Background: Although patients with multiple arterial dissections in distinct arterial regions rarely present with known connective tissue syndromes, we hypothesized that mild connective tissue abnormalities are common findings in these patients. Methods: From a consecutive register of 322 patients with cervical artery dissection (CeAD), we identified and analyzed 4 patients with a history of additional dissections in other vascular beds. In three patients, dermal connective tissue was examined by electron microscopy. DNA from all four patients was studied by whole-exome sequencing and copy number variation (CNV) analysis. Results: The collagen fibers of dermal biopsies were pathologic in all three analyzed patients. One patient carried a CNV disrupting the COL3A1 and COL5A2 genes (vascular or hypermobility type of Ehlers–Danlos syndrome), and another patient a CNV in MYH11 (familial thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections). The third patient carried a missense substitution in COL5A2. Conclusion: Three patients showed morphologic alterations of the dermal connective tissue, and two patients carried pathogenic variants in genes associated with arterial connective tissue dysfunction. The findings suggest that genetic testing should be recommended after recurrent arterial dissections, independently of apparent phenotypical signs of connective tissue disorders.

The human face is a heritable surface with many complex sensory organs. In recent years, many genetic loci associated with facial features have been reported in different populations, yet there is a lack of studies on the Han Chinese population. Here, we report a genome-wide association study of 3D normal human faces of 2,659 Han Chinese with autosegment phenotypes of facial morphology. We identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) encompassing four genomic regions showing significant associations with different facial regions, including SNPs in DENND1B associated with the chin, SNPs among PISRT1 associated with eyes, SNPs between DCHS2 and SFRP2 associated with the nose, and SNPs in VPS13B associated with the nose. We replicate 24 SNPs from previously reported genetic loci in different populations, whose candidate genes are DCHS2, SUPT3H, HOXD1, SOX9, PAX3, and EDAR. These results provide a more comprehensive understanding of the genetic basis of variation in human facial morphology.

The ADP‐ribosylation factor‐like proteins (ARLs) have been proved to regulate the malignant phenotypes of several cancers. However, the exact role of ARLs in gastric cancer (GC) remains elusive. In this study, we systematically investigate the expression status, interactive relations, potential pathways, genetic variations and clinical values of ARLs in GC. We find that ARLs are significantly dysregulated in GC and involved in various cancer‐related pathways. Subsequently, machine learning models identify ARL4C as one of the two most significant clinical indicators among ARLs for GC. Furthermore, ARL4C silencing remarkably inhibits the growth and metastasis of GC cells both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, enrichment analysis indicates that ARL4C is highly correlated with TGF‐β1 signalling. Correspondingly, TGF‐β1 treatment dramatically increases ARL4C expression and ARL4C knockdown inhibits the phosphorylation level of Smads, downstream factors of TGF‐β1. Meanwhile, the coexpression of ARL4C and TGF‐β1 worsens the prognosis of GC patients. Our work comprehensively demonstrates the crucial role of ARLs in the carcinogenesis of GC and the specific mechanisms underlying the GC‐promoting effects of TGF‐β1. More importantly, we uncover the great promise of ARL4C‐targeted therapy in improving the efficacy of TGF‐β1 inhibitors for GC patients.

Due to the advantages of small size, low power consumption and price, no wear, and reliable performances of valve-less piezoelectric pumps, which academics have studied and gained excellent consequences for, valve-less pumps are applied in the following fields: fuel supply, chemical analysis, biological fields, drug injection, lubrication, irrigation of experiment fields, etc. In addition, they will broaden the application scope in micro-drive fields and cooling systems in the future. During this work, first, the valve structures and output capabilities of the passive valve and active valve piezoelectric pumps are discussed. Second, the various forms of symmetrical structure, asymmetrical structure, and drive variant structure valve-less pumps are introduced, the working processes are illustrated, and the advantages and disadvantages of pump characteristics with the flow rate and pressure are analyzed under different driving conditions. In this process, some optimization methods with theoretical and simulation analysis are explained. Third, the applications of valve-less pumps are analyzed. Finally, the conclusions and future development of valve-less piezoelectric pumps are given. This work attempts to provide some guidance for enhancing output performances and applications.

