163. Plausibility and structural reanalysis in L1 and L2 sentence comprehension.

Abstract

This study examines whether English native speakers and highly proficient non-native speakers make comparable use of plausibility information during online sentence processing. Two sentence types involving temporarily ambiguous structural configurations—subordinate-clause ambiguity sentences and sentences with adjacent/split verb-particle constructions (VPCs)—were tested in a self-paced reading task. In the subordinate-clause ambiguity sentences, the pattern of reading times indicated that both native and non-native speakers used plausibility to recover from initial structural misanalysis. Native speakers were also able to use this information during syntactic and semantic reanalysis in the sentences involving split VPCs. Non-native speakers, however, showed persistent processing difficulty for split VPC sentences, regardless of plausibility. These results are taken to indicate that both native speakers and non-native speakers use plausibility information to recover from misanalysis, even in sentences that require major syntactic revision. The only clear limit on non-native speakers' ability to use this information related to lexico-syntactic/semantic processing difficulty, in that they appeared to be unable to use this information to recover from misanalysis associated with the structural properties of English VPCs. Abstract

본 연구에서는 청소년들이 게임 중독에 있어 어떠한 양상을 나타내는지 살펴보고 이에 따라 잠재계층이 존재하는지 여부, 청소년들의 게임 문제와 관련되어 있는 변인들이 잠재계층 분류에 영향을 주는지 여부를 확인하였다. 이를 위해 총 789명(중학생 400명, 고등학생 389명)을 대상으로 설문을 실시하였고, 수집된 자료 분석을 위해 잠재프로파일 분석과 로지스틱 회귀분석을 수행하였다. 잠재프로파일 분석 결과, 총 14개 계층으로 분류됨을 확인할 수 있었고, 이 중 임상적으로 의미 있는 계층은 7개였다. 이 중 3개는 고위험계층, 4개는 잠재적 위험 계층으로 분류하였다. 잠재계층 분류에 대한 영향 요인 분석 결과, 성별, 자기통제, 친구관계, 학교생활만족도는 게임 중독 잠재계층을 분류함에 있어 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 나타내었다. 이 변인들은 인터넷 게임 중독 수준뿐만 아니라 중독 양상을 다르게 나타나게 하는 데에도 영향을 줌을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 인터넷 게임중독을 연구하거나 인터넷 게임 중독 청소년과 작업하는 상담자들에게 인터넷 게임 중독 수준뿐만 아니라 그 양상을 파악하여 차별적으로 접근해야 함을 시사한다.

196. From a shareholder to stakeholder orientation: Evidence from the analyses of CEO dismissal in large U.S. firms.

Abstract

Research Summary: The post‐Enron era is marked with growing discourse of stakeholders, sustainability, and corporate social responsibility (CSR). Yet, commentators debate whether U.S. corporations have indeed moved toward a stakeholder orientation, given the difficulties in measuring such a shift. We assess this shift by examining corporate governance practices, especially the prevalence of shareholder‐ and stakeholder‐oriented practices in chief executive officer (CEO) dismissals. Using data on large firms in 1980–2015, we found that, before the 2000s, CEOs were less heavily penalized for poor firm performance when they demonstrated a shareholder orientation by downsizing and refocusing the corporation and more heavily penalized for CSR activity. This trend, however, reversed after the early 2000s. This article provides evidence of the evolution of U.S. firms' governance practices from a shareholder toward stakeholder orientation. Managerial Summary: Many people are skeptical of the assertion that U.S. corporations have become more stakeholder‐oriented over time. It is no wonder, as scant evidence exists for this claim. We tackle this claim head on by analyzing firm practices in 1980–2015 that contributed to chief executive officer (CEO) dismissal when the firm was performing poorly. Some practices, such as downsizing and firm refocusing, are associated with a shareholder orientation and others, such as CSR, are associated with a stakeholder orientation. We found strong evidence for a growing trend toward a stakeholder orientation. When the firm was performing poorly before the 2000s, CEOs were more likely to be dismissed for CSR activities and less likely to be dismissed for downsizing or refocusing the firm. Abstract

