Instanton bundles on $\mathbb{P}^3$ have been at the core of the research in Algebraic Geometry during the last thirty years. Motivated by the recent extension of their definition to other Fano threefolds of Picard number one, we develop the theory of instanton bundles on the complete flag variety $F:=F(0,1,2)$ of point-lines on $\mathbb{P}^2$. After giving for them two different monadic presentations, we use it to show that the moduli space $MI_F(k)$ of instanton bundles of charge $k$ is a geometric GIT quotient and the open subspace $MI^s_F(k)\subset MI_F(k)$ of stable instanton bundles has a generically smooth component of dim $8k-3$. Finally we study their locus of jumping conics., Comment: 28 pages. Improved exposition. Accepted in Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa - Classe di Scienze

156. Game Invention as Means to Stimulate Probabilistic Thinking

- Abstract
In this paper, we make a qualitative analysis of didactic experiments performed with five 6 to 10-year-old children and five primary school teachers, starting from a structured game with probabilistic elements. The fundamental idea is to stimulate probabilistic thinking not only by playing a card game with decision making in uncertain situations, but by inventing games modifying the initial game. These experiments are grounded on the importance of emotions for learning, the subjective probability approach, and researches on problem posing. We have found that this activity of inventing games has a significant impact on the development of probabilistic thinking in children and teachers; it reduces the anxiety and it could be used in teaching strategies to foster statistical and probability literacy. Some of its positive effects are the strengthening of creativity, self-efficacy, self-esteem, the ability to ask questions, and the enjoyment of learning.

The latent structure of schizotypy and psychosis-spectrum symptoms remains poorly understood. Furthermore, molecular genetic substrates are poorly defined, largely due to the substantial resources required to collect rich phenotypic data across diverse populations. Sample sizes of phenotypic studies are often insufficient for advanced structural equation modeling approaches. In the last 50 years, efforts in both psychiatry and psychological science have moved toward (1) a dimensional model of psychopathology (eg, the current Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology [HiTOP] initiative), (2) an integration of methods and measures across traits and units of analysis (eg, the RDoC initiative), and (3) powerful, impactful study designs maximizing sample size to detect subtle genomic variation relating to complex traits (the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium [PGC]). These movements are important to the future study of the psychosis spectrum, and to resolving heterogeneity with respect to instrument and population. The International Consortium of Schizotypy Research is composed of over 40 laboratories in 12 countries, and to date, members have compiled a body of schizotypy- and psychosis-related phenotype data from more than 30000 individuals. It has become apparent that compiling data into a protected, relational database and crowdsourcing analytic and data science expertise will result in significant enhancement of current research on the structure and biological substrates of the psychosis spectrum. The authors present a data-sharing infrastructure similar to that of the PGC, and a resource-sharing infrastructure similar to that of HiTOP. This report details the rationale and benefits of the phenotypic data collective and presents an open invitation for participation.

Our microbial cotravelers have increasingly apparent roles in both maintaining health and causing disease in several organ systems. Investigators gather annually at the National Institutes of Health to present new discoveries regarding the role of the microbiome in human health and a special focus on persons living with HIV. Here, we summarize the discussions from the third annual Virology Education workshop on the microbiome in HIV, which took place in October of 2017.

In this study, we compared transplantation outcomes of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in patients with advanced myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) who received a CD34+ cell-selected and those who received an unmodified allograft. This analysis initially included 181 patients, 60 who received a CD34+ cell-selected transplant and 121 who received an unmodified transplant. Owing to significant differences in disease characteristics, the analysis was limited to patients with

The goal of this paper is to start a study of aCM and Ulrich sheaves on non-integral projective varieties. We show that any aCM vector bundle of rank two on the double plane is a direct sum of line bundles. As a by-product, any aCM vector bundle of rank two on a sufficiently high dimensional quadric hypersurface also splits. We consider aCM and Ulrich vector bundles on a multiple hyperplanes and prove the existence of such bundles that do not split, if the multiple hyperplane is linearly embedded into a sufficiently high dimensional projective space. Then we restrict our attention to the double plane and give a classification of aCM sheaves of rank at most $3/2$ on the double plane and describe the family of isomorphism classes of them., Comment: 33 pages; Major changes in Section 3, 4 and 7; several typos corrected; Comments welcome

Commensal organisms appear to play significant roles in normal homeostasis as well as in the pathogenesis of HIV infection in a number of different organ systems. On November 17th and 18th, 2016, leading researchers from around the world met to discuss their insights on advances in our understanding of HIV and the microbiome at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda. Dr. Elhanan Borenstein of the University of Washington gave a keynote address where he discussed new developments in systems biology which hold the promise of illuminating the pathways by which these organisms interact with human physiology. He suggested that we need to get past correlations in microbiome research by using models and informatics which incorporate metagenomics to predict functional changes in the microbiome.