Rechargeable lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are considered as one of the most promising next-generation energy storage devices because of their high theoretical energy density. However, the dissolution of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) in an ether electrolyte and its sluggish reaction kinetics severely limit their practical performances. Herein, an atomically dispersed supported metal catalyst with a Co–N4 structure on active carbon (Co–N–C/AC) is prepared and introduced to modify the separators of Li–S batteries. The Co–N–C catalyst not only suppresses the shuttle effect of LiPSs through the physical barrier and chemical affinity but also improves the redox kinetics of the sulfur species. The first-principles calculation indicates that LiPSs on Co–N–C possess a high binding energy and low decomposition energy barrier in the electrochemical process, thus effectively accelerating the conversion of LiPSs during the charge/discharge process and improving sulfur utilization in Li–S batteries. Therefore, a Li–S battery based on a Co–N–C/AC modified separator can deliver admirable rate performance and stable cycling life with a reversible discharge capacity of over 865 mA h g−1 and a decay rate of 0.043% per cycle after 500 cycles at 1.0 C. This work provides new insights for developing a functional separator to accelerate the conversion kinetics of LiPSs for achieving high energy density Li–S batteries.

The glucosyltransferases, Rab-like GTPase activators and myotubularins (GRAM) domain is highly conserved in eukaryotic cells and is found in proteins involved in membrane-associated processes. GRAM domain proteins have not yet been functionally characterized in cotton. In this study, we identified 164 genes encoding GRAM domain proteins in four cotton species, comprising two subfamilies. In Gossypium hirsutum, our transcriptome data showed that GhGRAM31 was predominantly expressed during the rapid elongation stage of fiber development and that it might control fiber length. GhGRAM31-RNAi transgenic cotton lines showed inhibition of fiber elongation and produced shorter mature fibers, and this was coupled with expression changes of genes related to fiber development. In addition, lint percentage and seed size were also decreased in the RNAi lines. Further examination revealed that GhGRAM31 directly interacts with two other GRAM-domain proteins, GhGRAM5 and GhGRAM35. GhGRAM5 also interacts with the transcription factor GhTTG1, while GhGRAM35 interacts with the transcription factors GhHOX1 and GhHD1. Co-expression of GhGRAM31 and GhGRAM35 was able to promote GhHD1 transcription activity in cotton protoplasts. Our results provide new insights into the biological function of the GRAM-domain protein family in cotton, and selected genes have the potential to be utilized in future programs for the genetic improvement of fibers.

The Indian Cuckoo, Cuculus micropterus, belongs to the family Cuculidae. In this paper, we sequenced and analysized the complete mitochondrial genome of C. micropterus. The complete mitochondrial genome of C. micropterus is 17,541 bp in length, which was submitted to the NCBI database under the accession number MZ048030. It contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosome RNA genes, and one non-coding control region. The overall base composition of the mitochondrial DNA is 33.2% for A, 24.2% for T, 29.8% for C, and 12.8% for G, with a GC content of 42.6%. In order to explore the molecular phylogenetics evolution of Cuculidae, the nucleotide sequence data of 13 PCGs of C. micropterus and other 11 Cuculiformes were used for the phylogenetic analysis. The result shows that C. micropterus is closely related to Cuculus canorus bakeri. The study contributes to illuminating the taxonomic status of C. micropterus, and may facilitate further investigation of the evolution of Cuculidae.

Hyenas (family Hyaenidae) occupy a variety of different niches, of which the striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) scavenges mainly on the carcasses of animals. We compared its genome with the genomes of nine other mammals, focusing on similarities and differences in chemoreception, detoxification, digestive, and immune systems. The results showed that the striped hyena's immune and digestive system-related gene families have significantly expanded, which was likely to be an adaptive response to its scavenging lifestyle. In addition, 88 and 26 positive selected genes (PSGs) were identified in the immune system and digestive system, respectively, which may be the molecular basis for immune defense system to effectively resist pathogen invasion. Functional enrichment analysis of PSGs revealed that most of them were involved in the immune regulation process. Among them, eight specific missense mutations were found in two PSGs (MHC class II antigen DOA and MHC class II antigen DOB), suggesting important reorganization of the immune system in the striped hyena. Moreover, we identified one cathelicidin gene and four defensin genes in the striped hyenas by genome mining, which have high-efficiency and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Of particular interest, a striped hyena-specific missense mutation was found in the cathelicidin gene. PolyPhen-2 classified the missense mutation as a harmful mutation, which may have aided in immune adaptation to carrion feeding. Our genomic analyses on the striped hyena provided insights into its success in the adaptation to the scavenging lifestyle.

