This paper thoroughly examines the application of the Finite Element Method (FEM) to the numerical modal analysis of Herøysund Bridge, focusing on the theoretical backdrop, the construction process, and FEM techniques. This work examines the specific applied FEM approaches and their advantages and disadvantages. This Herøysund Bridge analysis employs a two-pronged strategy consisting of a 3D–solid model and a shell model. To forecast the physical behavior of a structure, assumptions, modeling methodologies, and the incorporation of specific components such as pillars are applied to both approaches. This research also emphasizes the importance of boundary conditions, examining the structural effects of standard Earth gravity, a post-tensioned load, and a railing and asphalt load. The Results section thoroughly explores the mode shapes and frequencies of the 3D–solid and shell models. The conclusion of this work includes findings obtained from the study, implications for Herøysund Bridge, and a comparison of both modeling strategies. It also incorporates ideas for future research and guides employing FEM 3D–solid and shell methods to design and construct more efficient, resilient, and durable bridge structures.

Endophytic fungi are increasingly being considered for their ecological role and effects on plant protection and nutrition. Their contribution in improving fitness can be particularly relevant in the case of semi-extensive tree crops, such as hazelnut. In this manuscript, the occurrence and properties of the species Arcopilus aureus are reviewed, following its finding as a component of the endophytic microbiome of hazelnut in the distant geographic and climatic contexts of Poland and Italy, representing an indication of its widespread association with this plant and a possible role in protection against biotic adversities.

Access to safe sanitation is a basic requirement for human well-being and is critical for protecting public health and preventing environmental contamination at the community level. The increasing global risk of climate-related disasters exacerbates the likelihood of traditional sanitation solutions failing and exposing communities to harmful pathogens. This risk is ubiquitous in Cambodia's flood-prone Tonle Sap Lake region, which has some of the lowest rates of sanitation coverage in the country. This study sought to design and test a targeted mechanism in the region to deliver sanitation subsidies to households in a vulnerable position due to climate and socioeconomic characteristics. Subsidy eligibility was evaluated using the poverty probability index for Cambodia, with thresholds set according to households' individual and community-level climate vulnerability. In a randomized controlled trial, offering subsidies increased the likelihood of successful sales conversions for climate-resilient latrine products among targeted households by 32 percentage points, indicating effectiveness for increasing market-based sanitation uptake. The research did not find evidence of widespread or sustained market distortion due to the subsidy program. HIGHLIGHTS Being offered a subsidy increased the likelihood that a given household would purchase a latrine by 31% (over ineligible comparison households).; The sales closing rate among eligible households in treatment areas was 38% compared to 6% among ineligible treatment households.; When offered a subsidy, households who were climate vulnerable were most likely to purchase a latrine.; No evidence of significant market distortion due to the subsidy was identified.;

Background: Rhinophyma is a benign condition caused by the excessive growth of sebaceous glands in the nasal tissue, presenting with symptoms such as nasal hypertrophy, erythema, and papules. Cases of basal cell carcinoma in rhinophyma have been reported in literature, but its etiological role remains unclear. It is uncertain whether rhinophyma is predisposed to neoplasm development or if their coexistence is coincidental. Material and Method: We conducted a literature survey to identify such cases reported over the years. Results: We identified 22 studies reporting a total of 47 cases in the literature, all involving male patients. The most common pattern of occurrence was the rapid growth of a nodular formation within the context of rhinophyma. Discussions and Conclusion: The elucidation of the association between basal cell carcinoma and rhinophyma remains challenging. The presence of multiple foci supports the theory that rhinophyma may play a role in their development, but larger studies are needed to establish a causal relationship.

Methamphetamine (METH) is a drug of abuse, which induces behavioral sensitization following repeated doses. Since METH alters blood pressure, in the present study we assessed whether systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP, respectively) are sensitized as well. In this context, we investigated whether alterations develop within A1/C1 neurons in the vasomotor center. C57Bl/6J male mice were administered METH (5 mg/kg, daily for 5 consecutive days). Blood pressure was measured by tail-cuff plethysmography. We found a sensitized response both to SBP and DBP, along with a significant decrease of catecholamine neurons within A1/C1 (both in the rostral and caudal ventrolateral medulla), while no changes were detected in glutamic acid decarboxylase. The decrease of catecholamine neurons was neither associated with the appearance of degeneration-related marker Fluoro-Jade B nor with altered expression of α-synuclein. Rather, it was associated with reduced free radicals and phospho-cJun and increased heat shock protein-70 and p62/sequestosome within A1/C1 cells. Blood pressure sensitization was not associated with altered arterial reactivity. These data indicate that reiterated METH administration may increase blood pressure persistently and may predispose to an increased cardiovascular response to METH. These data may be relevant to explain cardiovascular events following METH administration and stressful conditions.

