Describing hadronic structure is one of the most intriguing problems in physics. In this respect, generalized parton distributions (GPDs) constitute an outstanding tool, allowing to draw "three dimensional pictures" of hadron's inside. Starting from contemporary models for pion's GPDs fulfilling all constraints imposed by QCD, we compute Compton form factors (CFFs) of pions subjected to deeply virtual Compton scattering. We show the behaviour of CFFs to be gluon-dominated at EIC's kinematics. Self-supervised learning (SSL) aims to eliminate one of the major bottlenecks in representation learning - the need for human annotations. As a result, SSL holds the promise to learn representations from data in-the-wild, i.e., without the need for finite and static datasets. Instead, true SSL algorithms should be able to exploit the continuous stream of data being generated on the internet or by agents exploring their environments. But do traditional self-supervised learning approaches work in this setup? In this work, we investigate this question by conducting experiments on the continuous self-supervised learning problem. While learning in the wild, we expect to see a continuous (infinite) non-IID data stream that follows a non-stationary distribution of visual concepts. The goal is to learn a representation that can be robust, adaptive yet not forgetful of concepts seen in the past. We show that a direct application of current methods to such continuous setup is 1) inefficient both computationally and in the amount of data required, 2) leads to inferior representations due to temporal correlations (non-IID data) in some sources of streaming data and 3) exhibits signs of catastrophic forgetting when trained on sources with non-stationary data distributions. We propose the use of replay buffers as an approach to alleviate the issues of inefficiency and temporal correlations. We further propose a novel method to enhance the replay buffer by maintaining the least redundant samples. Minimum redundancy (MinRed) buffers allow us to learn effective representations even in the most challenging streaming scenarios composed of sequential visual data obtained from a single embodied agent, and alleviates the problem of catastrophic forgetting when learning from data with non-stationary semantic distributions.

A stellar occultation occurs when a Solar System object passes in front of a star for an observer. This technique allows the determination of sizes and shapes of the occulting body with kilometer precision. Also, this technique constrains the occulting body's positions, albedos, densities, etc. In the context of the Galilean moons, these events can provide their best ground-based astrometry, with uncertainties in the order of 1 mas ($\sim$ 3 km at Jupiter's distance during opposition). We organized campaigns and successfully observed a stellar occultation by Io (JI) in 2021, one by Ganymede (JIII) in 2020, and one by Europa (JII) in 2019, with stations in North and South America. Also, we re-analyzed two previously published events, one by Europa in 2016 and another by Ganymede in 2017. Then, we fit the known 3D shape of the occulting satellite and determine its center of figure. That resulted in astrometric positions with uncertainties in the milliarcsecond level. The positions obtained from these stellar occultations can be used together with dynamical models to ensure highly accurate orbits of the Galilean moons. These orbits can help plan future space probes aiming at the Jovian system, such as JUICE by ESA and Europa Clipper by NASA, and allow more efficient planning of flyby maneuvers., Comment: 19 pages, 25 figures, Accepted on March 14, 2022 for publication in The Astronomical Journal

Unsupervised audio-visual source localization aims at localizing visible sound sources in a video without relying on ground-truth localization for training. Previous works often seek high audio-visual similarities for likely positive (sounding) regions and low similarities for likely negative regions. However, accurately distinguishing between sounding and non-sounding regions is challenging without manual annotations. In this work, we propose a simple yet effective approach for Easy Visual Sound Localization, namely EZ-VSL, without relying on the construction of positive and/or negative regions during training. Instead, we align audio and visual spaces by seeking audio-visual representations that are aligned in, at least, one location of the associated image, while not matching other images, at any location. We also introduce a novel object guided localization scheme at inference time for improved precision. Our simple and effective framework achieves state-of-the-art performance on two popular benchmarks, Flickr SoundNet and VGG-Sound Source. In particular, we improve the CIoU of the Flickr SoundNet test set from 76.80% to 83.94%, and on the VGG-Sound Source dataset from 34.60% to 38.85%. One of the most active research fields in single-pixel imaging is the influence of the sampling basis and its order in the quality of the reconstructed images. This paper presents two new orders, ascending scale (AS) and ascending inertia (AI), of the Hadamard basis and test their performance, using simulation and experimental methods, for low sampling ratios (0.5 to 0.01). These orders were compared with two state-of-the-art orders, cake-cutting (CC) and total gradient (TG), using TVAL3 as the reconstruction algorithm and three noise levels. These newly proposed orders have better reconstructed image quality on the simulation data set (110 images) and achieved structure similarity index values higher than CC order. The experimental data set (2 images) showed that the AS and AI orders performed better with a sampling ratio of 0.5, while for lower sampling ratio the performance of AS, AI and CC was similar. The TG order performed worst in the majority of the cases. Finally, the simulation results present clear evidence that peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) is not a reliable image quality assessment (IQA) metric to assess image reconstruction quality in the context of single pixel imaging.

