The main aim of this study was to examine gender stereotype and behavior among students towards masculinity and femininity at higher education institutions (HEI) in Malaysia. The study was conducted in two higher education institutions, namely International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and University Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Malaysia. A total of 300 students (77 males & 223 females) was selected as the respondents from the selected study areas using purposive sampling method. A survey research design was employed in this study. Questionnaires were completed in a supervised setting by the research protocol. The first objective of this study was to examine the student's masculine and feminine behavior at higher learning institutions using traditional and nontraditional scales. The results revealed that the highest numbers of respondents provided traditional masculine behaviours towards their gender norms in terms of" Dominating family" (92.02 percent) while the lowest percentage was in terms of " Not sharing problem with others"(26.0 percent). Similarly, the study examined female student's attitudes towards femininity from the traditional and non-traditional perspectives. The results revealed that the highest numbers of responses were nontraditional on the aspects of caring and nurturing (96.0 percent), patience (50.05 percent), controlled by others as a natural (52.0 percent) and selfless (57 percent) respectively. By examining both male and female student's attitudes towards masculinity and femininity, it could be summarized that male students were more traditional than female students. Cerebral palsy is a neuro-development disorder, management of which requires awareness of risk factors and regular developmental assessments. Committed routine follow up is necessary for cerebral palsy patient along with parental adequate knowledge. Effective timely intervention with professional guidance along with medication could significantly improve the overall condition of cerebral palsy patient and therefore would make their living relatively meaningful. Early intervention starts withinfirst 6 months after term age. Intervention should be performed daily in home consideringthe importance of parent child relationship, training and counseling by professionalguidance. In fact, Parental knowledge of their child's cerebral palsy is inadequate. If professionals give early intervention to the child and improve parental knowledge about cerebral palsy will empower them to help their children to overcome this chronic lifelong disorder. The study was carried out to analyse the economics of shifting land from field crops to hog plum cultivation in southern Bangladesh during July to September 2018. A total of 120 farmers were selected by using multistage stratified random sampling technique to collect primary data. Result of the study shows that the per hectare average total cost of hog plum cultivation was Tk. 94,126. The average yield of hog plum was 7.97 t ha-1. Net return from hog plum cultivation was Tk. 126,921 per hectare. By cultivating hog plum, farmers obtained 56 to 93% higher net return than the other existing cropping patterns. Since the BCR (2.94), NPV (Tk. 2215,000) and IRR (59%) were very high, the land shifting decision towards hog plum cultivation was sensible. However, BCR was very low in the initial stages of hog plum plantation. Initial investment support from public or private sector could facilitate the growth of this cultivation practice.

Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of cholera, displays remarkable adaptability to diverse environmental conditions through morphological changes that enhance its pathogenicity and influence the global epidemiology of the disease. This study examines the motility differences between filamentous and comma-shaped forms of the V. cholerae O1 strain under various viscosity conditions. Utilizing the El Tor strain, we induced filamentous transformation and conducted a comparative analysis with the canonical comma-shaped morphology. Our methodology involved assessing motility patterns, swimming speeds, rotation rates, kinematics, and reversal frequencies using dark-field microscopy and high-speed imaging techniques. The results show that filamentous V. cholerae cells retain enhanced motility in viscous environments, indicating an evolutionary adaptation for survival in varied habitats, particularly the human gastrointestinal tract. Filamentous forms exhibited increased reversal behavior at mucin interfaces, suggesting an advantage in penetrating the mucus layer. Furthermore, the presence of filamentous cells in bile-supplemented medium underscores their relevance in natural infection scenarios., Importance: This study highlights the enhanced motility of filamentous Vibrio cholerae in viscous environments, an adaptation that may provide a survival advantage in the human gastrointestinal tract. By demonstrating increased reversal behavior at mucin interfaces, filamentous V. cholerae cells exhibit a superior ability to penetrate the mucus layer, which is crucial for effective