The drinking water supply on barrier islands largely depends on freshwater lenses, which are also highly relevant for island ecosystems. The freshwater lens presented in this study is currently developing (since the 1970s) below the very young eastern part of the North Sea barrier island Spiekeroog, the so-called “Ostplate.” Due to the absence of coastal protection measures, formation, shape, and extent of the freshwater lens below the Ostplate are unaffected by human activities but exposed to dynamic changes, e.g., geomorphological variations and storm tides. The main aim of this paper was to reconstruct the evolution of the freshwater lens over several decades in order to explain the present-day groundwater salinity distribution. In addition, the study assessed the impact of geomorphological variations and storm tides on the freshwater lens formation. Detailed field observations were combined with a transient 2-D density-dependent modeling approach. Both field observations and simulations show an asymmetric freshwater lens after ~42 years of formation, whereby the horizontal extent is limited by the elevated dune area. The simulations indicate that the young freshwater lens has nearly reached quasi-steady-state conditions mainly due to the continuous mixing with seawater infiltrating during storm tides, which inhibits further growth of the freshwater lens on the narrow island. The findings further show that (i) a neglection of storm tides results in a significant overestimation of the freshwater lens extent, and (ii) the modeled present groundwater salinity distribution and shape of the freshwater lens are predominantly determined by the position and extent of the elevated dune area at the past ~20 years. Hence, annual storm tides have to be directly implemented into numerical models to explain the groundwater salinity distribution and the extent of young freshwater lenses located in highly dynamic tidal environments.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is the main energy source for marine heterotrophic microorganisms, but a small fraction of DOC resists microbial degradation and accumulates in the ocean. The reason behind this recalcitrance is unknown. We test whether the long-term stability of DOC requires the existence of structurally refractory molecules, using a mechanistic model comprising a diverse network of microbe-substrate interactions. Model experiments reproduce three salient observations, even when all DOC compounds are equally degradable: (i) >15% of an initial DOC pulse resists degradation, but is consumed by microbes if concentrated, (ii) the modelled deep-sea DOC reaches stable concentrations of 30–40 mmolC/m3, and (iii) the mean age of deep-sea DOC is several times the age of deep water with a wide range from <100 to >10,000 years. We conclude that while structurally-recalcitrant molecules exist, they are not required in the model to explain either the amount or longevity of DOC.

Gas exchange across the air-water interface is strongly influenced by the uppermost water layer (<1mm), the sea-surface microlayer (SML). However, a clear understanding about how the distinct physicochemical and biological properties of the SML affect gas exchange is lacking. We used an automatic microprofiler with Clark-type microsensors to measure small-scale profiles of dissolved oxygen in the upper 5 cm of the water column in a laboratory tank filled with natural seawater. We aimed to link changing oxygen concentrations and profiles with the metabolic activity of plankton and neuston, i.e., SML-dwelling organisms, in our artificial, low-turbulence set-up during diel cycles. We observed that temporal changes of the oxygen concentration in near surface water (5 cm depth) could not be explained by diffusive loss of oxygen, but by planktonic activity. Interestingly, no influence of strong neuston activity on oxygen gradients at the air-water interface was detectable.

