Abstract

Background: An increasing number of studies in Western countries have shown that healthy dietary patterns may have a protective effect against cognitive decline and dementia. However, information on this relationship among non-Western populations with different cultural settings is extremely limited. We aim to examine the relationship between dietary patterns and cognitive function among older Japanese people.Methods: This cross-sectional study included 635 community-dwelling people aged 69-71 years who participated in the prospective cohort study titled Septuagenarians, Octogenarians, Nonagenarians Investigation with Centenarians (SONIC). Diet was assessed over a one-month period with a validated, brief-type, self-administered diet history questionnaire. Dietary patterns from thirty-three predefined food groups [energy-adjusted food (g/d)] were extracted by factor analysis. Cognitive function was assessed using the Japanese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-J). Multivariate regression analysis was performed to examine the relationship between dietary patterns and cognitive function.Results: Three dietary patterns were identified: the 'Plant foods and fish', 'Rice and miso soup', and 'Animal food' patterns. The 'Plant foods and fish' pattern, characterized by high intakes of green and other vegetables, soy products, seaweeds, mushrooms, potatoes, fruit, fish, and green tea, was significantly associated with a higher MoCA-J score [MoCA-J score per one-quartile increase in dietary pattern: β = 0.56 (95% CI: 0.33, 0.79), P for trend <0.001]. This association was still evident after adjustment for potential confounding factors [β = 0.41 (95% CI: 0.17, 0.65), P for trend <0.001]. In contrast, neither the 'Rice and miso soup' nor the 'Animal food' pattern was related to cognitive function. To confirm the possibility of reverse causation we also conducted a sensitivity analysis excluding 186 subjects who reported substantial changes in their diet for any reason, but the results did not change materially.Conclusion: This preliminary cross-sectional study suggests that a diet with high intakes of vegetables, soy products, fruit, and fish may have a beneficial effect on cognitive function in older Japanese people. Abstract

Aim The present study examined sex and age differences in taste sensitivity among young adult, young-old and old-old Japanese. Methods Participants were divided into three groups comprising 477 men and 519 women in the young-old group (aged 69-71 years), 449 men and 500 women in the old-old group (aged 79-81 years), and 35 men and 35 women in the young adult group (aged 24-32 years). Recognition thresholds for the four basic tastes were measured using the 1-mL whole mouth gustatory test, in which taste solutions of the four basic tastes were tested in five concentrations. Results Young adults showed significantly lower recognition thresholds than the young-old group, and the young-old group showed significantly lower recognition thresholds than the old-old group. Among the young-old and old-old groups, women showed significantly lower recognition thresholds than males for sour, salty and bitter tastes, but there was no sex difference in the sweet taste threshold between the two groups. Conclusions The present study confirmed that there are age and sex differences in taste sensitivity for the four basic tastes among young adult, young-old, and old-old Japanese, and that the sensitivity of sweet taste is more robust than the other tastes. Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between lower extremity motor function and occlusion in older adults and to examine the possibility of dietary intake of protein mediating the association. DESIGN: Cross-sectional, population-based study. SETTING: Urban and rural area in Japan. PARTICIPANTS: Community-dwelling septuagenarians (N = 655) and octogenarians (N = 629). MEASUREMENTS: Information was collected on occlusal force, protein intake, grip strength, walking speed, sociodemographic characteristics, and medical history. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the association between walking speed, occlusal force, and protein intake, and structural equation modeling analysis and mediation analysis were performed to investigate the validity of the hypothesized model and identify the indirect effect of protein intake in occlusal force and walking speed. RESULTS: The proportion of participants whose walking speed was 0.8 m/s or slower (slow walking speed) was 27.7%. Logistic regression analyses showed that slower walking speed was associated with occlusal force (odds ratio = 1.57, P = .001) after adjusting for medical history, body mass index, grip strength, and protein intake. The fit of the hypothesized model that walking speed was associated with occlusal force through protein intake was good, and the indirect effect was significant. CONCLUSION: Slower walking speed was associated with lower occlusal force. Lower protein intake mediated the association between walking speed and occlusal force. Maintaining occlusal force might prevent insufficient nutrition intake and further deterioration of motor function in older people. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

196. The Relationship Between Social Interaction and Anxiety Regarding COVID-19 in Japanese Older Adults

Abstract

While previous studies suggest that women have higher anxiety than men regarding COVID-19, underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study tries to explain the mechanisms by gender difference in social interaction based on a theory of social amplification of risk framework (SARF). We surveyed older adults in Japan regarding their anxiety regarding COVID-19, as well as the frequencies of their direct and indirect social interaction in July 2020 (N= 1,587, aged 78–99 years). To explore the way in which gender and anxiety regarding COVID-19 were mediated by these two types of social interactions, MODEL4 of SPSS’s Process MACRO was applied to the data. We found that older women interacted more directly and indirectly with others than did older men. And, direct social interaction was negatively and related, but indirect social interaction was positively related to older adults’ anxiety regarding COVID-19. Furthermore, direct social interaction was related to older women’s low anxiety regarding COVID-19, whereas indirect social interaction was related to older women’s high anxiety regarding COVID-19. The findings of our study suggest that the degree of anxiety regarding COVID-19 among older women may be dependent upon the types of social interaction they have with others.

Abstract

Aim: In our previous study, we proposed that the total score of the 12 frailty‐related items in the health assessment questionnaire for the national screening program for older adults could be used as an indicator of frailty. We aim to examine the criterion validity of the 12 frailty‐related items for frailty. Methods: The data used in this study were from older Japanese individuals aged 78–81 years (n = 461) who participated in the in‐venue (2019) and mailed questionnaire (2020) surveys of the Septuagenarians, Octogenarians, Nonagenarians Investigation with Centenarians study. A receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the criterion validity of the 12 frailty‐related items for frailty defined based on the Japanese version of the Cardiovascular Health Study criteria. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to examine the independent association of the 12 frailty‐related items with frailty. Results: The area under the ROC curve of the scores of the 12 frailty‐related items for frailty was 0.79 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.73–0.85, P < 0.001). The cut‐off value for frailty was 3 and 4 points, and the sensitivity and specificity were 55.9% and 85.8%, respectively. The multivariable logistic regression model showed that four or more scores of the 12 frailty‐related items were significantly associated with frailty (adjusted odds ratio = 7.75, 95% CI = 4.10–14.65, P < 0.001). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the 12 frailty‐related items in the health assessment questionnaire for older adults may be useful for assessing frailty in community‐dwelling older adults in a simplified manner. Abstract

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between personality traits and participation in mass health checkups among Japanese community-dwelling elderly. Methods: A data set of 327 men and 519 women aged 70 years and over was used in the analysis. The NEO Five-Factor Inventory was administered to assess the “big five” personality traits: neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. Results: In multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusted for gender, age, number of years of education, living alone, presence of psychiatric diseases, presence of chronic diseases, and history of hospitalization during a 1-year period, openness was independently associated with participation in mass health checkups [odds ratio (OR)=1.51, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.08–2.12, P<.01 and OR=1.38, 95% CI=0.96–1.97, P=.07 for the middle and highest tertile, respectively]. No other domains of personality were related to participation in the checkups. Conclusions: The results of the present study suggest that older individuals high in openness are likely to take part in checkups for the elderly. Our findings could help improve the participation rate in mass health checkups for the prevention of long-term care dependence in later life. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
