Abstract

Topological photonics have led to the robust optical behavior of the device, which has solved the problem of the influence of manufacturing defects and perturbations on the device performance. Meanwhile, temporal coupled-mode theory (t-CMT) has been developed and applied widely. However, the t-CMT of cascaded coupling cavities (CCC) system and its corresponding high-order filter has yet to be established. Here the t-CMT of CCC system is established based on the existing t-CMT. By combining the CCC with the topological waveguides, a versatile design scheme of the high-order nonreciprocal add-drop filter (HONAF) is proposed. The relationship between coupling effect of cavities and transmission and filtering performance of HONAF is analyzed quantitatively, then a method to improve the transmission efficiency and quality factor of the filter is given. Based on the combination of gyromagnetic photonic crystals and decagonal Penrose-type photonic quasicrystals, a HONAF is proposed. The transmission and filtering performance of the HONAF are numerically analyzed, which verifies the consistency between the theoretical prediction and the numerical simulation. The t-CMT of CCC system established can be widely used in the coupled resonator optical waveguides and their related systems. The designed HONAF can also be applied and compatible to microwave communication system.

Abstract

Hundreds of thousands of genetic variants have been reported to cause severe monogenic diseases, but the probability that a variant carrier develops the disease (termed penetrance) is unknown for virtually all of them. Additionally, the clinical utility of common polygenetic variation remains uncertain. Using exome sequencing from 77,184 adult individuals (38,618 multi-ancestral individuals from a type 2 diabetes case-control study and 38,566 participants from the UK Biobank, for whom genotype array data were also available), we apply clinical standard-of-care gene variant curation for eight monogenic metabolic conditions. Rare variants causing monogenic diabetes and dyslipidemias display effect sizes significantly larger than the top 1% of the corresponding polygenic scores. Nevertheless, penetrance estimates for monogenic variant carriers average 60% or lower for most conditions. We assess epidemiologic and genetic factors contributing to risk prediction in monogenic variant carriers, demonstrating that inclusion of polygenic variation significantly improves biomarker estimation for two monogenic dyslipidemias.

156. Near-zero-sidelobe optical subwavelength asymmetric focusing lens with dual-layer metasurfaces

Abstract

The existing metasurfaces with ultrathin volume for asymmetric transmission were often constructed by metal with low efficiency in optical frequency, and could not realize the optical asymmetric transmission and focusing simultaneously. Although the acoustic asymmetric focusing in asymmetric focusing lens (AFL) was realized, the obtained focal point was accompanied by large sidelobe. To solve those problems, an AFL with dual-layer metasurfaces designed by using dielectric materials can realize optical asymmetric transmission and focusing simultaneously in this paper. Furtherly, through optimizing the design theory of AFL, the near-zero-sidelobe (NZS) focusing can be realized on the subwavelength scale. The NZS asymmetric focusing of the optimized AFL is effective in broadband, which is expected to possess tremendous potential in the optical micro-nano processing, quantum communication, optical micromanipulation, etc.

157. Frequency tunable topological edge states of two-dimensional honeycomb lattice photonic crystals

Abstract

In this paper, the photonic quantum spin Hall effect (PQSHE) is realized in dielectric two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice photonic crystal (PC) by stretching and shrinking the honeycomb unit cell. Combining two honeycomb lattice PCs with a common photonic band gap (PBG) but different band topologies can generate a topologically protected edge state at the combined junction. The topological edge states and their unidirectional transmission as the scatterers with triangular, pentagonal, and heptagonal shapes are researched. Meanwhile, the unidirectional transmission in an inverted {\Omega}-shaped waveguide with large bending angle is realized, and verifies the characteristics of the topological protection by adding different kind of defects. Moreover, the frequency varies significantly when changing the scatterers shape, which shows that the PC with various scatterers shape can tune the frequency range of the topological edge state significantly. In other words, it can adjust the frequency of unidirectional transmission and increase the adjustability of the topological edge state.

158. Non-Hermitian two-dimensional photonic crystal flat lens

Abstract

In this paper, a non-Hermitian two-dimensional photonic crystal flat lens is proposed. The negative refraction of the second band of photonic crystal is utilized to realize super-resolution imaging of the point source. Based on the principles of non-Hermitian systems, a negative imaginary part is introduced into the imaging frequency, in which case the imaging intensity and resolution are improved. The results indicate that the non-Hermitian system provides a new method to improve the imaging performance of the photonic crystal lens.

159. Interface states in the rectangular lattice photonic crystals with identical dielectric rods

Abstract

Interface states in photonic crystals (PCs) have attracted attention for the special properties, such as high transmission efficiency in bend waveguides, and their generation related to the topological phase. Previous works on interface states in PCs were mainly based on the square lattice, the honeycomb lattice or the triangular lattice, but with different materials, shapes, or sizes of rods resulting in the complicated structure. In this paper, an interface is constructed by two 2D PCs with different rectangular lattices, but the same materials, shapes, and sizes of dielectric rods, which generates interface states. The interface states are analyzed with respect to Zak phases and surface impedances. The retainability of the interface states in rectangular lattice PCs is investigated by studying the relationship between the length-width ratio of the rectangular lattice and the Zak phase. It is found that, when the interface states are generated by changing the length-width ratio of the rectangular lattice, the retainability of the interface states is related to the positions of the photonic bandgaps or the Zak phases of the bands. A more detailed examination indicates that these conclusions are applicable to the rectangular lattice PCs with other materials, shapes, and sizes of dielectric rods. These results can lead to new ways to generate interface states easily, with only one kind of dielectric rod. In addition, these outcomes may contribute to the understanding of the relationship between the geometry and the interface state.

Psychological and social factors are known to influence blood pressure (BP) and risk of hypertension and associated cardiovascular diseases.
