Semiconductor excitations can hybridize with cavity photons to form exciton-polaritons (EPs) with remarkable properties, including light-like energy flow combined with matter-like interactions. To fully harness these properties, EPs must retain ballistic, coherent transport despite matter-mediated interactions with lattice phonons. Here we develop a nonlinear momentum-resolved optical approach that directly images EPs in real space on femtosecond scales in a range of polaritonic architectures. We focus our analysis on EP propagation in layered halide perovskite microcavities. We reveal that EP-phonon interactions lead to a large renormalization of EP velocities at high excitonic fractions at room temperature. Despite these strong EP-phonon interactions, ballistic transport is maintained for up to half-exciton EPs, in agreement with quantum simulations of dynamic disorder shielding through light-matter hybridization. Above 50% excitonic character, rapid decoherence leads to diffusive transport. Our work provides a general framework to precisely balance EP coherence, velocity, and nonlinear interactions.

Two-dimensional semiconductor moir\'e materials have emerged as a highly controllable platform to simulate and explore quantum condensed matter. Compared to real solids, electrons in semiconductor moir\'e materials are less strongly attracted to the moir\'e lattice sites, making the nonlocal contributions to the magnetic interactions as important as the Anderson super-exchange. It provides a unique platform to study the effects of competing magnetic interactions. Here, we report the observation of strongly frustrated magnetic interactions in a Wigner-Mott insulating state at 2/3 filling of the moir\'e lattice in angle-aligned WSe2/WS2 heterobilayers. Magneto-optical measurements show that the net exchange interaction is antiferromagnetic for filling factors below 1 with a strong suppression at 2/3 filling. The suppression is lifted upon screening of the long-range Coulomb interactions and melting of the Wigner-Mott insulator by a nearby metallic gate. The results can be qualitatively captured by a honeycomb-lattice spin model with an antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor coupling and a ferromagnetic second-neighbor coupling. Our study establishes semiconductor moir\'e materials as a model system for the lattice-spin physics and frustrated magnetism.

Scalable quantum information processing requires that modular gate operations can be executed in parallel. The presence of crosstalk decreases the individual addressability, causing erroneous results during simultaneous operations. For superconducting qubits which operate in the microwave regime, electromagnetic isolation is often limited due to design constraints, leading to signal crosstalk that can deteriorate the quality of simultaneous gate operations. Here, we propose and demonstrate a method based on AC Stark effect for calibrating the microwave signal crosstalk. The method is suitable for processors based on fixed-frequency qubits which are known for high coherence and simple control. The optimal compensation parameters can be reliably identified from a well-defined interference pattern. We implement the method on an array of 7 superconducting qubits, and show its effectiveness in removing the majority of crosstalk errors.

Controlling the flow of quantum information is a fundamental task for quantum computers, which is unfeasible to realize on classical devices. Coherent devices which can process quantum states are thus required to route the quantum states that encode information. In this paper we demonstrate experimentally the smallest quantum transistor with a superconducting quantum processor which is composed of a collector qubit, an emitter qubit, and a coupler (transistor gate). The interaction strength between the collector and emitter qubits is controlled by the frequency and state of the coupler, effectively implementing a quantum switch. Through the coupler-state-dependent Heisenberg (inherent) interaction between the qubits, a single-step (native) conditional $i$SWAP operation can be applied. To this end, we find that it is important to take into consideration higher energy level for achieving a native and high-fidelity transistor operation. By reconstructing the Quantum Process Tomography, we obtain an operation fidelity of $92.36\%$ when the transistor gate is open ($i$SWAP implementation) and $95.23 \%$ in the case of closed gate (identity gate implementation). Negative reflection occurs when light is reflected towards the same side of the normal to the boundary from which it is incident. This exotic optical phenomenon, which provides a new avenue towards light manipulation, is not only yet to be visualized in real space but remains largely unexplored both at the nanoscale and in natural media. Here, we directly visualize nanoscale-confined polaritons negatively reflecting on subwavelength mirrors fabricated in a low-loss van der Waals crystal. Our near-field nanoimaging results unveil an unconventional and broad tunability of both the polaritonic wavelength and direction of propagation upon negative reflection. Based on these findings, we introduce a novel device in nano-optics: a hyperbolic nanoresonator, in which hyperbolic polaritons with different momenta reflect back to a common point source, enhancing its intensity. These results pave the way to realize nanophotonics in low-loss natural media, providing a novel and efficient route to confine and control the flow of light at the nanoscale, key for future optical on-chip nanotechnologies.

The optoelectronic and transport properties of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors (2D TMDs) are highly susceptible to external perturbation, enabling precise tailoring of material function through post-synthetic modifications. Here we show that nanoscale inhomogeneities known as nanobubbles can be used for both strain and, less invasively, dielectric tuning of exciton transport in bilayer tungsten disulfide (WSe2). We use ultrasensitive spatiotemporally resolved optical scattering microscopy to directly image exciton transport, revealing that dielectric nanobubbles are surprisingly efficient at funneling and trapping excitons at room temperature, even though the energies of the bright excitons are negligibly affected. Our observations suggest that exciton funneling in dielectric inhomogeneities is driven by momentum-indirect (dark) excitons whose energies are more sensitive to dielectric perturbations than bright excitons. These results reveal a new pathway to control exciton transport in 2D semiconductors with exceptional spatial and energetic precision using dielectric engineering of dark state energetic landscapes.

Identifying, quantifying, and suppressing decoherence mechanisms in qubits are important steps towards the goal of engineering a quantum computer or simulator. Superconducting circuits offer flexibility in qubit design; however, their performance is adversely affected by quasiparticles (broken Cooper pairs). Developing a quasiparticle mitigation strategy compatible with scalable, high-coherence devices is therefore highly desirable. Here we experimentally demonstrate how to control quasiparticle generation by downsizing the qubit, capping it with a metallic cover, and equipping it with suitable quasiparticle traps. Using a flip-chip design, we shape the electromagnetic environment of the qubit above the superconducting gap, inhibiting quasiparticle poisoning. Our findings support the hypothesis that quasiparticle generation is dominated by the breaking of Cooper pairs at the junction, as a result of photon absorption by the antenna-like qubit structure. We achieve record low charge-parity switching rate (<1Hz). Our aluminium devices also display improved stability with respect to discrete charging events.

The metal-insulator transition (MIT) driven by electronic correlations is a fundamental and challenging problem in condensed-matter physics. Particularly, whether such a transition can be continuous remains open. The emergence of semiconducting moir\'e materials with continuously tunable bandwidth provides an ideal platform to study interaction-driven MITs. Although a bandwidth-tuned MIT at fixed full electron filling of the moir\'e superlattice has been reported recently, that at fractional filling, which involves translational symmetry breaking of the underlying superlattice, remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate bandwidth-tuned MITs in a MoSe2/WS2 moir\'e superlattice at both integer and fractional fillings using the exciton sensing technique. The bandwidth is controlled by an out-of-plane electric field. The dielectric response is probed optically with the 2s exciton in a remote WSe2 sensor layer. The exciton spectral weight is negligible for the metallic state, consistent with a large negative dielectric constant. It continuously vanishes when the transition is approached from the insulating side, corresponding to a diverging dielectric constant or a "dielectric catastrophe". Our results support continuous interaction-driven MITs in a two-dimensional triangular lattice and stimulate future explorations of exotic quantum phases, such as quantum spin liquids, in their vicinities.
