Air quality in subway systems is of interest not only because particulate matter (PM) concentrations can be high, but also because of the peculiarly metalliferous chemical character of the particles, most of which differ radically from those of outdoor ambient air. We report on the oxidative potential (OP) of PM 2.5 samples collected in the Barcelona subway system in different types of stations. The PM chemical composition of these samples showed typically high concentrations of Fe, Total Carbon, Ba, Cu, Mn, Zn and Cr sourced from rail tracks, wheels, catenaries, brake pads and pantographs. Two toxicological indicators of oxidative activity, ascorbic acid (AA) oxidation (expressed as OP AA μg −1 or OP AA m −3 ) and glutathione (GSH) oxidation (expressed as OP GSH μg −1 or OP GSH m −3 ), showed low OP for all samples (compared with outdoor air) but considerable variation between stations (0.9–2.4 OP AA μg −1 ; 0.4–1.9 OP GSH μg −1 ). Results indicate that subway PM toxicity is not related to variations in PM 2.5 concentrations produced by ventilation changes, tunnel works, or station design, but may be affected more by the presence of metallic trace elements such as Cu and Sb sourced from brakes and pantographs. Evaporative light scattering detection (ELSD) was applied to quantify HULIS (humic-like substances) for the first time in 2012 winter and 2013 summer at an urban site in Lanzhou. Water soluble organic carbon (WSOC), water soluble inorganic ions, and carbonaceous species (OC/EC) were also analyzed. The results show that OM (Organic Matter = OC × 1.6, constituting 45.8% to PM 2.5 ) was the most abundant species, followed by SNA (SO 4 2 − + NO 3 − + NH 4 + , constituting 23.4% to PM 2.5 ). The chemical species were in the order of: OC > EC > SO 4 2 − > NO 3 − > NH 4 + > Cl − > Ca 2 + > K + . The annual average concentration of HULIS was 4.70 μg/m − 3 and HULISc (carbon content of HULIS) contributed 6.19% to PM 2.5 and 45.6% to WSOC, indicating that HULIS was the most important components of WSOC. The concentration of HULIS was 2.14 ± 0.80 μg/m 3 in summer and 7.24 ± 2.77 μg/m 3 in winter, respectively. The concentrations of HULIS were relatively low and stable in summer, while high and varied dramatically in winter. The abundance of HULISc in WSOC shows a more concentrated distribution in Lanzhou, with a range between 0.28–0.57. The ratios of HULIS/K + were 6.25 ± 1.41 and 6.14 ± 1.96 in summer and winter, respectively, suggesting there were other significant sources in addition to biomass burning emissions. HULIS and WSOC exhibited similar seasonal variation and had a strong positive correlation. In addition to the good relationship (0.89) between HULIS and Cl − in winter, the great enhancement of HULIS with significantly high Cl − and relatively low K + in winter indicated that residential coal burning was probably an important HULIS source in winter. Correlation and back trajectory analysis suggested that biomass burning and secondary formation were also important HULIS sources and the contribution of HULIS from dust could be neglected. With the objective of estimating the impact of harbour activities on ambient PM 10 and PM 2.5 levels at the urban area of Barcelona, a one year long monitoring campaign was carried out in the context of the European APICE project (MED-FEDER-EC). This campaign was simultaneously conducted at the port and a central urban background site. A detailed PM 10 and PM 2.5 chemical speciation analysis was carried out with samples from both sites. Subsequently, a source apportionment analysis by means of the PMF receptor model was performed. Six common factors were identified, explaining local to regional emission sources (fuel oil combustion, industrial emissions, mineral-road dust resuspension, and road traffic emissions) and aerosol formation/transformation processes (secondary aerosols including ammonium sulphate and organic aerosols, and a mixed source accounting for aged sea spray and secondary nitrate). Around 50–55% PM 10 and PM 2.5 measured at the port was attributed to harbour activities: mineral matter from road dust and construction works of a new port area, vehicle traffic and fuel oil combustion. The estimated contribution of harbour emissions to the urban background reached 9–12% for PM 10 and 11–15% for PM 2.5 and is linked to primary emissions from fuel oil combustion but also to the formation of secondary aerosols. It becomes relevant to highlight the significantly higher contribution of secondary aerosols at the urban background when compared with the harbour site. Our hypothesis points to the fast formation of secondary ammonium sulphate within the city, after the reaction of SO 2 /H 2 SO 4 transported by sea breezes with NH 3 , which is emitted in large amounts in Barcelona; and also to the enhanced formation of secondary organic aerosols within the city. This study broadens our knowledge on atmospheric phenomenology in urban Mediterranean cities and claims for effective abatement strategies focused on maritime practises, in agreement with the driving axis of the APICE project. BACKGROUND: A few studies have reported associations between traffic-related air pollution exposure at schools and cognitive development. The role of PM components or sources other than traffic on cognitive development has been little explored. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to explore the role of PM sources in school air on cognitive development. METHODS: A cohort of 2,618 schoolchildren (average age, 8.5 years) belonging to 39 schools in Barcelona (Spain) was followed up for a year. Children completed computerized tests assessing working memory, superior working memory, and inattentiveness during four visits. Particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM[sub 2.5]) was measured during two 1-week campaigns in each school, both outdoors and in the classroom. Source apportionment resulted in nine sources: mineral, organic/textile/chalk, traffic, secondary sulfate and organics, secondary nitrate, road dust, metallurgy, sea spray, and heavy oil combustion. Differences in cognitive growth trajectories were assessed with mixed models with age-by-source interaction terms. RESULTS: An interquartile range increase in indoor traffic-related PM2 5 was associated with reductions in cognitive growth equivalent to 22% (95% CI: 2%, 42%) of the annual change in working memory, 30% (95% CI: 6%, 54%) of the annual change in superior working memory, and 11% (95% CI: 0%, 22%) of the annual change in the inattentiveness scale. None of the other PM[sub 2.5] sources was associated with adverse effects on cognitive development. CONCLUSIONS: Traffic was the only source of fine particles associated with a reduction in cognitive development. Reducing air pollution from traffic at primary schools may result in beneficial effects on cognition. The coals from the Jungar Coalfield, Inner Mongolia, China, have been found to be enriched in Ga and Li. These are valuable metals that are potentially recoverable from coals and/or coal combustion residues. Based on fifteen roof/floor/parting samples collected from one borehole and one hundred and forty one bulk coal samples collected from three boreholes in the Buertaohai-Tianjiashipan coal mining district, Jungar Coalfield, this paper reports new data on the mineral compositions and geochemical characteristics of the Jungar Li-Ga-rich coals, and provides new evidence for the origin and mode of occurrence of Al, Ga and Li in these coals. The main mineral phases occurring in the coals are kaolinite, boehmite, calcite, with small proportions of quartz, pyrite, ankerite, siderite, and trace amounts of microcline and rectorite. An unusual mineral phase, svanbergite (SrAl 3 (PO 4 )(SO 4 )(OH) 6 ) also occurs as a main mineral constituent in the studied coals. The mineral phases in the roof/floor/parting samples are dominantly kaolinite, with a small proportion of quartz. Kaolinite is of both terrigenous and authigenic origin, which were possibly derived from terrigenous Yinshan Oldland sediment-source region and/or from recrystallization during the coal formation process. Boehmite and svanbergite are primarily of authigenic origin, and were dominantly derived from the weathered bauxite sediment-source region. Calcite may have formed by dissolution of limestone layers close to the margin of coal basin and subsequent deposition of the Ca or Mg-rich carbonates in the cells/fractures of the coal seams. Sulfide minerals in fractures may have been precipitated from epithermal fluids. Rectorite was probably formed by the reaction of kaolinite with epigenetic low-temperature hydrothermal fluids during diagenesis. Compared to common Chinese and worldwide coals, the studied Jungar coals are much more enriched in Al (4.4–6.1%), Li (70–79 mg/kg), and Ga (14–19 mg/kg). Titanium, P, Sr, Zr, Nb, Th, Ta, Hf, and rare earth elements (REEs) are also enriched in the studied coals to some extent. Aluminum in the coals mainly occurs in the form of kaolinite and boehmite, whereas, lithium may be associated with aluminosilicate minerals (kaolinite and illite if present) as well as svanbergite. Gallium principally occurs in kaolinite, and to a lesser extent, svanbergite. Strontium, P, and LREEs (La, Ce, and Rr, Nd and Sm) mainly present in svanbergite. Human civilization is currently facing two particular challenges: population growth with a strong trend towards urbanization and climate change. The latter is now no longer seriously questioned. The primary concern is to limit anthropogenic climate change and to adapt our societies to its effects. Schools