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is a ubiquitous source of meteoric fresh groundwater and recirculating seawater to the coastal ocean. Due to the hidden distribution of SGD, as well as the hydraulic- and stratigraphy-driven spatial and temporal heterogeneities, one of the biggest challenges to date is the correct assessment of SGD-driven constituent fluxes. Here, we present results from a 3-dimensional seasonal sampling campaign of a shallow subterranean estuary in a high-energy, meso-tidal beach, Spiekeroog Island, Northern Germany. We determined beach topography and analyzed physico-chemical and biogeochemical parameters such as salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, Fe(II) and dissolved organic matter fluorescence (FDOM). Overall, the highest gradients in pore water chemistry were found in the cross-shore direction. In particular, a strong physico-chemical differentiation between the tidal high water and low water line was found and reflected relatively stable in- and exfiltrating conditions in these areas. Contrastingly, in between, the pore water compositions in the existing foreshore ridge and runnel system were very heterogeneous on a spatial and temporal scale. The reasons for this observation may be the strong morphological changes that occur throughout the entire year, which affect the exact locations and heights of the ridge and runnel structures and associated flow paths. Further, seasonal changes in temperature and inland hydraulic head, and the associated effect on microbial mediated redox reactions likely overprint these patterns. In the long-shore direction the pore water chemistry varied less than the along the cross-shore direction. Variation in long-shore direction was probably occurring due to topography changes of the ridge-runnel structure and a physical heterogeneity of the sediment, which produced non-uniform groundwater flow conditions. Astelia pumila (G.Forst.) Gaudich. (Asteliaceae, Asparagales) is a major element of West Patagonian cushion peat bog vegetation. With the aim to identify appropriate chloroplast markers for the use in a phylogeographic study, the complete chloroplast genomes of five A. pumila accessions from almost the entire geographical range of the species were assembled and screened for variable positions. The chloroplast genome sequence was obtained via a mapping approach, using Eustrephus latifolius (Asparagaceae) as a reference. The chloroplast genome of A. pumila varies in length from 158,215 bp to 158,221 bp, containing a large single copy region of 85,981–85,983 bp, a small single copy region of 18,182–18,186 bp and two inverted repeats of 27,026 bp. Genome annotation predicted a total of 113 genes, including 30 tRNA and four rRNA genes. Sequence comparisons revealed a very low degree of intraspecific genetic variability, as only 37 variable sites (18 indels, 18 single nucleotide polymorphisms, one 3-bp mutation)—most of them autapomorphies—were found among the five assembled chloroplast genomes. A Maximum Likelihood analysis, based on whole chloroplast genome sequences of several Asparagales accessions representing six of the currently recognized 14 families (sensu APG IV), confirmed the phylogenetic position of A. pumila. The chloroplast genome of A. pumila is the first to be reported for a member of the astelioid clade (14 genera with c. 215 species), a basally branching group within Asparagales.

The role of Na+/K+-pumps in activity-dependent synaptic plasticity has been described in both vertebrates and invertebrates. Here, we provide evidence that the Na+/K+-pump is also involved in activity-dependent non-synaptic cellular plasticity in leech sensory neurons. We show that the resting membrane potential (RMP) of T cells hyperpolarizes in response to repeated somatic current injection, while at the same time their spike count (SC) and the input resistance (IR) increase. Our Hodgkin–Huxley-type neuron model, adjusted to physiological T cell properties, suggests that repetitive action potential discharges lead to increased Na+/K+-pump activity, which then hyperpolarizes the RMP. In consequence, a slow, non-inactivating current decreases, which is presumably mediated by voltage-dependent, low-threshold potassium channels. Closing of these putative M-type channels due to hyperpolarization of the resting potential increases the IR of the cell, leading to a larger number of spikes. By this mechanism, the response behavior switches from rapidly to slowly adapting spiking. These changes in spiking behavior also effect other T cells on the same side of the ganglion, which are connected via a combination of electrical and chemical synapses. An increased SC in the presynaptic T cell results in larger postsynaptic responses (PRs) in the other T cells. However, when the number of elicited presynaptic spikes is kept constant, the PR does not change. These results suggest that T cells change their responses in an activity-dependent manner through non-synaptic rather than synaptic plasticity. These changes might act as a gain-control mechanism. Depending on the previous activity, this gain could scale the relative impacts of synaptic inputs from other mechanoreceptors, versus the spike responses to tactile skin stimulation. Lagrangian observations are important for the understanding of complex transport patterns of floating macroscopic litter items at the ocean surface. Satellite-tracked drifters and numerical models are an important source of information relevant to transport processes as well as distribution patterns of floating marine litter (FML) on a regional to global scale. Sub-mesoscale processes in coastal and estuarine systems have an enormous impact on pathways and accumulation zones of FML and are yet to be fully understood. Here we present a state-of-the-art, low-cost and robust design of a satellite-tracked drifter applicable in studying complex pathways and sub-mesoscale dynamics of floating litter in tidally influenced coastal and estuarine systems. It is compact, lightweight <5 kg, capable of refloating, easily recovered and modified. The drifter motion resolves currents of the ocean surface layer (top 0.5 m layer) taking into account wind induced motions. We further showcase findings from seven of our custom-made drifters deployed from RV Heincke and RV Senckenberg in the German Bight during spring and autumn 2017. Drifter velocities were computed from high resolved drifter position data and compared to local wind field observations. It was noted that the net transport of the drifters in areas far away from the coast was dominated by wind-driven surface currents, 1% of the wind speed, whereas the transport pattern in coastal areas was mainly overshadowed by local small-scale processes like tidal jet currents, interactions with a complex shoreline and fronts generated by riverine freshwater plumes.

