In this study, a high-efficiency cationic flocculant, P(DAC-MAPTAC-AM), was successfully prepared using UV-induced polymerization technology. The monomer Acrylamide (AM): Acryloxyethyl Trimethyl ammonium chloride (DAC): methacrylamido propyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (MAPTAC) ratio, monomer concentration, photoinitiator concentration, urea content, and cationic monomer DAC:MAPTAC ratio, light time, and power of high-pressure mercury lamp were studied. The characteristic groups, characteristic diffraction peaks, and characteristic proton peaks of P(DAC-MAPTAC-AM) were confirmed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (1H NMR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of dosage, pH value, and velocity gradient (G) value on the removal efficiencies of turbidity, COD, ammonia nitrogen, and total phenol by poly aluminum ferric chloride (PAFC), P(DAC-MAPTAC-AM), and PAFC/P(DAC-MAPTAC-AM) in the flocculation treatment of coal chemical wastewater were investigated. Results showed that the optimal conditions for the flocculation of coal chemical wastewater using P(DAC-MAPTAC-AM) alone are as follows: dosage of 8–12 mg/L, G value of 100–250 s −1, and pH value of 4–8. The optimal dosage of PAFC is 90–150 mg/L with a pH of 2–12. The optimal dosage for PAFC/P(DAC-MAPTAC-AM) is as follows: PAFC dosage of 90–150 mg/L, P(DAC-MAPTAC-AM) dosage of 8–12 mg/L, and pH range of 2–6. When P(DAC-MAPTAC-AM) was used alone, the optimal removal efficiencies of turbidity, COD, ammonia nitrogen, and total phenol were 81.0%, 35.0%, 75.0%, and 80.3%, respectively. PAFC has good tolerance to wastewater pH and good pH buffering. Thus, the flocculation treatment of coal chemical wastewater using the PAFC/P(DAC-MAPTAC-AM) compound also exhibits excellent resistance and buffering capacity. The availability of a benchtop nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer, of low cost and easily transportable, can allow detection of low quantities of biosensors, provided that hyperpolarized species are used. Here we show that the micromolar threshold can easily be reached by employing laser-polarized xenon and cage molecules reversibly hosting it. Indirect detection of caged xenon is made via chemical exchange, using ultra-fast Z spectroscopy based on spatio-temporal encoding. Experimental results on measuring the resonance frequency ratio of the protons of water and of 23Na nuclei in NaCl solutions with concentrations from 0.1 to 0.5 g per 100 g H2O are presented. Signals of water protons and sodium nuclei were acquired simultaneously, which allowed minimizing random and systematic uncertainties in measurements of the ratio of resonance frequencies f(H2O)/f(23Na+) to the level of one billionth. Extrapolation of the content of NaCl in water to zero for individual ions in water yielded the value f(H2O)/f(23Na+) = 3.780463993(25). Using the known data on the magnetic moment of proton and on the shielding of protons and sodium ions in water, the magnetic moment of sodium nuclei was found to be μ(23Na) = 2.2175065(55). In this study, a clean and efficient down processing technology improved the bulkiness of the down fibers by two physical methods. On the one hand, amino polysiloxane compound SI-G was used to modify down fibers physically. On the other hand, the structure of down fibers keratin was changed and the elasticity of down was increased by adjusting the temperature, so the bulkiness of down fibers was improved. The results showed that the most suitable condition for down fibers in the air-blast dusting machine was a temperature of 60 ± 2°C when the SI-G dosage was 2% of the weight of down, the performance of down fibers was the best. The bulkiness increased by 49%, the cleanliness increased by 92%, and the residual fat rate did not change significantly. Evidence was provided by scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (13C-NMR), X-ray Diffractometer (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy analysis. The results showed that, on the one hand, amino polysiloxane SI-G adsorbed on the down surface, making the fiber smooth, soft, and elastic. On the other hand, the conformation of down fibers keratin changed, the conformation of keratin macromolecule α-helix increased relatively, and the random crimp conformation decreased relatively, which makes the protein structure more regular and elastic, so the bulkiness of the down fibers improved. Coal tar pitch (CTP) is an important heavy carbon resource. Its effective utilization largely depends on the full structural evaluation of CTP. In this paper, the CTP from Shanxi Datuhe coal tar distillation plant was adopted as the sample (DCTP). Multiple analytical equipments including X-ray diffractometer spectrometer, solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer were used to directly characterize DCTP, and DCTP was further catalytically oxidized over ruthenium ion. The typical characteristics of structures in DCTP were investigated by combining the two methods. It was demonstrated that aromatic structures dominated in DCTP, in which the aromaticity was up to 95 %. Specifically, aromatic structures were abundant in peri-condensed aromatic structures, poor in cata-condensed aromatic structures, but short of polyaryl structures. There were about 4 rings in each aromatic cluster, and the aromatic clusters were lowly substituted by a few methyl side chains. Furthermore, the nitrogen and sulfur atoms mainly existed in the heterocyclic ring, while the oxygen one was principally in Car‒O group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A hydrophilic copolymer (MA‐APEA) containing carboxylic acid group and ethylene oxide group is synthesized from maleic anhydride (MA) and allyloxy polyethoxy carboxylic acid (APEA) in free radical polymerization and its structure is characterized using FT‐IR, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer and gel permeation chromatographic techniques. Seven polymer solutions with different degrees of deprotonation are prepared by adding caustic solution to the polymer solution. Effects of the degree of deprotonation of the polymer on curbing calcium scale and the corrosion inhibition of low carbon steel are studied. Influences of the operating conditions on inhibition against CaCO3 scale by the polymer with different degrees of deprotonation are also investigated. Effects of the degree of deprotonation on CaCO3 deposits/precipitate are analyzed using scanning electronic microscope and X‐ray diffraction. The results show that different degrees of deprotonation of the polymer have different