colonization and infection. Liver fibrosis is potentially a reversible form of liver disease that evolved from the early stage of liver scarring as a consequence of chronic liver injuries. Recurrent injuries in the liver without any appropriate medication cause the injuries to get intense and deeper, which gradually leads to the progression of irreversible cirrhosis or carcinoma. Unfortunately, there are no approved treatment strategies for reversing hepatic fibrosis, making it one of the significant risk factors for developing advanced liver disorders and liver disease-associated mortality. Consequently, the interpretation of the fundamental mechanisms, etiology, and pathogenesis is crucial for identifying the potential therapeutic target as well as evaluating novel anti-fibrotic therapy. However, despite innumerable research, the functional mechanism and disease characteristics are still obscure. To accelerate the understanding of underlying disease pathophysiology, molecular pathways and disease progression mechanism, it is crucial to mimic human liver disease through the formation of precise disease models. Although various in vitro and in vivo liver fibrotic models have emerged and developed already, a perfect clinical model replicating human liver diseases is yet to be established, which is one of the major challenges in discovering proper therapeutics. The Dysphagia Handicap Index (DHI) is commonly utilized for evaluating how dysphagia impacts the quality of life (QoL) of patients across physical, functional, and emotional dimensions. The primary aim of the research was to linguistically validate and culturally adapt the DHI to the Bangla version. A cross-sectional study design was chosen, with Beaton's protocol as the guiding framework for validating and adapting the DHI. It has followed a systematic process of forward translation, participation in expert discussions, and subsequent back translation to obtain a reviewed version. The Bangla version, DHI-Ban, was administered purposefully to 50 dysphagia patients in the Clinical Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) Department of the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed (CRP) and was also administered to 50 healthy individuals for comparison. Of the fifty, eighteen dysphagia subjects were assigned again after two weeks for the retest. The DHI-Ban demonstrated strong internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.89) and good test-retest reproducibility (ICC = 0.86). The Spearman test confirmed significant construct validity (p < 0.01), and the Wilcoxon test identified significant differences (p < 0.001) between patients and healthy individuals. Feedback from participants was also taken into account for acceptance and clarity. In conclusion, the adapted DHI-Ban has emerged to be a reliable patient-reported tool for assessing dysphagia in Bangla-speaking individuals. Heavy metal contamination of fish is a serious public health concern worldwide, including in Bangladesh. In this study, six commonly consumed fish species namely Hilsha (Tenualosa ilisha), Kachki (Corica soborna), Punti (Puntitus ticto), Taki (Channa punctatus), Meni (Nandus nandus), and Tengra (Mystus tengara) were analyzed for arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), and nickel (Ni), by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The fish samples were collected from wholesale markets in Dhaka city, the main business hub of Bangladesh where the fishes converged from countrywide and are redistributed to the whole city. The metal concentration varied among the studied fish species. Hilsha, the national fish of Bangladesh, contained the highest As among the other fishes of this study, whereas Zn, Cd, Cu, Mn, and Ni were the highest in Kachki, and Pb and Cr were the highest in Tengra. The probable source of metal accumulation in the fish species may be the river or marine water that can be contaminated by industrial waste, pesticide, and/or fertilizer use in agriculture and/or commercial fish feeds. All analyzed fish species showed serious heavy metal pollution, having high average pollution load index (APLI) values (> 1). The estimated daily intake (EDI) values for the metals were lower than the maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI). The hazard index (HI) for all the fish species was above 1 for adults, showing non-carcinogenic health risks. The target carcinogenic risk (TCR) values were below the acceptable limit (10 -4 ) for most of the metals, indicating safe for consumption with respect to the risk of cancer., Competing Interests: Declarations. In this work, Terminalia chebula leaf extract was used to synthesize CuO-Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles, which were then embedded in a rice straw biochar. This new biochar-based nano-catalyst is used to photocatalytically degrade a variety of dyes (Eosin Y, Trypan Blue, Crystal Violet, Methylene Blue, Brilliant Green), as well as a binary mixture of Eosin Y and Trypan Blue dyes. It is also used for the catalytic reduction of nitro compounds (4-NP, 3-NP, and Picric acid). To ascertain the