The emergence of bacterial pathogens that are resistant to clinical antibiotics poses an increasing risk to human health. An important reservoir from which bacterial pathogens can acquire resistance is the human gut microbiota. However, thus far, a substantial fraction of the gut microbiota remains uncultivated and has been little-studied with respect to its resistance reservoir-function. Here, we aimed to isolate yet uncultivated resistant gut bacteria by a targeted approach. Therefore, faecal samples from 20 intensive care patients who had received the prophylactic antibiotic treatment selective digestive decontamination (SDD), i.e. tobramycin, polymyxin E, amphotericin B and cefotaxime, were inoculated anaerobically on porous aluminium oxide chips placed on top of poor and rich agar media, including media supplemented with the SDD antibiotics. Biomass growing on the chips was analysed by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, showing large inter-individual differences in bacterial cultivability, and enrichment of a range of taxonomically diverse operational taxonomic units (OTUs). Furthermore, growth of Ruminococcaceae (2 OTUs), Enterobacteriaceae (6 OTUs) and Lachnospiraceae (4 OTUs) was significantly inhibited by the SDD antibiotics. Strains belonging to 16 OTUs were candidates for cultivation to pure culture as they shared ≤95% sequence identity with the closest type strain and had a relative abundance of ≥2%. Six of these OTUs were detected on media containing SDD antibiotics, and as such were prime candidates to be studied regarding antibiotic resistance. One of these six OTUs was obtained in pure culture using targeted isolation. This novel strain was resistant to the antibiotics metrodinazole and imipenem. It was initially classified as member of the Ruminococcaceae, though later it was found to share 99% nucleotide identity with the recently published Sellimonas intestinalis BR72T. Marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a complex mixture of chemical compounds. At 750 Pg C, it is one of the biggest pools of reduced carbon on Earth. It has been proposed that the diversity of DOM is responsible for its recalcitrance. We hypothesize that the chemodiversity of marine DOM is a reflection of the chemodiversity of bacterial exometabolomes. To test this, we incubated two model strains of the Roseobacter group; Phaeobacter inhibens and Dinoroseobacter shibae in pure culture using three different simple organic compounds as sole carbon sources (glutamate, glucose, and acetate and succinate for P. inhibens and D. shibae, respectively). The exometabolome of the model organisms was characterized using Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) and ecological diversity measures. We detected thousands of molecular masses in the exometabolomes of P. inhibens and D. shibae (21,105 and 9,386, respectively), reflecting the capability of single bacterial strains to diversify simple organic compounds. The chemical composition of the exometabolomes changed with growth phase and also differed according to the strain incubated and the utilized substrate. We mimicked a higher diversity of substrates, bacterial species and heterogeneous growth (different growth phases) to approach the complexity of natural environments, by computationally creating combinations of detected exometabolomes. We compared the chemodiversity of these combinations, indicative for chemodiversity of freshly produced microbial DOM to that of refractory DOM from one of the oldest oceanic water masses (North Equatorial Pacific Intermediate Water). Some combinations of exometabolomes showed higher richness than the deep ocean refractory DOM, and all the combinations showed higher functional diversity. Interaural time differences (ITD) and interaural level differences (ILD) are physical cues that enable the auditory system to pinpoint the position of a sound source in space. This ability is crucial for animal communication and predator-prey interactions. The barn owl has evolved an exceptional sense of hearing and shows abilities of sound localisation that outperform most other species. So far, behavioural studies in the barn owl often used reflexive responses to investigate aspects of sound localisation. Furthermore, they predominately probed the higher frequencies of the owl’s hearing range (> 3 kHz). In the present study we used a Go/NoGo paradigm to measure the barn owl’s behavioural sound localisation acuity (expressed as the Minimum Audible Angle, MAA) as a function of stimulus type (narrow-band noise centred at 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 and 8000 Hz, and broad-band noise) and sound source position. We found significant effects of both stimulus type and sound source position on the barn owls’ MAA. The MAA improved with increasing stimulus frequency, from 14° at 500 Hz to 6° at 8000 Hz. The smallest MAA of 4° was found for broadband noise stimuli. Comparing different sound source positions revealed smaller MAAs for frontal compared to lateral stimulus presentation, irrespective of stimulus type. These results are consistent with both the known variations in physical ITDs and variation in the width of neural ITD tuning curves with azimuth and frequency. Physical and neural characteristics combine to result in better spatial acuity for frontal compared to lateral sounds and reduced localisation acuity at lower frequencies.

