Abstract

Timing attacks are a challenge for current intrusion detection solutions. Timing attacks are dangerous for web applications because they may leak information about side channel vulnerabilities. This paper presents a massive-multi-sensor zero-configuration Intrusion Detection System that is especially good at detecting timing attacks. Unlike current solutions, the proposed Intrusion Detection System uses a huge number of sensors for attack detection. These sensors include sensors automatically inserted into web application or into the frameworks used to build web applications. With this approach the Intrusion Detection System is able to detect sophisticated attacks like timing attacks or other brute-force attacks with increased accuracy. Abstract

BACKGROUND: The aim of the Betaferon Efficacy Yielding Outcomes of a New Dose (BEYOND) trial was to compare the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of 250 microg or 500 microg interferon beta-1b with glatiramer acetate for treating relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. METHODS: Between November, 2003, and June, 2005, 2447 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis were screened and 2244 patients were enrolled in this prospective, multicentre, randomised trial. Patients were randomly assigned 2:2:1 by block randomisation with regional stratification to receive one of two doses of interferon beta-1b (250 microg or 500 microg) subcutaneously every other day or 20 mg glatiramer acetate subcutaneously every day. The primary outcome was relapse risk, defined as new or recurrent neurological symptoms separated by at least 30 days from the preceding event and that lasted at least 24 h. Secondary outcomes were progression on the expanded disability status scale (EDSS) and change in T1-hypointense lesion volume. Clinical outcomes were assessed quarterly for 2.0-3.5 years; MRI was done at screening and annually thereafter. Analysis was by per protocol. This study is registered, number NCT00099502. 157. Gas bubble formation in fermenting and non-fermenting yeasts

Abstract

English: Literature previously suggested that intracellular gas bubble formation cannot occur in microorganisms even under high gas supersaturation. This observation was disproved with the discovery of gas bubbles in the yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baking industry) and Saccharomyces pastorianus (Brewing industry). As a result the missing link between the excessive production of carbon dioxide (CO2) by alcoholic fermentation inside the yeast cells and the vigorous release of this CO2 into the surrounding environment was uncovered. Further investigations proved that CO2 was indeed the gas contained inside these gas bubbles yet additional analysis of this gas composition was still needed. Here we investigate the occurrence of gas bubbles in yeasts that are fermenting and non-fermenting to identify any occurring differences and conserved status of gas bubbles formation in yeasts. Gas bubbles occurring in Crabtree-positive fermenting yeasts were observed to be more than those formed in the other yeasts (Crabtree-negative and strictly respiring yeasts). Although this was observed only on fermentable media, while on non-fermentable media less or no gas bubbles were formed. Furthermore, the Crabtree-negative fermenting and strictly respiring yeasts revealed similar results on both fermentable and non-fermentable media, with little to no gas bubble formation. Gas composition analysis was also carried out on three Crabtree-positive yeasts and it indicated the occurrence of five elements that were expected to be present in our samples. Moreover detection of sulphur compounds was observed in the same three samples with varying intensities. Nonetheless further research is still needed to confirm the point of production for these compounds, using more specific and sensitive techniques. From these findings it can be concluded that gas bubble formation is conserved in yeasts, with the amount of bubbles formed depending on the mode of CO2 production. In addition, it is possible, Afrikaans: Literatuur tot dusver het voorgestel dat intrasellulêre gasborrels nie in mikroörganismes kan voorkom nie, selfs nie onder toestande van hoë gas- superversadiging nie. 158. The role of cryptococcal 3-hydroxy fatty acids in mediating interspecies interactions

Abstract

English: Cryptococcus neoformans is today recognised as an important human pathogen that has arisen from a non-pathogenic terrestrial fungus. Its interactions (specifically antagonistic interactions with other microbes (such as amoeba) in its natural habitat, soil, has led to cryptococcal cells evolving elegant offensive and defensive strategies to survive in nature. Importantly, these qualities seem to be maintained and activated whenever cryptococcal cells engage in antagonistic interactions with other cell types i.e. when in competition with Pseudomonas cells, which is the subject of chapter two, as well as when engaging in parasitism with macrophages, which is the subject of chapter three. Towards this end, in this dissertation, special attention was given to the role of the secondary metabolite, cryptococcal 3-hydroxy C9:0, in mediating the fate of C. neoformans when in contact with these other cell types. In chapter two, it was sought to explore the interactive outcome between cryptoccocal cells and Pseudomonas cells. Both cell types can, in their individual capacity, lead to the development of pneumonia. While the host body has optimal conditions (temperature, ambient air, etc.) to promote the growth of these two pathogens, their growth may be limited by the available nutrients within the confined space of the host lung. It is therefore reasonable to conclude that these microbes would engage in competition in order to exert territorial dominance over the other. To demonstrate this point in vitro, Pseudomonas cells were co-cultured with cryptococcal cells over a period of time. It was subsequently determined that cryptococcal cells dominated Pseudomonas cells. This domination manifested in a significant reduction (p = 0.05) in the number of Pseudomonas cells over a 24-h period. In order to determine if the observed domination could be as a result of the cryptococcal 3-hydroxy fatty acid, 3-OH-C9:0, negatively affecting the growth of Pseudomonas cells, Pseudomo, Afrikaans: Cryptococcus neoformans word tans erken as ‘n belnagrike menslike patogeen wat onstaan het vanaf ‘n nie-patogeniese terrestriële fungus. 159. Incidence and course of depression in multiple sclerosis in the multinational BEYOND trial