structure, composition, and morphology of the CuO-Co 3 O 4 @BC photocatalyst, various analytical techniques were employed, including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Photoluminescence (PL) spectra, Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). The optical properties of the nanocatalyst sample were accurately assessed by the use of UV-Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (UV-DRS). The as-synthesized nanocatalyst's photocatalytic capacity was assessed by observing dye degradation in the presence of visible light. It suggests a significant reduction in the rate of recombination of electrons and holes and therefore better charge separation from the catalyst optical properties. It was discovered that the efficient photocatalytic activity of the nanocatalyst had been brought about as a result of the synergistic interactions that had occurred between the different moieties. The growing organic water pollutants Trypan Blue were found to deteriorate to 96.80 ± 1.25% in 21 min and Eosin Y to 98.12 ± 1.42% in 30 min by the photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. For the photodegradation, pseudo-first-order kinetics were employed, with specific reaction rate constant of 0.1068 min -1 and 0.1429 min -1 for EY and TB, respectively. Studies have also been conducted to determine the effects of additional variables on deteriorating performance, such as water matrices, beginning concentration, catalyst dose, and contact length. With high catalytic characteristics, the developed CuO-Co 3 O 4 @BC catalyst completes the reduction reactions of 4-NP, 3-NP, and Picric acid in 3, 2.5, and 5 min, respectively. An affordable CuO-Co 3 O 4 @BC is a potential catalyst for turning harmful nitro chemicals into useful products. Bacterial infections leading to bacteremia and septicemic shock constitute an emerging public health concern globally, especially in areas where sanitation is poor and safe drinking water is scarce. Enteric pathogens such as Vibrio cholerae are responsible for many deaths caused by contaminated food and water in these areas. While cholera is the prominent clinical threat posed by V. cholerae, outcomes like bacteremia turning into sepsis and associated morbidity and mortality have been increasing globally in recent times. Here, we report an alarming case of fatal sepsis with a probable association of V. cholerae bacteremia in Bangladesh. In September 2023, a 30-year-old man with a pre-condition of beta-thalassemia presented to a tertiary care hospital with acute diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and fever and died within 36 h of admission with acute cholecystitis, metabolic acidosis, acute kidney injury, pancytopenia, and refractory septic shock with multi-organ dysfunction syndrome. Blood culture detected V. cholerae, which was further characterized as hemolytic, carrying the hemolysin gene and genes for the virulence factor type-three secretion system. The isolate was confirmed as V. cholerae non-O1/O139 (NOVC), which differed in genetic properties from the few contemporary NOVC isolates associated with diarrheal cases in Bangladesh. To manage the diarrhea and septicemic condition, the patient was treated empirically with metronidazole and meropenem. However, antibiotic susceptibility testing showed the strain was susceptible to all the routinely prescribed drugs for V. cholerae infections. Background: Arsenic (As), found in diverse ecosystems, poses major public health risks in various parts of the world. Arsenotrophic bacteria in contaminated environments help reduce toxicity by converting arsenite (AsIII) to less harmful arsenate (AsV). We assumed that Achromobacter aegrifaciens strains from As-contaminated tubewell water and soil would share similar genomic characteristics associated with arsenic detoxification and bioremediation. To investigate this, we employed both culture-dependent and culture-independent viz. whole genome sequencing (WGS) methods to thoroughly elucidate the phenotypic and genotypic features of two A. aegrifaciens strains isolated from As-contaminated tubewell water (BAW48) and soil (BAS32) samples collected in the Bogura district of Bangladesh., Results: Both BAW48 and BAS32 isolates demonstrated As(III) oxidation in the KMNO4 test, which was corroborated by molecular analysis confirming the presence of aioA and arsB genes in both strains. These strains were found to be phylogenetically related to many strains of Achromobacter spp., isolated from biological inorganic reactors, environmental soils, sediments and human clinical samples across diverse geographical regions. Moreover, both strains possessed distinct heavy metal resistance genes conferring resistance to Co, Zn, Cu, Cd, Hg, As, and Cr. Three As gene clusters such as As(III) oxidizing aioBA, As(III) reducing arsRCDAB and the MMA(III) oxidizing ars resistance gene (arsHCsO) cluster were predicted in both genomes of A. aegrifaciens. Further genomic analyses revealed similar profiles in both strains, with mobile genetic elements, antimicrobials and heavy metal resistance genes, virulence genes, and metabolic