influences on different calcium scale and corrosion inhibition of low carbon steel. The performance of the polymer to withstand high alkalinity and high hardness and high temperature decreases with increase in the degree of deprotonation. The change in the degree of deprotonation influences the conversion of aragonite and vaterite to calcite, and hardly impacts the crystal morphology of CaCO3 crystals. The ratio of NMR frequencies of lithium isotopes f(7Li)/f(6Li) = 2.6409061846(13) was determined with an error of 4.9·10–10. The use of a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer operating in the mode of simultaneous registration of signals from two nuclei to obtain data allowed the random and systematic errors in the measurement results to be reduced by an order of magnitude. The ratio of the resonant frequencies of water protons and 7Li ions was determined: f(H2O)/f(7Li) = 2.557100473(9) with an error of 3.5·10–9 for solutions with an extremely low concentration of LiOH*H2O salt in water and at a temperature of 25°C. Based on the obtained data, the magnetic moments of lithium nuclei were calculated: μ(6Li) = 0.8220454(25)μN, μ(7Li) = 3.2564171(98)μN. The known data on the magnetic moment of the proton and data on the electronic shielding of these nuclei were used. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is potentially a very powerful process analytical technology (PAT) tool as it gives an atomic resolution picture of the reaction mixture without the need for chromatography. NMR is well suited for interrogating transient intermediates, providing kinetic information via NMR active nuclei, and most importantly provides universally quantitative information for all species in solution. This contrasts with commonly used PAT instruments, such as Raman or Flow‐infrared (IR), which requires a separate calibration curve for every component of the reaction mixture. To date, the large footprint of high‐field (≥400 MHz) NMR spectrometers and the immobility of superconducting magnets, coupled with strict requirements for the architecture for the room it is to be installed, have been a major obstacle to using this technology right next to fume hoods where chemists perform synthetic work. Here, we describe the use of a small, lightweight 60 MHz Benchtop NMR system (Nanalysis Pro‐60) located on a mobile platform, that was used to monitor both small and intermediate scale Grignard formation and coupling reactions. We also show how low field NMR can provide a deceptively simple yes/no answer (for a system that would otherwise require laborious off‐line testing) in the enrichment of one component versus another in a kilogram scale distillation. Benchtop NMR was also used to derive molecule specific information from Flow‐IR, a technology found in most manufacturing sites, and compare the ease at which the concentrations of the reaction mixtures can be derived by NMR versus IR. High‐field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has proven to be a valuable tool to analyze petroleum products but has never acquired widespread acceptance in routine work in oil refinery due to the high cost. The advent of compact, reliable, and affordable cryogen‐free low‐field benchtop NMR spectrometers suggest a possible role of such instrument for a variety of uses in refining spanning from routine lab work applications to online analysis. In this work, we report the development of a novel benchtop NMR application to estimate the API gravity, sulfur content, total acidity number (TAN), and distillation yields of crude petroleum from 60 MHz 1H NMR spectra and partial least square (PLS) regression models. The results obtained on a dataset of over 170 crude oil samples and tested with external validation set show performances in terms of root mean square standard error of prediction (RMSEP) matching the analytical methods' ASTM precision. This novel benchtop NMR and multivariate analysis application can thus be used in typical refinery laboratories to provide within minutes and without physical distillation, reliable estimates of the most important properties usually measured on the crude petroleum during refining. The method proves to be a fast, cheaper alternative to the current analytical options providing readily available data for managing crude oil and has high potential to be further exploited for online application. Low‐cost, high‐accuracy characterization of polymeric materials is critical for satisfying societal demand for high‐quality materials with ultra‐specific requirements. Low‐field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy presents an opportunity to replace costlier or destructive methods while utilizing nondeuterated solvents. Many factors play key roles in the ability of low‐field NMR spectroscopy to accurately analyze polymer systems. Sample characteristics such as polymer concentration, composition, and molecular weight all directly affect the capability of low‐field spectrometers to accurately determine polymer microstructure compositions. In addition to inherent sample properties affecting instrumental accuracy, many choices concerning instrumental parameters (including number of scans, relaxation delay, spectral width, and points per scan) must be made that impact the quality of the resulting NMR spectra. In this work, we benchmark the capability of a 60‐MHz low‐field NMR spectrometer for analyzing polymer materials using mixed microstructure polyisoprenes as a model polymer system of interest. The aforementioned critical sample and instrumental variables are varied, and we report on the ability to quantitatively characterize polyisoprene microstructure to within 1–2% of a higher field NMR spectrometer (400 MHz). The development of effective remedial technologies for the destruction of environmental pollutants requires the ability to clearly monitor degradation processes. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for understanding reaction progress; however, practical considerations often restrict the application of NMR spectroscopy as a tool to better understand the degradation of environmental pollutants. Chief among these restrictions is the limited access smaller environmental research labs and remediation companies have to suitable NMR facilities. Benchtop NMR spectroscopy is a low‐cost and user‐friendly approach to acquire much of the same information as conventional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, albeit with reduced sensitivity and resolution. This paper explores the practical application of benchtop NMR spectroscopy to understand the degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid using sodium persulfate, a common reagent for the destruction of groundwater contaminants. It is found that Benchtop 19F NMR spectroscopy is able to monitor the complete degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid into fluoride; however, the observation of intermediate degradation products formed, which can be observed using a conventional NMR spectrometer, cannot be readily distinguished from the parent compound when measurements are performed using the benchtop instrument. Under certain reaction conditions, the formation of fluorinated structures that are resistant to further degradation is readily observed. Overall, it is shown that benchtop 19F NMR spectroscopy has potential as a quick and reliable tool to assist in the development of remedial technologies for the degradation of fluorinated contaminants. Sanctions against Iran It is difficult to ascertain whether sanctions against Iran are targeted due to their intricately complex nature and implications. Overall, it seems that sanctions in Iran have shifted over the last decade from carefully targeted ones to more comprehensive sanctions which are impacting the health sector (Moret [29]). Further international clarity is also required, as disparities exist between countries applying sanctions, such as the UK sanction list providing greater sanction relief than the US sanction list. Benchtop NMR spectrometers have become widely available over the last decade. They are now used successfully in various branches of chemistry. Their popularity continues to grow due to their low price and almost zero running costs. However, benchtop spectrometers suffer from low resolution and sensitivity compared to the high-field spectrometers used in NMR labs for several decades. In this article we present a solution for boosting the sensitivity of benchtop NMR spectrometers in a multi-scan experiment and improving their capabilities in quantitative measurement. Our solution involves the synchronized shifting of a sample to preserve its high nuclear polarization during the measurement. We performed several experiments using different samples to confirm this improved performance: an 1H NMR experiment for 4,4-dimethoxy-2-butanone, and 13C NMR experiments for benzyl salicylate, the liquid pharmaceutical product Acerin (skin solution), and a mixture of m-anisaldehyde and (R)-(+)-limonene. It is well known that the relaxation rates (1/T1 and 1/T2) in H2O/D2O mixtures are smaller than those in H2O alone. The results of this have not been examined in the presence of a low rate of cysts or abscess contents in D2O. One purpose of this study was to determine the shortening of the relaxation rate distribution interval (SRDI) for D2O containing cysts or abscess contents. Another goal is to investigate the differentiation of cysts from abscesses with T1 and T2 measurements. The ultimate objective is the possibility of a new MRI contrast mechanism for dental lesions. Nineteen odontogenic jaw cysts and 12 jaw abscesses were collected from patients. A mixture was prepared by adding 0.06 mL cyst or abscess content to 0.94 mL D2O. The experiments were carried out with a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer operating at 400 MHz. The mean 1/T2 of the abscesses was significantly different from that of the cysts (P < 0.005), but the mean 1/T1 of the non-haemorrhagic cysts was not different from that of the abscesses (P = 0.626). The interval shortening ratios (SRDIs) of 1/T1 and 1/T2 for the cystic mixture were 16.36 and 4.22, respectively. The ratios were 8.39 and 2.68, respectively, for the mixture containing abscess contents. In conclusion, the relaxation rate reduction of the mixture results in a shortening of the distribution intervals, which leads to the separation of cysts from abscesses. In addition, the high interval shortening ratios indicate that the results of this study can provide a basis for studies on a new MR contrast mechanism for jaw lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the continuous worsening of water pollution, the use of various collectors to remove heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions has attracted widespread attention. In this work, an acid-resistant collector, sodium acetyldithiocarbamate (ADTC) that combines acetamide with carbon disulfide was proposed for heavy metal removal. The structure of ADTC was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (NMR). Flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS) was used to detect the concentration of metal ions in the solution before and after the treatment of the chelating agents. The chelation removal efficiency are compared for different chelating agents for Cu2+ and Ni2+ in acidic aqueous solution with pH = 1–7, and compared to the chelation removal efficiency of sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) and sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX) chelating agents. The experimental results suggest the order of the chelating ability is ADTC > DDTC > SEX for Cu2+ and Ni2+. The chelating ability of ADTC to Ni2+ is stronger than that of Cu2+. The chelating ability of the collector is greatly affected by the pH value. The ADTC has a good chelating ability in the pH range of 3–7. The molecular orbital distribution, charge and electrostatic potential surfaces in quantum chemistry are used to explore the main active sites of the chelating agent are the S atom. The results of high resolution mass spectrometry showed that the ADTC is coordinated with the positive divalent metal ion in the ratio of 2:1. According to the results, the dithioamino (–NHCSS−) groups are coordinated with the positive divalent metal ion in a 2:1 ratio. Recently, there has been increasing interest in new modalities such as therapeutic antibodies and gene therapy at a number of pharmaceutical companies. Moreover, in small-molecule drug discovery at such companies, efforts have focused on hard-to-drug targets such as inhibiting protein–protein interactions. Biomolecular NMR spectroscopy has been used in drug discovery in a variety of ways, such as for the reliable detection of binding and providing three-dimensional structural information for structure-based drug design. The advantages of using NMR spectroscopy have been known for decades (Jahnke in J Biomol NMR 39:87–90, (2007); Gossert and Jahnke in Prog Nucl Magn Reson Spectrosc 97:82–125, (2016)). For tackling hard-to-drug targets and increasing the success in discovering drug molecules, in-depth analysis of drug–target protein interactions performed by biophysical methods