In this work we present a generalised viscoelastic model using distributed-order derivatives. The model consists of two distributed-order elements (distributed springpots) connected in series, as in the Maxwell model. The new model generalises the fractional viscoelastic model presented in [H. Schiessel, A. Blumen, Hierarchical analogues to fractional relaxation equations, Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and General 26 (1993) 5057-50] and allows for a more broad and accurate description of complex fluids when a proper weighting function of the order of the derivatives is chosen. We discuss the connection between classical, fractional, and viscoelastic models of distributed order and highlight the fundamental concepts that support these constitutive equations. We also derive the relaxation modulus, the storage and loss modulus, and the creep compliance for specific weighting functions.

A stellar occultation by Neptune's main satellite, Triton, was observed on 5 October 2017 from Europe, North Africa, and the USA. We derived 90 light curves from this event, 42 of which yielded a central flash detection. We aimed at constraining Triton's atmospheric structure and the seasonal variations of its atmospheric pressure since the Voyager 2 epoch (1989). We also derived the shape of the lower atmosphere from central flash analysis. We used Abel inversions and direct ray-tracing code to provide the density, pressure, and temperature profiles in the altitude range $\sim$8 km to $\sim$190 km, corresponding to pressure levels from 9 {\mu}bar down to a few nanobars. Results. (i) A pressure of 1.18$\pm$0.03 {\mu}bar is found at a reference radius of 1400 km (47 km altitude). (ii) A new analysis of the Voyager 2 radio science occultation shows that this is consistent with an extrapolation of pressure down to the surface pressure obtained in 1989. (iii) A survey of occultations obtained between 1989 and 2017 suggests that an enhancement in surface pressure as reported during the 1990s might be real, but debatable, due to very few high S/N light curves and data accessible for reanalysis. The volatile transport model analysed supports a moderate increase in surface pressure, with a maximum value around 2005-2015 no higher than 23 {\mu}bar. The pressures observed in 1995-1997 and 2017 appear mutually inconsistent with the volatile transport model presented here. (iv) The central flash structure does not show evidence of an atmospheric distortion. In the derivation of the thermodynamics of overdamped systems, one ignores the kinetic energy contribution, since the velocity is a slow variable. In this paper, we show that the kinetic energy needs to be present in the calculation of the heat distribution to have a correct correspondence between the underdamped and overdamped cases, meaning that the velocity can not be fully ignored in the thermodynamics of these systems. We do this by investigating in detail the effect of the kinetic energy for three different systems, the harmonic potential, the logarithm potential, and an arbitrary non-isothermal process., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

By considering an explicit nonequilibrium model, we analyze the statistics of the irreversible work, $w_{\rm irr}$, and irreversible entropy production, $\Delta_i s$, within the stochastic energetics framework. Restating the second law of thermodynamics as a function of $w_{\rm irr}$, we introduce the explicit probability of violating the canonical form of that second law for a different set of parameters and initial conditions of the model. Moreover, we study the irreversible entropy production along the same lines, since it can be cast as a generalization of the irreversible work. From an informational perspective, our result allows quantifying the probability of deleting information without performing work, contrarily to the Landauer's Principle, which we classify as an informational free lunch. Here, inspired by the operation of conventional semiconductor transistors, we introduce a novel class of bulk materials with nonreciprocal and non-Hermitian electromagnetic response. Our analysis shows that material nonlinearities combined with a static electric bias may lead to a linearized permittivity tensor that lacks the Hermitian and transpose symmetries. Remarkably, the material can either dissipate or generate energy, depending on the relative phase of the electric field components. We introduce a simple design for an electromagnetic isolator based on an idealized "MOSFET-metamaterial" and show that its performance can in principle surpass conventional Faraday isolators due to the material gain. Furthermore, it is suggested that analogous material responses may be engineered in natural media in nonequilibrium situations. Our solution determines an entirely novel paradigm to break the electromagnetic reciprocity in a bulk nonlinear material using a static electric bias.

