Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to explore whether incorporating the peritumoral region to train deep neural networks could improve the performance of the models for predicting the prognosis of NPC. Methods A total of 381 NPC patients who were divided into high- and low-risk groups according to progression-free survival were retrospectively included. Deeplab v3 and U-Net were trained to build segmentation models for the automatic segmentation of the tumor and suspicious lymph nodes. Five datasets were constructed by expanding 5, 10, 20, 40, and 60 pixels outward from the edge of the automatically segmented region. Inception-Resnet-V2, ECA-ResNet50t, EfficientNet-B3, and EfficientNet-B0 were trained with the original, segmented, and the five new constructed datasets to establish the classification models. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to evaluate the performance of each model. Results The Dice coefficients of Deeplab v3 and U-Net were 0.741(95%CI:0.722–0.760) and 0.737(95%CI:0.720–0.754), respectively. The average areas under the curve (aAUCs) of deep learning models for classification trained with the original and segmented images and with images expanded by 5, 10, 20, 40, and 60 pixels were 0.717 ± 0.043, 0.739 ± 0.016, 0.760 ± 0.010, 0.768 ± 0.018, 0.802 ± 0.013, 0.782 ± 0.039, and 0.753 ± 0.014, respectively. The models trained with the images expanded by 20 pixels obtained the best performance. Conclusions The peritumoral region NPC contains information related to prognosis, and the incorporation of this region could improve the performance of deep learning models for prognosis prediction.

To find potential brewing ingredients for Luzhou strong-aroma Baijiu, two Baijiu samples were fermented using Glutinous sorghum (GS) and its mixture with Triticum aestivum L. ZN168 (MGZ) in the ratio of 2:8 (w:w), and their flavor substances and harzard components were tested using headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). The results showed that the proteins, polyphenols and anthocyanins contents in GS and MGZ were measured to show no significant difference (P>0.05), while the pectins contents of MGZ were down by 9.7% compared with GS. And compared with GS Baijiu, the total ester contents and the total acid contents of MGZ Baijiu were slumped by 7.9% and rising by 8.3% respectively, but both of them satisfied the national standards of superior Baijiu products in China. Meanwhile, being characteristic of high ethyl hexanoate contents, GS Baijiu and MGZ Baijiu both showed typical flavors of strong-aroma Baijiu. In two Baijiu samples, totally 102 volatile components were detected, identified and quantified, and 26 substances were found to contribute to the formation of flavor differences between the two Baijiu samples, using orthogonal partial least-squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA) and odor activity values (OAV) analysis. Compared with GS Baijiu, MGZ Baijiu had higher OAVs of middle- and long-chain fatty acid esters, fatty acids and alcohols, and its methanol and ethyl carbamate contents were fell by 20.6% and 39.9% separately, showing good safety with fill-bodied flavor, rich and mellow taste. These findings suggested that ZN168 could be a potential fermentation material for strong-aroma Chinese Baijiu.