will be more and more essential. Here, we review the advantages of NMR spectroscopy as a key technology of biophysical methods and also discuss issues such as using cutting-edge NMR spectrometers and increasing the demand of utilizing conformational dynamics information for promoting small-molecule drug discovery. As the simplest glycosaminoglycan (GAG) in extracellular matrix, hyaluronic acid (HA) takes part in several important biological processes, such as regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and migration. In this work, a series of HA-inspired polymers with different saccharide and carboxylate units (HA-analogue polymers) are synthesized by free radical polymerization, and characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (NMR), Moreover, cell experiments demonstrate that HA-analogue polymers with a certain proportion of saccharide and carboxylate (PM 1 G 1) units shows a positive effect on the proliferation and differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). Furthermore, HA-analogue polymers have prominent cartilage inductive capacity in chondrogenic induction medium (CIM) and brilliant bone inductive capacity in osteogenic induction medium (OIM) toward BMSCs. Therefore, it is confirmed that the HA-analogue polymers can effectively mimic the functions of HA and have broad potential application prospects in the biomedical and clinical fields. • We firstly fabricated various HA-analogue polymers with saccharide and carboxylate units through a facile strategy. • HA-analogue polymers such as PM1G1 show positive effect on the proliferation of BMSCs. • HA-analogue polymers can guide the chondrogenic differentiation of BMSCs in basic culture medium (BCM). • The synergistic effect of HA-analogue polymers and induction medium has potential in applications of tissue engineering. Portable nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers are used in various scientific fields. A vast number of applications are suitable for low-field permanent magnets. However, most of these systems lack the ability of pulsed-field gradients as these require cumbersome additional hardware. We herein report an NMR probe head that incorporates a radio frequency (RF)-coil equipped with pulsed-field gradient capabilities in a single center-tapped solenoid. We developed a circuitry allowing for the application of direct currents without disturbing the RF reception capabilities. Furthermore, we present a System-on-Chip-based NMR spectrometer. Combined with the NMR probe head, it represents a versatile low-cost system capable of field gradient generation. The probe head is characterized in terms of scatter parameters, quality factor, and transversal field homogeneity. We exhibit simulation data of the field gradient and present the required external circuitry. Experimental results show further the dephasing capabilities of the gradient and give insights into the spatial shape. Finally, the system is applied for the mapping of J-couplings in 1-butanol via zero-quantum coherences. A theoretical analysis of the pulse sequence is given for a homonuclear two-spin system. The necessity of recording the spectrum of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in a weak field from a condensed medium during express control of its state is substantiated. The conditions have been established that make it possible to record the NMR spectra in a weak field. A new design of a small-sized nuclear magnetic spectrometer for recording the NMR spectrum in a weak magnetic field from a volume of a condensed medium of about 3.0 mL has been developed. Daphnia (freshwater fleas) are among the most widely used organisms in regulatory aquatic toxicology/ecology, while their recent listing as an NIH model organism is stimulating research for understanding human diseases and processes. Daphnia are small enough to fit inside high field NMR spectrometers and can be kept alive indefinitely using flow systems that deliver food and oxygen. As such, in vivo NMR holds the potential to monitor when/if environmental stress is occurring, understand "why" chemicals are toxic (biochemical pathways impacted and toxic-mode-of-action), and differentiate between a temporary flux response (i.e. return to homeostasis) and a permanent change in biochemistry (likely a precursor to disease). At present however, such studies are limited as the in vivo NMR data of Daphnia are highly complex and the lack of spectral assignments makes extracting metabolic information difficult. In this study, Daphnia are 13C enriched to >97% 13C and numerous 1H and 13C 1D, 2D, and 3D NMR approaches are combined to provide, as complete as possible, an assignment of the Daphnia magna metabolome in vivo. Assignments are transferred (where possible) back to line narrowed susceptibility suppressed 1H 1D NMR spectra in order to permit the maximum amount of information to be gained in the future without the need for 13C enrichment. The CO poisoning effect was overcome using a novel synthesis method. This method consists of using sodium borohydride reducing agent assisted by magnetic field and radiofrequency pulses in the time-domain NMR spectrometer. This synthesis was useful to disperse the Pt nanoparticles over the carbon support and to compress the lattice strain of the Pt crystalline structure. Besides that, Pt/C MFP90° showed a multi-CO oxidation component in cyclic voltammetry, and this can avoid the poisoning effect by creating a large availability of CO species to be adsorbed, desorbed, and re-adsorbed. Pt/C MFP90° has also shown the best performance in the PEMFC regarding H 2 and CO + H 2 experiments. We report that an NMR spectrometer equipped with a high‐power LED light source can be used to study a fast enantioselective photocatalytic [2+2] cycloaddition. While traditional ex situ applications of NMR provide considerable information on reaction mechanisms, they are often ineffective for observing fast reactions. Recently, motivated by renewed interest in organic photochemistry, several approaches have been reported for in situ monitoring of photochemical reactions. These previously disclosed methods, however, have rarely been applied to rapid (<5 min) photochemical reactions. Furthermore, these approaches have not previously been used to interrogate the mechanisms of photocatalytic energy‐transfer reactions. We introduce ssNMRlib, a comprehensive suite of pulse sequences and jython scripts for userfriendly solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data acquisition, parameter optimization and storage on Bruker spectrometers. ssNMRlib allows the