are a key part of the structure of our societies. If future generations are to take control of the manifold global problems, we have to offer our children the best possible infrastructure for their education: not only in terms of the didactic concepts, but also with regard to the climatic conditions in the school environment. Between the ages of 6 and 19, children spend up to 8 h a day in classrooms. The conditions are, however, often inacceptable and regardless of the geographic situation, all the current studies report similar problems: classrooms being too small for the high number of school children, poor ventilation concepts, considerable outdoor air pollution and strong sources of indoor air pollution. There have been discussions about a beneficial and healthy air quality in classrooms for many years now and in recent years extensive studies have been carried out worldwide. The problems have been clearly outlined on a scientific level and there are prudent and feasible concepts to improve the situation. The growing number of publications also highlights the importance of this subject. High carbon dioxide concentrations in classrooms, which indicate poor ventilation conditions, and the increasing particle matter in urban outdoor air have, in particular, been identified as primary causes of poor indoor air quality in schools. Despite this, the conditions in most schools continue to be in need of improvement. There are many reasons for this. In some cases, the local administrative bodies do not have the budgets required to address such concerns, in other cases regulations and laws stand in contradiction to the demands for better indoor air quality, and sometimes the problems are simply ignored. This review summarizes the current results and knowledge gained from the scientific literature on air quality in classrooms. Possible scenarios for the future are discussed and guideline values proposed which can serve to help authorities, government organizations and commissions improve the situation on a global level. PM 2.5 aerosol samples were collected from January 2013 to January 2014 on the kerbside of a major arterial route in the city of Oporto, Portugal, and later analyzed for carbonaceous fractions and water soluble ions. The average concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in the aerosol were 6.2 μg/m 3 , 5.0 μg/m 3 and 3.8 μg/m 3 , respectively, and fit within the range of values that have been observed close to major roads in Europe, Asia and North America. On average, carbonaceous matter accounted for 56% of the gravimetrically measured PM 2.5 mass. The three carbon fractions exhibited a similar seasonal variation, with high concentrations in late autumn and in winter, and low concentrations in spring. SO 4 2 − was the dominant water soluble ion, followed by NO 3 − , NH 4 + , Cl − , Na + , K + , oxalate, Ca 2 + , Mg 2 + , formate, methanesulfonate and acetate. Some of these ions exhibited a clear seasonal trend during the study period. The average OC/EC ratio for the entire set of samples was 1.28 ± 0.61, which was consistent with a significant influence of vehicle exhaust emissions on aerosol composition. On the other hand, the average WSOC/OC ratio was 0.67 ± 0.23, reflecting the influence of other emitting sources. WSOC was highly correlated with nssK + , a tracer of biomass combustion, and was not correlated with nssSO 4 2 − , a species associated with secondary processes, suggesting that the main source of WSOC was biomass burning. Most of the SO 4 2 − was anthropogenic in origin and was closely associated with NH 4 + , pointing to the formation of secondary aerosols. Na + , Cl − and methanesulfonate were clearly associated with marine sources while NO 3 − was related with combustion of both fossil and non-fossil fuels. This paper represents the first integrated research on the mineralogical, geochemical and stable isotope characteristics of the Upper Triassic high‑sulfur coals from the Khanh Hoa open-pit mine, Thai Nguyen Coalfield, NE Vietnam. Formed in a marine-influenced carbonate succession, the Khanh Hoa coal is characterized by medium ash yield, low volatile matter yield, and high sulfur content. Minerals in the Khanh Hoa coal are predominantly composed of authigenic calcite in the upper portion; and pyrite, quartz, with minor amounts of tobelite ([(NH 4), K] (Si, Al) 4 Al 2 O 10 (OH) 2), gypsum in the middle and lower portions. The high‑sulfur Khanh Hoa coal is enriched in an As-Mo-Sb-U-Cs-P assemblage, which presents both an organic and inorganic mode of occurrence, and is largely ascribed to hydrothermal fluids. The δ 13C values of the Khanh Hoa coal range from −24.77‰ to −22.80‰ (avg. −23.33‰), reflecting a change in sedimentation pattern (from transgressive to high stand system upwards). The δ 15N values of the Khanh Hoa coal range from 2.41‰ to 3.73‰ (avg. 3.30‰), possibly resulted from influenced by seawater influence and a redox environment. The mineralogical, geochemical and isotopic characteristics reflected that the high‑sulfur Khanh Hoa coal was formed/preserved in marine-influenced anoxic environment, with low detrital input, and strong activities of multi-stage hydrothermal solutions. Introduction Children are more vulnerable to the effects of environmental elements. A variety of air pollutants are among the identified factors causing neural damage at toxic concentrations. It is not obvious, however, to what extent the tolerated high levels of air pollutants are able to alter brain development. We have specifically investigated the neurotoxic effects of airborne copper exposure in school environments. Methods Speed and consistency of motor response were assessed in 2836 children aged from 8 to 12 years. Anatomical MRI, diffusion tensor imaging, and functional MRI were used to directly test the brain repercussions in a subgroup of 263 children. Results Higher copper exposure was associated with poorer motor performance and altered structure of the basal ganglia. Specifically, the architecture of the caudate nucleus region was less complete in terms of both tissue composition and neural track water diffusion. Functional MRI consistently showed a reciprocal connectivity reduction between the caudate nucleus and the frontal cortex . Air quality in nine National Parks in mainland Spain was assessed analysing SO 2 , NO x , O 3 , PM 10 and PM 2.5 data from background stations. As emissions in and around parks are limited, the levels of primary pollutants are low. Concentrations of secondary pollutants are high especially in summer due to photochemical production. The geographical variability of pollutants responds to regional emission patterns and the dominant circulation regimes in different regions resulting in west-east gradients for O 3 and PM . Seasonal variability of pollutants was also interpreted in virtue of transport scenarios, changes in photochemical activity and emissions variability. NO x and SO 2 , maximize in winter due to higher emissions while O 3 and PM do it in summer due to photochemical production, lower precipitation and, in the case of PM , the occurrence of African dust outbreaks. Water spraying and/or chemical suppressants such as salts and polymers have been suggested to reduce road dust resuspension due to their capability to increase adhesion, and therefore the effective size and weight of particles, but contrasting results have been obtained so further testing are needed. This study presents the first results of street washing and Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA) efficiencies at two industrial roads (paved and unpaved) in the Mediterranean region where the high solar radiation, warm climate, and scarce precipitation, may play a key role in determining the efficiency of mitigation techniques Results show that, at both sites, street washing (water only) was more effective than CMA. Street washing made observe 18% (daily basis) and >90% (first hour) reductions of kerbside PM10 concentrations for the paved and unpaved road respectively, while with CMA PM10 decrease was generally lower and with less statistical significance. Children are more vulnerable to the effects of environmental elements due to their active developmental processes. Exposure to urban air pollution has been associated with poorer cognitive performance, which is thought to be a result of direct interference with brain maturation. We aimed to assess the extent of such potential effects of urban pollution on child brain maturation using general indicators of vehicle exhaust measured in the school environment and a comprehensive imaging evaluation. A group of 263 children, aged 8 to 12 years, underwent MRI to quantify regional brain volumes, tissue composition, myelination, cortical thickness, neural tract architecture, membrane metabolites, functional connectivity in major neural networks and activation/deactivation dynamics during a sensory task. A combined measurement of elemental carbon and NO 2 was used as a putative marker of vehicle exhaust. Air pollution exposure was associated with brain changes of a functional nature, with no evident effect on brain anatomy, structure or membrane metabolites. Specifically, a higher content of pollutants was associated with lower functional integration and segregation in key brain networks relevant to both inner mental processes (the default mode network) and stimulus-driven mental operations. Age and performance (motor response speed) both showed the opposite effect to that of pollution, thus indicating that higher exposure is associated with slower brain maturation. Sampling campaigns using the