Abstract The handy biometric data is a double-edged sword, paving the way of the prosperity of biometric authentication systems but bringing the personal privacy concern. To alleviate the concern, various biometric template protection schemes are proposed to protect the biometric template from information leakage. The preponderance of existing proposals is based on Hamming metric, which ignores the fact that predominantly deployed biometric recognition systems (e.g. face, voice, gait) generate real-valued templates, more applicable to Euclidean metric and Cosine metric. Moreover, since the emergence of similarity-based attacks, those schemes are not secure under a stolen-token setting. In this paper, we propose a succinct biometric template protection scheme to address such a challenge. The proposed scheme is designed for Euclidean metric and Cosine metric instead of Hamming distance. Mainly, the succinct biometric template protection scheme consists of distance-preserving, one-way, and obfuscation modules. To be specific, we adopt location sensitive hash function to realize the distance-preserving and one-way properties simultaneously and use the modulo operation to implement many-to-one mapping. We also thoroughly analyze the proposed scheme in three aspects: irreversibility, unlinkability and revocability. Moreover, comprehensive experiments are conducted on publicly known face databases. All the results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Background: Immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM), a subgroup of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs), is characterized by severe proximal muscle weakness and prominent necrotic fibers but no infiltration of inflammatory cells. IMNM pathogenesis is unclear. This study investigated key biomarkers and potential pathways for IMNM using high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics technology. Methods: RNA sequencing was conducted in 18 IMNM patients and 10 controls. A combination of weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) and differentially expressed gene (DEG) analysis was conducted to identify IMNM-related DEGs. Feature genes were screened out by employing the proteinprotein interaction (PPI) network, support vector machine-recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE), and least absolute shrinkage selection operator (LASSO). Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRTPCR) was performed to verify their differential expression, and the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to evaluate their diagnostic efficiency. Functional enrichment analysis was applied to reveal the hidden functions of feature genes. Furthermore, 28 immune cell abundance patterns in IMNM samples were measured. Results: We identified 193 IMNM-related DEGs that were aberrantly upregulated in the IMNM population and were closely associated with immune-inflammatory responses, regulation of skeletal and cardiac muscle contraction, and lipoprotein metabolism. With the help of the PPI network and the LASSO and SVM-RFE algorithms, three feature genes, LTK, MYBPH, and MYL4, were identified and further confirmed by qRTPCR. ROC curves among IMNM, dermatomyositis (DM), inclusion body myositis (IBM), and polymyositis (PM) samples validated the LTK and MYL4 genes as IMNM-specific feature markers. In addition, all three genes had a notable association with the autophagylysosome pathway and immune-inflammatory responses. Ultimately, IMNM displayed a marked immune-cell infiltrative microenvironment. The most significant correlation was found between CD4 T cells, CD8 T cells, macrophages, natural killer (NK) cells, and dendritic cells (DCs). Conclusions: LTK, MYBPH, and MYL4 were identified as potential key molecules for IMNM and are believed to play a role in the autophagylysosome pathway and muscle inflammation.

Rapid urbanization has profoundly impacted social and environmental systems. China is the world’s largest developing country. Projecting future urban expansion in China is critical to alleviate any adverse impacts and achieve sustainable development goals. However, the existing national-scale urban expansion simulations at low or medium resolutions produce significant distortions in urban spatial patterns, limiting the utility of future projections. High-resolution simulation of urban expansion is challenging on a large scale owing to high computational demands. In this study, we used a high-performance cellular automata model (Tensor-FLUS) to simulate the urban expansion of China from 2015 to 2050, at 30 m spatial resolution, under shared socioeconomic pathways. The high-resolution (30 m) urban expansion simulations preserve greater spatial details and avoid 34.07–37.60% underestimation of the urban area, compared with simulation at 1 km resolution. The environmental impact assessments revealed that future urban expansion mainly encroaches on cropland (88.00–88.29%), with a greater likelihood of occupying productive cropland, placing substantial pressure on food production. Although the proportion of occupied natural land is relatively small (11.32–11.60%), newly expanded urban areas will tend to consume woodland and grassland of high ecological value, leading to profound impacts on the ecosystem. In general, the produced high-resolution future simulations can reduce the uncertainty of environmental impact assessment at the national scale. Furthermore, it can provide consistent projection data for research at the provincial or metropolitan scales to support urban planning and local climate change mitigation.