Here we present a commentary on the role of small-scale (e.g., few tens of meters) wave-particle interactions in large-scale (e.g., few tens of kilometers) processes and their capacity to accelerate particles from thermal to suprathermal or even to cosmic-ray energies. The purpose of this commentary is to provoke thought and further investigation into the relative importance of electromagnetic waves in the global dynamics of many macroscopic systems. We specifically focus on the terrestrial radiation belts and collisionless shock waves as examples., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, updated version changes: more references, changed phrasing, and added a formal abstract

Cucurbiturils are particularly interesting to chemists, because these macrocyclic molecules are suitable hosts for an array of neutral and cationic species. It is believed that the host-guest binding originated from hydrophobic interactions and ion-dipole interactions in the case of cationic guests. The fact that an elementary unit of cucurbiturils consists of two fused imidazole rings, which ionize readily, has remained largely unnoticed up to now. This work reports ionized cucurbiturils and their binding to C60 fullerene using versatile electronic-precision description. The methodology is based on density functional theory. We assert that cationization of cucurbiturils fosters C60-cucurbituril binding due to polarization of electron density in C60. Therefore, more stable host-guest complexes can be derived.

In the present paper we completely classify locally free sheaves of rank $2$ with vanishing intermediate cohomology modules on the image of the Segre embedding $\mathbb{P}^2\times\mathbb{P}^2\subseteq\mathbb{P}^8$ and its general hyperplane sections. Such a classification extends similar already known results regarding del Pezzo varieties with Picard numbers $1$ and $3$ and dimension at least $3$., Comment: 23 pages, 1 figure. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1306.6008

We performed a genome-wide association study of 6447 bipolar disorder (BD) cases and 12 639 controls from the International Cohort Collection for Bipolar Disorder (ICCBD). Meta-analysis was performed with prior results from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium Bipolar Disorder Working Group for a combined sample of 13 902 cases and 19 279 controls. We identified eight genome-wide significant, associated regions, including a novel associated region on chromosome 10 (rs10884920; P=3.28 × 10-8) that includes the brain-enriched cytoskeleton protein adducin 3 (ADD3), a non-coding RNA, and a neuropeptide-specific aminopeptidase P (XPNPEP1). Our large sample size allowed us to test the heritability and genetic correlation of BD subtypes and investigate their genetic overlap with schizophrenia and major depressive disorder. We found a significant difference in heritability of the two most common forms of BD (BD I SNP-h2=0.35; BD II SNP-h2=0.25; P=0.02). The genetic correlation between BD I and BD II was 0.78, whereas the genetic correlation was 0.97 when BD cohorts containing both types were compared. In addition, we demonstrated a significantly greater load of polygenic risk alleles for schizophrenia and BD in patients with BD I compared with patients with BD II, and a greater load of schizophrenia risk alleles in patients with the bipolar type of schizoaffective disorder compared with patients with either BD I or BD II. These results point to a partial difference in the genetic architecture of BD subtypes as currently defined.

The role of microbiota in the pathogenesis of HIV infection has become the subject of intense research in recent years. A rapidly growing amount of data suggest that microbial dysbiosis-in the gut or the genital tract-can influence HIV transmission and/or disease progression; however, a deeper understanding of the mechanisms involved is lacking. To better understand the relationship between the microbiome and HIV infection, investigators from a wide variety of disciplines, including those working in basic and clinical HIV studies, cardiovascular disease, reproductive health, and bioinformatics, gathered at the first International Workshop on Microbiome in HIV Pathogenesis, Prevention and Treatment, at NIH on 7 and 8 April, 2015.