The stellar occultation technique provides competitive accuracy in determining the sizes, shapes, astrometry, etc., of the occulting body, comparable to in-situ observations by spacecraft. With the increase in the number of known Solar System objects expected from the LSST, the highly precise astrometric catalogues, such as Gaia, and the improvement of ephemerides, occultations observations will become more common with a higher number of chords in each observation. In the context of the Big Data era, we developed SORA, an open-source python library to reduce and analyse stellar occultation data efficiently. Supposing only that there is an effective charge which defines an evolution scheme for parton distribution functions (DFs) that is all-orders exact, strict lower and upper bounds on all Mellin moments of the valence-quark DFs of pion-like systems are derived. Exploiting contemporary results from numerical simulations of lattice-regularised quantum chromodynamics (QCD) that are consistent with these bounds, parameter-free predictions for pion valence, glue, and sea DFs are obtained. The form of the valence-quark DF at large values of the light-front momentum fraction is consistent with predictions derived using the QCD-prescribed behaviour of the pion wave function., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Fillet welding is one of the most widespread types of welding in the industry, which is still carried out manually or automated by contact. This paper aims to describe an online programming system for noncontact fillet welding robots with U and L shaped structures, which responds to the needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In this paper, the authors propose an online robot programming methodology that eliminates unnecessary steps traditionally performed in robotic welding, so that the operator only performs three steps to complete the welding task. First, choose the piece to weld. Then, enter the welding parameters. Finally, it sends the automatically generated program to the robot. The system finally managed to perform the fillet welding task with the proposed method in a more efficient preparation time than the compared methods. For this, a reduced number of components was used compared to other systems, such as, a structured light 3D camera, two computers and a concentrator, in addition to the six axis industrial robotic arm. The operating complexity of the system has been reduced as much as possible. To the best of the authors knowledge, there is no scientific or commercial evidence of an online robot programming system capable of performing a fillet welding process, simplifying the process so that it is completely transparent for the operator and framed in the Industry 4.0 paradigm. Its commercial potential lies mainly in its simple and low cost implementation in a flexible system capable of adapting to any industrial fillet welding job and to any support that can accommodate it., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

In this article, it is experimentally verified that nonreciprocal photonic systems with a continuous translation symmetry may have an ill-defined topology. The topological classification of such systems is only feasible when the material response is regularized with a spatial-frequency cutoff. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that inserting a small air gap in between two materials may effectively imitate an idealized spatial cutoff that suppresses the nonreciprocal response for short wavelengths and regularizes the topology. Furthermore, it is experimentally verified that nonreciprocal systems with an ill-defined topology may be used to abruptly halt the energy flow in a unidirectional waveguide due to the violation of the bulk-edge correspondence. In particular, we report the formation of an energy sink that absorbs the incoming electromagnetic waves with a large field enhancement at the singularity., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