Abstract Purpose To analyze the diagnostic value of placenta three-dimensional (3D) energy blood flow parameters combined with maternal serum AFP, β-hCG, sFlt-1 and CK levels for PA. Methods 30 pregnant women with PA and 30 pregnant women with normal placenta were randomly selected in the Affiliated Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Nantong University from January 2021 to December 2021. Thereafter, the 3D energy ultrasound was applied to detect the placenta VI, FI and VFI. Abstract Background The current study set out to identify the miRNA-mRNA regulatory networks that influence the radiosensitivity in esophageal cancer based on the The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases. Methods Firstly, esophageal cancer-related miRNA-seq and mRNA-seq data were retrieved from the TCGA database, and the mRNA dataset of esophageal cancer radiotherapy was downloaded from the GEO database to analyze the differential expressed miRNAs (DEmiRNAs) and mRNAs (DEmRNAs) in radiosensitive and radioresistant samples, followed by the construction of the miRNA-mRNA regulatory network and Gene Ontology and KEGG enrichment analysis. Additionally, a prognostic risk model was constructed, and its accuracy was evaluated by means of receiver operating characteristic analysis. Results A total of 125 DEmiRNAs and 42 DEmRNAs were closely related to the radiosensitivity in patients with esophageal cancer. Based on 47 miRNA-mRNA interactions, including 21 miRNAs and 21 mRNAs, the miRNA-mRNA regulatory network was constructed. The prognostic risk model based on 2 miRNAs (miR-132-3p and miR-576-5p) and 4 mRNAs (CAND1, ZDHHC23, AHR, and MTMR4) could accurately predict the prognosis of esophageal cancer patients. Finally, it was verified that miR-132-3p/CAND1/ZDHHC23 and miR-576-5p/AHR could affect the radiosensitivity in esophageal cancer. Conclusion Our study demonstrated that miR-132-3p/CAND1/ZDHHC23 and miR-576-5p/AHR were critical molecular pathways related to the radiosensitivity of esophageal cancer.

Seed priming has become a practical pre-sowing strategy to deal with abiotic stresses. This study aims to explore the effects of polyethylene glycol (PEG) priming on seed germination and seedling growth of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi under salt stress. Regardless of seed priming, salt stress significantly inhibited the seed germination and seedling growth of S. baicalensis. PEG priming significantly alleviates the inhibitory effects of salt stress on seed germination and seedling growth when compared to non-priming and water priming. Among all treatments, PEG priming exhibited the highest germination rate, germination potential, seed vigor index, fresh weight, dry weight, and plant length; the highest contents of proline, soluble sugar, and soluble protein; the highest K+/Na+ ratio and relative water content; the highest antioxidant activities and contents; but the lowest H2O2, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and relative electrical conductivity in response to salt stress. In addition, PEG priming had the highest transcript levels of antioxidant-related genes among all treatments under NaCl stress. Taken together, the results demonstrated that seed priming with PEG could be recommended as an effective practice to enhance the germination and early seedling growth of S. baicalensis under saline conditions.

An Mw 6.8 earthquake occurred in Luding County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, on 5 September 2022. This seismic event triggered numerous coseismic geohazards in the seismic zone. In this study, the ascending- and descending-track synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images observed by the Sentinel-1A satellite are utilized to extract the coseismic surface deformation of the Luding earthquake. Subsequently, a faulting model is estimated based on the elastic dislocation theory, under the constraint of the InSAR observation. Additionally, the POT technique was employed to detect coseismic geohazards. High-spatial-resolution optical remote sensing images served to validate the reliability of the detection results. The coseismic interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) deformation field indicated a maximum deformation of ~190 mm and ~140 mm along the ascending and descending tracks, respectively. The estimated best-fitting faulting model suggests that the optimal seismogenic fault strike and dip angles are 169.3° and 70°, respectively. The fault slip predominantly exhibits left-lateral strike-slip characteristics and is concentrated at depths of 3–12 km. The estimated maximum fault slip was 2.67 m, occurring at a depth of 7 km. The pixel offset tracking (POT) result derived from the pre- and post-earthquake SAR images found a total of 245 medium- to large-scale coseismic geohazards, with a verification rate from optical images exceeding 64%. The distribution of these geohazards is notably dense within the significant fault rupture segment. Geohazards on the fault hanging wall are densely packed, whereas landslides along the Dadu River’s fault footwall are also notably frequent.