same equipment and methodology were conducted to assess and compare the air quality at three South European subway systems (Barcelona, Athens and Oporto), focusing on concentrations and chemical composition of PM 2.5 on subway platforms, as well as PM 2.5 concentrations inside trains. Experimental results showed that the mean PM 2.5 concentrations widely varied among the European subway systems, and even among different platforms within the same underground system, which might be associated to distinct station and tunnel designs and ventilation systems. In all cases PM 2.5 concentrations on the platforms were higher than those in the urban ambient air, evidencing that there is generation of PM 2.5 associated with the subway systems operation. Subway PM 2.5 consisted of elemental iron, total carbon, crustal matter, secondary inorganic compounds, insoluble sulphate, halite and trace elements. Of all metals, Fe was the most abundant, accounting for 29–43% of the total PM 2.5 mass (41–61% if Fe 2 O 3 is considered), indicating the existence of an Fe source in the subway system, which could have its origin in mechanical friction and wear processes between rails, wheels and brakes. The trace elements with the highest enrichment in the subway PM 2.5 were Ba, Cu, Mn, Zn, Cr, Sb, Sr, Ni, Sn, Co, Zr and Mo. Similar PM 2.5 diurnal trends were observed on platforms from different subway systems, with higher concentrations during subway operating hours than during the transport service interruption, and lower levels on weekends than on weekdays. PM 2.5 concentrations depended largely on the operation and frequency of the trains and the ventilation system, and were lower inside the trains, when air conditioning system was operating properly, than on the platforms. However, the PM 2.5 concentrations increased considerably when the train windows were open. The PM 2.5 levels inside the trains decreased with the trains passage in aboveground sections. BACKGROUND: The available evidence of the effects of air pollution and noise on behavioral development is limited, and it overlooks exposure at schools, where children spend a considerable amount of time. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the associations of exposure to traffic-related air pollutants (TRAPs) and noise at school on behavioral development of schoolchildren. METHODS: We evaluated children 7-11 years of age in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) during 2012-2013 within the BREATHE project. Indoor and outdoor concentrations of elemental carbon (EC), black carbon (BC), and nitrogen dioxide (NO[sub 2]) were measured at schools in two separate 1-week campaigns. In one campaign we also measured noise levels inside classrooms. Parents filled out the strengths and difficulties questionnaire (SDQ) to assess child behavioral development, while teachers completed the attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder criteria of the DSM-IV (ADHD-DSM-IV) list to assess specific ADHD symptomatology. Negative binomial mixed-effects models were used to estimate associations between the exposures and behavioral development scores. RESULTS: Interquartile range (IQR) increases in indoor and outdoor EC, BC, and NO2 concentrations were positively associated with SDQ total difficulties scores (suggesting more frequent behavioral problems) in adjusted multivariate models, whereas noise was significantly associated with ADHD-DSM-IV scores. CONCLUSION: In our study population of 7- to 11-year-old children residing in Barcelona, exposure to TRAPs at school was associated with increased behavioral problems in schoolchildren. BACKGROUND: Evidence on the association between short-term exposure to desert dust and health outcomes is controversial. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to estimate the short-term effects of particulate matter < 10 µm (PM10) on mortality and hospital admissions in 13 Southern European cities, distinguishing between PM10 originating from the desert and from other sources. METHODS: We identified desert dust advection days in multiple Mediterranean areas for 2001--2010 by combining modeling tools, back-trajectories, and satellite data. For each advection day, we estimated PM10 concentrations originating from desert, and computed PM10 from other sources by difference. We fitted city-specific Poisson regression models to estimate the association between PM from different sources (desert and non-desert) and daily mortality and emergency hospitalizations. Finally, we pooled city-specific results in a random-effects meta-analysis. RESULTS: On average, 15% of days were affected by desert dust at ground level (desert PM10 > 0 µg/m³). Most episodes occurred in spring--summer, with increasing gradient of both frequency and intensity north--south and west-east of the Mediterranean basin. We found significant associations of both PM10 concentrations with mortality. Increases of 10 µg/m³ in non-desert and desert PM10 (lag 0--1 days) were associated with increases in natural mortality of 0.55% (95% CI: 0.24, 0.87%) and 0.65% (95% CI: 0.24, 1.06%), respectively. Similar associations were estimated for cardio-respiratory mortality and hospital admissions. CONCLUSIONS: PM10 originating from the desert was positively associated with mortality and hospitalizations in Southern Europe. Ambient ultrafine particle number concentrations (PNC) have inhomogeneous spatio-temporal distributions and depend on a number of different urban factors, including background conditions and distant sources. This paper quantitatively compares exposure to ambient ultrafine particles at urban schools in two cities in developed countries, with high insolation climatic conditions, namely Brisbane (Australia) and Barcelona (Spain). The analysis used comprehensive indoor and outdoor air quality measurements at 25 schools in Brisbane and 39 schools in Barcelona. PNC modes were analysed with respect to ambient temperature, land use and urban characteristics, combined with the measured elemental carbon concentrations, NO x (Brisbane) and NO 2 (Barcelona). The trends and modes of the quantified weekday average daily cycles of ambient PNC exhibited significant differences between the two cities. PNC increases were observed during traffic rush hours in both cases. However, the mid-day peak was dominant in Brisbane schools and had the highest contribution to total PNC for both indoors and outdoors. In Barcelona, the contribution from traffic was highest for ambient PNC, while the mid-day peak had a slightly higher contribution for indoor concentrations. Analysis of the relationships between PNC and land use characteristics in Barcelona schools showed a moderate correlation with the percentage of road network area and an anti-correlation with the percentage of green area. No statistically significant correlations were found for Brisbane. Overall, despite many similarities between the two cities, school-based exposure patterns were different. The main source of ambient PNC at schools was shown to be traffic in Barcelona and mid-day new particle formation in Brisbane. The mid-day PNC peak in Brisbane could have been driven by the combined effect of background and meteorological conditions, as well as other local/distant sources. The work presented here reports the first study in which the speciation, behaviour and fate of mercury (Hg) have been evaluated under oxy-fuel combustion at the largest oxy-Pulverised Coal Combustion (oxy-PCC) demonstration plant to date during routine operating conditions and partial exhaust flue gas re-circulation to the boiler. The effect of the CO 2 -rich flue gas re-circulation on Hg has also been evaluated. Results reveal that oxy-PCC operational conditions play a significant role on Hg partitioning and fate because of the continuous CO 2 -rich flue gas re-circulations to the boiler. Mercury escapes from the cyclone in a gaseous form as Hg 2+ (68%) and it is the prevalent form in the CO 2 -rich exhaust flue gas (99%) with lower proportions of Hg 0 (1.3%). The overall retention rate for gaseous Hg is around 12%; Hg 0 is more prone to be retained (95%) while Hg 2+ shows a negative efficiency capture for the whole installation. The negative Hg 2+ capture efficiencies are due to the continuous CO 2 -rich exhaust flue gas recirculation to the boiler with enhanced Hg contents. Calculations revealed that 44 mg of Hg were re-circulated to the boiler as a result of 2183 re-circulations of CO 2 -rich flue gas. Road dust emission is an emerging issue in air quality due to the lack of remediation measures in contrast to vehicle exhaust emissions. The evidence of receptor modeling studies allows for quantifying impact on a few receptors, but the high cost of PM chemical speciation data and the questionable representativeness of single monitoring sites, limit considerably the development of population exposure estimates and epidemiologic studies based on georeferenced data. This study attempts to initiate and promote urban-scale dispersion modeling for road dust emissions, which will allow for a more robust estimate of population exposure and health outcomes. The TNO URBIS (URBan Information System) model was applied in the city of Barcelona, implementing a Gaussian line source and a street canyon dispersion model, together with new experimental estimates of road dust emission factors and algorithm to describe the time variability. Annual, daily and hourly road dust contributions were simulated and validated against observation of PM10, mineral dust and hourly PM2.5-10 concentrations. Results show that road dust contributed 9–15% to