152. The Use of an Audience Response System in an Elementary School-Based Health Education Program

Abstract

Background: The audience response system (ARS) allows students to respond and interact anonymously with teachers via small handheld wireless keypads. Despite increasing popularity in classroom settings, the application of these devices to health education programming has not been studied. We assessed feasibility, engagement, and learning among children using an ARS compared with traditional pencil-paper formats, (ARS) for a stroke health education program. Method: We compared outcome data generated via an ARS-based intervention to pencil-paper controls, including test scores and missing data rates among 265 schoolchildren 9 to 11 years old participating in stroke education. Among 119 children, we evaluated the feasibility of ARS use and explored student motivation with a 10-item questionnaire. We assessed facilitator experience with both methods. Results: ARS use is feasible. Students reported having more fun ("p" < 0.001), increased attention ("p" < 0.001), participation ("p" < 0.001), and perceived learning outcomes ("p" < 0.001) compared with pencil-paper controls. Test scores showed highly positive improvement for both ARS and paper without additional benefits of ARS on learning. There was no difference in missing data rates ("p" < 0.001). Educators preferred the ARS. Conclusion: The use of an ARS among children is feasible and improves student and facilitator engagement without additional benefits on stroke learning.

Abstract

Sea pen communities are United Nations General Assembly-designated Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems which occur worldwide in soft-bottom sediments where trawling often occurs. However, the ability of marine managers to assess, monitor and mitigate impacts to sea pens at national scales has been constrained by a limited understanding of their environmental requirements, geographical distribution and responses to trawling. In this study, we used random forest species distribution modelling (SDM) to predict the distribution of suitable habitat for 3 sea pen species (tall sea pen Funiculina quadrangularis, slender sea pen Virgularia mirabilis and phosphorescent sea pen Pennatula phosphorea) on the UK continental shelf, exploring the results relative to the distribution of fishing activity. Occurrence of all 3 species corresponded to areas of low current and wave velocity, where suspended matter in the water column was also low. However, for F. quadrangularis, the largest species, the models indicated substantially different drivers of distribution between the Greater North Sea and Celtic Seas ICES Ecoregions. This disparity appears to reflect modification to the range and realised niche of this species in the Greater North Sea, due to trawling impacts. P. phosphorea and V. mirabilis appear to be more resilient to trawling, with no clear negative relationships observed. Our findings illustrate the value of broadscale qualitative comparisons between SDMs and human activity data for insights on pressure-state relationships. When combined with robust distribution maps, this improved understanding of vulnerability will enable marine managers to make ecologically sound, defensible decisions and deliver tangible conservation outcomes for sea pen communities.

174. Teachers' Perceptions of Strategies and Skills Affecting Learning of Gifted 7th Graders in English Classes

Abstract

This study was conducted in 11 schools across 5 school districts and solicited responses from 20 teachers. This study found a relationship between instructional strategies appropriate for gifted students and teachers' perceptions of contributions the strategies made to learning. The literature review section examined the modern focus on gifted education. This study included a cursory examination of how American gifted students compare to the preparation and performance of their international counterparts (Ross, 1993). The literature also provided a glimpse into what motivates gifted students. The literature review also discussed several other selected factors such as family stability and known effective instructional techniques for gifted students (Beck, 2001; Coleman, 2006; Corbett & Wilson, 2002; Reis, Colbert, & Hebert 2005). The literature was examined with a focus on current instructional strategies and learning skills. The literature established that despite teacher perceptions, given appropriate instructional strategies, the limit for student achievement is immeasurable (Gentry & Neu, 1998). Data analysis was facilitated by cross-tabulation using the statistical package for the social sciences. Responses to each survey item regarding the frequency of use, motivation for use, and location learned for each instructional strategy and each learning skill were cross-tabulated against each other to determine positive comparisons. The teacher responses were examined using comparative analysis because the sample size was small. Data analysis of teacher responses was presented in tables. A large percentage (89.2%) of respondents indicated that they frequently used specialized instructional strategies and learning skills and felt these strategies contributed to gifted students' learning. The use of the strategies and skills were most likely representative of what gifted students in 7th grade English classes are experiencing in the region in and around the suburbs and city of Los Angeles.