Achieving a balance between spectral resolution and spatial resolution in multi-spectral remote sensing images is challenging due to physical constraints. Consequently, pan-sharpening technology was developed to address this challenge. While significant progress was recently achieved in deep-learning-based pan-sharpening techniques, most existing deep learning approaches face two primary limitations: (1) convolutional neural networks (CNNs) struggle with long-range dependency issues, and (2) significant detail loss during deep network training. Moreover, despite these methods’ pan-sharpening capabilities, their generalization to full-sized raw images remains problematic due to scaling disparities, rendering them less practical. To tackle these issues, we introduce in this study a multi-spectral remote sensing image fusion network, termed TAMINet, which leverages a two-stream coordinate attention mechanism and multi-detail injection. Initially, a two-stream feature extractor augmented with the coordinate attention (CA) block is employed to derive modal-specific features from low-resolution multi-spectral (LRMS) images and panchromatic (PAN) images. This is followed by feature-domain fusion and pan-sharpening image reconstruction. Crucially, a multi-detail injection approach is incorporated during fusion and reconstruction, ensuring the reintroduction of details lost earlier in the process, which minimizes high-frequency detail loss. Finally, a novel hybrid loss function is proposed that incorporates spatial loss, spectral loss, and an additional loss component to enhance performance. The proposed methodology’s effectiveness was validated through experiments on WorldView-2 satellite images, IKONOS, and QuickBird, benchmarked against current state-of-the-art techniques. Experimental findings reveal that TAMINet significantly elevates the pan-sharpening performance for large-scale images, underscoring its potential to enhance multi-spectral remote sensing image quality.

Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a group of neurodegenerative diseases with genetic and clinical heterogeneity characterized by spasticity and weakness of the lower limbs. It includes four genetic inheritance forms: autosomal dominant inheritance (AD), autosomal recessive inheritance (AR), X-linked inheritance, and mitochondrial inheritance. To date, more than 82 gene loci have been found to cause HSP, and SPG15 (ZFYVE26) is one of the most common autosomal recessive hereditary spastic paraplegias (ARHSPs) with a thin corpus callosum (TCC), presents with early cognitive impairment and slowly progressive leg weakness. Here, we reported a homozygous pathogenic variant in ZFYVE26. A 19-year-old Chinese girl was admitted to our hospital presenting with a 2-year progressive bilateral leg spasticity and weakness; early cognitive impairment; corpus callosum dysplasia; chronic neurogenic injury of the medulla oblongata supplied muscles; and bilateral upper and lower limbs on electromyogram (EMG). Based on these clinical and electrophysiological features, HSP was suspected. Exome sequencing of the family was performed by high-throughput sequencing, and an analysis of the patient showed a ZFYVE26 NM_015346: c.7111dupA p.(M2371Nfs*51) homozygous mutation. This case reported a new ZFYVE26 pathogenic variant, which was different from the SPG15 gene mutation reported earlier.

IntroductionObservational studies suggested that diabetes mellitus [type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)], multiple sclerosis (MS), and migraine are associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the causal link has not been fully elucidated. Thus, we aim to assess the causal link between T1DM, T2DM, MS, and migraine with the risk of AD using a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study.MethodsGenetic instruments were identified for AD, T1DM, T2DM, MS, and migraine respectively from genome-wide association study. MR analysis was conducted mainly using the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method.ResultsThe result of IVW method demonstrated that T2DM is causally associated with risk of AD (OR: 1.237, 95% CI: 1.099–1.391, P: 0.0003). According to the IVW method, there is no causal association between TIDM, MS, migraine, and the risk of AD (all p value > 0.05). Here we show, there is a causal link between T2DM and the risk of AD.ConclusionThese findings highlight the significance of active monitoring and prevention of AD in T2DM patients. Further studies are required to actively search for the risk factors of T2DM combined with AD, explore the markers that can predict T2DM combined with AD, and intervene and treat early.