PM10 levels at background sites, and 23–44% at traffic sites. Highest contributions were modeled in the commercial/residential district where most of population live and work (Eixample) structured by 120 m wide square blocks, separated by roads with >10,000 vehicles per day. Street level contributions rise up to 20 μ g/m 3 (96% of roads) and an additional 3% of roads within 20–40 μ g/m 3 . Hourly simulations of road dust contributions revealed to benefit from the implementation of the new emission module ( Amato et al., 2012 ), able to describe the exponential recovery of road dust emission potential after rain events, when compared to common approach such as the use of constant emission factor or an ON/OFF approach. Correlation coefficients with observed data varied from 0.61, 0.58 and 0.43 for annual, daily and hourly means, respectively, revealing a clear improvement in terms of both spatial and temporal variability. However, more efforts need to be done in validating the model in different climatic scenarios and evaluating the seasonal variation of road dust emissions, due to droughts or Saharan dust events. This paper investigates the mineralogical and geochemical compositions of the Late Permian coals in the Liulong Mine, Liuzhi Coalfield, Western Guizhou Province, China, by using XRD, SEM-EDX, ICP-AES and ICP-MS. Both the No.3 and No.7 Coals are classified as low volatile bituminous coal. However, the No.3 Coal is a medium-ash (29.8% on average) and high-sulfur (4.76% on average) coal while the No.7 Coal is a low-ash (12.4% on average) and medium-sulfur (2.16% on average) coal. Major minerals in both coal seams include quartz, pyrite, marcasite, kaolinite, calcite, and to a lesser extent, gypsum and anatase. Illite, chlorite, rectorite, albite, ankerite and siderotil are only present in the No.3 Coal. The No.3 Coal contains higher elemental concentrations than the No.7 Coal probably due to the higher mineral contents in the No.3 Coal, and is enriched in Nb and Ta, and to a lesser extent in K, Ti, Li, V, Co, Cu, Sr, Zr, Mo and Ba. The mineralogical and geochemical data presented in this study have shown that the No.3 Coal was formed under a higher degree of marine-influenced coal-forming environment than the No.7 Coal. However, the both Coals have the Kangdian Upland (made of mafic igneous rocks, such as basalt rocks) as sediment-source region like other coals from Guizhou Province. Three geological factors control the geochemical patterns of the No.3 and No.7 Coals, namely: (1) the high detrital input in the No.3 Coal causing high ash yields; (2) the sediment-source region (Kangdian Upland basalt) causing high Ti, Nb and Ta contents, and a minor proportion of Co, Cr, V and Cu, when combined with the high detrital input in the No.3 Coal; (3) the higher degree of marine influenced depositional environment in the No.3 Coal causing a high S, Sr and Ba contents. Coal power plants are producing huge amounts of coal ash that may be applied to a variety of secondary uses. Class F fly ash may act as an excellent scrubber and fixation reagent for highly acidic wastes, which might also contain several toxic trace elements. This paper evaluates the potential of using Class F fly ashes (<20% CaO), in combination with excessive fines from the limestone quarry industry as a fixation reagent. The analysis included leaching experiments (EN12457-2) and several analytical techniques (ICP, SEM, XRD, etc.), which were used in order to investigate the fixation procedure. Conventional subway systems are characterized by high particulate matter (PM) concentrations. To relate PM exposure to adverse health effects it is important to determine the dose of the inhaled particles in the human respiratory tract (HRT). Therefore, the total and regional doses of particles for a healthy adult male using the dosimetry model ExDoM in the subway system were estimated. The overall dose was determined using the average exposure PM 2.5 concentrations obtained from an extensive campaign in the Barcelona subway system, including measurements on the platforms and inside the trains. Despite the lower PM 2.5 concentrations inside the trains with respect to those on station platforms, the highest dose was observed inside the trains due to longer exposure time, evidencing the importance of the exposure period in the estimation of the particle dose. Overall, during a subway commuting travel, roughly 80% of the inhaled mass of subway PM 2.5 was deposited in the HRT. The highest amount of the inhaled particles was deposited in the extrathoracic region (68%), whereas the deposition was much smaller in the tracheobronchial tree (4%) and alveolar–interstitial region (10%). Individual's daily exposure to PM 2.5 and dose were estimated, considering a typical time-activity pattern of an adult male who lives in Barcelona and commutes by subway. While a subject typically spends approx. 3% of the day in the subway system, this microenvironment may account for up to 47% of the total PM 2.5 daily dose. These results might be similarly high for other commuting modes due to the reported high PM exposure levels. The dose is mainly dependent on the particle size and exposure concentrations. In recent years monitoring the presence of psychotropic compounds in wastewater has been proposed as a tool to estimate community drug use. Measurement of drugs of abuse (DAs) in airborne particulate is currently being explored as an additional tool to evaluate drug use patterns in time and space, and identify potential emission sources. In this study, we comprehensively monitor the occurrence of 22 licit and illicit DAs and transformation products, belonging to 6 different chemical groups, in airborne particulate matter (PM10) in the city of Barcelona. In order to study spatial and temporal variations, samples were collected from 12 different selected locations on one weekday (Wednesday) and one weekend day (Saturday), during five consecutive weeks. A previously developed analytical methodology, based on pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) followed by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) determination, was adapted for analysis of the target compounds with satisfactory performance, ensuring reliability of results. Among the investigated compounds, cannabinol (CBN), cocaine (COC), and methamphetamine (MA) were found to be the most ubiquitous and abundant compounds in PM10 with concentrations ranging from 0.7 pg/m 3 (MA) to 6020 pg/m 3 (CBN). Significant differences in total DA concentrations in PM10 were observed across sampling days and locations. DA emissions were identified in highly densely populated areas, where popular commercial and nightlife zones are located. Psychoactive effects due to inhalation of measured concentrations are probably negligible; however, potential health effects due to chronic exposure have not been explored yet. Access to detailed comparisons in air quality variations encountered when commuting through a city offers the urban traveller more informed choice on how to minimise personal exposure to inhalable pollutants. In this study we report on an experiment designed to compare atmospheric contaminants inhaled during bus, subway train, tram and walking journeys through the city of Barcelona. Average number concentrations of particles 10-300 nm in size, N , are lowest in the commute using subway trains ( N <2.5×10 4 part. cm −3 ), higher during tram travel and suburban walking (2.5×10 4 cm −3 < N <5.0×10 4 cm −3 ), and highest in diesel bus or walking in the city centre ( N >5.0×10 4 cm −3 ), with extreme transient peaks at busy traffic crossings commonly exceeding 1.0×10 5 cm −3 and accompanied by peaks in Black Carbon and CO. Subway particles are coarser (mode 90 nm) than in buses, trams or outdoors (<70 nm), and concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) and Black Carbon are lower in the tram when compared to both bus and subway. CO 2 levels in public transport reflect passenger numbers, more than tripling from outdoor levels to >1200 ppm in crowded buses and trains. There are also striking differences in inhalable particle chemistry depending on the route chosen, ranging from aluminosiliceous at roadsides and near pavement works, ferruginous with enhanced Mn, Co, Zn, Sr and Ba in the subway environment, and higher levels of Sb and Cu inside the bus. We graphically display such chemical variations using a ternary diagram to emphasise how “air quality” in the city involves a consideration of both physical and chemical parameters, and is not simply a question of measuring particle number or mass. The present study investigates the geochemical characteristics of the flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FGD Gp) generated from a pulverized-coal combustion (PCC) power plant in Xinjiang, Northwest China, with special emphasis on manufacturing fire-resistant panels using this FGD Gp as well as the fly ash collected from the same power plant. The physical, mechanical and insulating properties of the manufactured panels are also determined. The FGD Gp is characterized by low trace element concentration and low leachable potential for environment-concerned trace elements, indicating it can be reused with low environmental implication. Fire-resistant panels were successfully made from pure FGD Gp, pure commercial gypsum (CGp) and different FGD Gp/fly ash and CGp/fly ash mixtures. With the same gypsum/fly ash proportion, the FGD Gp/fly ash panels present relatively lower density, lower water absorption and lower mechanical strength, but higher moisture contents and better insulating