Modern metabolomics platforms are able to identify many drug-related metabolites in blood samples. Applied to population-based biobank studies, the detection of drug metabolites can then be used as a proxy for medication use or serve as a validation tool for questionnaire-based health assessments. However, it is not clear how well detection of drug metabolites in blood samples matches information on self-reported medication provided by study participants. Here, we curate free-text responses to a drug-usage questionnaire from 6000 participants of the Qatar Biobank (QBB) using standardized WHO Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) Classification System codes and compare the occurrence of these ATC terms to the detection of drug-related metabolites in matching blood plasma samples from 2807 QBB participants for which we collected non-targeted metabolomics data. We found that the detection of 22 drug-related metabolites significantly associated with the self-reported use of the corresponding medication. Good agreement of self-reported medication with non-targeted metabolomics was observed, with self-reported drugs and their metabolites being detected in a same blood sample in 79.4% of the cases. On the other hand, only 29.5% of detected drug metabolites matched to self-reported medication. Possible explanations for differences include under-reporting of over-the-counter medications from the study participants, such as paracetamol, misannotation of low abundance metabolites, such as metformin, and inability of the current methods to detect them. Taken together, our study provides a broad real-world view of what to expect from large non-targeted metabolomics measurements in population-based biobank studies and indicates areas where further improvements can be made. Background: Structural variants (SVs), including deletions, insertions, duplications, and inversions, are relatively long genomic variations implicated in a diverse range of processes from human disease to ecology and evolution. Given their complex signatures, tendency to occur in repeated regions, and large size, discovering SVs based on short reads is challenging compared to single-nucleotide variants. The increasing availability of long-read technologies has greatly facilitated SV discovery; however, these technologies remain too costly to apply routinely to population-level studies. Here, we combined short-read and long-read sequencing technologies to provide a comprehensive population-scale assessment of structural variation in a panel of Canadian soybean cultivars. Results: We used Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencing data (~12× mean coverage) for 17 samples to both benchmark SV calls made from Illumina short-read data and predict SVs that were subsequently genotyped in a population of 102 samples using Illumina data. Benchmarking results show that variants discovered using Oxford Nanopore can be accurately genotyped from the Illumina data. We first use the genotyped deletions and insertions for population genetics analyses and show that results are comparable to those based on single-nucleotide variants. We observe that the population frequency and distribution within the genome of deletions and insertions are constrained by the location of genes. Gene Ontology and PFAM domain enrichment analyses also confirm previous reports that genes harboring high-frequency deletions and insertions are enriched for functions in defense response. Finally, we discover polymorphic transposable elements from the deletions and insertions and report evidence of the recent activity of a Stowaway MITE. Conclusions: We show that structural variants discovered using Oxford Nanopore data can be genotyped with high accuracy from Illumina data. Our results demonstrate that long-read and short-read sequencing technologies can be efficiently combined to enhance SV analysis in large populations, providing a reusable framework for their study in a wider range of samples and non-model species. Background: Studies on the public health consequences of COVID-19 pandemic showing data based on robust methods are scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate mental and physical health as well as living conditions and lifestyle habits in the general population before and after the COVID-19 outbreak in Sweden.Methods: The study is based on 2273 persons 16-84 years who responded to the national public health survey in February-May 2020 in Värmland county (overall response rate 45%). The differences between early respondents (before the outbreak, n = 1711) and late respondents (after the outbreak, n = 562) were studied using multivariate logistic regression, adjusting for background characteristics: age, gender, educational level, and country of birth. The same analyses were also completed in the corresponding survey carried out in February-June 2018.Results: Statistically significant differences between the groups were obtained for economic difficulties and worry about losing one's job, which were more common among late respondents, and for sleeping difficulties, which were more common among early respondents after adjusting for background characteristics. There were no differences in other living conditions nor in lifestyle factors. Prevalence of good self-rated health, high blood pressure, aches in shoulders or neck, anxiety or worry and stress did not differ between the groups. In 2018, the only statistically significant difference between early and late respondents concerned economic difficulties.Conclusions: Very few differences in living conditions, lifestyle factors and health were observed in the study population before and after the COVID-19 outbreak. The results suggest that, in addition to a possible decrease in sleeping difficulties, the prevalence of being worried about losing one's job increased among the employed after the outbreak. Introduction: White matter hyperintensities of presumed vascular origin (WMH) are an important magnetic resonance imaging marker of cerebral small vessel disease and are associated with cognitive decline, stroke, and mortality. Their relevance in healthy individuals, however, is less clear. This is