Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common treatment for terminal knee arthropathy. Soft tissue balance is one of the key factors affecting the success rate of TKA. However, current measurement systems still face great challenges in terms of accuracy and timeliness. Herein, a novel force measurement system based on a smart spacer is proposed to measure soft tissue balance in a timely and accurate manner. The smart spacer is designed according to the simulated results, where six flexible pressure sensors with a high sensitivity of 99.56 N−1 and a wide detection range of 50 N are attached to the spacer base to directly detect the soft tissue balance force. Moreover, a soft tissue balance measurement system is constructed, which can measure the force at different positions, such as the extension position (0°), the middle position (45°), and the flexion position (90°), and display them on the computer in a timely manner. This novel real‐time knee soft tissue balance measurement system provides a way for surgeons or knee joint replacement surgery robots to accurately evaluate soft tissue balance and paves the way for improving the success rate of TKA and the patient's postoperative rehabilitation.

The embankment of the Qinghai–Tibet Railway (QTR) has been experiencing severe problems due to permafrost degradation, especially in warm and ice-rich permafrost regions. Based on ground temperature and deformation data of the embankment at location K1497 + 150 of the QTR in 2006–2018, the thermal regime and deformation process were analysed. The results showed that 1) the degradation rate of permafrost under the embankment was faster than that under the natural site without engineering construction, and 2) the deformation rate of the embankment had exceeded the safety range for the QTR embankment before adopting mitigative measures. In addition, this study evaluated the cooling effect on the underlying permafrost and working mechanism of two strengthening measures. Two measures, crushed rock revetment (CRR) and thermosyphons, were adopted to protect the underlying permafrost from continual degradation. The individual cooling effect of the CRR was not as good as that of the thermosyphons. However, the combination of the two could enhance the protective effects of each on the underlying permafrost, effectively cooling the permafrost and improving the stability of the embankment.

Amaranthus viridis is an important medicinal herb. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome (plastome) of A. viridis was repotred. It was a circular molecular of 150,452 bp in length and consists of a large single-copy region (LSC, 83,832 bp), a small single-copy region (SSC, 17,914 bp), and two inverted repeats (IRs, 24,353 bp for each) regions. The overall GC content was 36.6%. This plastome encodes 113 unique genes, including 79 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNAs, and four rRNAs. The phylogenetic tree of 18 Amaranthaceae chloroplast genomes supported that A. viridis was closely related to A. hybridus.

Bacillus subtilis is one of the widely used probiotics, which has strong stability and can survive and reproduce in animal intestines. Bacillus subtilis has synergistic effects with other probiotics or prebiotics, which is widely used in microbial feed additives. Bacillus subtilis has more advantages in viability in gastrointestinal tract than lactic acid bacteria and Bifidobacterium. Bacillus subtilis can regulate the intestinal flora of animals, improve growth performance, enhance immunity and intestinal health. Based on the physiological characteristics of Bacillus subtilis, the paper describes its application in animal production and its functions in regulating intestinal health, inhibiting oxidative stress and enhancing immunity, aiming at providing reference for the related application of Bacillus subtilis in animal production. Human UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (hUGT1A1) is one of the most essential phase II enzymes in humans. Dysfunction or strong inhibition of hUGT1A1 may result in hyperbilirubinaemia and clinically relevant drug/herb-drug interactions (DDIs/HDIs). Recently, a high-throughput fluorescence-based assay was constructed by us to find the compounds/herbal extracts with strong inhibition against intracellular hUGT1A1. Following screening of over one hundred of herbal products, the extract of Ginkgo biloba leaves (GBL) displayed the most potent hUGT1A1 inhibition in HeLa-UGT1A1 cells (Hela cells overexpressed hUGT1A1). Further investigations demonstrated that four biflavones including bilobetin, isoginkgetin, sciadopitysin and ginkgetin, are key constituents responsible for hUGT1A1 inhibition in living cells. These biflavones potently inhibit hUGT1A1 in both human liver microsomes (HLM) and living cells, with the IC50 values ranging from 0.075 to 0.41 μM in living cells. Inhibition kinetic analyses and docking simulations suggested that four tested biflavones potently inhibit hUGT1A1-catalyzed NHPN-O-glucuronidation in HLM via a mixed inhibition manner, showing the Ki values ranging from 0.07 to 0.74 μM. Collectively, our findings uncover the key constituents in GBL responsible for hUGT1A1 inhibition and decipher their inhibitory mechanisms against hUGT1A1, which will be very helpful for guiding the rational use of GBL-related herbal products in clinical settings.

