Although rabies kills approximately 60,000 people globally every year, vaccination of over 70 per cent of the canine population has been shown to eliminate the disease in both dogs and human beings. In some rabies endemic countries, owners are able to vaccinate their dogs through private veterinary clinics. However, uptake of dog vaccinations through private veterinary clinics is often low in many rabies endemic countries. In this study, the authors examined the sociodemographic factors which predicted low private rabies vaccination coverage in Blantyre, Malawi. Data on 23,205 dogs were recorded during a door‐to‐door rabies vaccination programme in 2016. A multivariable logistic regression model was built to identify factors associated with private rabies vaccination. Negative predictors of private vaccination included increasing poverty levels, higher housing densities, male dogs, pregnant or lactating dogs, and puppies and dogs allowed to roam. In contrast, neutered and healthy dogs had greater odds of being privately vaccinated. The present study demonstrated that low private rabies vaccination coverage can be accurately predicted by sociodemographic factors. This information may help inform public health interventions which deliver mass vaccination programmes in rabies endemic countries.

Wounds in working donkeys are a common and preventable welfare problem in many countries. Mutilations, iatrogenic injuries carried out by owners, are a particularly distressing welfare issue. However, little is known about their nature and prevalence. The project aim was to assess the general health and establish the prevalence, nature and severity of mutilations and other skin wounds in donkeys from several communities in Tamil Nadu, India, that were part of a donkey welfare initiative run by the Worldwide Veterinary Service charity. Five hundred and eighty‐two donkeys were examined from five locations and data collected using a predesigned, smartphone app between October 2016 and July 2017. The study revealed that 298 wounds were present in a total of 227 donkeys (39.0 per cent of the population). Mutilations, comprising nose‐splitting, ear‐splitting and branding, were the most common type of skin wound, comprising 62.8 per cent of all wounds. Poorly fitting harnesses and hobbles were also a common cause of injury. These data can be used to design future‐targeted and focused, educational interventions to reduce mutilation practices which are a common and important welfare issue. Further outreach initiatives are urgently needed to improve welfare of donkeys in these regions.

The wind turbine is playing an increasingly important role in the generation of green electricity. The structural integrity and maintenance of the wind turbine blade is a critical issue in service due to the harsh operating environments. In this paper, the delamination in glass fibre composite joints of a wind turbine blade is detected using the non-contact microwave imaging with an open-ended waveguide. The existence and extent of the delaminated region could be found from the generated images. Thickness variation and the presence of the web can be identified as well. The optimum inspection frequency range is investigated, which offers a reference for future applications. By comparison, the phase profiling provided by the scanning shows better performance for the delamination detection rather than the magnitude profiling.

The article discusses a research and information on landslides, shrink-swell and dissolution of soluble rocks conducted by the organization British Geological Survey's Shallow Geohazards Team and also discusses its effect in Great Britain. It also discusses the use of satellite imagery or aerial photographs supported by field investigation. It also states that since 2005, more than a million people in Great Britain has made use of the vital information on geohazards.

We report 2 cases of pleomorphic adenoma with unusual radiologic findings. CT showed lacrimal gland masses dominated by low-density areas resembling cysts. Pathology revealed the lesions to be pleomorphic adenomas with myxomatous and/or cartilaginous features.

This article presents the author's reaction to hearing a negative comment from a friend about the Cap'n Crunch snack food. The snack food was the author's favorite and he believes that it is the best food there is. The negative comment from his friend came after the author was discussing with him his fondness for the snack food. The incident ended their friendship.
