The goal of t-private circuits is to protect information processed by the circuit. This work presents the first practical power analysis evaluation of t-private logic style for FPGAs. Following the synthesis technique introduced at HOST 2012, a t-private S-box of the Present block cipher is synthesized and analyzed with respect to side channel leakage. The analysis is performed on simulated power traces as well as real power measurements taken from an implementation on a Virtex 5 FPGA. Classical Correlation power analysis and Correlation enhanced collision analysis are applied to detect first order leakages. Our results reveal a remaining first-order side channel attack vulnerability.

Antiquitates Judaicae), viz.: AJ, XVIII, 3, 3 / 63 (i.e. the so-called Testimonium Flavianum), AJ, XVIII, 5, 2 / 116 -119 (i.e. the references to John the Baptist) and AJ, XX, 9, 1 / 200 - 203 (i.e. the references to James the brother of Jesus). Within the context of contemporary historicity research outcomes, and employing an interpretist/constructivist episteme, a series of critical analyses was undertaken aimed at verifying to what degree the three passages in question may be deemed to be in any way authentic and/or historically reliable. The result of the investigation proves beyond reasonable doubt that no reliable extra-biblical/scriptural accounts exist to support the historical existence of, inter alia, Jesus of Nazareth, James the Just or John the Baptist. Certainly, no such accounts ever appeared in Josephus’ original texts. Furthermore, and most importantly, the three passages are confirmed to be total forgeries initiated in the first four centuries of the Common Era most likely by Origen and Eusebius respectively. What follows is a set of reflections on the nature of Christian morality. Having been reared on and given allegiance to a morality which claimed to be rigorous, comprehensive and distinctively Christian, I have spent at least the last thirty years unlearning this in the light of experience and observation. The morality of my youth now appears as an ethics of boundaries rather than of transformation.

The optimization of an interface for coupling supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (APCI-MS) is described. Data presented demonstrate that the internal diameter and length of the transfer line between the SFC unit and the APCI source are not critical in maintaining peak shape or retention time under the set of conditions tested. The inlet capillary of the APCI source optimizes at 75 μm I.D., thus maintaining peak shape while enabling the use of a full range of pressure gradients (8–37 MPa). A comparison of responses from an in-line UV detector, two quadrupole mass spectrometers and an ion trap is presented to demonstrate limits of detection and linear ranges for the SFC separation of a six-compound test mix.

Research has relied primarily on laboratory settings to examine how emotions and physiology are affected by acute experiences of stress. This is because it is difficult to manipulate acute stress outside the lab and without a discrete manipulation it is difficult to measure physiological and emotional arousal during acute stress. This study found evidence that everyday stress predicts temporary changes in blood pressure. The purpose of this study was to investigate Gray's (1987) behavioral inhibition (BIS) and behavioral activation (BAS) systems, and to identify divergent cardiovascular and emotional outcomes to natural stressors for each of these systems. The data from a set of within-day analyses do not suggest that BIS and BAS moderate the association between blood pressure, heart rate, and momentary affect (frustration, happiness, sadness, and stress) to everyday stress. End of day analyses examined potential enduring effects of stress. The data suggest that there are gender differences in the extent to which everyday stress predicts end of day averages of blood pressure and heart rate. Women had lower overall systolic blood pressure, including on more stressful days. In contrast, men tended to have higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure during stress, and a trend suggested that they have higher diastolic blood pressure on more stressful days. In addition, the data suggest that sensitivity to BIS and BAS is associated with daily affect. In particular, BIS sensitivity predicted daily negative affect and BAS sensitivity predicted both daily positive affect as well as greater positive affect on days with more stressors.

Identifying immune biomarkers in healthy humans that indicate an increased susceptibility to upper respiratory tract illness (URTI) is necessary to develop improved diagnostic and treatment strategies. URTI is associated with substantial socio-economic and personal cost. Small to moderate reductions in the severity and duration of illness could lead to substantial reductions in these costs. This thesis investigated the relationship between the immune system and URTI in healthy individuals utilising exercise as a model of stress. Chapter 2 (Section 2.2) reviews the effects of exercise on the immune system and URTI, with a particular focus on the way in which exercise can be used to better understand the role of the salivary antimicrobial proteins (AMPs) lactoferrin and lysozyme in host defence. Determining mucosal immune status, that is the condition of the immune system at body surfaces interfacing with the external environment, is necessary to understand the role of the immune system in host defence. Exercise-related disturbances in the immune system may increase susceptibility to URTI, particularly when prolonged intense exercise is undertaken frequently. Th e link between exercise-induced disturbances in immunity and URTI risk suggests that exercise may be a useful model by which to study the relationship between immunity and illness in healthy individuals.

The reflex mechanism of the short-latency inhibitory reflex to transient loading of human inspiratory muscles is unresolved. Muscle afferents mediate this reflex, but they may act via pontomedullary inspiratory centers, other bulbar networks, or spinal circuits. We hypothesized that altered chemical drive to breathe would alter the initial inhibitory reflex if the neural pathways involve inspiratory medullary centers. Inspiration was transiently loaded in 11 subjects during spontaneous hypercapnic hyperpnea and matched voluntary hyperventilation. Electromyographic activity was recorded bilaterally from scalene muscles with surface electrodes. The latencies of the initial inhibitory response (IR) onset (32 ± 0.7 and 38 ± 1 ms for spontaneous and voluntary conditions respectively, P < 0.001) and subsequent excitatory response (ER) onset (80 ± 2.9 and 78 ± 2.6 ms, respectively, P = 0.46) and the normalized sizes of IR (65 ± 2 and 67 ± 3%, respectively, P = 0.50) and ER (51 ± 8 and 69 ± 6%, respectively, P = 0.005) were measured. Mean end-tidal Pco2 was 43 ± 1.5 Torr with dead space ventilation and was 14 ± 0.6 Torr with matched voluntary hyperventilation ( P < 0.001). A mean minute volume >30 liters was achieved in both conditions. The absence of significant difference in the size of the IR suggested that the IR reflex arc does not transit the brain stem inspiratory centers and that the reflex may be integrated at a spinal level. In voluntary hyperventilation, an initial excitation occurred more frequently and, consequently, the IR onset latency was significantly longer. The size of the later ER was also greater during voluntary hyperventilation, which is consistent with it being mediated via longer, presumably cortical, pathways, which are influenced by voluntary drive.
