incessantly faces language teachers with new challenges, whose aim is to fully utilise the potential of the latest technologies in the process of language teaching that respects learners' individual needs. The aim of this article is to present possible ways of using the multimedia, helpful in drawing language lesson plans for vocational language groups. The article deals with the area of communication and information technologies used in the classroom as these have recently undergone changes. Also, a discussion is presented of the advantages and disadvantages of the latest multimedia used in the didactic process. Compared to colleagues teaching foreign languages for general purposes, who can use ready-made syllabuses or programs, the LSP teacher has to reflect on methodology at the level of course planning. The scope and nature of the proposed course content is tailored to the specific needs of a student. The analysis of these needs is based on interviews and questionnaires. Dictionaries provide language learners and language users with lexical information and serve as mediating, supporting tools during language learning. Online dictionaries in the form of wikis can be assembled by dictionary users themselves. Their construction (selection of terminology and content of descriptions) in the home language class facilitates learning. During the learning process, dictionary users (university students, in this case) construct new knowledge and meaning based on their own experiences and motivations. The article is based on reflective feedback from a dictionary project undertaken in a faculty of education at a university in the Western Cape. Senior home language students were guided to collaboratively develop an online dictionary of language for specific purposes, thereby improving their communicative skills in addition to their lexical and academic subject vocabulary knowledge. Technology-enhanced language learning was mediated through a task-based language learning process. Data were generated by means of questionnaires that presented students with an opportunity to critically reflect on the use of technology as well as their own construction of knowledge by describing different scaffolding strategies in the selection of vocabulary employed during the process of wiki compilation. Positive results from the study highlight the benefits of appropriate, collaborative use of technology during language learning in a home language class. A new scaffolding model for learning content knowledge in the home language in a technology-enabled environment is proposed in the article. more...

Workplace culture and organization are evolving as they adapt to globalization and rapid technological development. Likewise, the nature and role of workplace language and the literacy demands of work are changing in the face of increasingly multicultural workplaces and global communication networks. Among these changes, recent research has highlighted the role that informal modes of interpersonal communication play in the functioning of the modern workplace. Successful participation in such interactions is seen as not just a question of fitting in socially, but of doing work through talk. Ethnographic research in the workplace has stressed the importance of understanding language by viewing it within its social setting and understanding the interactional norms of particular communities of practice. Research into language programs for the workplace reflects this shift in emphasis. In contrast to research in the field of language for specific purposes on the specialized vocabulary and formal registers of particular professions, a growing body of research focuses on teaching and learning the language of routine workplace interactions. This article reviews current research into the nature of workplace language, noting in particular the contributions from ethnographic and language socialization research. The Academic Word List (Coxhead 2000) consists of 570 word families that are frequent and wide ranging in academic texts. It was created by counting the frequency, range, and evenness of spread of word forms in a specially constructed academic corpus. This study examines the words in the Academic Word List (AWL) to see if the existence of unrelated meanings for the same word form (homographs) has resulted in the inclusion of words in the list which would not be there if their clearly different meanings were distinguished. The study shows that only a small proportion of the word families contain homographs, and in almost all cases, one of the members of a pair or group of homographs is much more frequent and widely used than the others. Only three word families (intelligence, offset, and panel) drop out of the list because none of their homographs separately meet the criteria for inclusion in the list. В статье рассматривается необходимость оптимизации профессиональной подготовки будущих инженеров в соответствии с ориентацией на CDIO и требованиями комплексно-системной модернизации инженерного образования в России. Включение дисциплин гуманитарного модуля, внедрение курсов иностранного языка специальности в программу подготовки инженерных кадров отражает ситуацию, когда акцент в обучении специалистов технического профиля смещается на профессионально-личностное развитие студентов средствами иностранного языка в процессе их подготовки к будущей профессиональной деятельности. Очевидно, что иностранный язык стал инструментом профессиональной деятельности специалиста в современных условиях. При написании данной статьи были использованы методы, применяемые на эмпирическом уровне: анализ научно-методической литературы, научное наблюдение, обобщение опыта, анкетирование. Также применялись методы, использованные на теоретическом уровне: абстрагирование, анализ и синтез, сравнение, моделирование. Предлагаемые нами модели языковой подготовки студентов технического вуза дают возможность реализации задач лингвообразовательного процесса и способствуют формированию лингвопрофессиональной компетенции обучающихся. Применение в практике преподавания иностранного языка для специалистов нелингвистического профиля широкомасштабного подхода позволило спроектировать модель обучения иностранному языку специальности в виде матрицы для подготовки профессионала широкого профиля. На основе узкофокусного подхода к обучению иностранному языку специалистов, от которых требуется выполнение конкретных, четко определенных действий и операций на производстве, используя иностранный язык, была создана модель обучения иностранному языку для специальных целей. В основе этой модели лежит построение