features. Pangenome and synteny analysis showed that the two genomes are evolutionary distinct from other strains, but closely related to one another., Conclusion: The genomic data confirmed that A. aegrifaciens strains can oxidize As(III) and detoxify heavy metals like As, suggesting their potential for As detoxification and bioremediation. Doublesex and Mab-3 (DMRT) gene family is a diverse group of transcriptional factors crucially involved in sex differentiation and biological processes such as body growth and differentiation in vertebrates. In this study, we analyzed DMRT genes structural characterization and physiochemical properties, and elucidated their functional role as a ligand of different gonadal receptors including androgen (AR), estrogen β (ER-β), estrogen γ (ER-γ), and progesterone (PR). All six genes of the DMRT gene family in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon Idella Valenciennes, 1844) exhibited an acidic nature. These DMRT genes are primarily localized in the nucleus, where they play a role in DNA binding via doublesex DNA binding motif. All the DMRT gene pairs are under strong purifying selection with two segmental duplications envisaged about 18.30 (DMRT3a/DMRTA2) and 24.90 (DMRT2b/DMRT2a) million years ago (MYA). Recombination analysis revealed six potential recombinant breakpoints posing substantial evolutionary pressure for diverse cellular functioning of DMRT isoforms. Moreover, the DMRTA1 protein had a highest binding affinity of - 270.42 and - 267.16 for androgen receptors (AR) and progesterone receptors (PR), whereas, for estrogen receptors ER-β and ER-γ, the maximum binding affinity was observed with DMRT2a and DMRT2b proteins showing a docking score of - 254.22 and - 261.71, respectively. First time we studied the binding scores and interface residues of the DMRT genes as a ligand of gonadal receptors that play a crucial role in fish growth, sex development and differentiation, and spermatogenesis and oocyte maturation. Community-based interventions (CBIs) can be effective and feasible for the prevention of childhood obesity. The aim of this umbrella review is to determine if systematic reviews report sufficient information to guide replication or adaptation of CBIs to a variety of contexts and aid in further development of childhood obesity prevention CBIs. Six databases were searched for systematic reviews including obesity prevention CBIs involving 0-18 year olds and reporting weight-related outcomes. Two researchers screened results. Evidence-to-decision frameworks guided which details may be required for decision-makers to design and carry-out a CBI, including information on intervention characteristics, outcome reporting and translation factors. From 3935 search results, 40 studies were included. The most frequently reported relevant pieces of information were behaviors targeted (100% of systematic reviews), intervention duration (90%) and settings involved (97.5%). Less frequently reported factors included specific actions implemented (48%), intervention intensity (30%) and organizations, or contributors involved (40%). There was a low level of reporting of equity considerations (27.5%), adverse events (20%), and costs/cost-effectiveness (17.5%). Despite the considerable health and economic burden of disability in the South Asian (SA) region, there is limited evidence of impairments and disabilities prevalence and the need for Assistive Technologies (ATs). This scoping review aims to synthesise the evidence of the impairments and disabilities in SA countries. This review followed Arksey and O'Malley's methodological framework. EBSCOhost, EMBASE, PubMed, and Web of Science databases were searched for original research articles from SA countries. In this study, impairment and disability refer to functional limitations restricting individuals from performing activities, including visual, hearing, speaking, cognitive, mobility, and self-care difficulties. The review included full-text, English-language articles addressing any impairment and disability, without restrictions on publication date. This review identified 105 articles distributed over the six impairment and disability domains: visual, hearing, mobility, self-care, speaking, and cognitive. Most evidence originated from India (50.5%) and focused on visual impairments (53.3%). The review identified that heterogeneity in methodologies, case identification definitions, and study settings contributed to variations in prevalence estimation and restricted the comparability within and across countries. Besides, the uneven distribution of studies across countries suggests varying inclinations of countries toward specific impairment and disability domains. The review identified variations in prevalence due to differences in methodologies, definitions, and contexts. The review also identified the uneven distribution of studies, limited evidence on ATs, reliance on self-reported data, and lack of nationally representative research. Future research should use standardised case identification and evidence-based approaches to enhance comparability and minimise response biases.

