168. Keeping an Eye on the Clock: The Role of Timing and Teacher Hiring in the Education

Abstract

Despite the importance of hiring high quality teachers, less attention has been given to districts' hiring practices, particularly in terms of the timing of hiring. To date, decisions regarding when and for how long to post job vacancies have been largely subjective and anecdotal. This paper examines the relationship between the time and duration of vacancy posting alongside the quality of teacher candidates that apply for these roles and those that are hired. Notably, although the paper describes a dip in teacher quality late in the hiring season, I find evidence that many exceptional candidates can be found on the job market at this time. The findings from this study provide important implications for the literature and practice regarding teacher hiring.

Abstract

We present Recipe, a principled approach for converting concurrent DRAM indexes into crash-consistent indexes for persistent memory (PM). The main insight behind Recipe is that isolation provided by a certain class of concurrent in-memory indexes can be translated with small changes to crash-consistency when the same index is used in PM. We present a set of conditions that enable the identification of this class of DRAM indexes, and the actions to be taken to convert each index to be persistent. Based on these conditions and conversion actions, we modify five different DRAM indexes based on B+ trees, tries, radix trees, and hash tables to their crash-consistent PM counterparts. The effort involved in this conversion is minimal, requiring 30-200 lines of code. We evaluated the converted PM indexes on Intel DC Persistent Memory, and found that they outperform state-of-the-art, hand-crafted PM indexes in multi-threaded workloads by up-to 5.2x. For example, we built P-CLHT, our PM implementation of the CLHT hash table by modifying only 30 LOC. Abstract

We present SplitFS, a file system for persistent memory (PM) that reduces software overhead significantly compared to state-of-the-art PM file systems. SplitFS presents a novel split of responsibilities between a user-space library file system and an existing kernel PM file system. The user-space library file system handles data operations by intercepting POSIX calls, memory-mapping the underlying file, and serving the read and overwrites using processor loads and stores. Metadata operations are handled by the kernel PM file system (ext4 DAX). SplitFS introduces a new primitive termed relink to efficiently support file appends and atomic data operations. SplitFS provides three consistency modes, which different applications can choose from, without interfering with each other. SplitFS reduces software overhead by up-to 4x compared to the NOVA PM file system, and 17x compared to ext4-DAX. On a number of micro-benchmarks and applications such as the LevelDB key-value store running the YCSB benchmark, SplitFS increases application performance by up to 2x compared to ext4 DAX and NOVA while providing similar consistency guarantees.

In this multicenter study, we analyzed the clinical characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of patients with idiopathic HE.Patients and Methods: Patients diagnosed with idiopathic HE (idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome: iHES or hypereosinophilia with undetermined significance: HEus) at six tertiary hospitals between January 2010 and June 2021 were included in this retrospective observational study. Demographics, clinical and laboratory data, and treatment responses were obtained from the electronic medical records of the study subjects.Results: A total of 73 patients with idiopathic HE (45 with iHES and 28 with HEus) were included in the present study. Overall, 12 (26.7%) and 5 (17.9%) were women, and mean age of patients at diagnosis was 51.84 ± 17.29 years and 60.21 ± 18.01 years in iHES and HEus groups, respectively. Forty-three (95.6%) patients of iHES and 15 (53.6%) patients of HEus received corticosteroids as 1st-line treatment. Treatment response to corticosteroids in patients with iHES was generally good: complete response (n=25, 58.1%), partial response (n=12, 27.9%), no response (n=6, 14.0%). Treatment response to corticosteroids in HEus was complete response (n=7, 46.7%), partial response (n=6, 40.0%), and no response (n=2, 13.3%). There were 13 patients (46.4%) with HEus who were not treated.Conclusion: Corticosteroid treatment is generally effective and well tolerated by patients with iHES. Some patients with HEus are treated with corticosteroids in clinical practice. 185. Algebra by the Eighth Grade: The Association between Early Study of Algebra I and Students' Academic Success

Abstract

Using the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009, we examine the association between taking Algebra I by the eighth grade and students' later achievements and advanced mathematics course-taking. To explore our research questions, we employ three distinct methods--regression analysis, fixed effects models, and propensity score matching. In all our analytic models, we consistently found that students who have taken Algebra I by the eighth grade are more likely to have higher achievements in the ninth and eleventh grades and to take classes beyond Calculus during high school. Although the study is correlational, considering the increasing number of students taking Algebra I by the eighth grade, its findings have meaningful implications for education policy, research, and practice.