The blood pheasant (Ithaginis cruentus), the only species in the genus Ithaginis, lives in an extremely inhospitable high‐altitude environment, coping with hypoxia and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. To further investigate the phylogeny of Phasianidae species based on complete genomes and understand the molecular genetic mechanisms of the high‐altitude adaptation of the blood pheasant, we de novo assembled and annotated the complete genome of the blood pheasant. The blood pheasant genome size is 1.04 Gb with scaffold N50 of 10.88 Mb. We identified 109.92 Mb (10.62%) repetitive elements, 279,037 perfect microsatellites, and 17,209 protein‐coding genes. The phylogenetic tree of Phasianidae based on whole genomes revealed three highly supported major clades with the blood pheasant included in the “erectile clade.” Comparative genomics analysis showed that many genes were positively selected in the blood pheasant, which was associated with response to hypoxia and/or UV radiation. More importantly, among these positively selected genes (PSGs) which were related to high‐altitude adaptation, sixteen PSGs had blood pheasant‐specific missense mutations. Our data and analysis lay solid foundation to the study of Phasianidae phylogeny and provided new insights into the potential adaptation mechanisms to the high altitude employed by the blood pheasant.

Objective This study aimed to investigate the use of three-dimensional visualization for preoperative evaluation of portal vein invasion in hilar cholangiocarcinoma (HCCA). Methods This recombination study for preoperative computerized tomography images was completed in 42 patients undergoing radical resection of HCCA combined with hepatectomy. Portal vein invasion with postoperative pathology was used as a gold standard to decide if the diagnosis was correct or not. We compared the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and total correctness of radiologists and a three-dimensional (3D) visualization model for the assessment of tumor-caused portal vein invasion. Results The findings for the estimation of portal vein invasion by radiologists based on CT images were as follows: sensitivity = 90.9%; specificity = 83.8%; positive predictive value = 66.7%; negative predictive value = 96.3%; and overall accuracy = 85.7%. The findings for estimation by the 3D visualization model were as follows: sensitivity = 90.9%; specificity = 96.8%; positive predictive value = 90.9%; negative predictive value = 96.8%; and overall accuracy = 90.5%. Conclusion The positive predictive value of 3D visualization technology in the diagnosis of portal vein invasion is notably superior to that of subjective assessment by radiologists. This technique can thus play a significant role in preventing unnecessary resectioning of non-invaded portal veins and hepatectomy.

Perovskite solar cells have attracted intense attention over the past decade because of their low cost, abundant raw materials, and rapidly growing power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, nonradiative charge carrier losses still constitute a major factor limiting the PCE to well below the Shockley-Queisser limit. This Perspective summarizes recent atomistic quantum dynamics studies on the photoinduced excited-state processes in metal halide perovskites (MHPs), including both hybrid organic-inorganic and all-inorganic MHPs and three- and two-dimensional MHPs. The simulations, performed using a combination of time-domain ab initio density functional theory and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics, allow emphasis on various intrinsic and extrinsic features, such as components, structure, dimensionality and interface engineering, control and exposure to various environmental factors, defects, surfaces, and their passivation. The detailed atomistic simulations advance our understanding of electron-vibrational dynamics in MHPs and provide valuable guidelines for enhancing the performance of perovskite solar cells.

The perovskite CH3 NH3 PbI3 excited-state lifetimes exhibit conflicting experimental results under humid environments. Using ab initio nonadiabatic (NA) molecular dynamics, we demonstrate that the interplay between lead vacancy and water can rationalize the puzzle. The lead vacancy reduces NA coupling by localizing holes, slowing electron-hole recombination. By creating a deep electron trap state, the coexistence of a neutral lead vacancy and water molecules enhances NA coupling, accelerating charge recombination by a factor of over 3. By eliminating the mid-gap state by accepting two photoexcited electrons, the negatively charged lead vacancy interacting with water molecules increases the carrier lifetime over 2 times longer than in the pristine system. The simulations rationalize the positive and negative effects of water on the solar cell performance exposure to humidity.

