163. A Rare Case of Canine Metastatic Spermatocytic Tumor without Sarcomatous and Anaplastic Variants

Abstract

Spermatocytic tumor is a rare testicular tumor, which is originated from gonocytes. It is characterized by the histological feature of tripartite which is composed of large, medium, and lymphocyte-like small cells. It is well-known that spematocytic tumor is benign, thus a good prognosis is expected after simple resection. Metastatic spermatocytic tumor is extremely rare and usually accompanied by histological variants including sarcomatous changes and anaplastic variants. In this case, however, we report a canine metastatic spermatocytic tumor without prominent sarcomatous changes and anaplastic variants. The mass was composed of three kinds of cells including large, medium, and small cells with high pleomorphism. The neoplastic cells had an indistinct cytoplasmic border and mitotic figures were frequently observed. The primary spermatocytic tumor metastasized to the abdominal organs one month after the resection, and the dog died 13 months after the surgery. Thus, careful follow-up is recommended after surgical resection of canine spermatocytic tumor even though metastasis in spermatocytic tumors is rare., Spermatocitni tumor je redak tumor testisa, koji potiče od gonocita. Karakteriše ga histološki nalaz tri morfološka tipa ćelija, a sastoji se od velikih, srednjih i limfocitima sličnih malih ć elija. Dobro je poznato da je spermatocitni tumor benignog ponašanja pa se očekuje dobra prognoza nakon jednostavne resekcije. Metastatski spermatocitni tumor izuzetno je redak i obično je prać en histološkim varijacijama, uključujuć i sarkomatozne i anaplastične promene. U ovom slučaju, međutim, opisan je metastatski spermatocitni tumor bez izraženih sarkomatoznih promena i anaplastičnih varijanti. Masa se sastojala od tri vrste ć elija, uključujuć i velike, srednje i male ć elije sa visokim pleomorfi zmom. Neoplastične ć elije su imale nejasnu citoplazmatsku granicu i često su primeć ene mitotičke fi gure. Primarni spermatocitni tumor metastazirao je na trbušne organe mesec dana nakon resekcije, a pas je uginuo 13 meseci nakon operacije. Stoga se preporučuje pažljivo prać enje nakon hirurške resekcije spermatocitnog tumora mada su metastaze u spermatocitnim tumorima retke.

Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the distribution of foot conditions, the risk of foot ulceration and its associated factors in patients with diabetes. Few studies have focused on the risk of foot ulceration in patients with diabetes. Methods: A total of 267 patients with diabetes who attended outpatient clinics in two tertiary referral hospitals were recruited from June to September 2016. The risk of foot ulceration was classified using the American Diabetes Association (ADA), International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) classification systems. The risk categories of each system were reclassified into high‐ (categories of 2 and 3 for the ADA and IWGDF systems and high for the SIGN system) and low‐risk. Results: Foot deformity was the most prevalent condition (38.2%). Among 261 patients without active ulcers, between 17.6% to 35.2% were classified in the high‐risk group and overall agreement among systems ranged from.42 to.56 of the kappa statistic. Insulin treatment was consistently associated with a high‐risk of foot ulceration. Conclusions: As the risk varies between systems, nurses should select a suitable classification system through validation studies and assess the risk in patients with diabetes, particularly, those receiving insulin treatment. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Foot ulceration is a major complication of diabetes and may cause serious health issues, adversely affecting the patient's quality of life.Although risk assessment of foot ulceration in patients with diabetes is regarded as a critical preventive measure, implementation of diabetic foot examinations by health‐care providers varies among countries.Only 6.1% of patients with diabetes have received a foot examination in the last 2 years in South Korea, and there are few studies on the distribution of risk factors for diabetic foot ulceration. Among participants, 73.4% had at least one foot condition and between 17.6% to 35.2% of patients were classified in the high‐risk group, depending on the system.Overall agreement among systems ranged from.42 to.56 of the kappa statistic.Participants with diabetes on insulin treatment were found to be at a higher risk of foot ulceration. 189. A corpus-based analysis of relative pronouns used in academic essays by Korean and American college students

Abstract

The present study investigates whether Korean college students are using two specific relative pronouns, which and that, similarly to American college students. In particular, the analysis examines the tendency of using each relative pronoun in their writing and comparing each group’s usage tendency in order to suggest some implications and guidance of corpus-based instruction. For this purpose, the study analyzed 445 Korean students’ academic essays and 224 American students’ essays. The results of this study are as follows. First, Korean and American students used that more than which in their writing. However, the gap between the numbers of each relative pronoun was greater in American essays. Second, there was a statistically significant difference in choosing relative pronouns that and which depending on antecedents. American students generally distinguished the relative pronouns systematically according to antecedents while Korean students did not. In terms of articles used with antecedents, Korean students did not demonstrate any easily defined tendencies except that they distinguished the use of relative pronouns with a definite article. Lastly, both Korean and American essays showed a preference for choosing relative pronouns according to syntactic structures. The study suggests that corpus-based analysis and instruction are essential not only for the learning processes but also for directing what students will ultimately learn.