ObjectivesH. pylori (Hp) infection has been indicated in the pathogenesis of gastric diseases including gastric cancer (GC). This study aimed at exploring the relationships between Hp infection and gastric diseases including GC in a large dataset of routine patients undergoing gastroscopy.MethodsFrom November 2007 to December 2017, 70,534 first-time visiting patients aged 18-94 years with gastroscopic biopsies were histologically diagnosed and analyzed. Patients' data were entered twice in an Excel spreadsheet database and analyzed using the SPSS (version 22.0) software package and statistical significance was defined as PResultsThe first interesting observation was age-related twin-peak prevalence profiles (TPPs) for Hp infection, gastritis, and advanced diseases with different time spans (TS) between the first and second occurring peaks. Hp infection and gastritis had TPPs occurring at earlier ages than TPPs of gastric introepithelial neoplasia (GIN) and GC. More patients were clustered at the second occurring TPPs. The time spans (TS) from the first occurring peak of Hp infection to the first occurring peaks of other gastric diseases varied dramatically with 0-5 years for gastritis; 5-15 years for GINs, and 5-20 years for GC, respectively. The number of males with Hp infection and gastric diseases, excluding non-atrophic gastritis (NAG), was more than that of females (PConclusionsWe have first observed age-related twin-peak prevalence profiles for Hp infection, gastritis, GIN, and GC, respectively, among a large population of patients undergoing gastroscopy. The second prevalence peak of GC is at ages of 70-74 years indicating that many GC patients would be missed during screening because the cut-off age for screening is 69 years old in China.

The human UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1), one of the most essential conjugative enzymes, is responsible for the metabolism and detoxification of bilirubin and other endogenous substances, as well as many different xenobiotic compounds. Deciphering UGT1A1 relevance to human diseases and characterizing the effects of small molecules on the activities of UGT1A1 requires reliable tools for probing the function of this key enzyme in complex biological matrices. Herein, an easy-to-use assay for highly-selective and sensitive monitoring of UGT1A1 activities in various biological matrices, using liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (LC-FD), has been developed and validated. The newly developed LC-FD based assay has been confirmed in terms of sensitivity, specificity, precision, quantitative linear range and stability. One of its main advantages is lowering the limits of detection and quantification by about 100-fold in comparison to the previous assay that used the same probe substrate, enabling reliable quantification of lower amounts of active enzyme than any other method. The precision test demonstrated that both intra- and inter-day variations for this assay were less than 5.5%. Furthermore, the newly developed assay has also been successfully used to screen and characterize the regulatory effects of small molecules on the expression level of UGT1A1 in living cells. Overall, an easy-to-use LC-FD based assay has been developed for ultra-sensitive UGT1A1 activities measurements in various biological systems, providing an inexpensive and practical approach for exploring the role of UGT1A1 in human diseases, interactions with xenobiotics, and characterization modulatory effects of small molecules on this conjugative enzyme.

Monoclinic lithium vanadium phosphate is a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, which has been widely studied in the past two decades. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) is an excellent method to investigate the local environments of target nuclei and the short/long range structural changes of materials. In this short review, SSNMR studies on a few important aspects of monoclinic lithium vanadium phosphate, including charge-discharge mechanism, lithium mobility/dynamics, carbon coating, cation doping and theoretical calculation on NMR shifts, are briefly covered.

