In the framework of our narrow-band survey of the Local Group galaxies, we present the results of the search for planetary nebulae (PNe) in the dwarf irregular galaxies IC10, LeoA and SextansA. Using the standard on-band/off-band technique, sixteen new candidate PNe have been discovered in the closest starburst galaxy, IC10. The optical size of this galaxy is estimated to be much larger than previously thought, considering the location of the new PNe in an area of 3.6 kpc X 2.7 kpc. We also confirm the results of previous studies for the other two dwarf irregular galaxies, with the detection of one candidate PN in LeoA and another one in SextansA. We review the number of planetary nebulae discovered in the Local Group to date and their behaviour with metallicity. We suggest a possible fall in the observed number of PNe when [Fe/H]$<<$-1.0, which might indicate that below this point the formation rate of PNe is much lower than for stellar populations of near Solar abundances. We present the results of a detailed UV and optical spectral analysis of the properties of 6 dwarf O-type stars in the SMC H II region NGC 346. Stellar parameters, chemical abundances, and wind parameters have been determined using NLTE line blanketed models calculated with the photospheric code, Tlusty, and with the wind code, CMFGEN. The results, in particular iron abundances, obtained with the two NLTE codes compare very favorably, demonstrating that basic photospheric parameters of O dwarfs can be reliably determined using NLTE static model atmospheres. The two NLTE codes require a microturbulent velocity to match the observed spectra. Our results hint at a decrease of the microturbulent velocity from early O stars to late O stars. Similarly to several recent studies of galactic, LMC and SMC stars, we derive effective temperatures lower than predicted from the widely-used relation between spectral type and Teff, resulting in lower stellar luminosities and lower ionizing fluxes. From evolutionary tracks in the HR diagram, we find an age of 3 10^6 years for NGC 346. A majority of the stars in our sample reveal CNO-cycle processed material at their surface during the MS stage, indicating thus fast stellar rotation and/or very efficient mixing processes. We obtain an overall metallicity, Z = 0.2 Zsun, in good agreement with other recent analyses of SMC stars. The derived mass loss rate of the three most luminous stars agrees with recent theoretical predictions. However, the three other stars of our sample reveal very weak wind signatures. We obtain mass loss rates that are significantly lower than 10^{-8} Msun/yr, which is below the predictions of radiative line-driven wind theory by an order of magnitude or more. Absolute and differential chemical abundances are presented for the largest group of massive stars in M31 studied to date. These results were derived from intermediate resolution spectra of seven B-type supergiants, lying within four OB associations covering a galactocentric distance of 5 - 12 kpc. The results are mainly based on an LTE analysis, and we additionally present a full non-LTE, unified model atmosphere analysis of one star (OB78-277) to demonstrate the reliability of the differential LTE technique. A comparison of the stellar oxygen abundance with that of previous nebular results shows that there is an offset of between ~0.15 - 0.4 dex between the two methods which is critically dependent on the empirical calibration adopted for the R23 parameter with [O/H]. However within the typical errors of the stellar and nebular analyses (and given the strength of dependence of the nebular results on the calibration used) the oxygen abundances determined in each method are fairly consistent. We determine the radial oxygen abundance gradient from these stars, and do not detect any systematic gradient across this galactocentric range. We find that the inner regions of M31 are not, as previously thought, very 'metal rich'. Our abundances of C, N, O, Mg, Si, Al, S and Fe in the M31 supergiants are very similar to those of massive stars in the solar neighbourhood., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures and 9 tables. High resolution spectra of seven early B-type giant/supergiant stars in the SMC cluster NGC330 are analysed to obtain their chemical compositions relative to SMC field and Galactic B-type stars. It is found that all seven stars are nitrogen rich with an abundance approximately 1.3 dex higher than an SMC main-sequence field B-type star, AV304. They also display evidence for deficiencies in carbon, but other metals have abundances typical of the SMC. Given the number of B-type stars with low rotational projected velocities in NGC330 (all our targets have vsini < 50 km/s), we suggest that it is unlikely that the stars in our sample are seen almost pole-on, but rather that they are intrinsically slow rotators. Furthermore, none of our objects displays any evidence of significant Balmer emission excluding the possibility that these are Be stars observed pole-on. Comparing these results with the predictions of stellar evolution