182. Cu-Al spinel oxide as a sustained release catalyst for methanol steam reforming: Enhancing the catalytic performance via surface reconstruction

Abstract

Cu-Al spinel oxide as a sustained release catalyst gradually releases active metal Cu during the methanol steam reforming reaction, whose catalytic behavior depends strongly on the surface structure of the catalyst. In this context, Cu-Al spinel solid solution is synthesized by a solid phase ball milling method, followed by treating with acidic and basic solutions in order to modulate the surface composition and structure, thereby to further improve the catalytic performance. Nitric acid is effective for the removal of both surface dispersed Cu and Al oxide species, whereas sodium hydroxide is only effective for the removal of Al oxide species, and ammonium hydroxide shows the weakest effect, removing a very small amount of Cu and Al species. Accompanying with the loss of Cu and Al species, the catalyst surface undergoes structural reconstruction, showing a redistribution of Cu species. Consequently, the copper releasing behavior varies drastically. The catalytic testing results show that the nitric acid and ammonium hydroxide treated catalysts present improved activity, where in the former also shows better stability. Sodium hydroxide treatment has a negative effect on the sustained releasing catalytic performance. In combination with the characterization results of the tested catalysts, it is found that both the copper particle dimension and the microstructure strain of sustained released copper play important roles in the catalytic performance. The findings of this report provide a practical method for the improvement of the sustained releasing catalysis.

183. Photocatalytic degradation of aflatoxin B1by porous carbon nitrides under visible light

Abstract

Porous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), which exhibits a sensitive response to visible light, was prepared through a simple thermal condensation process. It was then used to investigated its efficiency in degrading aflatoxin B1(AFB1). The factors affecting the degradation efficiency of AFB1, including precursors of g-C3N4, visible light sources, pH value, and irradiation time were investigated. The porous g-C3N4prepared using melamine as the precursor, exhibits improved crystallization performance and higher photocatalytic activity. The degradation rate of AFB1reached 98% under the visible light of a metal halide lamp for 90 min, and the degradation process was fitted with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. In addition, superoxide radicals (·O2−) and holes (h+) play important roles in reducing AFB1. The five degradation products primarily result from damage to the lactone and furan ring structure, which initially demonstrate a decrease in AFB1toxicity. This study provides an effective, environmentally-friendly, and practical approach for reducing AFB1.

184. Assessing the impact of environmental variability on harvest in a heterogeneous fishery: a case study of the Canadian lobster fishery

Abstract

ABSTRACTGlobal fisheries face significant challenges in the coming years due to climate change. Understanding and anticipating the impacts of climate change is a necessity for implementing appropriate fisheries management. This study uses a panel dataset of individual fishing vessels to examine how variation in ocean temperature affects fish harvest. Using the American lobster (Homarus americanus) fishery in the Maritimes region of Canada as a case study, this paper employs a generalised linear mixed model (GLMM) taking into account heterogeneity amongst fishers, gear, vessels, and fishing areas. The GLMM is found to have better performance and estimations when compared against alternative specifications. As expected, a significant and positive relationship was found, further contributing to the existing evidence of warming impacts on the lobster fishery. The implications of this study are twofold: first, it provides further evidence that environmental change does have a significant positive impact on harvest. This information should be considered by fishing industry and fisheries authorities when implementing appropriate adaptive management strategies and measures in their decision making. Second, it illustrates that allowing for mixed-effects using GLMMs is a valuable empirical tool when dealing with hierarchical data structures.

Abstract

A single-domain protein catenane refers to two mechanically interlocked polypeptide rings that fold synergistically into a compact and integrated structure, which is extremely rare in nature. Here, we report a single-domain protein catenane of dihydrofolate reductase (cat -DHFR). This design was achieved by rewiring the connectivity between secondary motifs to introduce artificial entanglement and synthesis was readily accomplished through a series of programmed and streamlined post-translational processing events in cells without any additional in vitro reactions. The target molecule contained few exogenous motifs and was thoroughly characterized using a combination of ultra-performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, protease cleavage experiments and ion mobility spectrometry–mass spectrometry. Compared with the linear control, cat -DHFR retained its catalytic capability and exhibited enhanced stability against thermal or chemical denaturation due to conformational restriction. These results suggest that linear proteins may be converted into their concatenated single-domain counterparts with almost identical chemical compositions, well-preserved functions and elevated stabilities, representing an entirely new horizon in protein science. 190. Low-temperature plasma-activated medium enhances the chemosensitivity of colorectal cancer cells by improving hypoxia

Abstract

Studies have demonstrated that the tumour microenvironment is hypoxia and that hypoxia can induce hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) expression and mediate tumour chemoresistance, which leads to a very poor prognosis for cancer patients. In this study, an economical and practical HIF-1α inhibitor, plasma-activated medium (PAM), was prepared, and its role in colorectal cancer (CRC) was investigated in vitro and in vivo. We found that HIF-1α expression significantly increased under hypoxia in CRC cells followed by decreased chemosensitivity to oxaliplatin (OXA). Additionally, PAM could reduce HIF-1α expression induced by hypoxia in CRC cells, and compared to PAM or OXA alone, PAM enhanced the chemosensitivity of OXA both in vitro in CRC cells and in vivo in cell-derived xenografts, as indicated by the inhibition of cell proliferation and tumour growth. Further mechanistic studies revealed that PAM might exert synergistic antitumour activity by inhibiting the MAPK pathway, which deserves further elucidation. In summary, PAM displayed prospective clinical application due to its important function in improving hypoxia in CRC.

193. Effect of hydrogen sulfide on PC12 cell injury induced by high ATP concentration

Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the potential protective effect of hydrogen sulfide against neural cell damage induced by a high-concentration of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).Methods: PC12 cells were incubated with ATP in order to induce cell damage. The extracellular level of H2S and protein expression of cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS) were determined. The PC12 cells pretreated with NaHS, aminooxyacetic acid (AOAA) and KN-62, prior to further incubation with ATP, and the effect of the treatments on cell viability was investigated.Results: High-concentration ATP induced cell death in PC12 cells, and this was accompanied by markedly increased contents of extracellular H2S and CBS expression (p < 0.05). The ATP-induced cytotoxicity was significantly compromised after pretreatment with H2S. (p < 0.05). The viability of PC12 cells pretreated with NaHS and AOAA was significantly higher than that of PC12 cells treated with ATP alone. In addition, the viability of ATP-treated PC12 cells was further markedly increased after pretreatment with NaHS and KN-62 (p < 0.05).Conclusion: ATP induced a concentration- and time-dependent cytotoxicity in PC12 cells via theendogenous H2S/CBS system. Supplementation with exogenous H2S mitigated the cell damageinduced by high concentration of ATP via a specific mechanism which may be specifically related to P2X7R.
