156. Human immunodeficiency virus seropositivity in adolescents with syphilis.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between syphilis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among inner-city, minority group adolescents. METHODS. From August 1989 through June 1990, serum from all positive serologic tests for syphilis, obtained from patients attending a comprehensive adolescent health center in an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome epicenter and its two school-based clinics, were frozen without patient identifiers and were subsequently screened for HIV by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with confirmatory Western blot for positives. In addition, a retrospective chart review was performed for all patients with a positive serologic test for syphilis during the study period. RESULTS. Of the 59 specimens with a positive syphilis serologic test, 9 (15.3%) were HIV seropositive. Of the patients with syphilis, 57.4% were black and 42.6% were Hispanic; 16.4% were male (mean age 18.1) and 83.6% were female (mean age 17.8). Only 1 subject (female) was an injection drug user; 4 of the male subjects self-identified as having had sex with other males. Of the subjects, 27.8% had primary, 19.7% had secondary, and 52.5% had latent syphilis at the time of diagnosis. A prior or concurrent sexually transmitted disease was present in 90% of the males and 80% of the females; gonorrhea was the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease in the males (89%) and chlamydia was most prevalent in the females (35%). A history of chancroid and/or herpes was present in 16.4% of the subjects. CONCLUSIONS. It is concluded that the diagnosis of syphilis in an adolescent is a risk factor for HIV infection. All sexually active adolescents should be routinely screened for syphilis, regardless of sexual practices. Those with syphilis should be specifically counseled about their increased risk for HIV infection and the importance of consistent condom use, and they should be referred for formal HIV pretest counseling. Abstract

To determine the presence of cardiac disease in hypertensive patients with disparities between physician and out-of-office blood pressures, we prospectively studied three groups of age-matched patients identified by both casual (office) and ambulatory blood pressures: (1) office blood pressure greater than 140/90 mm Hg and awake ambulatory blood pressure of 130/80 mm Hg or less ("office" hypertensives); (2) office blood pressure less than 135/85 mm Hg and awake ambulatory blood pressure of 130/80 mm Hg or less (normotensives); and (3) office blood pressure greater than 140/90 mm Hg and awake ambulatory blood pressure of 140/90 mm Hg or greater ("daytime" hypertensives). In the patients with office hypertension, both the left atrial index and left ventricular mass index were significantly less than in patients with daytime hypertension and not statistically different from those of the normotensive subjects. Left ventricular filling rate at rest and ejection fraction at peak exercise were significantly greater in the office hypertensive group than in the daytime hypertensive group but were no different from those of the normotensive subjects. These findings demonstrate that patients with blood pressure elevation only in the physician's office have cardiac size and function similar to those of normotensive individuals. 164. Synthesis and Structural and Magnetic Characterization of Mixed Manganese-Copper n 1 Ruddlesden-Popper Phases

Abstract

New n 1 Ruddlesden-Popper phases containing manganese and copper have been synthesized. Their structure has been investigated by X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and found to be tetragonal (I4/mmm) at temperatures down to 10 K. The series of materials LaxSr2-xMn0.5Cu0.5O4(x 0.75, 1, 1.25, 1.5) displays significant Jahn-Teller distortions of the B site cations, with the degree of distortion increasing with x. The materials LaSrMn0.5Cu0.5O4, PrSrMn0.5Cu0.5O4, and NdSrMn0.5Cu0.5O4show interesting magnetic behavior with antiferromagnetic ordering, but evidence of some ferromagnetic interactions. LaSrMn0.5Cu0.5O4has long-range antiferromagnetic ordering and La1.5Sr0.5Mn0.5Cu0.5O4shows more complex behavior due to competing interactions, possibly resulting in a canted magnetic ground state.

165. Structural and magnetic characterisation of Bi2Sr1.4La0.6Nb2MnO12and its relationship to “Bi2Sr2Nb2MnO12”

Abstract

A new Aurivillius phase generic formula M2An−1BnO3n3 has been synthesized with n 3 and containing manganese, Bi2Sr1.4La0.6Nb2MnO12. The structure has been investigated by X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and found to be tetragonal I4mmm at temperatures down to 2 K, with a 3.899707 Å, c 32.80739 Å at 2 K. There is significant cation disorder between Bi3predominantly on the M sites and Sr2and La3which prefer the A sites: 192 of Bi3occupy the A sites. This disorder, leading to occupancy of M sites by Sr2, is thought to relieve strain due to size-mismatch between the fluorite-like and perovskite-like blocks. A high level of order exists between Mn and Nb on the B sites, with Mn located predominantly 76.16 in the central B site whilst Nb preferentially occupies the lower symmetry, outer B site, where it undergoes an out-of-centre displacement towards the fluorite-like blocks. Magnetic measurements indicate that this material displays spin-glass behaviour on cooling. Synthesis of the Mn4analogue Bi2Sr2Nb2MnO12was unsuccessful, possibly due to the small size of the Mn4cation.