Flexible electronics are currently one of the most important developing trends, which is normally fabricated and supported on external flexible substrates. In this work, we experimentally realized a facile graphene-mediated peel-off technology for the substrate-free flexible hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin film solar cell. The a-Si:H solar cells were firstly grown on high thermal tolerance rigid SiO2/Si substrates with graphene interlayers and then were facilely peeled off from the graphene/SiO2/Si substrate with high fidelity. The density functional theory calculations verify the fact that sandwiching the graphene sheet weakens the interaction between the solar device and SiO2/Si substrate with a 61% exfoliation energy drop. Subsequently, a microstructured polyethylene terephthalate film was designed as the window layer of the substrate-free a-Si:H device to promote the broadband and omnidirectional enhanced performance of the flexible device, as well as the mechanical strength. Our proposed graphene-mediated peel-off process can be extended to fabricate other light weight electronics and optoelectronic devices (especially for devices needed to be obtained under high temperature) and can potentially be developed into large-scale manufacturing in the future as well.

Purpose Over the past decades, quantum dots (QDs) have shown the broad application in diverse fields, especially in intracellular probing and drug delivery, due to their high fluorescence intensity, long fluorescence lifetime, strong light-resistant bleaching ability, and strong light stability. Therefore, we explore a kind of therapeutic potential against cancer with fluorescent imaging. Methods In the current study, a new type of QDs (QDs@L-Cys-TAEA-5-FUA) capped with L-cysteine (L-Cys) and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TAEA) ligands, and conjugated with 5-fluorouracil-1-acetic acid (5-FUA) has been synthesized. Ligands were characterized by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. The modified QDs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), and fluorescence microscopy. And the biological activity of modified QDs was explored by using MTT assay with HeLa, SMMC-7721 HepG2, and QSG-7701 cells. The fluorescence imaging of modified QDs was obtained by fluorescence microscope. Results The modified QDs are of controllable sizes in the range of 4-5 nm and they possess strong optical emission properties. UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra demonstrated that the L-Cys-TAEA-5-FUA was successfully incorporated into QD nanoparticles. The MTT results demonstrated that L-Cys-TAEA-5-FUA modified QDs could efficiently inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells as compared to the normal cells, illustrating their antitumor efficacy. The mechanistic studies revealed that the effective internalization of modified QDs inside cancer cells could inhibit their proliferation, through excessive production of intracellular reactive oxygen species, leading to apoptosis process. Conclusion The present study suggests that modified QDs can enter cells efficiently and could be employed as therapeutic agents for the treatment of various types of cancers with fluorescent imaging.

Purpose Quantum dots (QDs) are used as fluorescent probes due to their high fluorescence intensity, longevity of fluorescence, strong light-resistant bleaching ability and high light stability. Therefore, we explore a more precise probe that can target an organelle. Methods In the current study, a new class of fluorescence probes were developed using QDs capped with 4 different L-cysteine-polyamine-morpholine linked by mercapto groups. Ligands were characterised by Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Modified QDs were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), and fluorescence microscopy. And the biological activity of modified QDs was explored by using MTT assay with HeLa, SMMC-7721 and HepG2 cells. The fluorescence imaging of modified QDs was obtained by confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscopy (CLSM). Results Synthesized QDs ranged between 4 to 5 nm and had strong optical emission properties. UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra demonstrated that the cysteine-polyamine-morpholine were successfully incorporated into QD nanoparticles. The MTT results demonstrated that modified QDs had lesser cytotoxicity when compared to unmodified QDs. In addition, modified QDs had strong fluorescence intensity in HeLa cells and targeted lysosomes of HeLa cells. Conclusion This study demonstrates the modified QDs efficiently entered cells and could be used as a potential lysosome-targeting fluorescent probe.