models including the effects of rotationally induced mixing, we conclude that while the abundance patterns may indeed be reproduced by these models, serious discrepancies exist. Most importantly, models including the effects of initially large rotational velocities do not reproduce the observed range of effective temperatures of our sample, nor the currently observed rotational velocities. Binary models may be able to produce stars in the observed temperature range but again may be incapable of producing suitable analogues with low rotational velocities. The blue supergiant Sher25 in the massive Galactic cluster NGC3603 is surrounded by a striking emission line nebula. The nebula contains an equatorial ring and probable bi-polar outflows, and is similar in morphology, mass and kinematics to the structure visible around SN1987A. It has been suggested that both nebulae were ejected while Sher25 and the progenitor of SN1987A were in previous red supergiant phases. We present optical high-resolution spectra of Sher25 and a model photosphere and unified stellar wind analysis which determines atmospheric parameters, mass-loss rate and photospheric abundances. We compare CNO abundances to other Galactic B-type supergiants and find that Sher25 does not appear extreme or abnormal in terms of its photospheric nitrogen and helium abundances. The C/N and N/O ratios are compared to surface abundances predicted by stellar evolutionary calculations and are incompatible with the star having a previous red-supergiant phase. The nebula is likely to have been ejected while the star was a blue supergiant. The results are compatible with some degree of rotationally induced mixing having occurred while the star was on or near the main-sequence. Our analsysis suggests the star has a relatively normal stellar wind and mass-loss rate, and sits comfortably within the wind momentum-luminosity relationship. In light of the evidence regarding massive evolved early-type stars in the Galaxy we suggest there is no object which shows clear evidence of having had a previous red supergiant phase and hence of undergoing blue loops in the HR diagram. Five planetary nebulae (PNe) have been discovered in the nearby dwarf irregular galaxy. Emission line images were obtained using the Wide Field Camera of the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) at La Palma (Spain). The candidate PNe were identified by their point-like appearance and relatively strong [OIII] emission-line fluxes. They are located within a galactocentric distance of 2.8 arcmin, corresponding to 1.1 kpc at the distance of Sextans B. Luminosities are in the range 1800--5600Lsolar. Sextans B is one of the smallest dwarf irregular galaxies with a PN population. The number of PNe detected suggest an enhanced star formation rate between 1 and 5 Gyr ago., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

Boron abundances have been derived for seven main sequence B-type stars from HST STIS spectra around the B III 2066 A line. In two stars, boron appears to be undepleted with respect to the presumed initial abundance. In one star, boron is detectable but it is clearly depleted. In the other four stars, boron is undetectable implying depletions of 1 to 2 dex. Three of these four stars are nitrogen enriched, but the fourth shows no enrichment of nitrogen. Only rotationally induced mixing predicts that boron depletions are unaccompanied by nitrogen enrichments. The inferred rate of boron depletion from our observations is in good agreement with these predictions. Other boron-depleted nitrogen-normal stars are identified from the literature. Also, several boron-depleted nitrogen-rich stars are identified, and while all fall on the boron-nitrogen trend predicted by rotationally-induced mixing, a majority have nitrogen enrichments that are not uniquely explained by rotation. The spectra have also been used to determine iron-group (Cr, Mn, Fe, and Ni) abundances. The seven B-type stars have near solar iron-group abundances, as expected for young stars in the solar neighborhood. We have also analysed the halo B-type star, PG0832+676. We find [Fe/H] = -0.88 +/- 0.10, and the absence of the B III line gives the upper limit [B/H]<2.5. We have obtained the first high resolution spectra of individual stars in the dwarf irregular galaxy, NGC 6822. The spectra of the two A-type supergiants were obtained at the VLT and Keck Observatories, using UVES and HIRES, respectively. A detailed model atmospheres analysis has been used to determine their atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances. The mean iron abundance from these two stars is $<$[Fe/H]$>=-$0.49 $\pm$0.22 ({\it $\pm$0.21}, with Cr yielding a similar underabundance, $<$[Cr/H]$>=-$0.50 $\pm$0.20 ({\it $\pm$0.16}). This confirms that NGC 6822 has a metallicity that is slightly higher than that of the SMC, and is the first determination of the present-day iron-group abundances in NGC 6822. The mean stellar oxygen abundance, 12+log(O/H)=8.36 $\pm$0.19 ({\it $\pm$0.21}),is in good agreement with the nebular oxygen results. Oxygen has the same underabundance as iron, $<$[O/Fe]$>$=+0.02 $\pm$0.20 ({\it $\pm$0.21}). This O/Fe ratio is very similar to that seen in the Magellanic Clouds, which supports the picture that chemical evolution occurs more slowly in these lower mass galaxies, although the O/Fe ratio is also consistent with that observed in comparatively metal-poor stars in the Galactic disk. Combining all of the available abundance observations for NGC 6822 shows that there is no trend in abundance with galactocentric distance. High-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectral data are presented for four young B-type stars lying towards the Galactic Centre. Determination of their atmospheric parameters from their absorption line profiles, and uvby photometric measurement of the continua indicate that they are massive objects lying slightly out of the plane, and were probably born in the disk between 2.5-5 kpc from the Centre. We have carried out a detailed absolute and differential line-by-line abundance analyses of the four stars compared to two stars with very similar atmospheric parameters in the solar neighbourhood. The stars appear to be rich in all the well sampled chemical elements (C, N, Si, Mg, S, Al), except for oxygen. Oxygen abundances derived in the atmospheres of these four stars are very similar to that in the solar neighbourhood. If the photospheric composition of these young stars is reflective of the gaseous ISM in the inner Galaxy, then the values derived for the enhanced metals are in excellent agreement with the extrapolation of the Galactic abundance gradients previously derived by Rolleston et al. (2000) and others. However, the data for oxygen suggests that the inner Galaxy may not be richer than normal in this element, and the physical reasons for such a scenario are unclear., Comment: 21 pages including 7 figures; submitted to A&A

We present high quality spectroscopic data for two massive stars in the OB10 association of M31, OB10-64 (B0Ia) and OB10-WR1 (WC6). Medium resolution spectra of both stars were obtained using the ISIS spectrograph on the William Hershel Telescope. This is supplemented with HST-STIS UV spectroscopy and KeckI HIRES data for OB10-64. A non-LTE model atmosphere and abundance analysis for OB10-64 is presented indicating that this star has similar photospheric CNO, Mg and Si abundances as solar neighbourhood massive stars. A wind analysis of this early B-type supergiant reveals a mass-loss rate of M_dot=1.6x10^-6 M_solar/yr,and v_infty=1650 km/s. The corresponding wind momentum is in good agreement with the wind momentum -- luminosity relationship found for Galactic early B supergiants. Observations of OB10W-R1 are analysed using a non-LTE, line-blanketed code, to reveal approximate stellar parameters of log L/L_solar \~ 5.7, T~75 kK, v_infty ~ 3000 km/s, M_dot ~ 10^-4.3 M_solar/yr, adopting a clumped wind with a filling factor of 10%. Quantitative comparisons are made with the Galactic WC6 star HD92809 (WR23) revealing that OB10-WR1 is 0.4 dex more luminous, though it has a much lower C/He ratio (~0.1 versus 0.3 for HD92809). Our study represents the first detailed, chemical model atmosphere analysis for either a B-type supergiant or a WR star in Andromeda, and shows the potential of how such studies can provide new information on the chemical evolution of galaxies and the evolution of massive stars in the local Universe., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, MNRAS accepted version, some minor revisions

We present non-LTE analyses of four M33 early B-supergiant stars and five Galactic counterparts. This is the first time that B supergiants beyond the Magellanic Clouds are analyzed by means of detailed Non-LTE techniques. Stellar temperatures, gravities, microturbulences and Si abundances are derived for all objects using the Si ionization equilibrium and the Balmer line wings. O abundances are then also derived. Important approximations made during the calculations are described, and their influence on the results is analyzed. It is found that these approximations have no significant effect on the results at any microturbulence. We find that a strict differential analysis is needed to detect abundance differences. Thus we compare results line by line in M33 and Galactic stars of stellar parameters as similar as possible. Three of the four M33 stars turned out to be O deficient as compared to their Galactic counterparts, and only one, close to the center of M33 (M33 1054) is found to be moderately O enriched. From these differential analyses we find that our data are compatible with a radial O gradient in M33 as that derived from HII region data: we obtain -0.19+/-0.13 or -0.20+/-0.07 dex/kpc, depending on whether B133 is included or not. Our data are also consistent with other possibilities such as a steep increase of the O abundance in the inner region (at projected distances less than 9 arcmin from the center of M33), followed by a flat O abundance profile towards the outer parts of M33. Si shows the same pattern, and it is shown that Si and O correlate well, as expected