We report the draft genome of an arsenotrophic Achromobacter aegrifaciens BAS32 isolated from arsenic (As)-contaminated soil in Bangladesh. We systematically analyzed BMP gene family in H. sapiens to elucidate genetic structure, phylogenetic relationships, adaptive evolution and tissue-specific expression pattern. Total of 13 BMPs genes were identified in the H. sapiens genome. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are composed of a variable number of exons ranging from 2 to 21. They exhibit a molecular weight ranging from 31,081.81 to 82,899.61 Da. These proteins possess hydrophilic characteristics, display thermostability, and exhibit a pH range from acidic to basic. We identified four segmental and two tandem duplication events in BMP gene family of H. sapiens. All of the vertebrate species that were studied show the presence of BMPs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8A, and 15, however only Homo sapiens demonstrated the presence of BMP9 and BMP11. The pathway and process enrichment analysis of BMPs genes showed that these were considerably enriched in positive regulation of pathway-restricted SMAD protein phosphorylation (92%) and cartilage development (77%) biological processes. These genes exhibited positive selection signals that were shown to be conserved across vertebrate lineages. The results showed that BMP2/3/5/6/8a/15 proteins underwent adaptive selection at many amino acid locations and increased positive selection was detected in TGF-β propeptide and TGF-β super family domains which were involved in dorso-ventral patterning, limb bud development. More over the expression pattern of BMP genes revealed that BMP1 and BMP5; BMP4 and BMP6 exhibited substantially identical expression patterns in all tissues while BMP10, BMP15, and BMP3 showed tissue-specific expression., (© 2023. Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a great havoc in agri-business-based countries like Bangladesh, for which existing detection system limits the identification and differentiation of serotypes. In this study, an engineered platform was introduced incorporating serotype-specific FMDV VP1 (structural), serotype-independent VP2 (structural) and 3AB (non-structural) proteins for holistic detection. VP1 sequences were engineered combining sequences of BAN/TA/Dh-301/2016 (serotype O), BAN/CH/Sa-304/2016 (serotype A) and BAN/DH/Sa-318/2016 (serotype Asia1). Consensus 3AB sequence was constructed from the selected prevalent viral genomes. Both VP1 and 3AB along with designed VP2 sequences were optimized for codon usage bias, stable mRNA, secondary and tertiary protein structure. Proteins were synthesized in pET-21a ( +) plasmid vector followed by transformation of Escherichia coli BL21(DE3) and IPTG-induced- expression. The western blot analysis of engineered proteins showed that purified VP1 prominently bound to anti-VP1 antibodies in vaccinated sera, whereas 3AB and VP2 bound anti-3AB and anti-VP2 antibodies, respectively from infected cattle sera, all previously collected during epidemiological investigation. Furthermore, dot blot hybridization confirmed efficient antibody capture ability of the membrane-immobilized proteins. This holistic diagnostic platform justifies a comprehensive prototype diagnostic kit that would be cost-effective and efficient for serotype specific and non-specific FMDV sero-surveillance., (© 2024. Community-based interventions (CBIs) show promise as effective and cost-effective obesity prevention initiatives. CBIs are typically complex interventions, including multiple settings, strategies and stakeholders. Cost-effectiveness evidence, however, generally only considers a narrow range of costs and benefits associated with anthropometric outcomes. While it is recognised that the complexity of CBIs may result in broader non-health societal and community benefits, the identification, measurement, and quantification of these outcomes is limited. This study aimed to understand the perspectives of stakeholders on the broader benefits of CBIs and their measurement, as well as perceptions of CBI cost-effectiveness. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants from three stakeholder groups (lead researchers, funders, and community stakeholders of CBIs). Online semi-structured interviews were conducted, taking a constructivist approach. Coding, theme development and analysis were based on published guidance for thematic analysis. Twenty-six stakeholders participated in the interviews (12 lead researchers; 7 funders; 6 community stakeholders). Six key themes emerged; (1) Impacts of CBIs (health impacts and broader impacts); (2) Broader benefits were important to stakeholders; (3) Measurement of benefits are challenging; (4) CBIs were considered cost-effective; (5) Framing CBIs for community engagement (6) Making equitable impacts and sustaining changes-successes and challenges. Across all stakeholders, broader benefits, particularly the establishment of networks and partnerships within communities, were seen as important outcomes of CBIs. Participants viewed the CBI approach to obesity prevention as cost-effective, however, there were challenges in measuring, quantifying and valuing broader benefits. Ion-sensitive field-effect transistors (ISFETs) have emerged as indispensable tools in chemosensing applications 1-4 . ISFETs operate by converting changes in the composition of chemical solutions into electrical signals, making them ideal for environmental monitoring 5,6 , healthcare diagnostics 7 and industrial process control 8 . Recent advancements in ISFET technology, including functionalized multiplexed arrays and advanced data analytics, have improved their performance 9,10 . Here we illustrate the advantages of incorporating machine learning algorithms to construct predictive models using the extensive datasets generated by ISFET sensors for both classification and quantification tasks. This integration also sheds new light on the working of ISFETs beyond what can be derived solely from human expertise. Furthermore, it mitigates practical challenges associated with cycle-to-cycle, sensor-to-sensor and chip-to-chip variations, paving the way for the broader adoption of ISFETs in commercial applications. Specifically, we use data generated by non-functionalized graphene-based ISFET arrays to train artificial neural networks that possess a remarkable ability to discern instances of food fraud, food spoilage and food safety concerns. We anticipate that the fusion of compact, energy-efficient and reusable graphene-based ISFET technology with robust machine learning algorithms holds the potential to revolutionize the detection of subtle chemical and environmental changes, offering swift, data-driven insights applicable across a wide spectrum of applications., (© 2024.