capacities than the CGp/fly ash panels. The pure FGD Gp panel presents the best insulating capacity (52 min), much higher than that of the pure CGp panel (42.8 min). The mechanical and insulating properties of the panels are reduced with the increasing of fly ash proportion in the mixtures, but even prepared with 80% fly ash, the manufactured panels can still be used as benign fire-resistant panels with no significantly physico-chemical, and mechanical limitations. Therefore, manufacture of fire-resistant panels from FGD-Gp and fly ash is a very promising application for these coal combustion by-products which are substantially being generated in large amounts from Xinjiang power plants. The manufactured fire-resistant panels can be used in large amount as insulating construction and building materials with low environmental implication and high economic value. Legislation controlling vehicle emissions has been credited with a general downward trend in NO x (NO 2 +NO) concentrations in Europe since the 1990's. However, recent studies suggest that traffic (roadside) (TR) NO 2 concentrations have not decreased as expected, and in some cases increased, most likely due to the use of oxidation catalysts and particle filters in diesel vehicles (EURO III, IV, V, VI). In this study we describe the time trends in NO x , NO 2 and NO concentrations in 9 European cities comparing TR and urban background (UB) monitoring locations. In each city, we collected hourly city-specific NO x , NO, and NO 2 data from one TR and one UB monitoring site for each year. We describe hourly, weekly, seasonal and inter-annual patterns for periods corresponding to the implementation dates of various EURO vehicle emission standards regulating NO x emissions. The diurnal patterns in all 9 cities strongly reflected morning and evening traffic. In addition, lower weekend concentrations were observed. The NO x concentrations from the TR sites remain unchanged in the majority of the cities over the study period. When stratified by 3 time periods according to the implementation of the EURO standards, an increasing NO 2 /NO x ratio in 7/9 cities with time was noted. However, over the same time period the NO/NO 2 ratio decreased in 8/9 cities. A permanent inversion of the NO/NO 2 ratio was observed to occur in 2003 in 5/9 cities. Our analyses of temporal and diurnal patterns of NO x in European cities show reductions in concentrations consistent with reductions in primary emissions likely arising from the implementation of successive EURO standards. The generally constant or increasing NO 2 concentrations in the majority of the cities assessed over the study period underline the need of further regulative measures to meet the air quality standards and consequently to minimise adverse effects on human health. The spatial distribution of PM1 components in the Barcelona metropolitan area was investigated using on-road mobile measurements of atmospheric particle- and gas-phase compounds during the DAURE campaign in March 2009. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) applied to organic aerosol (OA) data yielded 5 factors: hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA), cooking OA (COA), biomass burning OA (BBOA), and low volatility and semivolatile oxygenated OA (LV-OOA and SV-OOA). The area under investigation (~500 km²) was divided into six zones (city center, harbor, industrial area, precoastal depression, 2 mountain ranges) for measurements and data analysis. Mean zonal OA concentrations are 4.9-9.5 µg m-3. The area is heavily impacted by local primary emissions (HOA 14-38%, COA 10-18%, BBOA 10-12% of OA); concentrations of traffic-related components, especially black carbon, are biased high due to the on-road nature of the measurements. The formation of secondary OA adds more than half of the OA burden outside the city center (SV-OOA 14-40%, LV-OOA 17-42% of OA). A case study of one measurement drive from the shore to the precoastal mountain range furthest downwind of the city center indicates the importance of nonfossil over anthropogenic secondary OA based on OA/CO. Greenness has been reported to improve mental and physical health. Reduction in exposure to air pollution has been suggested to underlie the health benefits of greenness; however, the available evidence on the mitigating effect of greenness on air pollution remains limited and inconsistent. We investigated the association between greenness within and surrounding school boundaries and monitored indoor and outdoor levels of traffic-related air pollutants (TRAPs) including NO 2 , ultrafine particles, black carbon, and traffic-related PM 2.5 at 39 schools across Barcelona, Spain, in 2012. TRAP levels at schools were measured twice during two one-week campaigns separated by 6 months. Greenness within and surrounding school boundaries was measured as the average of satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) within boundaries of school and a 50 m buffer around the school, respectively. Mixed effects models were used to quantify the associations between school greenness and TRAP levels, adjusted for relevant covariates. Higher greenness within and surrounding school boundaries was consistently associated with lower indoor and outdoor TRAP levels. Reduction in indoor TRAP levels was partly mediated by the reduction in outdoor TRAP levels. We also observed some suggestions for stronger associations between school surrounding greenness and outdoor TRAP levels for schools with higher number of trees around them. Our observed reduction of TRAP levels at schools associated with school greenness can be of public importance, considering the burden of health effects of exposure to TRAPs in schoolchildren. Exposure to green space has been associated with better physical and mental health. Although this exposure could also influence cognitive development in children, available epidemiological evidence on such an impact is scarce. This study aimed to assess the association between exposure to green space and measures of cognitive development in primary school children. This study was based on 2,593 school children in the second to fourth grades (7-10 y) of 36 primary schools in Barcelona, Spain (2012-2013). Cognitive development was assessed as 12-mo change in developmental trajectory of working memory, superior working memory, and inattentiveness by using four repeated (every 3 mo) computerized cognitive tests for each outcome. We assessed exposure to green space by characterizing outdoor surrounding greenness at home and school and during commuting by using high-resolution (5 m × 5 m) satellite data on greenness (normalized difference vegetation index). Multilevel modeling was used to estimate the associations between green spaces and cognitive development. We observed an enhanced 12-mo progress in working memory and superior working memory and a greater 12-mo reduction in inattentiveness associated with greenness within and surrounding school boundaries and with total surrounding greenness index (including greenness surrounding home, commuting route, and school). Adding a traffic-related air pollutant (elemental carbon) to models explained 20-65% of our estimated associations between school greenness and 12-mo cognitive development. Our study showed a beneficial association between exposure to green space and cognitive development among school children that was partly mediated by reduction in exposure to air pollution. Ultrafine particles are characterized by a high surface area per mass. Particle surface has been reported to play a significant role in determining the toxicological activity of ultrafine particles. In light of this potential role, the time variation of lung deposited surface area (LDSA) concentrations in the alveolar region was studied at the urban background environment of Barcelona (Spain), aiming to asses which processes and sources govern this parameter. Simultaneous data on Black Carbon (BC), total particle number (N) and particle number size distribution were correlated with LDSA. Average LDSA concentrations in Barcelona were 37 ± 26 μm 2 cm − 3 , levels which seem to be characteristic for urban environments under traffic influence across Europe. Results confirm the comparability between LDSA data provided by the online monitor and those calculated based on particle size distributions (by SMPS), and reveal that LDSA concentrations are mainly influenced by particles in the size range 50–200 nm. A set of representative daily cycles for LDSA concentrations was obtained by means of a k -means cluster technique. The contribution of traffic emissions to daily patterns was evidenced in all the clusters, but was quantitatively different. Traffic events under stable atmospheric conditions increased mean hourly background LDSA concentrations up to 6 times, attaining levels higher than 200 μm 2 cm − 3 . However, under warm and relatively clean atmospheric conditions, the traffic rush hour contribution to the daily LDSA mean appeared to be lower and the contribution of new urban particle formation events (by photochemically induced nucleation) was detected. These nucleation events were calculated to increase average background LDSA concentrations by 15–35% (maximum LDSA levels = 45–50 μm 2 cm − 3 ). Thereby, it may be concluded that in the urban background of Barcelona road traffic is the main source increasing the aerosol surface area which can deposit on critical regions of the human lung, followed by nucleation episodes. While production and use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is increasing, workers exposure to