TOB1 participates in various kinds of cancers. However, its role in pancreatic cancer has rarely been reported. In this study, we explored the expression and mechanisms of TOB1 in regulating the malignant phenotype of pancreatic cancer cells. TOB1 expression was determined by data mining and immunohistochemistry (IHC), and its localization was observed by immunofluorescence. CCK‐8 cell proliferation, colony formation, flow cytometric, transwell migration, and Western blot (WB) assays were used to examine how it impacts the malignant phenotype of pancreatic cancer. Furthermore, Foxa2 binding to TOB1 was tested by dual‐luciferase reporter assays, and RNA‐Seq was performed to identify signaling pathways. We found TOB1 was downregulated in pancreatic cancer tissues and was mainly located in the cytoplasm. TOB1 overexpression reduced the proliferation of K‐Ras wild‐type pancreatic cancer cells but made no difference to cell migration and invasion. Foxa2 overexpression significantly enhanced TOB1 promoter activity. Moreover, overexpressing TOB1 substantially enriched the calcium pathway in K‐Ras wild‐type pancreatic cancer cells. In conclusion, TOB1 may suppress the proliferation of K‐Ras wild‐type pancreatic cancer cells by regulating calcium pathway genes., Foxa2, as an upstream transcription factor, may regulate TOB1 expression. TOB1 overexpression decreased expression of Cyclin D1, CDK2 and CDK4, and caused proliferation inhibition of K-Ras wild‐type pancreatic cancer cells, at least in part through the calcium pathway.

A series of CaAl6Ga6O19:Cr3+,Ln3+ (Ln = Yb, Nd, and Er) novel near-infrared (NIR) emitting phosphors were prepared via a high-temperature solid-state reaction. The luminescence spectra and decay lifetimes of these samples were measured to prove the energy transfer process from the Cr3+ to Ln3+ ions. The CaAl6Ga6O19:Cr3+,Ln3+ (Ln = Yb, Nd, and Er) phosphors can efficiently convert the short-wavelength sunlight in the near-ultraviolet and visible (UV-Vis) regions into near-infrared emission, which matches the higher sensitivity region of the c-Si solar cells. The maximal energy transfer efficiencies of CaAl6Ga6O19:Cr3+,Ln3+ (Ln = Yb, Nd, and Er) were 25.84%, 73.90%, and 29.46%, respectively. Our results show that the CaAl6Ga6O19:Cr3+,Ln3+ (Ln = Yb, Nd, and Er) phosphors have potential applications as luminescent downshifting convertors for enhancing the photoelectric conversion efficiency of the c-Si solar cells.

Two-dimensional (2D) structured layered chalcogenide materials play a pivotal role in a wide range of applications owing to their exotic physical properties and flexible architectures. Here, we report on the controllable synthesis of 2D SnSe2 flakes with screw dislocations and fractal structures on mica and graphite substrates using a molecular beam epitaxy technique. Atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the composition and crystal structures of the 2D SnSe2 flakes. We show that 2D SnSe2 flakes with tunable density of screw dislocations and fractal structures can be prepared by adjusting the growth parameters. This work offers new opportunities for engineering 2D materials with unique architectures to develop novel electronic devices and catalysts.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) exhibit interesting electronic and optical properties depending on their complex layer stacking and unique architectures. Here, we develop a high-efficiency and low-cost chemical vapor deposition technique to controllably grow 2D MoSe2 flakes with kirigami structures. Optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the kirigami architectures. Similar kirigami structures can also be extended to WSe2 flakes. This work expands the chemical toolbox for design and fabrication of TMDCs and offers new opportunities for engineering 2D materials with unique three-dimensional architectures and complex layer stacking to develop novel electronic devices and catalysts.

A series of solid solution CaAl12-xGaxO19:Mn4+ phosphors were prepared via a high-temperature solid-state reaction. Their structural properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the luminescence was investigated via photoluminescence spectra. The obtained CaAl12-xGaxO19:Mn4+ phosphor has a strong broad excitation band in the range of 250-550 nm, which can be easily excited by the UV, NUV and blue light, and a broad emission band centered at 655 nm between 600 nm and 800 nm due to the 2Eg → 4A2g transition of the Mn4+ ion. The PL spectra indicate that the intensity of CaAl12O19:Mn4+ can be enhanced when the Ga3+ concentration equals 1. Furthermore, the element mapping, optical properties, thermal stability, fluorescence lifetime and CIE chromaticity reveal that the CaAl12-xGaxO19:Mn4+ phosphors can be considered as potential candidates in indoor plant cultivation.