Spin wave logic circuits using quantum oscillations of spins (magnons) as carriers of information have been proposed for next generation computing with reduced energy demands and the benefit of easy parallelization. Current realizations of magnonic devices have micrometer sized patterns. Here we demonstrate the feasibility of biogenic nanoparticle chains as the first step to truly nanoscale magnonics at room temperature. Our measurements on magnetosome chains (ca 12 magnetite crystals with 35 nm particle size each), combined with micromagnetic simulations, show that the topology of the magnon bands, namely anisotropy, band deformation, and band gaps are determined by local arrangement and orientation of particles, which in turn depends on the genotype of the bacteria. Our biomagnonic approach offers the exciting prospect of genetically engineering magnonic quantum states in nanoconfined geometries. By connecting mutants of magnetotactic bacteria with different arrangements of magnetite crystals, novel architectures for magnonic computing may be (self-) assembled.

The Peruvian upwelling system (PUS) is among the most productive regions in the ocean, with high rates of primary production and an intense oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). The main perturbation of this system is associated to “El Niño” (EN), which affects water mass distribution and reduces primary production. Previous studies in the PUS provided first insights into the dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM), but high-resolution studies involving the molecular characterization of the DOM pool to reveal the processes that affect the carbon cycle in this highly productive system are lacking. We characterized the molecular composition of solid-phase extractable DOM (SPE-DOM) in the coastal upwelling system off Central Peru and linked it to specific processes that affect DOM cycling. Seasonal sampling (April, August, and December) was carried out off Central Peru (12°S) during 2015, a low productivity year marked by EN conditions. The DOM molecular composition was obtained via Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). Solid-phase extractable dissolved organic carbon (SPE-DOC) concentrations showed significant differences (p < 0.05) between the water masses present off central Peru. In order to explore if changes in SPE-DOC concentrations were the result of water mass mixing, we applied a conservative mixing (CM) model. The model revealed a non-conservative behavior of SPE-DOC and allowed us to identify two distinct groups of samples with increased and decreased SPE-DOC concentrations, respectively, and one group of samples inside the CM range. Differences in environmental parameters characterizing these groups were in accordance with respective processes associated to production and degradation of SPE-DOC. The trends observed for molecular parameters revealed the imprint of processes related to DOM production and DOM degradation, both biotic (microbial degradation) and abiotic (photodegradation). Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis and major physiological differences indicate two distinct sublineages within the genus Azoarcus: the Azoarcus evansii lineage, comprising Azoarcusevansii (type strain KB740T=DSM 6898T=CIP 109473T=NBRC 107771T), Azoarcusbuckelii (type strain U120T=DSM 14744T=LMG 26916T), Azoarcusanaerobius (type strain LuFRes1T=DSM 12081T=LMG 30943T), Azoarcustolulyticus (type strain Tol-4T=ATCC 51758T=CIP 109470T), Azoarcustoluvorans (type strain Td21T=ATCC 700604T=DSM 15124T) and Azoarcustoluclasticus (type strain MF63T=ATCC 700605T), and the Azoarcus indigens lineage, comprising Azoarcusindigens (type strain VB32T=ATCC 51398T=LMG 9092T), Azoarcus communis (type strain SWub3T=ATCC 51397T=LMG 9095T) and Azoarcusolearius (type strain DQS-4T=BCRC 80407T=KCTC 23918T=LMG 26893T). Az. evansii lineage members have remarkable anaerobic degradation capacities encompassing a multitude of alkylbenzenes, aromatic compounds and monoterpenes, often involving novel biochemical reactions. In contrast, Az. indigens lineage members are diazotrophic endophytes lacking these catabolic capacities. It is proposed that species of the Az. evansii lineage should be classified in a novel genus, Aromatoleum gen. nov. Finally, based on the literature and new growth, DNA-DNA hybridization and proteomic data, the following five new species are proposed: Aromatoleum aromaticum sp. nov. (type strain EbN1T=DSM 19018T=LMG 30748T and strain pCyN1=DSM 19016=LMG 31004), Aromatoleum petrolei sp. nov. (type strain ToN1T=DSM 19019T=LMG 30746T), Aromatoleum bremense sp. nov. (type strain PbN1T=DSM 19017T=LMG 31005T), Aromatoleum toluolicum sp. nov. (type strain TT=DSM 19020T=LMG 30751T) and Aromatoleum diolicum sp. nov. (type strain 22LinT=DSM 15408T=LMG 30750T).