профессиональной картины мира в соответствии с базовыми концептами, составляющими основы профессиональной иноязычной культуры, которую необходимо усвоить будущим специалистам в той или иной области. Очевидно, что для каждой профессиональной сферы требуется курс иностранного языка, характерного только для данной профессии или дисциплины, The article discusses the necessity to optimize the training of future engineers in accordance with the focus on CDIO and the requirements of a comprehensive and consistent modernization of engineering education in Russia. The inclusion of the disciplines of the humanitarian module, the introduction of courses foreign language for specific purposes in the training program for engineering personnel reflects a situation when the emphasis in the training of technical specialists is shifted to professional and personal development of students by means of a foreign language in the process of their preparation for future professional activities. Obviously, a foreign language has nowadays become an instrument of professional activity for a specialist. When writing this article, the following empirical methods were used: analysis of scientific and methodological literature, scientific observation, generalization of experience, questionnaires. The methods used at the theoretical level were: abstraction, analysis and synthesis, comparison, modeling. Our proposed language training models for students of a technical university make it possible to implement the tasks of the linguistic educational process and contribute to the formation of linguistic and professional competence of students. The use of a largescale approach in the practice of teaching a foreign language for specialists of a non-linguistic profile allowed us to design a model of teaching a foreign language for specific purposes in the form of a matrix for the preparation of a wide-profile professional. Based on a narrow-focus approach to teaching a foreign language to specialists who are required to carry out specific, clearly defined tasks and operations in production using a foreign language, a model for teaching a foreign language for specific purposes has been created. The paper discusses the possibility of designing an optimal model of the Russian language textbook for students of Social Sciences and the Humanities. The research starts from the analysis of the current situation - a critical overview of available textbooks, then points to certain shortcomings of textbooks in terms of their structure and content, and suggests certain corrections and modifications for improving the quality of textbooks and designing the most optimal model of the Russian language textbook for the above-mentioned educational profile. The textbook is examined from theoretical, conceptual and practical aspects. The theoretical-conceptual plan analyzes various structural components of textbooks at the macroand microlevels, examines the elements of its content and points to the functional specifics of the language for specific purposes textbooks in relation to the general foreign language textbooks. The main goal of the paper is to improve the teaching of the Ancient Greek Language through the improvement of the core course syllabuses. The paper focuses on an analysis of the existing syllabuses for the Ancient Greek Language for students of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of the University of Belgrade, future teachers of theology, by emphasizing the importance of knowing theological terminology. The selected example is the term "ikona" (gr. eἰcώn [ikon] - "image"). Descriptive, historical-comparative and contrastive methods were used in our philological analysis, including the necessary method of semantic analysis, in order to clarify the conceptual content of the term. The first hypothesis, based on the author's experience in teaching Ancient Greek, is that the knowledge of terminological paradigms of the Greek language stimulates and develops students' creative power to make correlations and to understand the comprehensiveness of the ideas contained in the New Testament, the ideas that one day they will have to convey to their own students. The second hypothesis is that language analysis and understanding the chapters of the New Testament in its original language create a very important feeling of closeness and familiarity with the language expression of the time of Our Lord Jesus Christ and his apostles. The paper aims to demonstrate the importance and significance of knowing professional theological language and terminology in Ancient Greek for developing theology students' professional competencies. Fashion in its various manifestations is a multifaceted phenomenon of the modern globalized world. The students studying Fashion Design and Technology should be able to track and analyze significant changes in the complex world of their future profession. Several new concepts and trends have arisen within the global fashion industry over the last thirty years (sustainable fashion, conscious fashion, etc.). The authors are interested in the linguistic side of these social phenomena which are relatively new and not well-known to everyone. As the world of fashion and its conceptual sphere are extremely changeable, they constantly generate new ideas and realities. This process is naturally reflected at the lexical level: new language units are emerging to denote the new. Within a comparatively short period of their existence, the new phenomena acquired their glossary and terminology which reflect certain processes, making up the whole phenomenon of conscious/sustainable fashion in general. For non-native speaker language teachers (NNSLT), that is, teachers who teach a language which is not their own first language, one very important skill is competence in the target language. However, the development and maintenance of language skills are often neglected in language teacher training for language teachers. It is assumed that the trainees have already reached the requisite level of competence prior to entry into teacher training programmes, or that the general language courses available to them are sufficient in addressing these language needs. In this paper I argue for the introduction of a new area of Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) to deal with the language skills needed by this learner group. I examine the literature relating to language for non-native speaker language teachers and review research in the teaching of language to NNSLTs. I describe a language course designed specifically for the education of non-native speaker