Biomedical decision making involves multiple signal processing, either from different sensors or from different channels. In both cases, information fusion plays a significant role. A deep learning based electroencephalogram channels' feature level fusion is carried out in this work for the electroencephalogram cyclic alternating pattern A phase classification. Channel selection, fusion, and classification procedures were optimized by two optimization algorithms, namely, Genetic Algorithm and Particle Swarm Optimization. The developed methodologies were evaluated by fusing the information from multiple electroencephalogram channels for patients with nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy and patients without any neurological disorder, which was significantly more challenging when compared to other state of the art works. Results showed that both optimization algorithms selected a comparable structure with similar feature level fusion, consisting of three electroencephalogram channels, which is in line with the CAP protocol to ensure multiple channels' arousals for CAP detection. Moreover, the two optimized models reached an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.82, with average accuracy ranging from 77% to 79%, a result which is in the upper range of the specialist agreement. The proposed approach is still in the upper range of the best state of the art works despite a difficult dataset, and has the advantage of providing a fully automatic analysis without requiring any manual procedure. Analyses of the pion valence-quark distribution function (DF), ${u}^\pi(x;\zeta)$, which explicitly incorporate the behaviour of the pion wave function prescribed by quantum chromodynamics (QCD), predict ${u}^\pi(x\simeq 1;\zeta) \sim (1-x)^{\beta(\zeta)}$, $\beta(\zeta \gtrsim m_p)>2$, where $m_p$ is the proton mass. Nevertheless, more than forty years after the first experiment to collect data suitable for extracting the $x\simeq 1$ behaviour of ${u}^\pi$, the empirical status remains uncertain because some methods used to fit existing data return a result for ${u}^\pi$ that violates this constraint. Such disagreement entails one of the following conclusions: the analysis concerned is incomplete; not all data being considered are a true expression of qualities intrinsic to the pion; or QCD, as it is currently understood, is not the theory of strong interactions. New, precise data are necessary before a final conclusion is possible. In developing these positions, we exploit a single proposition, viz. there is an effective charge which defines an evolution scheme for parton DFs that is all-orders exact. Let G and K be groupoids. We present the notion of a (G_{\alpha},K_{\beta})-set and we prove a duality theorem in this context, which extends the duality theorem for graded algebras by groups. For A a unital G-graded algebra and X a finite split G-set, we show that there is an isomorphism between the category of the left A-modules X-graded and the category of the left A \#_{\alpha}^{G}X-modules. As an application of this isomorphism, we construct a Morita context.

We present in this letter the first systematic feasibility study of accessing generalised parton distributions of the pion at an electron-ion collider through deeply virtual Compton scattering at next-to-leading order. It relies on a state-of-the-art model, able to fulfil by construction all the theoretical constraints imposed on generalised parton distributions. Strikingly, our analysis shows that quarks and gluons interfere destructively and that gluon dominance could be spotted by a sign change of the DVCS beam spin asymmetry., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We introduce a new family of Generalised Parton Distribution models able to fulfil by construction all the theoretical properties imposed by QCD. These models are built on standard Parton Distribution Functions and extended to off-forward kinematics through a well-defined procedure. We apply this strategy on the pion, first handling a simple but insightful algebraic model, and then exploiting state-of-the-art computations obtained in continuum QCD. We compare these models with a more standard one relying on an xFitter extraction of the pion Parton Distribution Functions. The results for both quark and gluon Generalised Parton Distributions are presented and exploited for calculation of Electromagnetic, Gravitational and Compton Form Factors. In this paper, we focus on stationary (ergodic) mean-field games (MFGs). These games arise in the study of the long-time behavior of finite-horizon MFGs. Motivated by a prior scheme for Hamilton-Jacobi equations introduced in Aubry-Mather's theory, we introduce a discrete approximation to stationary MFGs. Relying on Kakutani's fixed-point theorem, we prove the existence and uniqueness (up to additive constant) of solutions to the discrete problem. Moreover, we show that the solutions to the discrete problem converge, uniformly in the nonlocal case and weakly in the local case, to the classical solutions of the stationary problem., Comment: 30 pages

Clear windows onto emergent hadron mass (EHM) and modulations thereof by Higgs boson interactions are provided by observable measures of pion and kaon structure, many of which are accessible via generalised parton distributions (GPDs). Beginning with algebraic GPD Ansaetze, constrained entirely by hadron-scale $\pi$ and $K$ valence-parton distribution functions (DFs), in whose forms both EHM and Higgs boson influences are manifest, numerous illustrations are provided. They include the properties of electromagnetic form factors, impact parameter space GPDs, gravitational form factors and associated pressure profiles, and the character and consequences of all-orders evolution. The analyses predict that mass-squared gravitational form factors are stiffer than electromagnetic form factors; reveal that $K$ pressure profiles are tighter than $\pi$ profiles, with both mesons sustaining near-core pressures at magnitudes similar to that expected at the core of neutron stars; deliver parameter-free predictions for $\pi$ and $K$ valence, glue, and sea GPDs at the resolving scale $\zeta=2$GeV; and predict that at this scale the fraction of meson mass-squared carried by glue and sea combined matches that lodged with the valence degrees-of-freedom, with a similar statement holding for mass-squared radii., Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures, 2 tables