Here, we present the genome sequence and annotation of HV4-6-C5C, a bacterial strain isolated from a mesophilic two-stage laboratory-scale leach bed biogas reactor system. Strain HV4-6-C5C may represent a new genus of the family Bacteroidaceae and may have a key role in acidogenesis and acetogenesis steps during anaerobic biomass digestion.

Civic energy has developed to become a key driver of a transition of the energy system to a locally-sourced, renewables-based economy whereby individual civic energy initiatives exhibit highly diverse forms and agency characteristics. Together they challenge the incumbent corporate, fossil-based energy system and its underlying techno-economic paradigm. For civic energy to meet this challenge, we argue that the potential for process optimization needs to be systematically assessed and propose a civic energy process design as a continuous improvement process in order to address the need for professionalization and capture the synergies presented by process standardization. The resulting Civic Energy Cycle deploys elements of creative destruction to identify alternative value propositions. The Cycle comprises Initiation, Planning, Roll-Out, Refection and Adoption phases, and a total of eleven process stages that extend beyond standardized technical and business processes; in addition to economic process objectives, the targeted social-economic and community benefits play a key role in shaping the process. The civic energy process is presented as a social transition framework that makes the shift in energy patterns manageable and acts as a mechanism that serves community needs.

Wer im Biologieunterricht Umweltthemen unterrichten will, steht vor der didaktischen Herausforderung, Fachwissen und ethische Aspekte in ein reflektiertes Verhältnis zueinander zu bringen. Ein weiteres Problem besteht darin, dass Schüler fachliche Konzepte auch nach dem Unterricht nicht immer hinreichend verstehen, weil ihre vorunterrichtlichen Vorstellungen nicht berücksichtigt wurden. Dies ist der Ausgangspunkt der vorliegenden Studie, die auf dem Modell der Didaktischen Rekonstruktion basiert. Die Perspektiven von Wissenschaftlern und Lernenden zu zentralen Konzepten wie „biologisches Gleichgewicht“ und „Veränderungen“ werden inklusive ethischer Implikationen untersucht. In fünf didaktischen Leitlinien werden Konsequenzen für den Biologieunterricht erörtert, um ein angemessenes Naturverständnis zu vermitteln. Es wird empfohlen, Gleichgewichtsvorstellungen zum Thema des Unterrichts zu machen, um sie reflektieren zu können. Dazu werden geeignete unterrichtliche Inhalte vorgestellt, die auch die normative Dimension berücksichtigen. Zudem werden räumliche und zeitliche Perspektivenwechsel vorgeschlagen.