teachers of English at a German university. Questionnaires, surveys and pre- and post-testing methods were used to evaluate the course. Fachbezogene Texte bieten dabei die Chance, Inhalte in der fremden Sprache leichter zu verstehen, d.h. den interaktiven Prozess des Lesens, die Interaktion von Vorwissen und Textdaten, in besonderer Weise zu nutzen. Der Beitrag zeigt an zwei unterschiedlichen Praxisbeispielen, wie solche Kurse konzipiert werden können. Es werden Praxisbeispiele der Universität Ljubljana, Slowenien und der italienischen Universitäten Venedig und Padua vorgestellt. Folgende Aspekte werden dabei besonders beleuchtet: Leseaufgaben und Lesestrategien, rezeptive Grammatik, Wortschatzvermittlung (Fachlexik vs. allgemeines Wissenschaftsdeutsch, Übungen, Einsatz von Konkordanzprogrammen). In particular, subject-related texts offer the opportunity to understand contents in the foreign language more easily, i.e. to take advantage of the interactive process of reading, the interaction of prior knowledge and text data. Two different examples of course designs are presented in the article, from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia and the Italian Universities of Venice and Padua. The following issues will be discussed: reading tasks and reading strategies, receptive grammar, vocabulary teaching (specific vs. general science vocabulary, exercises, use of concordance programs). 193. Trading Places, Creating Spaces: Chris Candlin's contribution to aligning research and practice

In referencing the title of Chris Candlin's (2008) plenary, this paper focuses on the continuing concern to align research and practice in applied linguistics, and more particularly in language for specific purposes (LSP) and professional communication. We examine how Candlin identified practices for trading places between research and practice and for creating synergies between them – and in so doing opened up new spaces for enquiry and understanding in the field. We identify and critically examine four approaches that Candlin developed to promote the alignment of research and practice: through particular research tools and methodologies, through the investigation of professional settings and inter-domain constructs (such as quality, trust and risk), through a concern with both rigour and relevance in relation to research and training, and through a focus on ‘critical moments of interaction’ in ‘crucial sites of engagement’ (Candlin 2008). To this end, we draw on the diverse domains and trajectories of enquiry outlined in the opening plenary symposium at the 4th Asia-Pacific Language for Specific Purposes & Professional Communication Association Conference from five standpoints: in recent impact case studies of professional communication in the Hong Kong context (Cheng 2017), in a ‘multi-perspectival’ account of Candlin's enacted philosophy of teaching and learning (Moore 2017), in examining the communicative basis of expertise (Sarangi 2017) and the concept of interdiscursivity (Jones 2017), and in the extensive fieldwork and analysis of workplace talk underlying the development of resources for new migrants in New Zealand (Holmes & Riddiford 2017). - Abstract
In 2015, three language teachers working with student engineers at different European universities founded the Global Engineers Language Skills (GELS) network. The teachers’ aims were to investigate and categorize necessary and desirable language and communication skills for engineers and ensure that these findings actively support the teaching and learning of additional languages in technical universities and engineering departments. We presented preliminary results of our work at CDIO’s international conference in 2016. In this paper, we summarize the network’s development since then, interpret the results of our investigations, and describe our work to disseminate our results and promote effective language and communication skills for engineering students. Task Based Learning / Teaching focuses on the action dimension of language use, i.e., various tasks performed every day that require cooperation with others and the mobilization of language. Language proves to be the most important instrument of action, even if the objective of this action is not necessarily linguistic. The pedagogical tasks used for language teaching for professional purposes illustrate the link between language and socio-professional action: the learning of the formal language system counts as much as the content of the domain of work. On these theoretical assumptions, the aim of this paper is to examine the degree of integration of linguistic and professional knowledge and skills into tasks designed for the teaching of business French. - Abstract
The article examines the methods applied by graduate master’s degree students of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University for the purposes of using knowledge of language for specific purposes in the work and study environment. Their linguistic situation is ambivalent: they act in the academic environment, and therefore the used language has to meet academic requirements; on the other hand, most of them are adapting to the linguistic environment at work. Thus, master’s degree students are able to view the subject of language for specific purposes and the knowledge and skills gained from a practical perspective. With the help of a questionnaire and an interview, the article is aimed at assessing the experience of applying the knowledge gained by the students who completed a course on language for specific purposes 2–5 years ago. The article analyses both academic and practical applications regarding knowledge of language for specific purposes. Extralinguistic factors are taken into account when examining why employed master’s degree students do not always use what they have learnt. The problems of the practical application of knowledge are closely related to the cultural situation; hence, the relevant issues of the postmodern epoch are discussed. The paper explores the interconnection of the practical application of knowledge that covers economic and political factors and globalisation. The study focuses on the academic application of knowledge about the language for specific purposes. Attention is paid to dangers posed for the youth language by the predominance of information technologies in higher education institutions. The article analyses how employed master’s degree students evaluate the course on language for specific purposes and the linguistic revision of MA theses, as well as explores how the knowledge provided meets their needs.