Abstract

The adrenal hypoplasia congenita (AHC) and glycerol kinase (GK) loci are telomeric to the Duchenne muscular dystrophy locus in Xp21. We developed a pair of yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) contigs spanning at least 1.2 Mb and encompassing the region from the telomeric end of the Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) locus to beyond YHX39 (DXS727), including the genes for AHC and GK. The centromeric contig consists of 13 YACs reaching more than 600 kb from DMD through GK. The telomeric contig group consists of 8 YACs containing more than 600 kb including the markers YHX39 (DXS727) and QST-59 (DXS319). Patient deletion breakpoints in the region of the two YAC contigs define at least eight intervals, and seven deletion breakpoints are contained within these contigs. In addition to the probes developed from YAC ends, we have mapped eight Alu-PCR probes amplified from a radiation-reduced somatic cell hybrid, two anonymous DNA probes, and one Alu-PCR product amplified from a cosmid end, for a total of 26 new markers within this region of 2 Mb or less. One YAC in the centromeric contig contains an insert encompassing the minimum interval for GK deficiency defined by patient deletion breakpoints, and this clone includes all or part of the GK gene. Abstract

A combined wind tunnel/computer analysis was undertaken to evaluate the aerodynamic feasibility for airborne recovery of a fixed-wing remotely piloted vehicle (RPV). A mpa of aerodynamic loads interacting on the aircraft and RPV was obtained in the wind tunnel. The flow field was then represented mathematically and used to evaluate the aerodynamic feasibility of airborne retrieval. It was concluded that retrieval forward of the aircraft is potentially dangerous, unless a separation of more than two meters is maintained; retrieval aft of the aircraft is aerodynamically safe without restriction. In addition, it was determined that the primary effect of the aircraft flow field on the RPV was in the pitch plane. (Author)

Abstract

Based on interview and observational data of contract formation and administration dealing with hardware and publications development by the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command, the social process of government contract law as an example of law in action is compared with the typical use of contracts between merchants in the private sector. While the formal law of contracts is, for the most part, irrelevant in normal business exchanges, the formal legal structure is found to be routinely relied upon in the case of government contracts. This unusual role of the formal law is explained by the absence of normal reciprocal relationships between contractors and the Government. Abstract

Read before the Society, 8 April 1949., The practice of adoption is as old as history. It was known to the Babylonians and Greeks, and, coming closer to our own age, we can turn to the omniscient Shakespeare who, in Othello, puts into the lips of the Moor's father-in-law these words ?I had rather to adopt a child than get it?. It is curious that such a long-founded process should only have been recognised by law during our generation and even then only in enlightened countries such as Canada, USA, England, Belgium, France and some others excluding, I regret to say, our own country. It is surprising how many of our fellow-citizens are ignorant of the absence of this law and synonymously how loosely the term ?adoption? is used here. The fact that at present agreements are drawn up by solicitors to cover the transfer of children must tend to delude one, but in fact these agreements are completely invalid in law and can have merely psychological value. I shall, therefore, try to avoid using only the customary word ?adoption? during this paper but will use it with the prefix ?semi? to distinguish the status quo from what I hope an enlightened public will demand for the future.

Abstract

Liquid crystal (LC) microlenses have a variable focal length with a change in applied voltage. These lenses have suitable dimensions and focal length variations for a wide range of applications where the absence of moving parts is favored. In this article we present the three-dimensional imaging of the emerging light fields from these lenses for the first time. This novel technique is evaluated as a measure of the optical performance of the microlenses. It is compared with the results obtained on an interferometer custom built for the investigation of the optical properties of micro-optics. These combined results make this the most detailed investigation of the optical properties of liquid crystal microlenses to date. The results are centered on a microlens with a diameter of 60 μm at the lower (0.09) and higher (0.11) numerical apertures achievable with these lenses. In previous studies on LC microlens cells the main area of investigation was the focal length ranges available for particular applications. Images have been taken with these lenses and interference patterns between the extraordinary and ordinary rays propagating through the cells have been presented to show the lensing properties of the cells. However, a detailed examination of their optical properties show that although this type of lenses can produce images at certain voltages they act as diffraction limited lenses only over a short voltage range. It is also shown that the optical properties can be improved by variation of the driving frequency of the applied voltage. © 2006 American Institute of Physics.