Die Potenzialanalyse dieser Arbeit bezieht sich auf das Niedrigtemperaturwärmepotenzial von versiegelten und unversiegelten städtischen Flächen, dass aufgrund der saisonalen solaren Strahlungseinwirkung generiert werden kann. Die über städtische Flächen absorbierte solare Strahlung erzeugt ein saisonales Wärmepotenzial innerhalb der städtischen Trag- und Bodenschichten. Meteorologische Faktoren beeinflussen das Stadtklima und folglich das Abkühlungs- und Erwärmungsverhalten von städtischen Oberflächen und Gebäudeflächen. Städte mit einer leitungsgebundenen Nahwärmeversorgung eignen sich besonders, um das generierte Niedrigtemperaturwärmepotenzial von versiegelten und unversiegelten städtischen Flächen. Aus den Ergebnissen dieser Arbeit sind Empfehlungen für die Regionalplanung und für die kommunale solare Stadtentwicklung abzuleiten. Die Ergebnisse der Potenzialanalyse zur Bereitstellung der Niedrigtemperaturwärme in städtischen Quartieren sind in Feld- und Parzellenversuchen oder städtischen Modellvorhaben praxisnah zu untersuchen und nachzuweisen.

Diese Arbeit untersucht die bio-optischen Bedingungen in fünf arktischen Küstensystemen in Grönland und Island. Diese Systeme unterscheiden sich in ihrer hydrographischen Struktur, welche sowohl die bio-optische Gegebenheiten als auch die biologischen Aktivitäten. Alle Systeme weisen nur geringe nicht organische SPM (SPMi) Konzentrationen auf. Ausnahmen bilden nur Stationen nahe Frischwasserzuflüsse und Schmelzwasser von Gletschern. Die CDOM Absorptionswerte waren in allen Systemen niedrig. Höhere Chl a Konzentrationen waren in der Vaigat und an zwei Stationen im Breiðafjörður zu beobachten. Die 1 % PAR Tiefe wird vom Chl a und SPMi Konzentrationen dominiert. Ein einfaches Modell wurde verwendet, um PAR in Abhängigkeit von unterschiedlichen Konzentrationen zu bestimmen. Bei den hyperspektralen Lichtfelddaten wird der Einfluss von CDOM bei niedrigen Wellenlängen deutlich. Bei der Modellierung mit Hydrolight haben sich größere Unterschiede zwischen Messung und Modell gezeigt.

The copepod Calanus finmarchicus has an ecological key position in the northern Atlantic pelagic food web and its life is characterized by diel and seasonal rhythmicity. Neither diel nor seasonal rhythmicity of C. finmarchicus are understood with regard to their mechanistic regulation. Endogenous clock systems are central in controlling rhythms in various terrestrial species, but have hardly been investigated in marine organisms. This thesis shows that C. finmarchicus possesses an endogenous circadian clock, that regulated 24h rhythms of gene expression, metabolic activity and vertical migration behavior. The thesis further suggests that clock-based day length measurement and an endogenous annual clock is involved in the regulation of seasonal rhythmicity. The findings on C. finmarchicus’ timing systems are further related to the extreme light conditions in polar environments, discussing potential effects of climate chance on the copepods rhythmicity and biology.

The sea-surface microlayer (SML) at the air-sea interface is a distinct, under-studied habitat compared to the subsurface and copepods, important components of ocean food webs, have developed key adaptations to exploit this niche. By using automated SML sampling, high-throughput sequencing and unmanned aerial vehicles, we report on the distribution and abundance of pontellid copepods in relation to the unique biophysicochemical signature of the SML. We found copepods in the SML even during high exposure to sun-derived ultraviolet radiation and their abundance was significantly correlated to increased algal biomass. We additionally investigated the significance of the pontellids’ blue pigmentation and found that the reflectance peak of the blue pigment matched the water-leaving spectral radiance of the ocean surface. This feature could reduce high visibility at the air-sea boundary and potentially provide camouflage of copepods from their predators.