CNTs is expected to increase as well, with inhalation being potentially the main pathway for uptake. However, there have been few studies reporting results about workers' personal exposure to CNTs. In this study, worker exposure to single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) during the production of conductive films in a modern up-scaling factory was assessed. Particulate matter concentrations (2.5-10 μm) and concentrations of CO and CO2 were monitored by using real-time instruments. Workers' exposure levels to SWCNTs were qualitatively estimated by analyzing particle samples by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM samples identified high aspect ratio (length/width > 500) SWCNTs in workplace air. SWCNT concentrations estimated from micrographs varied during normal operation, reactor use without local exhaust ventilation (LEV), and cleaning between 1.7 × 10−3, 5.6 and 6.0 × 10−3 SWCNT cm−3, respectively. However, during cleaning it was unclear whether the SWCNTs originated from the cleaning itself or from other reactor openings. We were unable to quantify the SWCNT emissions with online particle instrumentation due to the SWCNT low concentrations compared to background particle concentrations, which were on average 2.6 ± 1.1 × 103cm−3. However, CO concentrations were verified as a good indicator of fugitive emissions of SWCNTs. During normal operation, exposure levels were well below proposed limit values (1.0 × 10−2 fibers cm−3 and 1 μg m−3) when LEV was used. Experimental and geochemical modelling studies were carried out to identify mineral and solid phases containing major, minor, and trace elements and the mechanism of the retention of these elements in Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD)-gypsum samples from a coal-fired power plant under filtered water recirculation to the scrubber and forced oxidation conditions. The role of the pH and related environmental factors on the mobility of Li, Ni, Zn, As, Se, Mo, and U from FGD-gypsums for a comprehensive assessment of element leaching behaviour were also carried out. Results show that the extraction rate of the studied elements generally increases with decreasing the pH value of the FGD-gypsum leachates. The increase of the mobility of elements such as U, Se, and As in the FGD-gypsum entails the modification of their aqueous speciation in the leachates; UO2SO4, H2Se, and HAsO2 are the aqueous complexes with the highest activities under acidic conditions. The speciation of Zn, Li, and Ni is not affected in spite of pH changes; these elements occur as free cations and associated to SO4² in the FGD-gypsum leachates. The mobility of Cu and Mo decreases by decreasing the pH of the FGD-gypsum leachates, which might be associated to the precipitation of CuSe2 and MoSe2, respectively. Time-of-Flight mass spectrometry of the solid phase combined with geochemical modelling of the aqueous phase has proved useful in understanding the mobility and geochemical behaviour of elements and their partitioning into FGD-gypsum samples. The Barcelona subway system comprises eight subway lines, at different depths, with different tunnel dimensions, station designs and train frequencies. An extensive measurement campaign was performed in this subway system in order to characterise the airborne particulate matter (PM) measuring its concentration and investigating its variability, both inside trains and on platforms, in two different seasonal periods (warmer and colder), to better understand the main factors controlling it, and therefore the way to improve air quality. The majority of PM in the underground stations is generated within the subway system, due to abrasion and wear of rail tracks, wheels and braking pads caused during the motion of the trains. Substantial variation in average PM concentrations between underground stations was observed, which might be associated to different ventilation and air conditioning systems, characteristics/design of each station and variations in the train frequency. Average PM 2.5 concentrations on the platforms in the subway operating hours ranged from 20 to 51 and from 41 to 91 μg m − 3 in the warmer and colder period, respectively, mainly related to the seasonal changes in the subway ventilation systems. The new subway lines with platform screen doors showed PM 2.5 concentrations lower than those in the conventional system, which is probably attributable not only to the more advanced ventilation setup, but also to the lower train frequency and the design of the stations. PM concentrations inside the trains were generally lower than those on the platforms, which is attributable to the air conditioning systems operating inside the trains, which are equipped with air filters. This study allows the analysis and quantification of the impact of different ventilation settings on air quality, which provides an improvement on the knowledge for the general understanding and good management of air quality in the subway system. Background: Air pollution is a suspected developmental neurotoxicant. Many schools are located in close proximity to busy roads, and traffic air pollution peaks when children are at school. We aimed to assess whether exposure of children in primary school to traffic-related air pollutants is associated with impaired cognitive development. Methods and Findings: We conducted a prospective study of children (n = 2,715, aged 7 to 10 y) from 39 schools in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) exposed to high and low traffic-related air pollution, paired by school socioeconomic index; children were tested four times (i.e., to assess the 12-mo developmental trajectories) via computerized tests (n = 10,112). Chronic traffic air pollution (elemental carbon [EC], nitrogen dioxide [NO2], and ultrafine particle number [UFP; 10–700 nm]) was measured twice during 1-wk campaigns both in the courtyard (outdoor) and inside the classroom (indoor) simultaneously in each school pair. Cognitive development was assessed with the n-back and the attentional network tests, in particular, working memory (two-back detectability), superior working memory (three-back detectability), and inattentiveness (hit reaction time standard error). Linear mixed effects models were adjusted for age, sex, maternal education, socioeconomic status, and air pollution exposure at home. Children from highly polluted schools had a smaller growth in cognitive development than children from the paired lowly polluted schools, both in crude and adjusted models (e.g., 7.4% [95% CI 5.6%–8.8%] versus 11.5% [95% CI 8.9%–12.5%] improvement in working memory, p = 0.0024). Cogently, children attending schools with higher levels of EC, NO2, and UFP both indoors and outdoors experienced substantially smaller growth in all the cognitive measurements; for example, a change from the first to the fourth quartile in indoor EC reduced the gain in working memory by 13.0% (95% CI 4.2%–23.1%). Residual confounding for social class could not be discarded completely; however, the associations remained in stratified analyses (e.g., for type of school or high-/low-polluted area) and after additional adjustments (e.g., for commuting, educational quality, or smoking at home), contradicting a potential residual confounding explanation. In order to address road traffic emissions, studies need to be performed under realistic driving conditions where the input from other sources is minimised. Measurements in traffic tunnels have been used for quantifying emissions, but so far no study has established emission factors (EFs) for Southern Europe. To fill this gap, a sampling campaign was carried out for one week in the Liberdade Avenue tunnel (Braga, Portugal). The campaign included the monitoring of gaseous pollutants (CO 2 , CO, NO x ) and suspended particulate matter (PM) at two sites, one in the tunnel and another in an urban background location. Organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC) in size-segregated particles (PM 0.5, PM 0.5–1 , PM 1–2.5 and PM 2.5–10 ) were determined by a thermal–optical system, whereas major and trace elements were analysed by ICP-MS and ICP-AES. PM 0.5 accounted for 56% of the PM 10 mass, while PM 2.5–10 represented only 12%. The carbonaceous fraction was concentrated in PM 0.5 , encompassing 88% of the EC and 67% of the OC present in PM 10 . Elements attributable to non-exhaust emissions could be divided into two groups. Fe, Ba, Cu, Sb, Sn and Zn, from tyre and brake wear, were more abundant in particles between 1 and 2 μm. Ca, Al, K, Sr and Ti, associated with soil resuspension, were mainly present in particles > 2 μm. The average EFs of CO, CO 2 and NO x were 212, 4.02 and 1.22 g veh − 1 km − 1 , respectively, while values of 152 mg PM 10 veh − 1 km − 1 and 133 mg PM 2.5 veh − 1 km − 1 were obtained for the particles. OC and EC emission factor was 39 mg veh − 1 km − 1 for PM 10 . The corresponding OC and EC values for PM 2.5 were 34 and 38 mg veh − 1 km − 1 . A detailed spatial and temporal assessment of urban NH 3 levels and potential emission sources was made with passive samplers in six major Spanish cities (Barcelona, Madrid, A Coruña, Huelva, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Valencia). Measurements were conducted during two different periods (winter–autumn and spring–summer) in each city. Barcelona showed the clearest spatial pattern, with the highest concentrations in the old city centre, an area characterised by a high population density and a dense urban architecture. The variability in NH 3 concentrations did not follow a common seasonal pattern across