for alpha-elements, supporting then the high value of the O abundance gradient in M33 as compared to the Milky Way and other nearby spiral galaxies., Comment: Accepted for ApJ. The first stellar abundances in M31 are presented, based on Keck I HIRES spectroscopy and model atmospheres analyses of three A-F supergiants, 41-2368, 41-3712, and A-207. We also present the preliminary analysis of a fourth star, 41-3654. We find that the stellar oxygen abundances are in good agreement with those determined from nebular studies, even though the stars do {\it not} show a clear radial gradient in oxygen. The uncertainties in the stellar abundances are smaller than the range in the nebular results, making these stars ideal objects for further studies of the distribution of oxygen in M31. We show that the stars can be used to study the abundance distributions of other elements as well, including iron-group and heavier elements. The A-F supergiants also provide direct information on the metallicity and reddening of nearby Cepheid stars. We have examined the metallicity and reddening assumptions used for Cepheids within 1' of our targets and noted the differences from values used in the literature., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ, October 2000 (23 pages, 4 tables, 11 figures)

The Balmer lines of four A Ia - supergiants (spectral type A0 to A3) and fourteen B Ia and Ib - supergiants (spectral type B0 to B3) in the solar neighbourhood are analyzed by means of NLTE unified model atmospheres to determine the properties of their stellar winds, in particular their wind momenta. As in previous work for O-stars (Puls et al.) a tight relationship between stellar wind momentum and luminosity (`WLR'') is found. However, the WLR varies as function of spectral type. Wind momenta are strongest for O-supergiants, then decrease from early B (B0 and B1) to mid B (B1.5 to B3) spectral types and become stronger again for A-supergiants. The slope of the WLR appears to be steeper for A- and mid B-supergiants than for O-supergiants. The spectral type dependence is interpreted as an effect of ionization changing the effective number and the line strength distribution function of spectral lines absorbing photon momentum around the stellar flux maximum. This interpretation needs to be confirmed by theoretical calculations for radiation driven winds. A-supergiants in M31 observed with HIRES at the Keck telescope have wind momenta compatible with their galactic counterparts. The potential of the WLR as a new, independent extragalactic distance indicator is discussed. It is concluded that with ten to twenty objects, photometry with HST and medium resolution spectroscopy with 8m-telescopes from the ground distance moduli can be obtained with an accuracy of about 0.1m out to the Virgo and Fornax clusters of galaxies., Comment: ps-document: 16 pages, 12 figures A&A in press

We propose a new method to detect the gravitational lenses in the ongoing microlensing experiments using medium and high resolution spectroscopy (resolution > 6000). Since the radial velocity of the lens and lensed source typically differs by ~100km/s, the spectral lines from the lens and source will be shifted relative to each other by (1-2)A in the optical. We simulate realistic composite spectra assuming different spectral types for the lens and source and study the lens detectability as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio, spectral resolution and lens-to-source light ratio. We show that it is possible to measure the difference in radial velocity from an unequivocal signature in the difference of cross- and auto-correlation functions calculated from two spectra obtained at different magnifications. If the lens is brighter than 10% of the unmagnified source we find that a spectral resolution of ~6000 and a signal-to-noise of 50 (at magnification maximum) are sufficient to determine the relative radial velocity of the lens. At resolution ~40000, the spectral resolution of high resolution spectrographs of 8-10m class telescopes, the lens could even be detected at a brightness of ~3% of the source. Radial velocities higher than 50km/s can be measured with an accuracy of a few km/s. We describe a real-time spectroscopic program to observe bright gravitational microlensing events toward the Galactic Bulge. The program is carried out using the NTT at ESO. We present the preliminary analysis of the microlensing events we have observed thus far. We demonstrate that these data provide detailed information on the intrinsic properties of the source stars; radial velocities, atmospheric parameters, distances and abundances. A high priority objective of this campaign is to obtain spectra of highly magnified cool dwarfs and subgiants in order to investigate their chemical composition and by implication, the formation and evolution of the bulge. The data will also allow us to investigate the nature of the sources (and the lenses) which in turn may aid the interpretation of the observed optical depth towards the Bulge., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures.