straightforward setup of even highly complex multi-dimensional solid-state NMR experiments with a few clicks from an intuitive graphical interface directly from the Bruker Topspin acquisition software. ssNMRlib allows the setup of experiments in a magnetic-field-independent manner and thus facilitates the workflow in a multi-spectrometer setting with a centralized library. Safety checks furthermore assist the user in experiment setup. Currently hosting more than 140 1D to 4D experiments, primarily for biomolecular solid-state NMR, the library can be easily customized and new experiments are readily added as new templates. ssNMRlib is part of the previously introduced NMRlib library, which comprises many solution-NMR pulse sequences and macros. Low field magnetic resonance (MR) for the study of chemical compounds is a very common and important area of research. However, the greater the intensity of the magnetic field, the better the signal-to-noise ratio of the signal obtained from the substance under study and, therefore, the greater the possibilities of identifying the different chemical compounds. To conduct these studies, an MR spectrometer was built at the Centro de Biofísica Médica (Biophysics and Medical Physics Center), the parts of which were taken from other equipment in the laboratory or modified, such as the radio frequency (RF) modulator. This paper describes the changes and improvements made to the RF modulator that allowed the spectrometer to function correctly at the new 1.5 T field. The aforementioned changes included: changing the modulator's working frequencies to make it work well at the new 64 MHz, change of frequency, changing the RF switch to achieve better attenuation of the non-desired RF signal, designing and implementing a RF switch control circuit and designing and implementing a new 64 MHz passband filter. The performance of the upgraded modulator was demonstrated by measuring harmonic suppression, sideband rejection and conversion loss. Finally, the modulator fitted into the spectrometer was validated by carrying out a complete experiment that ended with the acquisition of an MR signal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Benchtop nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a useful tool for the rapid determination of the self-diffusion coefficient and the hydrodynamic radius of dendrons. The self-diffusion coefficients of the first four generations of poly ethoxy ethyl glycinamide (PEE-G) dendrons are measured by diffusionordered spectroscopy (DOSY) on a benchtop NMR equipped with diffusion gradient coils. The hydrodynamic radii of the dendrons are calculated via the Stokes--Einstein equation. The effects of solvent and pH are determined with the hydrodynamic radius increasing with generation and decreasing upon neutralization of an acidic solution. • Compact NMR spectroscopy as an online non-invasive microalgae in vivo lipid sensor. • The NMR signal is quantitative when calibrated with total lipid reference method. • The NMR performance is compatible with the bioprocess operating conditions. • Lipid productivities are measured in real-time for real-time optimization purposes. The production of lipids by microalgae is widely studied, especially to find the best bioprocess operating conditions and optimize the productivity of the targeted product. In this context, being able to monitor online the evolution of the lipid concentration is a great advantage regarding the control and/or the optimization of the production. Yet, most non-invasive analyses hit a brick wall on the interference of the lipid signal with the ubiquitous water of the culture medium. This article shows how a compact NMR spectrometer connected to a photobioreactor can circumvent this drawback and measure, in real-time and in a non-invasive manner, the total lipid concentration, and that directly on the entire cells grown in their culture medium. The water signal could be enough-selectively removed using the W5 version of the WATERGATE pulse sequence. The NMR signal nicely correlates (R² > 0.99) with the offline FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) total lipid analysis as performed by GC-FID (Gas Chromatography coupled to Flame Ionization Detector) within limits of detection and quantification of respectively 9 and 30 mg.L−1. The lipid specific signal appears also quite robust regarding the dissolved dioxygen, making the benchtop NMR spectroscopy an appropriate universal device for the online monitoring of lipids produced in bioprocesses. An extremely-high field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer has the potential to significantly augment the resolution and sensitivity of the atomic resonance spectrum, which will significantly boost the development of a range of scientific areas. The success of an extremely-high field NMR spectrometer depends to a great extent on the development of a superconducting magnet system. A high-temperature superconducting (HTS) insert magnet and low-temperature superconducting (LTS) shim coils design scheme for a 27 T NMR spectrometer is proposed in this work. A LTS background magnet was used to generate a 15 T magnetic field in the central area and the designed HTS insert magnet contributed the remaining 12 T magnetic field. The HTS insert magnet adopted notch double-pancake (DP) optimization to improve the rough magnetic field distribution in the central area to a highly-homogeneous level, and shim compensation schemes were proposed for the hybrid magnet to eliminate the inhomogeneous magnetic field components in the practical fabrication. The HTS insert magnet design had a current margin of 45.64% in terms of the perpendicular magnetic field intensity and the maximum hoop stress was reduced to 260 MPa with binding. There were in total eight shim coils, including two Nb3Sn zonal coils located between the insert magnet and the background magnet and six NbTi tesseral coils placed outside the background magnet. Radio amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (RASER) was recently discovered in a low‐field NMR spectrometer incorporating a highly specialized radio‐frequency resonator, where a high degree of proton‐spin polarization was achieved by reversible parahydrogen exchange. RASER activity, which results from the coherent coupling between the nuclear spins and the inductive detector, can overcome the limits of frequency resolution in NMR. Here we show that this phenomenon is not limited to low magnetic fields or the use of resonators with high‐quality factors. We use a commercial bench‐top 1.4 T NMR spectrometer in conjunction with