Abstract

Early experience in MS generated concerns that interferon beta treatment might provoke onset or worsening of depression. The objective of the study was to compare depression incidence in relapsing-remitting MS patients receiving interferon beta-1b (IFNB-1b) or glatiramer acetate (GA) in the BEYOND trial. 891/897 (99 %) of English, French, Spanish and Italian speakers among 2244 patients randomized (2:2:1) to receive either IFNB-1b 500 µg, 250 µg, or GA 20 mg QD for 2-3.5 years submitted Beck Depression Inventory Second Edition (BDI-II) scores at screening and serially thereafter, in which scores ≥14 indicated depression. Baseline BDI-II scores ≥14 were reported in 232/891 patients (26.3 %), with no meaningful difference among the three treatment arms noted at this or at any other time during the study including trial end. Percentages of patients depressed by BDI-II scores deviated little in any arm at any time (IFNB-1b 500 µg: 24.7 %, IFNB-1b 250 µg: 24.4 %, GA: 32.4 %). Antidepressant usage was likewise similar among the three treatment arms (IFNB-1b 500 µg: 33.7 %, IFNB-1b 250 µg: 31.8 %, GA: 28.8 %) as was depression severity and the frequency with which non-blinded treating physicians recorded depression as an adverse event (IFNB-1b 500 µg: 17.2 %, IFNB-1b 250 µg: 17.0 %, GA: 14.4 %). Treating physicians attributed depression to IFNB-1b 250 µg therapy in 53.6 % and to GA in 21.9 % of instances. This large, prospective, randomized-controlled MS dataset showed no increased risk of depression above baseline values with standard or double-dose IFNB-1b or GA QD treatment.

Abstract

Inter-individual differences in the feature distribution of electroencephalograms (EEG) during microsleep (MS) raise questions about the generalizability of the methodology, because methodology should have the same validity for subjects to be included in the analysis in the future as for subjects included so far. We address this question using leave-one-subject- out cross-validation (LOSO CV) to simulate inclusion of test data from future subjects. Investigations are based on EEG of 70 subjects across four studies conducted in our driving simulation lab. 9,297 MS and 10,264 counter-examples of sustained attention (SA) were included in the analysis. Three variants of sample balancing are compared: (1) none, (2) overall balancing, and (3) between-subjects balancing. Resulting classification accuracies range from 80% to 100% for 67 subjects, but for 3 subjects they are at 66.5%, 73.1%, 78.3%. Averaged across subjects, accuracies were (1) 90.2%, (2) 90.2% and (3) 89.1%. Thus, balancing might not be essential if LOSO CV is performed over a sufficiently large number of subjects. Results of standard CV must be regarded as optimistically biased.

Abstract

V.S.O.P. is a computer code system for the comprehensive numerical simulation of the physics of thermal reactors. The application of the code implies processing of cross sections, the set-up of the reactor and of the fuel element, neutron spectrum evaluation, neutron diffusion calculation, fuel burnup, fuel shuffling, reactor control, and thermal hydraulics of steady states and transients. The neutronics calculations can be performed in up to three dimensions. Thermal hydraulics is restricted to gas-cooled reactors in two spatial dimensions. Evaluation of fuel cycle costs over the reactor life time is made using the present worth method. A broad description of the features of the code has been published in Ref. /1/.

Abstract

MAbs generally exhibit complex heterogeneity including glycosylation, oxidation, phosphorylation, amino-terminal modifications, incomplete processing of the C-terminus, and asparagine deamidation. These variations in composition could impact their efficacy, stability, and safety. Monitoring and reporting such variations in therapeutic proteins is required by the FDA and other regulatory agencies. Two new MAbPac™ phases were developed to meet these needs. The MAbPac SCX-10 is a newly designed strong cation-exchange column for the characterization of heterogeneity of MAbs. This is a complementary addition to the existing ProPac® WCX-10 column that provides high resolution and orthogonal selectivity for MAb charge variant analysis. The MAbPac SCX stationary phase is based on nonporous, highly cross-linked styrenic type polymeric media with a proprietary hydrophilic coating. Sulfonic acid functionality is added through controlled radical polymerization grafting. These particles exhibit a wide range of pH stability with high selectivity and minimal band spreading. The MAbPac SEC-1 is a new size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) column specifically developed for characterization of monoclonal antibody (MAb) aggregates, enzyme digested fragments, and other size-based separation applications. The MAbPac SEC column is based on high-purity, spherical, porous (300 A), 5 μm silica covalently modified with a proprietary diol hydrophilic layer. This stationary phase can handle both high- and low- salt eluents as well as mass spectrometry compatible eluents. The MAbPac column is packed into a nonmetallic, biocompatible PEEKTM column housing to eliminate metal contamination from the column hardware that can compromise MAb separations. The stationary phase is designed to minimize undesired nonspecific interactions between proteins and the stationary phase. Various applications with relevant comparisons along with a demonstration of the ruggedness of these new phases are shown in this poster.
