Abstract

This paper describes how to accomplish multi-dimensional separation of concerns (MDSOC) with Hyper/J/sup TM/, a tool available for free download, in the context of standard Java/sup TM/ development. Hyper/J does not require any special languages or language variants, compilers, development environments, or processes - it works with standard Java, using any compiler, development environment, methodology and process. It can be used at any stage of the software lifecycle - from design and initial development of code, to the evolution of pre-existing code (whether or not it was developed using Hyper/J), to the adaptation and integration of separately developed components.

Abstract

Hyper/J supports a new approach to constructing, integrating and evolving software, called multi-dimensional separation of concerns. Developers can decompose and organize code and other artifacts according to multiple arbitrary criteria (concerns) simultaneously - even after the software has been implemented - and synthesize or integrate the pieces into larger-scale components and systems. Hyper/J facilitates several common development and evolution activities non-invasively, including: adaptation and customization, mix-and-match of features, reconciliation and integration of multiple domain models, reuse, product line management, extraction or replacement of existing parts of software, and on-demand remodularization. Hyper/J works with standard Java software, not requiring special compilers or environments. This demonstration shows it in action in a number of software engineering scenarios at different stages of the software life-cycle.

158. In vivo serotonin 5HT(2A) receptor binding and personality traits in healthy subjects: a positron emission tomography study

Abstract

Using positron emission tomography (PET) and [(11)C]raclopride, an association between striatal D(2) dopamine receptors and emotional detachment has been recently reported. Several laboratory findings indicate a link between the serotoninergic system and harm avoidance. In this study we investigated, in a group of healthy volunteers, the relationship between the in vivo binding of 3-(2'-[(18)F]fluoroethyl) spiperone ([(18)F]FESP) to cortical 5HT(2) and striatal D(2) receptors and three personality dimensions, i.e., "novelty seeking," "reward dependence," and "harm avoidance." Eleven healthy volunteers were evaluated by means of the Tridimensional personality Questionnaire (C. R., Arch. Gen. Psychiatry 44: 573-588.) and underwent a PET scan with [(18)F] FESP. Harm avoidance showed a significant inverse correlation with [(18)F] FESP binding in the cerebral cortex, particularly in the frontal cortex (R (2) = -0.709, P = 0.0145) and left parietal cortex (R = -0.629, P = 0.038) but not in the basal ganglia (r = -0.176, P = 0.651). Similar results were obtained using SPM at a P threshold of 0.05. No significant correlation was observed with novelty seeking or reward dependence. In the cerebral cortex, high values of [(18)F]FESP binding values are associated with a high tendency to avoid danger, indicating involvement of the serotoninergic system and, in particular, 5HT(2A) receptors, in this trait of personality. The results of this as well as of previous studies on personality dimensions indicate the existence of a relationship between behavioral and neurobiological factors. In addition these results support the concept that the variability of PET data may be explained by neurochemical differences related to the prevalence of specific personality traits.

Abstract

This paper uses unique data from rural Mexico to examine the supply of immigrant hired labour to US farms. Econometric evidence indicates that immigration policy reforms had unintended consequences for farm labour supply. The long-term trend in migration from rural Mexico to US farms is decreasing, and in recent years, US farms have drawn more labour from remote and less developed areas of rural Mexico. Other high income countries, as well as some developing nations, mirror the US in reliance on foreign agricultural workers. Our analysis questions the sustainability of an agricultural system that depends on foreign sources of labour, and highlights the importance of labour productivity-enhancing technological change.

Abstract

We analyzed thymocyte and thymic regulatory T cell (CD4SPCD25+Foxp3+cells, Treg) development in thymoma with and without myasthenia gravis (MG, MG-thymoma, non-MG-thymoma) and in MG-associated non-neoplastic thymus (MG-NNT). An increased number of immature CD4+CD8(-)CD3(-) thymocytes through the CD4+CD8+ to CD4+CD8(-) transition and an abnormal T cell receptor Vbeta (TCRVbeta) development through the CD4+CD8+ to CD4(-)CD8+ transition were seen both in MG-and non-MG-thymomas. Terminal thymopoiesis, i.e., CD45RA+ cells within the CD4+CD8(-)CD3+ and CD8+CD4(-)CD3+ subsets, was skewed towards the CD4+ compartment in MG-thymoma and CD8+ compartment in non-MG-thymoma, but thymic export was increased only in the latter in keeping with the hypothesis that CD8+ lymphocytes may play a role in the initial stages of autosensitization and in disagreement with the relevance of an increased output of CD4+ T lymphocytes in paraneoplastic MG. Treg level in normal thymus and MG-NNT and both MG- and non-MG-thymoma was similar, and TCRVbeta development in Treg cells was slightly altered in thymoma but irrespective of MG presence. Thus, the relevance of a defective Treg development in MG context remains to be established. Most alterations in thymopoiesis were corrected by therapeutic corticosteroid administration, and the effects of steroid administration may be mediated by thymic microenvironment.

Abstract

Renal involvement is a major cause of morbidity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Histologic examination of renal tissue using light microscopy, immunofluorescent staining, and electron microscopy permit identification of glomerular immune complex deposits in virtually all patients with SLE. We report a patient who fulfilled four American College of Rheumatology criteria for the classification of SLE whose clinical course was consistent with SLE, yet whose renal failure resulted from focal glomerulosclerosis that was not mediated by immune complexes. The characteristics of this case of focal glomerulosclerosis that differentiate it from healed focal proliferative glomerulonephritis are discussed.