pairwise parahydrogen addition producing proton‐hyperpolarized molecules in the Earth's magnetic field (ALTADENA condition) or in a high magnetic field (PASADENA condition) to induce RASER without any radio‐frequency excitation pulses. The results demonstrate that RASER activity can be observed on virtually any NMR spectrometer and measures most of the important NMR parameters with high precision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel halogen‐free flame retardant copolyamide 6,6 (FR‐PA66) was prepared successfully by in situ polymerizing with adipic acid hexamethylene salt and 2‐carboxy ethyl (phenyl) phosphinic acid (CEPPA). The elemental composition and chemical structure of FR‐PA66 were characterized by energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and 13C Nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer. The flame retardancy, thermal stability, and morphology of char residues were also investigated by the limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL 94 test, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that FR‐PA66 samples had much better flame retardancy and char formation ability than pure PA66 after the flame retardant modification. The LOI values were increased from 24.0 to 28.0% by adding 6 wt % of CEPPA and all FR‐PA66 samples were rated as V‐0 rating in UL‐94 test. Furthermore, the thermal stability analysis indicated that in situ polymerization with CEPPA effectively decreased the initial decomposition temperature and increased the amount of char residue. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Eight novel chitosan derivatives bearing urea groups are designed and synthesized. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, and elemental analysis are performed to confirm the structural characteristics of chitosan derivatives. The antioxidant activities, including superoxide radicals' scavenging activity, 1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl radicals' scavenging activity, and hydroxyl radical' scavenging activity, of the derivatives are explored within different concentrations in the reaction system. In vitro fungicidal activity of these compounds is further tested against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum, Phomopsis asparagus, F. oxysporum f. sp. cucumebrium Owen, and Botrytis cinerea, respectively, particularly compounds exhibit significant control effect at 1.0 mg mL−1. The experimental results indicate that the products bearing urea groups show enhanced antifungal property and antioxidant activity compared with pristine chitosan. Meanwhile, their bioactivities follow some regularity on the whole, that is, they are related to the electron‐withdrawing property of the different substituted groups of urea. Derivatives with stronger electron‐withdrawing property will have higher biological activities. L929 cells are used to carry out cytotoxicity test of chitosan and chitosan derivatives by Cell Counting Kit‐8 assay. The results indicate that some of the samples show low cytotoxicity. The aim of this study is to evaluate the enhanced ability of various choline based ionic liquids (ILs) for dermal delivery of hyaluronic acid (HA). Eight ILs were synthesized via neutralization reactions, which were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and proton nuclear magnetic resonance. The enhanced capacity of ILs varied with organic acids. The IL formed by choline and citric acid ([Ch][Cit]) exerted the strongest ability to promote HA penetrating deep into the skin among all ILs. The enhanced ability of [Ch][Cit] were still maintained and even improved after diluted by water although it could be disassociated partially according to electricity. The moisture and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were employed to evaluate the effect of attenuating skin dehydration. As expected, the IL of choline and malic acid ([Ch][Mala]) and [Ch][Cit] increased moisture and decreased TEWL significantly by improving the penetration of HA into skin. Meanwhile, no irritation was observed on skin of nude mice after treatment by the three ILs which showed optimal enhanced effect. In conclusion, ILs could be high potential biocompatible carriers for facilitating HA dermal delivery to resist skin dehydration for medical or cosmetic uses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Histamine plays a key role in inflammatory responses via increasing chemokine and adhesion molecule productions and augmenting vascular permeability in endothelial cells. Rhodomyrtus tomentosa has been found as a rich source of structurally diverse and biologically active metabolites. In this study, the role of phenolic compound from Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Aiton) Hassk fruits in down-regulation of histamine-induced EA.hy926 endothelial cell activation was investigated. Herein, myricetin was successfully isolated from R. tomentosa fruits by HPLC and its characterization was identified by mass spectrometer and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. It was revealed that myricetin was effective in suppression of IL-8 and MCP-1 productions and adhesion molecule generation. Moreover, NF-κB activation was inhibited by myricetin via reducing IκB-α phosphorylation and p50/p65 subunit level. Notably, myricetin potentially attenuated vascular permeability of endothelial cells through decrease in eNOS phosphorylation and intracellular calcium elevation. These results indicate that myricetin from R. tomentosa possesses a promissing pharmaceutical property for the amelioration of endothelial inflammatory responses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: This compact but precision highly stable NMR time-domain relaxation spectrometer is most useful for quantitative material science measurements of both the mass and the mobility/dynamics/stiffness/viscosity/rigidity of hydrocarbons and polymers, both in the bulk and in sub-nano-meter and upward sized pores. It is highly useful for studying the properties of hydrocarbons in pores in applications such as recovered porous rock samples from oil reservoirs, and in fired biochar porous carbon samples, to give just two examples. In addition, applicable to both these fields of study is the ability to make NMR Cryoporometric measurements of pore-size distributions in porous materials, for sub-nano- to over micrometer sized pores. NMR Relaxation (NMRR) is an extremely useful quantitative technique for material science, particularly for studying polymers and porous materials. NMR Cryoporometry (NMRC) is a powerful technique for the measurement of