Fusarium wilt of banana (FWB) caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race 4 (Foc TR4), poses a serious problem for sustainable banana production. Biological control is one of the effective measures to control this destructive disease. High-throughput sequencing of soil microorganisms could significantly improve the efficiency and accuracy of biocontrol strain screening. In this study, the soil microbial diversity of six main banana-producing areas in Yunnan was sequenced by Illumina Miseq platform. The outcome of this study showed the genus of Chujaibacter, Bacillus, and Sphingomonas were significantly enriched in microorganism community composition. Further correlation analysis with soil pathogen (Foc TR4) content showed that Bacillus was significantly negatively correlated with pathogen content. Therefore, we isolated and identified Bacillus from the disease-suppressive soils, and obtained a B. velezensis strain YN1910. In vitro and pot experiments showed that YN1910 had a significant control effect (78.43–81.76%) on banana Fusarium wilt and had a significant growth promotion effect on banana plants.

Flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) behavior of X65 steel gradual contraction pipe in high CO2 partial pressure environments was investigated by in situ dynamic high pressure electrochemical measurements with Ag/AgCl reference electrode in FAC loop and microscopic characterization analysis. The corrosion rates in dynamic high CO2 partial pressure environments are obviously enhanced compared with those in dynamic atmospheric pressure and static high pressure environments. The FAC mechanism at gradual contraction pipe in high pressure environments exhibits significant distinction from that in atmospheric pressure environments. The variation of corrosion rates is associated with the hydrodynamics at gradual contraction pipe. The presence of high CO2 partial pressure under fluid flowing accelerates rupture of corrosion product scales.

Abstract The blooming requirement of high‐performance energy storage systems has aroused the thirst for advanced energy storage materials. As a high capacity anode, however, the application of NiO nanoparticles (NiO NPs) is hindered by intractable issues of dramatic volume change, intrinsic low electronic conductivity, and severe aggregation tendency during lithiation/delithiation. Herein, a polydopamine (PDA) assisted bi‐functionalization strategy for fabricating of PDA@NiO‐CNT composites for fast and durable lithium storage is reported. In this composite, CNTs intertwine to form a network to ensure sufficient electrolyte infiltration and act as a highly conductive system to motivate fast charge transmission. The strong binding affinity of PDA facilitates bonding between NiO NPs and CNTs, which not only forms uniform and flexible PDA coating but also ensures homogeneous distribution of NiO NPs on CNTs network. Therefore, the bi‐functional modified PDA@NiO‐CNT electrode possesses high conductivity, alleviates volume change and aggregation of NiO NPs during cycling, achieves a reversible capacity of 1326 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1, a rate capability of 215 mAh g−1 at 2000 mA g−1 and a cycling stability with 78% capacity retention after 250 cycles. This bi‐functional modification approach manifests its prospective potential for architecting other electrode materials toward high‐performance electrochemical devices.