Background Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is used to diagnose type 2 diabetes (T2D) and assess glycemic control in patients with diabetes. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 18 HbA1c-associated genetic variants. These variants proved to be classifiable by their likely biological action as erythrocytic (also associated with erythrocyte traits) or glycemic (associated with other glucose-related traits). In this study, we tested the hypotheses that, in a very large scale GWAS, we would identify more genetic variants associated with HbA1c and that HbA1c variants implicated in erythrocytic biology would affect the diagnostic accuracy of HbA1c. We therefore expanded the number of HbA1c-associated loci and tested the effect of genetic risk-scores comprised of erythrocytic or glycemic variants on incident diabetes prediction and on prevalent diabetes screening performance. Throughout this multiancestry study, we kept a focus on interancestry differences in HbA1c genetics performance that might influence race-ancestry differences in health outcomes. Methods & findings Using genome-wide association meta-analyses in up to 159,940 individuals from 82 cohorts of European, African, East Asian, and South Asian ancestry, we identified 60 common genetic variants associated with HbA1c. We classified variants as implicated in glycemic, erythrocytic, or unclassified biology and tested whether additive genetic scores of erythrocytic variants (GS-E) or glycemic variants (GS-G) were associated with higher T2D incidence in multiethnic longitudinal cohorts (N = 33,241). Nineteen glycemic and 22 erythrocytic variants were associated with HbA1c at genome-wide significance. GS-G was associated with higher T2D risk (incidence OR = 1.05, 95% CI 1.04-1.06, per HbA1c-raising allele, p = 3 x 10.sup.-29 ); whereas GS-E was not (OR = 1.00, 95% CI 0.99-1.01, p = 0.60). In Europeans and Asians, erythrocytic variants in aggregate had only modest effects on the diagnostic accuracy of HbA1c. Yet, in African Americans, the X-linked G6PD G202A variant (T-allele frequency 11%) was associated with an absolute decrease in HbA1c of 0.81%-units (95% CI 0.66-0.96) per allele in hemizygous men, and 0.68%-units (95% CI 0.38-0.97) in homozygous women. The G6PD variant may cause approximately 2% (N = 0.65 million, 95% CI 0.55-0.74) of African American adults with T2D to remain undiagnosed when screened with HbA1c. Limitations include the smaller sample sizes for non-European ancestries and the inability to classify approximately one-third of the variants. Further studies in large multiethnic cohorts with HbA1c, glycemic, and erythrocytic traits are required to better determine the biological action of the unclassified variants. Conclusions As G6PD deficiency can be clinically silent until illness strikes, we recommend investigation of the possible benefits of screening for the G6PD genotype along with using HbA1c to diagnose T2D in populations of African ancestry or groups where G6PD deficiency is common. Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 다문화 가정 청소년들이 경험하는 진로장벽의 내용을 심층적으로 이해하는 것에 있다. 이를 위해 다문화 가정 청소년 15명을 대상으로 심층인터뷰를 진행하고, 수집된 자료를 합의적 질적분석 방법을 통해 분석하였다. 연구 결과 우리나라 다문화 가정 청소년들이 진로결정 과정에서 경험하는 장벽은 총8개 영역(자기이해부족, 직업정보부족, 불안과 부담감, 미성숙한 진로태도, 진로역량부족, 자신감 부족, 외적지원 미비, 경제적 어려움)과 16개의 하위 범주로 도출되었다. 다문화 청소년들은 자신의 적성과 가치관을 혼란스러워하고 있었고, 직업정보가 부족하다고 느끼고 있었다. 또한 진로와 관련된 중요한 결정을 혼자 해야한다는 부담감과 실패에 대한 불안을 경험하며, 미래 직업상황에서 다문화 가정에 대한 차별이 있을지 걱정하고 있었다. 다문화 청소년들의 낮은 학업성취와 언어적 어려움, 낮은 자신감 역시 이들의 진로결정을 방해하는 요인으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 다문화 청소년들은 진로와 관련된 이야기를 나눌 수 있는 조언자와 행정지원이 보다 필요하다고 보고하였다. 이러한 연구 결과를 통해 다문화 청소년을 위한 진로상담 개입의 시사점과 후속 연구에 대한 제한점을 논의하였다.