pore-size distributions and total porosities. This paper discusses the use, capabilities and application of a newly available compact NMR time-domain relaxation spectrometer, the Lab-Tools Mk3 NMR Relaxometer & Cryoporometer [Lab-Tools (nano-science), Ramsgate, Kent, UK (2019)]. Being Field Programmable Gate Array based means that it is unusually compact, which makes it particularly suitable for the lab bench-top, in the field and also mobile use. Its use with a variable-temperature NMR probe such as the Lab-Tools Peltier thermo-electrically cooled variable-temperature (V-T) probe is also discussed. This enables the NMRC measurement of pore-size distributions in porous materials, from sub-nano- to over 1 micron sized pores. These techniques are suitable for a wide range of porous materials and also polymers. This instrument comes with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for control, which also enables both online and offline analysis of the measured data. This makes it is easy to use for material science studies both in the field and in university, research institute, company and even school laboratories. The Peltier cooling gives the precision temperature control and smoothness needed by NMR Cryoporometry, particularly near the probe liquid bulk melting point. Calibration transfer is commonly used for spectra obtained on different spectrometers or other conditions. This paper reports a multivariate transfer approach for 2D diffusion‐ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) measurements among high‐resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers on the basis of partial least squares (PLS) regression. As the test system previously published quantitative model to predict molecular weight of heparin, low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) was used. For multivariate modeling, piecewise direct standardization (PDS) and direct standardization (DS) were employed. PDS showed the best performance for estimating heparin molecular weight resulting in a significant decrease in root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) from 647 and 393 Da without standardization to 513 and 135 Da when PDS was applied for heparin and LMWH, respectively. DS is not recommended for high‐resolution NMR data. The study showed the success of standardization procedure in cases when multivariate models have to be applied to the 2D NMR spectra recorded on different NMR spectrometers. The proposed approach appears to be a valuable achievement towards application of transfer models also to 2D NMR data. A problem of data standardization exist, when multivariate model has to be applied to the 2D spectra recorded on a secondary NMR spectrometer. Piecewise direct standardization (PDS) successfully performed PLS calibration transfer between NMR devices with different configuration regarding quantitative assessment of heparin molecular weight. A series of symmetric liquid crystal (LC) dimers with the same chiral core (S)-1-phenylethane-1,2-diol ((S)-PE) have been synthesised, termed TBDA-(S)-PE, 3F3B-(S)-PE, 3F2B-(S)-PE, 1F3B-(S)-PE, 1F2B-(S)-PE, respectively. Chemical structures and LC properties of the five symmetric LC dimers were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectrometer (1H NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and polarised optical microscopy (POM). TBDA-(S)-PE displayed enantiotropic chiral smectic A (SmA*) phase while 3F3B-(S)-PE, 3F2B-(S)-PE, 1F2B-(S)-PE all displayed enantiotropic chiral nematic (N*) phase and 1F3B-(S)-PE displayed monotropic N* phase. The results indicated that the removal of the flexible spacers between the rigid mesogenic arm and the chiral core facilitated the formation of the N* phase. When the rigid mesogenic units are connected to the chiral core directly, the structure of the terminal fluorine group and the rigidity of the mesogenic unit played certain influence on the thermal properties of the LC dimers, but did not change the type of mesomorphic phase. Compared to 3F3B-(S)-PE and 1F3B-(S)-PE, 3F2B-(S)-PE and 1F2B-(S)-PE displayed wider LC ranges, respectively, suggesting molecular regularity had greater influence on LC-isotropic (I) transition temperature. Purpose: Undiagnosed dehydration compromises health outcomes across many populations. Existing dehydration diagnostics require invasive bodily fluid sampling or are easily confounded by fluid and electrolyte intake, environment, and physical activity limiting widespread adoption. We present a portable MR sensor designed to measure intramuscular fluid shifts to identify volume depletion. Methods: Fluid loss is induced via a mouse model of thermal dehydration (37°C; 15‐20% relative humidity). We demonstrate quantification of fluid loss induced by hyperosmotic dehydration with multicomponent T2 relaxometry using both a benchtop NMR system and MRI localized to skeletal muscle tissue. We then describe a miniaturized (~1000 cm3) portable (~4 kg) MR sensor (0.28 T) designed to identify dehydration‐induced fluid loss. T2 relaxometry measurements were performed using a Carr‐Purcell‐Meiboom‐Gill pulse sequence in ~4 min. Results: T2 values from the portable MR sensor exhibited strong (R2 = 0.996) agreement with benchtop NMR spectrometer. Thermal dehydration induced weight loss of 4 to 11% over 5 to 10 h. Fluid loss induced by thermal dehydration was accurately identified via whole‐animal NMR and skeletal muscle. The portable MR sensor accurately identified dehydration via multicomponent T2 relaxometry. Conclusion: Performing multicomponent T2 relaxometry localized to the skeletal muscle with a miniaturized MR sensor provides a noninvasive, physiologically relevant measure of dehydration induced fluid loss in a mouse model. This approach offers sensor portability, reduced system complexity, fully automated operation, and low cost compared with MRI. Commercial polystyrene Merrifield-type resins have been post-synthetically functionalised with BODIPY photosensitisers via a novel aryl ester linking strategy in continuous-flow. A unique synthetic advantage of post-synthetically modifying heterogeneous materials in flow was identified. The homogeneous analogues of the polymer-supported BODIPYs were synthesised and used as reference to assess photophysical properties altered by the polymer-support and linker. The homogeneous and polymer-supported BODIPYs were applied in visible-light photosensitisation of singlet oxygen for the conversion of α-terpinene to ascaridole. Materials produced in flow were superior to batch in terms of functional loading and photosensitisation efficiency. Flow photochemical reactions generally outperformed batch by a factor of 4 with respect to rate of reaction. The polymer-supported BODIPY resins could be irradiated for 96 h without loss of photosensitising ability. Additional material synthetic modification and conditions optimisation using an in-line NMR spectrometer resulted in a 24-fold rate enhancement from the initial material and conditions. Energy cane is a bioenergy crop with an outstanding ability to bud sprouting and increasing yield in ratoon cycles even in marginal lands. Bud fate control is key to biomass production and crop profits due to vegetative propagation and tiller dependency, as well as phenotype plasticity to withstand harsh environmental conditions. During the establishment stage (plant cane cycle), energy cane has a tendency for low root:shoot ratio, which might hamper the ability to cope with stress. Auxin is known to modulate bud sprouting and stimulate rooting in sugarcane. Hence, we treated a slow and a fast bud sprouting energy cane cultivars with auxin or controls (with and without water soaking) for 6 h prior to planting and evaluate plant growth parameters and metabolic profiling using two techniques (gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometer and nuclear magnetic resonance) to characterize the effect and identify metabolite markers associated with bud inhibition and outgrowth. Auxin inhibited bud burst and promote rooting in setts changing the root:shoot ratio of plantlets. Metabolome allowed the identification of lactate, succinate and aspartate family amino acids as involved in bud fate control through the potential modulation of oxygen and energy status. Investigating environmental and biochemical factors that regulate bud fate can be incremental to other monocot species. Our study provides new insights into bud quiescence and outgrowth in cane hybrids, with the potential to leverage our understanding of yield-related traits, crop establishment and adaptation to global climate change. Signal enhancements of up to two orders of magnitude in protein NMR can be achieved by employing HDO as a vector to introduce hyperpolarization into folded or intrinsically disordered proteins. In this approach, hyperpolarized HDO produced by dissolution-dynamic nuclear polarization (D-DNP) is mixed with a protein solution waiting in a high-field NMR spectrometer, whereupon amide proton exchange and nuclear Overhauser effects (NOE) transfer hyperpolarization to the protein and enable acquisition of a signal-enhanced high-resolution spectrum. To date, the use of this strategy has been limited to 1D and 1H-15N 2D correlation experiments. Here we introduce 2D 13C-detected D-DNP, to reduce exchange-induced broadening and other relaxation penalties that can adversely affect proton-detected D-DNP experiments. We also introduce hyperpolarized 3D spectroscopy, opening the possibility of D-DNP studies of larger proteins and IDPs, where assignment and residue-specific investigation may be impeded by spectral crowding. The signal enhancements obtained depend in particular on the rates of chemical and magnetic exchange of the observed residues, thus resulting in non-uniform 'hyperpolarization-selective' signal enhancements. The resulting spectral sparsity, however, makes it possible to resolve and monitor individual amino acids in IDPs of over 200 residues at acquisition times of just over a minute. One of the most essential prerequisites for the development of pulse Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) is the ability to generate high-power coherent mm-wave pulses at the electron precession frequencies corresponding to the magnetic fields of modern high-resolution NMR spectrometers. As a major step towards achieving this goal, an Extended Interaction Klystron (EIK) pulse amplifier custom-built by the Communications and Power Industries, Inc. and producing up to 140 W at 197.8 GHz, was integrated with in-house built NMR/DNP/EPR spectrometer operating at 7 T magnetic field. The spectrometer employs a Thomas Keating, Ltd. quasioptical bridge to direct mm-waves into a homebuilt DNP probe incorporating photonic bandgap (PBG) resonators to further boost electronic B 1e fields. Three-pulse electron spin echo nutation experiments were employed to characterize the B 1e fields at the sample by operating the homodyne 198 GHz bridge in an induction mode. Room-temperature experiments with a single-crystal high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) diamond and a polystyrene film doped with BDPA radical yielded < 9 ns π/2 pulses at ca. 50 W specified EIK output at the corresponding resonance frequencies and the PBG resonator quality factor of Q ≈300. DNP experiments carried out in a "gated" mode by supplying 20 μs mm-wave pulses every 1 ms yielded 13C solid-effect DNP with gains up to 20 for the polystyrene-BDPA sample at natural 13C abundance. For a single-crystal HPHT diamond, the gated DNP mode yielded almost the same 13C enhancement as a low-power continuous wave (CW) mode at 0.4 W, whereas no DNP effect was observed for the BDPA/polystyrene sample in the latter case. To illustrate the versatility of our upgraded DNP spectrometer, room-temperature Overhauser DNP enhancements of 7–14 for 31P NMR signal were demonstrated using a liquid droplet of 1 M tri -phenyl phosphine co-dissolved with 100 mM of BDPA in toluene‑ d 8. However, due to their lower magnetic fields, benchtop NMR spectrometers inherently produce weaker signal intensities. Here, PHIP is a well-established solution to this challenge. Consequently, we are expanding our cost-effective PHIP setup from a high-field NMR spectrometer (11.7 T) to include an additional benchtop NMR spectrometer (1.4 T), thereby enabling concurrent execution of PHIP experiments and measurements. Through the implementation of automated experimental protocols, we aim to minimize experiment time while increasing reproducibility. In this work, a non-isotope labelled propargyl alcohol sample is used at low concentrations to demonstrate our setup's capabilities. It could be shown that single-scan PASADENA experiments can be run with comparable signal enhancements at the benchtop as well as the high-field spectrometer. At 1.4 T, fully automated PHIP pseudo-2D measurements will also be demonstrated. Additionally, two different field profiles for the spin-order transfer of p-H 2 to 13C at zero- to ultralow fields are elaborated upon. The setup facilitates the measurement of carbon signal enhancement of more than 2000 on the benchtop NMR spectrometer, employing a straightforward one-pulse, one-scan experiment.