BackgroundAlthough more and more clinical studies have shown that acupuncture as an auxiliary combined with Western medicine is effective in the treatment of patients with epilepsy, no systematic reviews of acupuncture as a treatment for epilepsy have been published. Hence, we conducted this meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of acupuncture treatment on patients with epilepsy.MethodsThis study retrieved randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture treatment for epilepsy from various electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese BioMedical Literature Database, and Wangfang database. These studies evaluated the effectiveness of acupuncture as an auxiliary treatment combined with Western medicine for patients with epilepsy. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions.ResultsA total of 17 RCTs involving a total of 1,389 participants were included. Triglyceride and glucose levels are important indicators for determining metabolic syndrome, one of the leading public-health burdens worldwide. Drosophila melanogaster is an ideal model for investigating metabolic diseases because it has 70% homology to human genes and its regulatory mechanism of energy metabolism homeostasis is highly similar to that of mammals. However, traditional analytical methods of triglyceride and glucose are time-consuming, laborious, and costly. In this study, a simple, practical, and reliable near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic analysis method was developed for the rapid determination of glucose and triglyceride levels in an in vivo model of metabolic disorders using Drosophila induced by high-sugar or high-fat diets. The partial least squares (PLS) model was constructed and optimized using different spectral regions and spectral pretreatment methods. The overall results had satisfactory prediction performance. For Drosophila induced by high-sugar diets, the correlation coefficient (RP) and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) were 0.919 and 0.228 mmoL gprot−1 for triglyceride and 0.913 and 0.143 mmoL gprot−1 for glucose respectively; for Drosophila induced by high-fat diets, the RP and RMSEP were 0.871 and 0.097 mmoL gprot−1 for triglyceride and 0.853 and 0.154 mmoL gprot−1 for glucose, respectively. This study demonstrated the potential of using NIR spectroscopy combined with PLS in the determination of triglyceride and glucose levels in Drosophila, providing a rapid and effective method for monitoring metabolite levels during disease development and a possibility for evaluating metabolic diseases in humans in clinical practice.

Sweet syndrome (SS) is an uncommon inflammatory disease that involves painful skin, edematous, red papules, plaques, or nodules often accompanied by fever and leukocytosis. SS has three subtypes, including classical, malignant-tumor associated, and drug-induced SS (DISS). Patients with DISS have clear histories of recent drug exposure. The incidence of SS is high in hematological malignancy but rare in lymphomas. Glucocorticoid treatment is the recommended treatment for all subtypes of SS. This case study describes a male patient who had a history of sALCL(Systemic anaplastic large cell lymphoma) and was treated with multiple cycles of monoclonal-antibody (mAb) therapy. They also received the G-CSF injection at the site where skin lesions later developed. They met the diagnosis criteria for DISS, which was considered to be caused by the G-CSF injection. In addition, BV(Brentuximab vedotin) administration might predispose them to DISS. This case illustrates the first reported SS during the lymphoma treatment, with rare clinical presentations of local crater-like suppurative skin lesions. This case expands the available literature on SS and hematologic neoplasms and reminds clinicians to promptly recognize and diagnose SS to minimize patient morbidity and long-term sequelae.

Introduction: Emodin (EMO), a natural derivative of the anthraquinone family mainly extracted from rhubarb (Rheum palmatum), has previously been demonstrated to possess superior anti-inflammatory properties from a single target or pathway. In order to explore the underlying mechanism of action of EMO against rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a network pharmacology approach was employed.Methods: A gene expression profile from GSE55457 available from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was used to identify the targets of EMO action. Further, single cell RNA sequencing data from GEO database of RA patients (GSE159117) were downloaded and analysed. To further investigate the anti-RA effect of EMO on MH7A cells, the expression of IL-6 and IL-1β were monitored. Finally, RNA-seq analyses were conducted on synovial fibroblasts from EMO-treated.Result: We screened the key targets of EMO against RA using network pharmacology methods, including HMGB1, STAT1, EGR1, NR3C1, EGFR, MAPK14, CASP3, CASP1, IL4, IL13, IKBKB and FN1, and their reliability was verified using ROC curve. Single-cell RNA sequencing data analysis showed that these core target proteins mainly played a role by modulating monocytes. The anti-RA effect of EMO was further verified with MH7A cells, which showed that EMO could block cell differentiation and reduce the expression of IL-6 and IL-1β. WB experiments confirmed that EMO could affect the expression of COX2, HMBG1 and the phosphorylation of p38. Finally, sequencing of synovial fibroblasts from rats treated with EMO showed consistent results with those predicted and verified, further proving the anti-inflammatory effect of EMO.Conclusion: Our research shows that EMO inhibits inflammatory response of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by targeting HMGB1, STAT1, EGR1, NR3C1, EGFR, MAPK14, CASP3, CASP1, IL4, IL13, IKBKB, FN1 and Monocytes/macrophages.