Auditory nerve single-unit recordings were obtained from two groups of young barn owls (age, between posthatching days 11 and 86) in terminal experiments under two different anesthetic regimes: ketamine (6–11 mg/kg) plus xylazine (~2 mg/kg); or isoflurane (1–1.5%) in oxygen, delivered via artificial respiration. In a second series of minimally invasive experiments, auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) were recorded in the same four adult barn owls (Tyto alba; age, between 5 and 32 months) under three different anesthetic protocols: ketamine (10 mg/kg) plus xylazine (3 mg/kg), isoflurane (1–1.5%), and sevoflurane (2–3%) in carbogen. Finally, the ABR measurements on adult owls were repeated in terminal experiments including more invasive procedures such as artificial respiration and higher isoflurane dosage. The main finding was a significant deterioration of auditory sensitivity in barn owls under gas anesthesia, at the level of the auditory nerve (i.e., a very peripheral level of the auditory system). The effect was drastic in the young animals that experienced threshold elevations in auditory nerve single-unit responses of ≥20 dB. ABR thresholds assessed repeatedly in experiments on adult owls were also significantly higher under isoflurane and sevoflurane, on average by 7 and 15 dB, compared with ketamine/ xylazine. This difference already occurred with minimal dosages and was reversibly enlarged with increased isoflurane concentration. Finally, there was evidence for confounding detrimental effects associated with artificial respiration over many hours, which suggested oxygen toxicity.

Integrated coastal management (ICM) has been considered worldwide to be a suitable approach to realizing comprehensive schemes to protect or develop coastal regions. A complex regulatory system stretching from international to local levels provides a framework for ICM practices. This raises the question whether and to what extent ICM practices have been supported by legal and policy frameworks at the international and national levels in different settings in both developed and developing countries. This paper examines four case studies in Germany, Costa Rica, Mexico and South Africa. Two research methods were used. First, a document-based analysis was conducted in two parts: a literature review of the content of ICM, and a policy and law analysis of the jurisdictions of the four case studies and at the international level (i.e., treaties and declarations). Second, a qualitative analysis was conducted based on in-depth interviews involving 21 decision-makers representing all the case studies. With a view to enhance the effective use of international and national legal and policy instruments and their implementation in a more local site specific context, this study considers four principles currently guiding ICM practices: (i) incorporation of international instruments’ principles in national legal and policy frameworks, (ii) participation, (iii) sustainable development and (iv) monitoring. An I-P-S ((I) incorporation of international instruments’ principles in national frameworks, (P) participation (S) sustainable development) diagram is used for an integrative assessment of ICM and indicates directions for further improvements at the case study sites. The embeddedness of ICM into national legal and policy frameworks is a success factor for ICM, however, it is often limited due to a lack of implementation. Furthermore, ICM can easily be jeopardized if ICM is allocated a marginalized position.

We present results on the distribution of +Nd and [Nd] from the TAG hydrothermal vent field and adjacent locations collected during the GEOTRACES GA03 cruise in October 2011. Our results show that Nd isotopes directly below and above the plume do not significantly deviate fromaverage NADW(+Nd =−12.3±0.2).Within the plume, however, isotope values are shifted slightly toward more radiogenic values up to +Nd = −11.4. Interestingly at the same time a significant decrease in [Nd] along with rare earth element (REE) fractionation is observed, indicating enhanced scavenging within the plume despite the change in Nd isotopes. Elemental concentrations of Nd are reduced by 19.6– 18.5 pmol/kg, coinciding with the maximum increase of mantle derived helium (xs3He) from 0.203 to 0.675 fmol/kg, resulting in an average 1.8 pmol/kg decrease in [Nd] relative to an expected linear increase with depth. The inventory loss of Nd within the plume sums up to 614 nmoles/m2, or 6%, if a continuous increase of [Nd] with depth is assumed. Compared to BATS and the western adjacent station USGT11-14, the local inventory loss is even higher at 10%. The tight relationship of xs3He increase and [Nd] decrease allows us to estimate scavenging rates at TAG suggesting 40 mol/year are removed within the TAG plume. A global estimate using power output along ocean ridges yields an annual Nd removal of 3.44 × 106 mol/year, which is about 71% of riverine and dust flux combined or 6–8% of the estimated global flux of Nd into the ocean. The change in Nd isotopic composition of up to 0.7 more radiogenic +Nd values suggests an exchange process between hydrothermally derived particles and seawater in which during the removal process an estimated 1.1 mol/year of hydrothermal Nd is contributed to the seawater at the TAG site. This estimate is only 0.1% of the global Nd signal added to the ocean by boundary exchange processes at ocean margins, limiting the ability of changing the Nd isotopic composition on a global