the different cities. The relationship of urban NH 3 with SO 2 and NO X allowed concluding on the causes responsible for the variations in NH 3 levels between measurement periods observed in Barcelona, Huelva and Madrid. However, the factors governing the variations in A Coruña, Valencia and Santa Cruz de Tenerife are still not fully understood. This study identified a broad variability in NH 3 concentrations at the city-scale, and it confirms that NH 3 sources in Spanish urban environments are vehicular traffic, biological sources (e.g. garbage containers), wastewater treatment plants, solid waste treatment plants and industry. The importance of NH 3 monitoring in urban environments relies on its role as a precursor of secondary inorganic species and therefore PM X . Further research should be addressed in order to establish criteria to develop and implement mitigation strategies for cities, and to include urban NH 3 sources in the emission inventories. This paper reports on results from a multi-sampling campaign (stack, fugitive emissions and ambient air measurements) to characterise the geochemical signature of metal and metalloid particles emitted from one of the largest Cu-smelters in the world (in Huelva, SW Spain). Exceptionally high concentrations of very fine particles (<0.33 μm) bearing As, Cd, Pb, Cu, Bi, Zn (∑>100 μg m −3 ) are emitted from the Flash Smelting Furnaces, but high levels are also emitted by the other main chimney stacks, namely Refining Furnaces, Sulphuric Plant, Converters Unit, and Crushing Plant. Enhanced concentrations of the same elements are also observed in ground measurements near the industrial complex. During the sampling campaign, the presence of plumes from the Cu-smelter over the nearby city of Huelva was identified based on increased concentrations of gaseous pollutants, particulate metals and ultrafine particle numbers (PN). The results demonstrate that the Cu-smelter is an important source of inhalable toxic elements carried by fine airborne particles. The pollution abatement systems applied so far appear to be relatively ineffective in preventing metalliferous air pollution events, potentially increasing health risks to local and regional populations. Abstract: Fly ash (FA) disposal in landfills has a significant economic and environmental burden. A promising approach for FA valorisation aside from building purposes is the recovery of valuable elements since FA has a huge potential role as a source of valuable metals. In most cases, reported work in this area has been of theoretical research and further development work is needed. Germanium and gallium occur in relatively high proportions and mainly as water soluble and oxide species, respectively in the Puertollano Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) fly ash. Both the speciation and concentrations of Ge and Ga in this IGCC FA allowed starting research for developing extraction methods. High but not regular extraction yields were achieved in previous investigations. The aim of this research work is focused on the optimisation of Ge and Ga extraction conditions from IGCC FA for its feasible industrial application regardless the operational conditions of the IGCC plant. To this aim, first the daily, monthly, and yearly variability of Ge and Ga concentrations in IGCC fly ashes were determined. Samples were taken during almost 10years. Then a number of extraction tests were carried out using different extractants to cover a wide range of extraction conditions (acid, alkaline, complexant, reducing and oxidising), on IGCC FA samples produced under different operating conditions. High and regular Ge extraction yields (up to 83% after 2h leaching period) may be achieved using a weak acid solution. Gallium yielded up to 70 and 64% extraction after a 24h leaching period using a weak acid and alkaline solution, respectively. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

[Display omitted] • The late Triassic coals from, Northeastern Vietnam were formed in limnic sedimentary environment. • Coals from the Coc Sau open-pit mine in Cam Pha Coalfield are promising economic source of critical elements (Rb and Cs). • High enriched Rb and Cs in the Coc Sau coals most likely occur in K-rich clay minerals, e.g., muscovite. • Rb and Cs enrichment are originated from terrigenous influx from felsic-intermediate sediment provenance. The current study investigates the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the Late Triassic coals from the Coc Sau open-pit mine, Cam Pha Coalfield (Quang Ninh Province, Northeastern Vietnam) using Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), inductively coupled plasma atomic-emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Coals from Coc Sau open-pit mine are characterized by medium ash yield (avg. 29.7%), low sulfur content (avg. 0.17%), and low moisture content (avg. 1.8%). The volatile matter content (avg. 8.4%) indicates a semianthracite rank. The crystalline phases identified in Coc Sau coals and host rocks (roof, floor, parting) are primarily quartz, kaolinite and muscovite, with small proportions of ankerite, clinochlore, anatase, calcite, and tobelite. Illite, pyrite, and siderite were occasionally detected in individual samples. In addition, several minerals below the XRD detection limit, such as barite, apatite, zircon, xenotime, and florencite were observed by SEM. The low sulfur concentrations, low Sr/Ba ratio and relatively high ash yield of these coals indicate a continental lake basin sedimentary environment with a relatively strong supply of terrigenous detritus. Quartz, kaolinite, and muscovite were most likely derived from the terrigenous source region surrounding the basin, and the other minerals are mainly of authigenic origin. Relative to worldwide coals, the Coc Sau coals and host rocks are highly enriched in Rb and Cs, which can be a potential source for Rb and Cs recovery during coal utilization and combustion. Rubidium and Cs enriched in the coals are positively correlated with Al and K, indicating that they most likely occur in potassium-rich clay minerals (e.g., muscovite), and originate from weathered felsic terrigenous detritus. Abstract: The chemical analysis of 553 school playground and classroom PM2.5 filters collected during the BREATHE sampling campaign in Barcelona, Spain, reveals a remarkable degree of spatial and temporal variability in ambient PM composition. Classroom air quality shows average PM2.5 concentrations of 37 μg m−3 (28% higher than outdoors), with much of this mass comprising carbon (including abundant cotton fibres), blackboard chalk particles and silicates. Where sandy playgrounds are present these exert a major influence on inhalable PM2.5 concentrations both indoors and outdoors. Throughout the city there is widespread contamination by metalliferous traffic particles, especially at schools located close to major urban highways where outdoor EC levels can be an order of magnitude higher than in peripheral, green belt schools. Penetration into the classroom of outdoor EC, ammonium sulphate and anthropogenic metals such as Cu, Sn, Sb, Zn and V is pervasive, especially during warmer months. In contrast, levels of nitrate and ammonium are much higher outdoors than in the classroom, especially during winter. Abstract: Shipping emissions are currently increasing and will most likely continue to do so in the future due to the increase of global-scale trade. Ship emissions have the potential to contribute to air quality degradation in coastal areas, in addition to contributing to global air pollution. With the aim to quantify the impacts of shipping emissions on urban air quality in coastal areas in Europe, an in depth literature review was carried out focussing on particulate matter and gaseous pollutants but also reviewing the main chemical tracers of shipping emissions, the particle size distribution of ship-derived particulates and their contributions to population exposure and atmospheric deposition. Mitigation strategies were also addressed. In European coastal areas, shipping emissions contribute with 1–7% of ambient air PM10 levels, 1–14% of PM2.5, and at least 11% of PM1. Contributions from shipping to ambient NO2 levels range between 7 and 24%, with the highest values being recorded in the Netherlands and Denmark. Impacts from shipping emissions on SO2 concentrations were reported for Sweden and Spain. Shipping emissions impact not only the levels and composition of particulate and gaseous pollutants, but may also enhance new particle formation processes in urban areas. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Trace and major elements concentrations in PM10 and PM2.5 were measured at 20 sites spread in the Barcelona metropolitan area (1 rural background, 6 urban background, 13 road traffic sites) and at 1 reference site. Three 2-week samples per site and size fraction were collected during 2009 using low volume samplers, adding a total of 120 samples. Collected samples were analysed for elemental composition using Energy Dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF). EC, OC, and hopanes and steranes concentrations in PM2.5 were determined. Positive Matrix Factorisation (PMF) model was used for a source apportionment analysis. The work was performed as part of the ESCAPE project. Elements were found in concentrations within the usual range in Spanish urban areas. Mineral elements were measured in higher concentrations during the warm season, due to enhanced resuspension; concentrations of fueloil combustion elements were also higher in summer. Elements in higher concentration at the traffic sites were: Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Pb, Sn, Zn and Zr. Spatial variations related to non-traffic sources were observed for concentrations of Br, Cl, K, and Na (sea salt origin) and Ni, V and S (shipping emissions), which were higher at the coastal sites, as well as for Zn and Pb, higher at sites closer to industrial facilities. Five common sources for PM10 and PM2.5 were identified by PMF: road traffic (with tracers Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mo and Zn); fueloil combustion (Ni and V); secondary sulphate; industry (Pb and Zn); and mineral source (Al, Ca, Mg, Si, Sr and Ti). A marine aerosol source, a mixture of sea salt with aged anthropogenic aerosols, was found only in PM10. EC, hopanes and steranes concentrations correlate strongly with the PM10 road traffic source contributions, being hence all attributed to the same source. OC may arise from other sources in addition to road traffic and have a high contribution of secondary OC. Significant spatial and temporal variation in the PM2.5 and PM10 elemental composition was found. Spatial patterns differed per element, related to the main source. Abstract: Wildfires produce a significant release of gases and particles affecting climate and air quality. In the Mediterranean region, shrublands significantly contribute to burned areas and may show specific emission profiles. Our objective was to depict and quantify the primary-derived aerosols and precursors of secondary particulate species released during shrubland experimental fires, in which fire-line intensity values were equivalent to those of moderate shrubland wildfires, by using a number of different methodologies for the characterization of organic and inorganic compounds in both gas-phase and particulate-phase. Emissions of PM mass, particle number concentrations and organic and inorganic PM x components during flaming and smouldering phases were characterized in a field shrubland fire experiment. Our results revealed a clear prevalence of K+ and SO4 2− as inorganic ions released during the flaming–smouldering processes, accounting for 68–80% of the inorganic soluble fraction. During the residual-smouldering phases, in addition to K+ and SO4 2−, Ca2+ was found in significant amounts probably due the predominance of re-suspension processes (ashes and soil dust) over other emission sources during this stage. Concerning organic markers, the chromatograms were dominated by phenols, n-alkanals and n-alkanones, as well as by alcohol biomarkers in all the PM x fractions investigated. Levoglucosan was the most abundant degradation compound with maximum emission factors between 182 and 261 mg kg−1 in PM2.5 and PM10 respectively. However, levoglucosan was also observed in significant amounts in the gas-phase. The most representative organic volatile constituents in the smoke samples were alcohols, carbonyls, acids, monocyclic and bicyclic arenes, isoprenoids and alkanes compounds. The emission factors obtained in this study may contribute to the validation and improvement of national and international emission inventories of this intricate and diffuse emission source. Abstract: This work was carried out in the framework of the Cal-Mex project, which focuses on investigating the atmosphere along Mexico–California border region. Sampling was carried out at two sites located in Tijuana urban area: Parque Morelos and Metales y Derivados. PM2.5 and PM10 24 h samples were collected every three days from 17th May 2010 to 27th June 2010, and were used for gravimetric and chemical analyses (major and minor elements, inorganic ions, organic and elemental carbon) of PM. A subsequent Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) analysis was performed. PM2.5 and PM10 average concentrations during Cal-Mex were relatively lower compared to usual annual averages. Trace elements concentrations recorded in the present study were lower than those recorded in Mexico City in 2006, with the exception of Pb at Metales y Derivados, attributed to the influence of a specific industrial source, which also includes As, Cd and Tl. Apart from this industrial source, both urban sites were found to be affected by similar sources with respect to bulk PM. Fine PM (PM2.5) was mainly apportioned by fueloil and biomass combustion and secondary aerosols, and road traffic. Coarse PM (PM2.5–10) was mainly apportioned by a mineral source (sum of road dust resuspension, construction emissions and natural soil) and fresh and aged sea salt. Abstract: An artificial neural network (ANN) was developed and tested to forecast PM10 daily concentration in two contrasted environments in NE Spain, a regional background site (Montseny), and an urban background site (Barcelona-CSIC), which was highly influenced by vehicular emissions. In order to predict 24-h average PM10 concentrations, the artificial neural network previously developed by Caselli et al. (2009) was improved by using hourly PM concentrations and deterministic factors such as a Saharan dust alert. In particular, the model input data for prediction were the hourly PM10 concentrations 1-day in advance, local meteorological data and information about air masses origin. The forecasted performance indexes for both sites were calculated and they showed better results for the regional background site in Montseny (R2 =0.86, SI=0.75) than for urban site in Barcelona (R2 =0.73, SI=0.58), influenced by local and sometimes unexpected sources. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis conducted to understand the importance of the different variables included among the input data, showed that local meteorology and air masses origin are key factors in the model forecasts. This result explains the reason for the improvement of ANN's forecasting performance at the Montseny site with respect to the Barcelona site. Moreover, the artificial neural network developed in this work could prove useful to predict PM10 concentrations, especially, at regional background sites such as those on the Mediterranean Basin which are primarily affected by long-range transports. Hence, the artificial neural network presented here could be a powerful tool for obtaining real time information on air quality status and could aid stakeholders in their development of cost-effective control strategies. Abstract: An intensive monitoring campaign was carried out in the harbor of Barcelona (Spain) to quantify the contribution of primary shipping emissions (PSE) on PM10. Chemical composition of inorganic species, as well as OC and EC, was completed, and a source apportionment analysis by Positive Matrix Factorization was conducted. Among the 6 sources extracted, two were linked to harbor emissions: dusty materials released in different areas along the harbor and fuel–oil combustion. On average, harbor emissions accounted for 31% of the PM10 mass. Since the chemical signature of PSE was not determined neither their contribution was obtained, additional approaches were followed and mainly consisted in: 1) the evaluation of V/Ni and V/Cu ratios to identify those days affected by PSE; 2) the identification of the chemical components increasing under the influence of PSE; 3) the calculation of the daily and average PSE from their experimentally-determined chemical signature and the experimental concentrations of vanadium. As a result, the contribution of PSE was estimated in 0.84μgm−3 (2.7% of PM10) and the residual fuel–oil combustion factor (3.6μgm−3, 12% of PM10) was interpreted as aged shipping emissions. The present study splits the contribution of shipping emissions into primary and aged, and highlights the importance of atmospheric mixing and aging processes in western Mediterranean atmospheres. Abstract: Comparative studies of the mineral matter and trace elements in 12 pairs of run-of-mine (ROM) and clean-coal products from beneficiation plants in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, have been carried out using low-temperature oxygen-plasma ashing, X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis techniques with the aim of evaluating the effect of coal preparation on the mineralogy and chemical composition of the final coal products. The results show that substantial reductions in mineral matter and ash percentages are associated with beneficiation of coals mined from the different deposits. These reductions are accompanied by changes in the percentages of Fe2O3 in the respective coal ashes, due to the reduction in the proportion of pyrite in the mineral matter, and also by a reduction in the percentage of Na2O, possibly due to ion exchange within the clay minerals. The relative proportions of quartz, clay minerals, and minor phases such as calcite and feldspar (mainly albite) within the mineral matter are not, however, significantly changed by the beneficiation processes. The concentrations of most trace elements in the beneficiation products are similar to the respective concentrations in the relevant ROM materials, or are reduced to an extent similar to that of the total mineral matter percentage for the respective coal samples. This suggests an association mainly with the clay-rich mineral matter. The concentrations of As and Pb, however, are reduced to a greater extent for most samples by the beneficiation processes, consistent with a pyrite association. Concentrations of Ge, U and Zr are higher in many of the clean coals than in the respective run-of-mine materials, suggesting the possibility of preferential association, at least for some deposits, with the organic-rich fractions of the coals concerned.