partly due to the methodological challenge of accurately measuring rare and small WMH with automated segmentation programs. In this study, we tested whether WMH volumetry with FMRIB software library v6.0 (FSL; https://fsl.fmrib.ox.ac.uk/fsl/fslwiki) Brain Intensity AbNormality Classification Algorithm (BIANCA), a customizable and trainable algorithm that quantifies WMH volume based on individual data training sets, can be optimized for a normal aging population. Methods: We evaluated the effect of varying training sample sizes on the accuracy and the robustness of the predicted white matter hyperintensity volume in a population (n = 201) with a low prevalence of confluent WMH and a substantial proportion of participants without WMH. BIANCA was trained with seven different sample sizes between 10 and 40 with increments of 5. For each sample size, 100 random samples of T1w and FLAIR images were drawn and trained with manually delineated masks. For validation, we defined an internal and external validation set and compared the mean absolute error, resulting from the difference between manually delineated and predicted WMH volumes for each set. For spatial overlap, we calculated the Dice similarity index (SI) for the external validation cohort. Results: The study population had a median WMH volume of 0.34 ml (IQR of 1.6 ml) and included n = 28 (18%) participants without any WMH. The mean absolute error of the difference between BIANCA prediction and manually delineated masks was minimized and became more robust with an increasing number of training participants. The lowest mean absolute error of 0.05 ml (SD of 0.24 ml) was identified in the external validation set with a training sample size of 35. Compared to the volumetric overlap, the spatial overlap was poor with an average Dice similarity index of 0.14 (SD 0.16) in the external cohort, driven by subjects with very low lesion volumes. Discussion: We found that the performance of BIANCA, particularly the robustness of predictions, could be optimized for use in populations with a low WMH load by enlargement of the training sample size. Further work is needed to evaluate and potentially improve the prediction accuracy for low lesion volumes. A wide number of factors can affect the structure of the bones in the foot. In bioarchaeology, few studies about foot anomalies include population comparisons and changes across time. We aimed to identify normal and pathological variability that affected the foot in the recent history of West Mediterranean populations. Thus, we analyzed change in occurrence of rare variants, pathological lesions, entheseal morphology, and their probable causes. We studied 518 pairs of skeletonized feet dated from the 2nd–20th centuries CE, from Catalonia (Spain) and the region of Lazio (Italy). Moreover, a Neolithic series from Oman has been analyzed for contrast. We found that calcaneal spur, hypertrophic peroneal trochlea of calcaneus, periosteal reaction of talar neck, alteration of articular surface to lateral cuneiform, displaced talar neck to medial plane, osteophytes in cuneiform‐navicular joint, fused phalanges, and forefoot eburnation showed significant differences among countries. Contrasting by countries and dates, we noticed an increase in the frequencies of these variables from Spain over the centuries. Conversely, there are no temporal differences among the Italian series. The period encompassing the 10th–19th centuries CE demonstrated the highest differences between countries. Lifestyle, occupations, footwear, and geography could be the origin of variability. Background: Vasectomy remains a safe, simple, and effective contraceptive option. Conflicting data on the trend of vasectomy use among men have been described previously at various snapshots in time over the last two decades. Objectives: This paper seeks to describe the trend of vasectomy utilization in the last 15 years using a nationally representative US survey. Materials and methods: We analyzed data from male respondents aged 18 to 45 years of the Cycle 6 (2002), 2006–2010, 2011–2013, 2013–2015, and 2015–2017 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) surveys. Population estimates are calculated based on the official NSFG instructions, accounting for the complex survey design. Multivariate logistic regression models are used to study demographic and socioeconomic factors associated with vasectomy use in men. Results: Baseline characteristics for men undergoing vasectomy do not differ significantly across survey years. Increased age, White race, marital status, higher education level, birthplace within the United States, higher household income, non‐Catholic affiliation, and higher number of biological kids have significant positive associations with vasectomy use. After accounting for factors associated with vasectomy utilization, there was a significant temporal decline in vasectomy utilization rates in all age groups across survey years which remained in subgroup analyses of all men greater than 25, 30, and 35 years of age. Discussion: This is the first population‐based analysis of US data to observe a decline in vasectomy utilization over the past two decades. The decline was statistically significant after accounting for all demographic and socioeconomic factors. Conclusion: There is a steady decline in the prevalence of vasectomy use in men from 2002 to 2017. Given the limited contraceptive options for men and the importance of contraception and family planning in the United States, further research is needed to understand the temporal decline. The blue land crab Cardisoma guanhumi is a species of commercial interest and is being harvested for human consumption. It is distributed throughout the Caribbean from the Antilles to the southern part in Venezuela and Colombia, with also records in Brazil. The first studies of this crab in Colombia date back to the early 1970s, which focused on biological and ecological aspects. Population studies in the Colombian Caribbean started in 2000, but they are scarce, and some are not published. For San Andrés Island, the Gulf of Urabá, and the Magdalena department, two studies have been done for each one, and for the three studies one is published, and the other is not. Of the unpublished studies, two correspond to graduate studies (Urabá and Magdalena) and one to a technical report (San Andrés). For the Guajira department, there is a published article that mentions some aspects of this crab population. For the department of Atlántico, there is a technical report. Regarding the department of Córdoba, there are two theses. The departments of Bolivar and Antioquia have three studies each. Most of these studies contain information about the sizes and weights of the blue land crab, and some of them also have information on the population density via burrow count. The largest average sizes and weights have been recorded on the island of San Andrés. The highest average population densities have been recorded for Bahía Concha in the department of Magdalena and the lowest for the department of Bolívar in the Corregimiento La Boquilla. Objective To characterize the epidemiology of temporal artery biopsy-positive (TAB+) GCA, including trends in incidence, seasonal variation and prevalence in Skåne, the southernmost region of Sweden. Methods All histopathology reports of TABs from 1997 through 2019 were reviewed to identify patients diagnosed with TAB+ GCA. Incidence rates based on the 23-year period and the point-prevalence at 31 December 2014 were determined. An alternative prevalence calculation included only TAB+ GCA patients living in the study area and receiving immunosuppressant therapy on the point-prevalence date. Results One thousand three hundred and sixty patients were diagnosed with TAB+ GCA (71% female). The average annual incidence 1997–2019 was 13.3 (95% CI: 12.6, 14.0) per 100 000 inhabitants aged ≥50 years and was higher in females (17.8; 95% CI: 16.7, 18.9) than in males (8.2; 95% CI: 7.4, 9.0). The age- and sex-standardized incidence declined from 17.3 in 1997 to 8.7 in 2019, with incidence ratio (IR) of 0.98 per year (95% CI: 0.98, 0.99). A seasonal variation was observed with higher incidence during spring than winter [IR = 1.19 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.39)]. The overall point-prevalence of TAB+ GCA was 127.1/100 000 (95% CI: 117, 137.3) and was 75.5 (95% CI: 67.7, 83.3) when including only patients receiving immunosuppressants. Conclusion Over the past 2 decades, the incidence of biopsy-confirmed GCA has decreased by ∼2% per year. Still, a high prevalence of GCA on current treatment was observed. Real‐world identification of pulmonary hypertension (PH) is largely based on the use of administrative databases identified by ICD codes. This approach has not been validated. The aim of this study was to validate a diagnosis of PH and its comorbidities using ICD 9/10 codes. Health records from Kingston Health Sciences Centre (2010 to 2012) were abstracted to identify a diagnosis of PH. Cohort 1 patients (n = 300) were selected because they had attended a cardiology or respirology clinic without knowledge of PH status. Cohort 2 patients (n = 200) were patients with a diagnosis of PH, identified using International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes at the time of hospitalizations (CIHI‐DAD) or emergency department (ED) visits (CIHI‐NACRS). These cohorts were combined and reviewed to validate the diagnosis of PH. These data were securely transferred to the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES). The diagnosis of PH from chart abstraction was used as the gold standard. The classification of PH into WHO groups, based on chart abstraction, was also compared to classification based on ICD code‐defined comorbidities. Cohort 1 and Cohort 2 were merged to yield 449 unique patients in the combined cohort. In the combined cohort, 248 of 449 (55.2%) had a diagnosis of PH by ICD code criteria. The mean age of this PH group was 70 years, and the majority were females (65.5%). One hospitalization or ED visit resulting in a diagnostic code for PH had a sensitivity of 73% and a specificity of 99% for a confirmed PH diagnosis on chart abstraction. When WHO classification by chart abstraction and ICD codes for comorbidities were compared, there was 87% agreement. Identification of PH and its comorbidities using ICD codes is a valid approach, and this single‐center study supports its application to identify PH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article introduces the new dataset Cohort Component Population Estimates for Ireland, 1911–1920 (www.doi.org/10.5255/UKDA-SN-854673). The dataset provides vital statistics and cohort component population estimates at a spatially-disaggregated level for the island of Ireland for the period 1911–1920. The raw data were digitised by the authors using official UK government statistics. The population estimates were then derived by the cohort component method. These data provide novel intercensal population estimates at the county level that will be beneficial for researchers working in historical demography, as well as in economic and social history. The data provided can be readily reused and extended by other researchers to produce further series and indicators. An example application of the data in this manner is Colvin and McLaughlin (2021) , who combine these population estimates with mortality statistics from the Spanish flu pandemic to demonstrate how demographic composition affects the interpretation of data on public health crises. To prevent and treat chronic diseases, including cancer, a global application of systems biology is needed. We report here a whole blood transcriptome test that needs only 50 μl of capillary (fingerprick) blood. This test is suitable for global applications because the samples are preserved at ambient temperature for up to 4 weeks and the RNA preservative inactivates all pathogens, enabling safe transportation. Both the laboratory and bioinformatic steps are automated and performed in a clinical lab, which minimizes batch effects and creates unbiased datasets. Given its clinical testing performance and accessibility to traditionally underrepresented and diverse populations, this test offers a unique ability to reveal molecular mechanisms of disease and enable longitudinal, population-scale studies.

Abstract Background Very large cohorts that span an entire population raise new prospects for the conduct of multiple trials that speed up advances in prevention or treatment while reducing participant, financial and regulatory burden. However, a review of literature reveals no blueprint to guide this systematically in practice. This Statement of Intent proposes how diverse trials may be integrated within or alongside Generation Victoria (GenV), a whole-of-state Australian birth cohort in planning, and delineates potential processes and opportunities. Methods Parents of all newborns (estimated 160,000) in the state of Victoria, Australia, will be approached for two full years from 2021. The cohort design comprises four elements: (1) consent soon after birth to follow the child and parent/s until study end or withdrawal; retrospective and prospective (2) linkage to clinical and administrative datasets and (3) banking of universal and clinical biosamples; and (4) GenV-collected biosamples and data. GenV-collected data will focus on overarching outcome and phenotypic measures using low-burden, universal-capable electronic interfaces, with funding-dependent face-to-face assessments tailored to universal settings during the early childhood, school and/or adult years. Results For population or registry-type trials within GenV, GenV will provide all outcomes data and consent via traditional, waiver, or Trials Within Cohorts models. Trials alongside GenV consent their own participants born within the GenV window; GenV may help identify potential participants via opt-in or opt-out expression of interest. Data sharing enriches trials with outcomes, prior data, and/or access to linked data contingent on custodian’s agreements, and supports modeling of causal effects to the population and between-trials comparisons of costs, benefits and utility. Data access will operate under the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability (FAIR) and Care and Five Safes Principles. We consider governance, ethical and shared trial oversight, and expectations that trials will adhere to the best practice of the day. Conclusions Children and younger adults can access fewer trials than older adults. Integrating trials into mega-cohorts should improve health and well-being by generating faster, larger-scale evidence on a longer and/or broader horizon than previously possible. GenV will explore the limits and details of this approach over the coming years.

Summary Objective Evidence‐based methods to lose weight are important in tackling increasing obesity trends in adult populations. More knowledge about persons who want to lose weight and do not/do need weight loss support is necessary to design effective preventive practices. Thus, the aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of desire to lose weight in the general population and the prevalence of health problems and health‐related factors in persons with overweight or obesity who want to lose weight and believe that they do not/do need weight loss support. Methods The study included 14 126 persons aged 30 to 69 years who responded to a questionnaire sent to a random sample. Persons with overweight or obesity (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) were divided into three groups: those who do not want to lose weight (n = 1236), those who want to lose weight but do not believe they need support (n = 5484), and those who want to lose weight and believe they need weight loss support (n = 1462). Results In total, 69% of the women and 59% of the men reported that they wanted to lose weight. The prevalence of hypertension, musculoskeletal pain, poor self‐rated health, anxiety/worry, and depression was highest among persons with overweight or obesity who wanted to lose weight and believed they need weight loss support. They were also more physically inactive and reported less social support. Conclusions To want to lose weight is very common among adults. People with overweight or obesity who want to lose weight and believe they need weight loss support have higher frequency of various health problems, including mental health problems, and less social support.

Abstract Background Phenotypic expression of pathogenic variants in individuals with no family history of inherited disorders remains unclear. Methods We evaluated the prevalence of pathogenic variants in 25 genes associated with Mendelian-inherited disorders in 3015 participants from 485 families in the Long Life Family Study (LLFS). Boot-strapping and Fisher’s exact test were used to determine whether allele frequencies in LLFS were significantly different from the allele frequencies reported in publicly available genomic databases. Results The proportions of pathogenic autosomal dominant mutation carriers in BRCA1 and SDHC in LLFS study participants were similar to those reported in publicly available genomic databases (0.03% vs. 0.0008%, p = 1 for BRCA1, and 0.08% vs. 0.003%, p = 0.05 for SDHC). The frequency of carriers of pathogenic autosomal recessive variants in CPT2, ACADM, SUMF1, WRN, ATM, and ACADVL were also similar in LLFS as compared to those reported in genomic databases. The lack of clinical disease among LLFS participants with well-established pathogenic variants in BRCA1 and SDHC suggests that penetrance of pathogenic variants may be different in long lived families. Conclusion Further research is needed to better understand the penetrance of pathogenic variants before expanding large scale genomic testing to asymptomatic individuals.

Abstract Background Studies examining incident heart failure (HF) have been limited to select populations. To examine incident HF with broader generalizability, there is need to assemble a HF-free cohort using a geographically-diverse sample. We aimed to develop and validate a simple medication-based strategy for assembling a HF-free cohort from the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study. Methods We examined REGARDS participants with ≥6 months of Medicare inpatient and outpatient claims data at the time of the baseline in-home study examination. To assemble a HF-free cohort, we identified and excluded participants taking HF-specific medications. To validate this approach, we evaluated event rates among this cohort and assessed diagnostic performance using Medicare claims-based definitions of HF as the referent standard. Results Among 28,884 eligible participants, 3125 were excluded from the proposed HF-free cohort, leaving a total of 25,759 (89%) participants. Depending on the Medicare definition used as the referent, the negative predictive value of this approach ranged from 95.0–99.2%. Negative predictive value was stable across age, sex, and race strata. Conclusions The approach to assemble a HF-free cohort in REGARDS can serve as the basis for future studies to examine incident HF in REGARDS and similar studies.

Abstract Background Very few population-based studies have investigated self-rated health and related factors in the increasing age group 85 years or older. The aim of this study was to examine self-rated health and its association with living conditions, lifestyle factors, physical and mental health problems and functional ability among the oldest-old in the general population in Sweden. Methods The study is cross-sectional and based on 1360 persons, 85 years of age or older, who answered a survey questionnaire sent to a random population sample in 2012 (participation rate 47%). Multivariate logistic regression was used as the statistical method. Results The prevalence of good self-rated health was 39% in men and 30% in women. Physical inactivity, impaired physical mobility, pain, anxiety/depression and longstanding illness were independently associated with poorer than good self-rated health, while factors such as gender, age, educational level, cash margin, living alone, social support, smoking, alcohol use, obesity, accidents and impaired vision/hearing were not. Conclusions While a considerable part of the oldest-old assess their health as good, not being physically active and having common health problems such as pain and depression as well as impaired physical mobility are associated with poorer than good self-rated health. This should be considered when planning how to improve and maintain health in the growing population of persons 85 years and older.

Further work is needed to evaluate and potentially improve the prediction accuracy for low lesion volumes. These findings are important for current and future population-based studies with the majority of participants being normal aging people.

