The article discusses the computation of mathematical quantities through mental arithmetic. Defined by Otto Schulz, mental arithmetic is different from written arithmetic because in mental arithmetic everyone conceives of the numbers as best he can. Most importantly he does not work by the rules which were called forth by the representation of the numbers in figure, he only ciphers according to their relations. With this regard, it is suggested that all arithmetic must begin with mental work.