Summary: Rich in numerous nutrients, undaria pinnatifida (UP) exhibited a broad spectrum of biological properties, including anti‐inflammatory, anti‐bacterial, anti‐cancer, and antioxidant properties. A sexual pigment protein complex known as phycocyanin (PC) was the perfect photosensitiser and had no negative effects. Due to their superior qualities, hydrogels were also widely employed in tissue engineering, medication administration, and food packaging at the same time. The aim of this work was to investigate the impact of UVB irradiation on the gel characteristics of PC‐UP hydrogels using UVB irradiation technology rather than chemical crosslinking approach. The results showed that the G′ value of PC‐UP hydrogel increased from 114.17 ± 0.58 Pa to 156.72 ± 0.82 Pa and the G″ value increased from 36.80 ± 0.79 Pa to 58.05 ± 1.06 Pa after UVB irradiation. At the same time, the texture properties of hydrogel were significantly improved, and the hardness, adhesion and chewiness were increased to 214.02 ± 3.85, 198.51 ± 4.25 and 195.81 ± 5.69, respectively. After UVB irradiation, hydrogen bond was formed in PC‐UP hydrogel to improve its thermal stability. In conclusion, the results show that PC decomposes with alginic acid, potassium salt, and sodium salt in UP under UVB irradiation to form a gel network structure, which enhances its gel properties. This study provides guidance for the photo response of PC‐UP hydrogels, provides ideas for the application of PC‐UP hydrogels, and broadens the application field of future hydrogels. BACKGROUND: Drought affects the characteristics of water use during crop production and so quantitatively evaluating the impacts is important. However, it remains unclear how crop water use responds to drought. To address this gap, water footprint (WF) and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) were calculated by remote sensing approaches to assess the effects of drought on crop water use. Rainfed maize is the most important crop in Jilin Province, and its growth and water use are more susceptible to drought. The present study explored not only the impact of growing season drought on the maize WF values in Jilin Province, but also the response of WF values to drought at different time scales. RESULTS: Spatially, 72.94% of the WFblue pixels showed a non‐significant increase, and the WFgreen in 68% pixels decreased significantly, being mainly concentrated in the middle region. Furthermore, the pixels affected by monthly time scale drought were mainly in the middle region, whereas the pixels affected by annual time scale drought were mainly in the western region. CONCLUSION: Drought not only affected on the source and structure of agricultural water consumption, but also had different effects on WF values at different time scale. These effects had obvious spatial differences. The present study systematically explored the effects of drought on the WF values for rainfed maize in different climate regions and a consideration of these effects could provide valuable information on rainfed maize growth and the agricultural water use response to a changing climate. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry. The experiment aimed to investigate the impact of plastic film mulching on the soil physicochemical properties and spring maize yield in the wind and sand erosion area of northern Shaanxi. The experiment utilized the locally recommended maize variety ZHONGYU968 and included three treatments: Surface mulching, inter-row mulching, and no mulching. The study analyzed the influence of mulching on the soil moisture content, pH value, organic matter, maize agronomic traits, yield, and grain nutritional quality. The results showed that in the 0-20 cm and 21-40 cm soil layers, the soil moisture content of the inter-row mulching treatment was higher than that of the no mulching treatment (P<0.05). In the 41-60 cm soil layer, both surface and inter-row mulching increased soil moisture content compared to no mulching (P<0.05). With the increase of soil depth, the pH value of all treatments exhibited a decreasing trend, with the pH values ranking as no mulching > inter-row mulching > surface mulching in different soil layers. Specifically, in the 0-20 cm soil layer, the pH value of surface mulching was lower than that of no mulching (P<0.05). In the 0-20 cm soil layer, the organic matter content of both inter-row and surface mulching was higher than that of no mulching (P<0.05), while in the 41-60 cm soil layer, the organic matter content of inter-row mulching was higher than that of surface mulching and no mulching (P<0.05). Maize under the inter-row mulching exhibited greater plant height, fresh ear weight, ear grain number, and yield than other treatments (P<0.05), with stem diameter and hundred-grain weight higher than no mulching (P<0.05). The crude protein and crude fat content of maize grains under inter-row mulching were 8.22% and 4.58%, The study indicates that the inter-row mulching is more suitable for spring maize cultivation in the wind and sand erosion area of northern Shaanxi and can be further promoted in the region. Nowadays, for chloasma, the conventional treatment methods are external drugs, chemical stripping and oral drugs, but for refractory chloasma, the treatment effect is poor and the recurrence rate is high. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the benefits of natural bioactive compounds in inhibiting chloasma through different mechanisms, and to develop new products to solve the problem of pigmentation. This paper first reviewed the pathogenesis of chloasma and the effects of natural bioactive compounds such as phlorotannins, procyanidins, tranexamic acid, curcumin, vitamin C, catechin, resveratrol and fucoxanthin on pigmentation, and discussed their effects on chloasma. These natural bioactive compounds were finally proved to have the effect of inhibiting pigmentation, especially the potential application of fucoxanthin in the treatment of chloasma, which provided a new idea for further research on inhibiting the formation of chloasma in the future.