The study of trajectories is often a core task in several research fields. In environmental modelling, trajectories are crucial to study fluid pollution, animal migrations, oil slick patterns or land movements. In this contribution, we address the lack of standardization and integration existing in current approaches to handle trajectory data. Within this scenario, challenges extend from the extraction of a trajectory from raw sensor data to the application of mathematical tools for modeling or making inferences about populations and their environments. This work introduces a generic framework that addresses the problem as a whole, i.e., a software library to handle trajectory data. It contains a robust tracking module aiming at making data acquisition handy, artificial generation of trajectories powered by different stochastic models to aid comparisons among experimental and theoretical data, a statistical kit for analyzing patterns in groups of trajectories and other resources to speed up pre-processing of trajectory data. It is worth emphasizing that this library does not make assumptions about the nature of trajectories (e.g., those from GPS), which facilitates its usage across different disciplines. We validate the software by reproducing key results when modelling dynamical systems related to environmental modelling applications. An example script to facilitate reproduction is presented for each case.

The Centaur (10199) Chariklo has the first rings system discovered around a small object. It was first observed using stellar occultation in 2013. Stellar occultations allow the determination of sizes and shapes with kilometre accuracy and obtain characteristics of the occulting object and its vicinity. Using stellar occultations observed between 2017 and 2020, we aim at constraining Chariklo's and its rings physical parameters. We also determine the rings' structure, and obtain precise astrometrical positions of Chariklo. We predicted and organised several observational campaigns of stellar occultations by Chariklo. Occultation light curves were measured from the data sets, from which ingress and egress times, and rings' width and opacity were obtained. These measurements, combined with results from previous works, allow us to obtain significant constraints on Chariklo's shape and rings' structure. We characterise Chariklo's ring system (C1R and C2R), and obtain radii and pole orientations that are consistent with, but more accurate than, results from previous occultations. We confirmed the detection of W-shaped structures within C1R and an evident variation of radial width. The observed width ranges between 4.8 and 9.1 km with a mean value of 6.5 km. One dual observation (visible and red) does not reveal any differences in the C1R opacity profiles, indicating ring particle's size larger than a few microns. The C1R ring eccentricity is found to be smaller than 0.022 (3-sigma), and its width variations may indicate an eccentricity higher than 0.005. We fit a tri-axial shape to Chariklo's detections over eleven occultations and determine that Chariklo is consistent with an ellipsoid with semi-axes of 143.8, 135.2 and 99.1 km. Ultimately, we provided seven astrometric positions at a milliarcseconds accuracy level, based on Gaia EDR3, and use it to improve Chariklo's ephemeris., Comment: 32 pages, 11 Figures in the main text, paper was accepted for publication in Section 10. Radio astronomy and Space Infrastructures in the Azores have a great scientific and industrial interest because they benefit from a unique geographical location in the middle of the North Atlantic allowing a vast improvement in the sky coverage. This fact obviously has a very high added value for: i) the establishment of space tracking and communications networks for the emergent global small satellite fleets ii) it is invaluable to connect the radio astronomy infrastructure networks in Africa, Europe and America continents using Very Large Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) techniques, iii) it allows excellent potential for monitoring space debris and Near Earth Objects (NEOs). There is in S. Miguel island a 32-metre SATCOM antenna that could be integrated in advanced VLBI networks and be capable of additional Deep Space Network ground support. This paper explores the space science opportunities offered by the upgrade of the S. Miguel 32-metre SATCOM antenna into a world-class infrastructure for radio astronomy and space exploration: it would enable a Deep Space Network mode and would constitute a key space facility for data production, promoting local digital infrastructure investments and the testing of cutting-edge information technologies. Its Atlantic location also enables improvements in angular resolution, provides many baseline in East-West and North-South directions connecting the emergent VLBI stations in America to Europe and Africa VLBI arrays therefore contributing for greater array imaging capabilities especially for sources or well studied fields close to or below the celestial equator, where ESO facilities, ALMA, SKA and its precursors do or will operate and observe in the coming decades., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. Understanding the statistical behavior of the heat in stochastic systems gives us insight about the thermodynamics of such systems. Using the recently proposed Relativistic Stochastic Thermodynamics, we investigate the statistics of the heat of a Relativistic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle, comparing with the classical cases. The results are exact through numerical integration of the Fokker-Planck of the joint distribution, and are validated by numerical simulations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures
