181. Volcanismo jurásico del sector valenciano de la Cordillera Ibérica. Distribución y trama estructural

Abstract

En el sector valenciano de la Cordillera Ibérica se desarrolla durante elJurásico un volcanismo fundamentalmente piroclástico, con emisiones basálticas y traquibasálticas en el Pliensbachiense, Toarciense y Bajociense. La cartografía de los afloramientos permite definir dos alineaciones NW-SE (franja de Caudiel, alineación piroclástica de Alcublas), asi como un área más amplia de traza general NE-SW en las sierras de Javalambre y Camarena. Tal disposicion regional sugiere que las manifesiaciones volcánicas ocurren según dos direcciones principales de fracturación tardihercínica (NW-SE y NE-SW) y aún posiblemente a favor de los puntos de intersección de ambos sistemas estructurales. La dirección NW-SE ejerce el máximo control de la actividad volcánica jurásica, al igual que previamente durante el Triásico superior (línea ofítica de Altura).

Abstract

We introduce the 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST), a new high-multiplex, wide-field spectroscopic survey facility under development for the four-metre-class Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) at Paranal. Its key specifications are: a large field of view (FoV) of 4.2 square degrees and a high multiplex capability, with 1624 fibres feeding two low-resolution spectrographs (R = λ/Δλ ~ 6500), and 812 fibres transferring light to the high-resolution spectrograph (R ~ 20 000). After a description of the instrument and its expected performance, a short overview is given of its operational scheme and planned 4MOST Consortium science; these aspects are covered in more detail in other articles in this edition of The Messenger. Finally, the processes, schedules, and policies concerning the selection of ESO Community Surveys are presented, commencing with a singular opportunity to submit Letters of Intent for Public Surveys during the first five years of 4MOST operations., Published in The Messenger vol. 175, pp. 3-11, March 2019.

Abstract

The powerful combination of the cutting-edge multi-object spectrograph named MOSAIC with the world largest visible/near-infrared telescope, ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), will allow us to probe deeper into the Universe than ever before. MOSAIC is an extremely efficient instrument for obtaining spectra of the numerous faint sources in the Universe, including the very first galaxies and sources of cosmic reionisation. MOSAIC has a high multiplex in the near-infrared (NIR) and in the visible, and also has multi-integral field units (Multi-IFUs) in the NIR. It is therefore perfectly suited to carrying out an inventory of dark matter (from rotation curves) and baryons in the cool–warm gas phases in galactic haloes at z = 3–4. MOSAIC will enable detailed maps of the intergalactic medium at z = 3, the evolutionary history of dwarf galaxies during a Hubble time, and the chemistry as directly measured from stars up to several Mpc. It will also measure faint features in cluster gravitational lenses or in streams surrounding nearby galactic haloes. The preliminary design of MOSAIC is expected to begin next year and its level of readiness is already high, given the instrumental studies already carried out by the team., Published in The Messenger vol. 182, pp. 33-37, March 2021.

Abstract

We present a rare case of multiple intracranial arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs). A young female presented with headache and a left eyelid pulsatile swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated numerous dilated cortical veins, along with a prominent left superior ophthalmic vein. A diagnostic cerebral angiogram revealed 5 distinct AVFs including 4 dural AVFs (dAVFs) and a pial AVF (pAVF). The largest dAVF was at the superior sagittal sinus. The others included bilateral ethmoidal, torcular, and a pAVF arising of the right pericallosal artery. She was treated by endovascular transarterial Onyx embolization. Only the superior sagittal sinus fistula was treated via middle meningeal artery feeders with complete occlusion. Immediate follow-up angiogram also showed complete spontaneous occlusion of the untreated dAVFs and pial AVF. This case is exceedingly unique considering the multiplicity of AVFs, concurrent presence of pial and dural AVF, and spontaneous occlusion of all untreated AVFs after embolizing the largest shunting fistula. Abstract

Adalimumab (Humira) is a recombinant human monoclonal antibody against tumor necrosis factor alpha, which works by blocking the interaction of tumor necrosis factor alpha with its cell-surface receptors, thereby limiting the progression of inflammatory pathways. Its use is approved for several autoimmune conditions, including chronic plaque psoriasis, for which it has been prescribed as a first-line biologic treatment. Increased risks of malignancy, particularly nonmelanoma skin cancer and non–central nervous system lymphomas, have been reported with use of this drug; however, there have been no reports of central nervous system lymphomas. A 43-year-old man presented for evaluation following recent speech difficulty and a generalized tonic-clonic seizure. His medical history was significant for plaque psoriasis, for which he had been receiving treatment with adalimumab for 4 months. Magnetic resonance imaging scan of the brain with contrast agent showed a well-defined rounded enhancing lesion in the left temporal lobe with circumferential vasogenic edema. Mass effect was noted. Computed tomography scan of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis was unremarkable. He underwent excisional biopsy, and the preliminary intraoperative pathology report revealed a diagnosis of high-grade lymphoma. Subsequent analysis of morphology and immunophenotyping was consistent with primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the central nervous system. Use of adalimumab was discontinued. Following combination therapy with high-dose methotrexate and rituximab along with 20 sessions of cranial radiation therapy, the patient was disease-free at 14-month follow-up. Abstract

Purpose: The craniometrics of head circumference (HC) and ventricular size are part of the clinical assessment of infants with hydrocephalus and are often utilized in conjunction with other clinical and radiological parameters to determine the success of treatment. We aimed to assess the effect of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) and shunting on craniometric measurements during the follow-up of a cohort of infants with symptomatic triventricular hydrocephalus secondary to aqueductal stenosis. Methods: We performed a post hoc analysis of data from the International Infant Hydrocephalus Study (IIHS)—a prospective, multicenter study of infants (< 24 months old) with hydrocephalus from aqueductal stenosis who were treated with either an ETV or shunt. During various stages of a 5-year follow-up period, the following craniometrics were measured: HC, HC centile, HC z-score, and frontal-occipital horn ratio (FOR). Data were compared in an analysis of covariance, adjusting for baseline variables including age at surgery and sex. Results: Of 158 enrolled patients, 115 underwent an ETV, while 43 received a shunt. Both procedures led to improvements in the mean HC centile position and z-score, a trend which continued until the 5-year assessment point. A similar trend was noted for FOR which was measured at 12 months and 3 years following initial treatment. Although the values were consistently higher for ETV compared with shunt, the differences in HC value, centile, and z-score were not significant. ETV was associated with a significantly higher FOR compared with shunting at 12 months (0.52 vs 0.44; p = 0.002) and 3 years (0.46 vs 0.38; p = 0.03) of follow-up. Conclusion: ETV and shunting led to improvements in HC centile, z-score, and FOR measurements during long-term follow-up of infants with hydrocephalus secondary to aqueductal stenosis. Head size did not significantly differ between the treatment groups during follow-up, however ventricle size was greater in those undergoing ETV when measured at 1 and 3 years following treatment. Abstract

Background Dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) is an abnormal vascular connection between arterial and venous channels within dura mater. Although DAVFs have been linked to other types of intracranial tumors, this is the first case reporting the association between DAVF and an epidermoid tumor. Case Description A middle-aged patient with chronic headache presented with Borden type II DAVF draining into the right transverse sigmoid junction and was also found to have an epidermoid tumor over the right mastoid. The patient underwent staged embolization of the fistula through both transvenous and transarterial routes. Continuous intraoperative venous pressure monitoring confirmed marked reduction in intracranial venous pressure, and the patient's symptoms completely resolved. However, the fistula still remained. The residual DAVF was then surgically disconnected, and the epidermoid tumor was resected in the same procedure. Conclusions This case demonstrates a DAVF can be associated with an epidermoid tumor. Tumor can compromise the venous outflow, which can then lead to intracranial venous hypertension and development of the DAVF. Venous pressure monitoring offers an objective method to verify resolution of venous hypertension, which might correlate with resolution of clinical symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