Background: Although surveys and apps are available for women to report urination and bladder symptoms, they do not include their decisions regarding toileting. Real-world factors can interfere with toileting decisions, which may then influence bladder health. This premise lacks data per want of a robust data collection tool., Objective: The Prevention of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (PLUS) research consortium engaged a transdisciplinary team to build and test WhereIGo, a mobile data collection app for Android and iOS. The design goal was a comprehensive reporting system for capturing environmental, sociocultural, and physical factors that influence women's decisions for toileting. Aims include having (1) an innovative feature for reporting physiologic urge sensation when "thinking about my bladder" and shortly before "I just peed," (2) real-time reporting along with short look-back opportunities, and (3) ease of use anywhere., Methods: The development team included a plain language specialist, a usability specialist, creative designers, programming experts, and PLUS scientific content experts. Both real-time and ecological momentary assessments were used to comprehensively capture influences on toileting decisions including perceived access to toileting, degree of busyness or stress or focus, beverage intake amount, urge degree, or a leakage event. The restriction on the maximal number of taps for any screen was six. PLUS consortium investigators did pilot-testing. Formal usability testing relied on the recruitment of community-dwelling women at four PLUS research sites. Women used the app for 2 consecutive days. Outcome measures were the system usability scale (SUS; 0-100 range) and the functional Mobile Application Rating Scale (1-5 range). These scales were embedded at the end of the app. The estimated a priori sample size needed, considering the SUS cut point score set at ≥74, was 40 women completing the study., Results: Funding was provided by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases since July 2015. The integrity of the build process was documented through multiple 5-minute videos presented to PLUS Consortium and through WhereIGo screenshots of the final product. Participants included 44 women, with 41 (93%) completing data collection. Participants ranged in age from 21 to 85 years, were predominantly non-Hispanic White (n=25, 57%), college-educated (n=25, 57%), and with incomes below US $75,000 (n=27, 62%). The SUS score was 78.0 (SE 1.7), which was higher than 75% of the 500 products tested by the SUS developers. The mean functional Mobile Application Rating Scale score was 4.4 (SE 0.08). The build and informal acceptability testing were completed in 2019, enrollment for formal usability testing completed by June 2020, and analysis was completed in 2022., Conclusions: WhereIGo is a novel app with good usability for women to report toileting decisions, urination, and fluid intake. Depression is one of the leading causes of reduced quality of life and social functioning in patients. The prophylaxis of depression is a priority in preventive medicine. Achievement of prophylaxis requires the opportunity to detect the risk group within the population. i.e., individuals at high genetic risk of developing depression. This review describes the methodology and design of a project to develop a genetic test system based on a polygenic risk score (PRS) for developing depression taking account of the multiple ethnicity and multicultural nature of the Russian population. The study should yield the first data on the genetic architecture of depression (by the GWAS method) and produce polygenic risk scores (PRS) for developing depression. Development of a genetic test system based on studies of the Russian population in conditions of constantly decreasing costs of genetic studies will provide for an effective transition to the development of preventive medicine in mental health. Background: Body mass index (BMI) increases while cardiometabolic risk factors decrease in individuals in high‐income countries. This paradoxical observation raises the question of whether current measures of overweight and obesity properly identify cardiometabolic risk. Methods: A total of 3675 participants (59% women) aged 40–84 years with whole‐body dual‐energy x‐ray absorptiometry scans from the seventh survey of the Tromsø Study were included to examine the association between visceral adipose tissue (VAT) in grams and BMI, waist circumference (WC), waist‐to‐hip ratio (WHR), and waist‐to‐height ratio (WHtR). Further, their association with single cardiometabolic risk factors (blood pressure, triglycerides, total cholesterol, high‐density lipoprotein [HDL] cholesterol, glycated hemoglobin, high‐sensitivity C‐reactive protein), modified single components from the ATP Ⅲ criteria for metabolic syndrome (hypertension, diabetes, high triglycerides, and low HDL cholesterol), and metabolic syndrome were examined. Results: VAT mass was strongly correlated with BMI (r ≥ 0.77), WC (r ≥ 0.80), WHR (r ≥ 0.58), and WHtR (r ≥ 0.78). WC was the strongest predictor for VAT (area under the curve: 0.90). Compared to anthropometric measures, the associations between VAT and metabolic syndrome as well as single components of metabolic syndrome were statistically significantly stronger, but the clinical differences were likely minor. Conclusion: Although VAT mass showed statistically stronger associations with cardiometabolic risk compared to traditional anthropometrics, the clinical importance was likely small. ObjectiveAdministrative data are used to describe the pancreatic cancer (pcc) population. The analysis examines demographic details, incidence, site, survival, and factors influencing mortality in a cohort of individuals diagnosed with pcc.MethodsIncident cases of pcc diagnosed in Ontario between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2011 were extracted from the Ontario Cancer Registry. They were linked by encrypted health card number to several administrative databases to obtain demographic and mortality information. Descriptive, bivariate, and survival analyses were conducted.ResultsDuring the period of interest, 9221 new cases of pcc (4548 in men, 4673 in women) were diagnosed, for an age-adjusted standardized annual incidence in the range of 8.6-9.5 per 100,000 population. Mean age at diagnosis was 70.3 ± 12.5 years (standard deviation). Five-year survival was 7.2% (12.8% for those 80 years of age). Survival varied by sex, older age, rural residence, lower income, site of involvement in the pancreas, and presence of comorbidity.ConclusionsThe mortality rate in pcc is exceptionally high. With an increasing incidence and a mortality positively associated with age, additional support will be needed for this highly fatal disease as demographics in Ontario continue to trend toward a higher proportion of older individuals.