Graphene nanoplatelets (UGZ–1004) are emerging as a promising biomaterial in regenerative medicine. This study comprehensively evaluates UGZ–1004, focusing on its physical properties, cytotoxicity, intracellular interactions, and, notably, its effects on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). UGZ–1004 was characterized by lateral dimensions and layer counts consistent with ISO standards and demonstrated a high carbon purity of 0.08%. Cytotoxicity assessments revealed that UGZ–1004 is non-toxic to various cell lines, including 3T3 fibroblasts, VERO kidney epithelial cells, BV–2 microglia, and MSCs, in accordance with ISO 10993–5:2020/2023 guidelines. The study focused on MSCs and revealed that UGZ–1004 supports their gene expression alterations related to self-renewal and proliferation. MSCs exposed to UGZ–1004 maintained their characteristic surface markers. Importantly, UGZ–1004 promoted significant upregulation of genes crucial for cell cycle regulation and DNA repair, such as CDK1, CDK2, and MDM2. This gene expression profile suggests that UGZ–1004 can enhance MSC self-renewal capabilities, ensuring robust cellular function and longevity. Moreover, UGZ–1004 exposure led to the downregulation of genes associated with tumor development, including CCND1 and TFDP1, mitigating potential tumorigenic risks. These findings underscore the potential of UGZ–1004 to not only bolster MSC proliferation but also enhance their self-renewal processes, which are critical for effective regenerative therapies. The study highlights the need for continued research into the long-term impacts of graphene nanoplatelets and their application in MSC-based regenerative medicine.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) represents a significant global health challenge and affects approximately 50 million people worldwide. This overview of published reviews provides a comprehensive understanding of the intricate correlations between AD and body composition, focusing particularly on obesity. We used a systematic approach to collect and analyze relevant reviews on the topic of obesity and Alzheimer’s disease. A comprehensive search of electronic databases, including PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar, was conducted. We searched keywords such as “Alzheimer’s disease”, “body composition”, “lean mass”, “bone mass”, and “fat mass”. We considered only reviews written within the past 5 years and in English. Fifty-six relevant reviews were identified that shed light on the multiple connections between AD and body composition. The review involves several aspects, including the impact of lean mass, bone mass, and endocrinological factors related to obesity, as well as inflammation, neuroinflammation, and molecular/genetic factors. The findings highlight the complex interplay of these elements in the development of AD, underscoring the need for holistic approaches to reduce the risk of AD and to explore innovative strategies for diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.

In the literature related to higher education, the concept of dropout has been approached from several perspectives and, over the years, its definition has been influenced by the use of diversified semantic interpretations. In a general higher education environment dropout can be broadly characterized as the act of a student engaged in a course leaving the educational institution without finishing the course. This paper describes the proposal of the architecture of a computational system, PDE (Predicting Dropout Events), based on machine learning (ML) algorithms and specifically designed for predicting dropout events in a higher level educational environment. PDE's main subsystem implements a group of instance-based learning (IBL) algorithms which, taking into account a particular university-course environment, and based on log files containing descriptions of previous dropouts events, is capable to predict when a student already engaged in the course, is prone to dropout, so preventive measures could be quickly implemented.

Encouraged by previous studies which recommended incorporating insights from Conversation Analysis (CA) into English conversation teaching to improve EFL students' oral proficiency, this paper reports on the findings from Phase I of a longitudinal study designed to investigate the impact of employing a CA-informed teaching (CA-T) model to improve Thai students' oral English proficiency. The aim of Phase I of this study was to engage local teachers in co-developing and piloting the CA-T model. In this phase, 16 purposively sampled primary and secondary English teachers from Thailand's southern provinces participated in an intensive 6-day workshop designed to (1) familiarize them with the instructional value of CA insights and key features of the CA-T model and (2) assist these teachers in creating CA-T lesson plans. Following the workshop, teachers piloted the lesson plans, provided feedback on the implementation process, reported on the perceived effects of the lessons, and offered recommendations for improving the CA-T model. This paper describes the content of the workshop, shares teachers' feedback about the CA-T lessons and implementation process, and presents preliminary findings as to the potential challenges and benefits of employing the CA-T model in Thai primary and secondary classrooms.