We investigated the influence of solar radiation on biogeochemical parameters of the sea surface microlayer (SML), including the spectroscopic composition of FDOM, and biotic and abiotic parameters. We calculated the humification index, biological index, and recently produced material index from the ultraviolet spectra to characterize the dynamic environment of the SML. The humification index ranged from 4 to 14 in the SML and 14 to 22 in underlying water (ULW). An inverse relation for this index as a function of solar radiation was observed, indicating photochemical decomposition of complex molecules present in fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM). The biological index (along Leg 2) ranged from 1.0 to 2.0 for the SML and 1.0 to 1.5 for ULW. The index for recently produced material ranged from 0.25 to 0.8 for the SML and 0.5 to 1.0 for ULW. The FDOM enrichment process of the SML was influenced by the photochemical decomposition of highly aromatic-like fluorophores, as indicated by the calculated indices. Fluorescence intensity increased for humic C peaks (>0.5 Raman units) in the North Sea samples and for humic M peaks (>1.0 Raman units) for Jade Bay. Spearman analysis for FDOM enrichment in the SML as a function of PAR (for Leg 2) showed a weak positive correlation (Rho = 0.676, n = 11, p = 0.022). Abundance of small photoautotrophic cells (Rho = 0.782, n = 11, p = 0.045) and of bacteria (Rho = 0.746, n = 11, p = 0.0082) also showed a positive correlation as a function of PAR. Overall, we found positive trends between the intensity of available light and the response of the constituents within the SML, highlighting the role of the surface microlayer as a distinctive habitat characterized by unique photochemical processes.

Dinoroseobacter shibae is an aerobic anoxygenic phototroph and able to utilize light energy to support its aerobic energy metabolism. Since the cells can also grow anaerobically with nitrate and nitrite as terminal electron acceptor, we were interested in how the cells profit from photosynthesis during denitrification and what the steps of chemiosmotic energy conservation are. Therefore, we conducted proton translocation experiments and compared O2-, NO3-, and NO2- respiration during different light regimes and in the dark. We used wild type cells and transposon mutants with knocked-out nitrate- and nitrite- reductase genes (napA and nirS), as well as a mutant (ppsR) impaired in bacteriochlorophyll a synthesis. Light had a positive impact on proton translocation, independent of the type of terminal electron acceptor present. In the absence of an electron acceptor, however, light did not stimulate proton translocation. The light-driven add-on to proton translocation was about 1.4 H+/e- for O2 respiration and about 1.1 H+/e- for NO3- and NO2-. We could see that the chemiosmotic energy conservation during aerobic respiration involved proton translocation, mediated by the NADH dehydrogenase, the cytochrome bc1 complex, and the cytochrome c oxidase. During denitrification the last proton translocation step of the electron transport was missing, resulting in a lower H+/e- ratio during anoxia. Furthermore, we studied the type of light-harvesting and found that the cells were able to channel light from the green–blue spectrum most efficiently, while red light has only minor impact. This fits well with the depth profiles for D. shibae abundance in the ocean and the penetration depth of light with different wavelengths into the water column.

We present here parameterizations of particulate and phytoplankton absorption coefficients as functions of pigment concentrations (Tchla) in Sognefjord and Trondheimsfjord along the northwestern coast of Norway. The total particulate and non-algal optical densities were measured via quantitative filter technique (QFT) in a spectrophotometer with integrating sphere. The spectral parameter coefficients A(l) and E(l) of the power law describing variations of particulate and phytoplankton absorption coefficients as a function of Tchla, were not only different from those provided for open ocean case 1 waters, but also exhibited differences in the two fjords under investigation. Considering the influence of glacial meltwater leading to increased inorganic sediment load in Sognefjord we investigate differences in two different parameterizations, developed by excluding and including inner Sognefjord stations. Tchla are modelled to test the parameterizations and validated against data from the same cruise and that from a repeated campaign. Being less influenced by non-algal particles parameterizations performed well in Trondheimsfjord and yielded high coefficients of determination (R2) of modelled vs. measured Tchla. In Sognefjord, the modelled vs. measured Tchla resulted in better R2 with parameter coefficients developed excluding the inner-fjord stations influenced by glacial meltwater influx.