To elucidate the genetic architecture of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and find associated loci, we assembled a custom imputation reference panel from whole-genome-sequenced patients with ALS and matched controls (n = 1,861). Through imputation and mixed-model association analysis in 12,577 cases and 23,475 controls, combined with 2,579 cases and 2,767 controls in an independent replication cohort, we fine-mapped a new risk locus on chromosome 21 and identified C21orf2 as a gene associated with ALS risk. In addition, we identified MOBP and SCFD1 as new associated risk loci. We established evidence of ALS being a complex genetic trait with a polygenic architecture. Furthermore, we estimated the SNP-based heritability at 8.5%, with a distinct and important role for low-frequency variants (frequency 1-10%). This study motivates the interrogation of larger samples with full genome coverage to identify rare causal variants that underpin ALS risk.

We provide two examples of smooth projective surfaces of tame CM type, by showing that any parameter space of isomorphism classes of indecomposable ACM bundles with fixed rank and determinant on a rational quartic scroll in projective 5-space is either a single point or a projective line. For surfaces of minimal degree and wild CM type, we classify rigid Ulrich bundles as Fibonacci extensions. For the rational normal scrolls S(2,3) and S(3,3), a complete classification of rigid ACM bundles is given in terms of the action of the braid group in three strands., Comment: This version is meant to amend two inaccurate statements appearing in the published paper

Mathematics - Algebraic Geometry - Abstract
We describe a vector bundle $\sE$ on a smooth $n$-dimensional ACM variety in terms of its cohomological invariants $H^i_*(\sE)$, $1\leq i \leq n-1$, and certain graded modules of "socle elements" built from $\sE$. In this way we give a generalization of the Horrocks correspondence. We prove existence theorems where we construct vector bundles from these invariants and uniqueness theorems where we show that these data determine a bundle up to isomorphisms. The cases of the quadric hypersurface in $\mathbb P^{n+1}$ and the Veronese surface in $\mathbb P^5$ are considered in more detail., Comment: 18 pages, not figures

Substorms generally inject tens to hundreds of keV electrons, but intense substorm electric fields have been shown to inject MeV electrons as well. An intriguing question is whether such MeVelectron injections can populate the outer radiation belt. Here we present observations of a substorm injection of MeV electrons into the inner magnetosphere. In the premidnight sector at L ∼ 5.5, Van Allen Probes (Radiation Belt Storm Probes)-A observed a large dipolarization electric field (50 mV/m) over ∼40 s and a dispersionless injection of electrons up to ∼3 MeV. Pitch angle observations indicated betatron acceleration of MeV electrons at the dipolarization front. Corresponding signals of MeV electron injection were observed at LANL-GEO, THEMIS-D, and GOES at geosynchronous altitude. Through a series of dipolarizations, the injections increased the MeV electron phase space density by 1 order of magnitude in less than 3 h in the outer radiation belt (L > 4.8). Our observations provide evidence that deep injections can supply significant MeV electrons.

BackgroundThe consumption of sweetened beverages, refined foods, and pastries has been shown to be associated with an increased risk of depression in longitudinal studies. However, any influence that refined carbohydrates has on mood could be commensurate with their proportion in the overall diet; studies are therefore needed that measure overall intakes of carbohydrate and sugar, glycemic index (GI), and glycemic load.ObjectiveWe hypothesized that higher dietary GI and glycemic load would be associated with greater odds of the prevalence and incidence of depression.DesignThis was a prospective cohort study to investigate the relations between dietary GI, glycemic load, and other carbohydrate measures (added sugars, total sugars, glucose, sucrose, lactose, fructose, starch, carbohydrate) and depression in postmenopausal women who participated in the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study at baseline between 1994 and 1998 (n = 87,618) and at the 3-y follow-up (n = 69,954).ResultsWe found a progressively higher dietary GI to be associated with increasing odds of incident depression in fully adjusted models (OR for the fifth compared with first quintile: 1.22; 95% CI: 1.09, 1.37), with the trend being statistically significant (P = 0.0032). Progressively higher consumption of dietary added sugars was also associated with increasing odds of incident depression (OR for the fifth compared with first quintile: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.41; P-trend = 0.0029). Higher consumption of lactose, fiber, nonjuice fruit, and vegetables was significantly associated with lower odds of incident depression, and nonwhole/refined grain consumption was associated with increased odds of depression.ConclusionsThe results from this study suggest that high-GI diets could be a risk factor for depression in postmenopausal women. Randomized trials should be undertaken to examine the question of whether diets rich in low-GI foods could serve as treatments and primary preventive measures for depression in postmenopausal women.