BackgroundLeft bundle branch (LBB) pacing could achieve cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in patients who cannot be resynchronized via the placement of the left ventricle (LV) lead into the coronary sinus. LBB pacing could improve cardiovascular outcomes in heart failure (HF) patients with LBB block who are affected by type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).Study hypothesisLBB pacing could increase the number of CRT responders and lead to the best clinical outcomes in HF patients with T2DM, inducing cardiac remodeling and improving left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) via microRNA (miR) modulation.MethodsIn a multicenter observational study, we enrolled 334 HF patients with LBB block and an indication to receive LBB pacing for CRT. In these patients, we evaluated the CRT responder rate, clinical outcomes, and miR expression at 1 year of follow-up.ResultsAt 1 year of follow-up, we had 223 responders (66.8%), 132 hospitalizations for HF (39.5%), 24 cardiac deaths (7.2%), and 37 all-cause deaths (11.1%), with a higher rate of HF hospitalizations (77 (69.4%) vs 55 (24.7%), p < 0.05), and cardiac deaths (13 (11.7% vs 11 (4.9%), p < 0.05) in non-responders vs responders. At the end of follow-up, we found the lowest expression of miR-26, miR-29, miR-30, miR-92, and miR-145 in LBB-pacing non-responders vs responders (p < 0.05), and a direct correlation between miR-30 (0.340, [0.833–1.915]; p 0.001), the 6-minute-walking test (6MWT; 0.168, [0.008–0.060]; p 0.011), angiotensin-receptor-neprilysin inhibitors (ARNI; 0.157, [0.183–4.877]; p 0.035), sodium-glucose-transporter-2 inhibitors (0.245, [2.242–7.283]; p 0.001), and LVEF improvements. C reactive protein (CRP) inversely correlated with LVEF improvement (−0.220, [-(0.066–0.263)]; p 0.001). ARNI (1.373, CI 95% [1.007–1.872], p 0.045), miR-30 (2.713, CI 95% [1.543–4.769], p 0.001), and 6MWT (1.288, CI 95% [1.084–1.998], p 0.001) were predictors of LBB pacing responders at 1 year of follow-up.ConclusionLBB-pacing responders evidenced miR modulation, which was linked to significant improvement of the cardiac pump. Specifically, miR-30 was linked to cardiac pump improvement and predicted responders at 1 year of follow-up in patients with T2DM.

Resumo: Objetos de aprendizagem são materiais destinados a facilitar a aprendizagem; sendo assim, avaliar sua eficácia é essencial para garantir a qualidade deles. Este artigo objetivou realizar a tradução e adaptação transcultural do Learning Object Review Instrument (Lori), para o uso no Brasil. Realizou-se estudo metodológico, transversal, de adaptação transcultural. A primeira etapa consistiu em tradução, retrotradução e submissão a Comitê de Especialistas bilíngue, sendo analisada a equivalência semântica, idiomática, cultural e conceitual. A segunda etapa abarcou um pré-teste com professores que utilizam objetos de aprendizagem. O perfil dos participantes foi resumido em frequência absoluta e relativa e medidas de tendência central e dispersão. A análise da clareza e da adequação cultural foi feita mediante frequência absoluta e relativa e teste U de Mann-Whitney para diferenças entre grupos. Participaram da investigação 34 professores, com média de idade de 41,9 (DP = 10,2) anos; 14 (41,2%) do sexo masculino e 20 (58,8%) do sexo feminino; com mediana de tempo de atuação de 9,0 (IIQ = 10,0) anos; 47,1% possuíam doutorado; 47,1% atuavam em Ciências da Saúde; e 61,7% trabalhavam na rede privada de ensino. Os elementos do Lori foram, em sua maioria, considerados claros. Dois itens não alcançaram 80% de clareza: “qualidade de conteúdo” e “feedback e adaptação”. Concluiu-se que o instrumento apresentou índice de validade de conteúdo para avaliar objetos de aprendizagem.
