Abstract

We propose a model of Dark Supersymmetry, where a supersymmetric dark sector is coupled to the classically scale invariant non-supersymmetric Standard Model through the Higgs portal. The dark sector contains a mass scale that is protected against radiative corrections by supersymmetry, and the portal coupling mediates this scale to the Standard Model, resulting in a vacuum expectation value for the Higgs field and the usual electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism. The supersymmetric dark sector contains dark matter candidates, and we show that the observed dark matter abundance is generated for a natural choice of parameters, while avoiding the current experimental bounds on direct detection. Abstract

We propose a model of a confining dark sector, dark technicolor, that communicates with the Standard Model through the Higgs portal. In this model electroweak symmetry breaking and dark matter share a common origin, and the electroweak scale is generated dynamically. Our motivation to suggest this model is the absense of evidence for new physics from recent LHC data. Although the conclusion is far from certain at this point, this lack of evidence may suggest that no mechanism exists at the electroweak scale to stabilise the Higgs mass against radiative corrections from UV physics. The usual reaction to this puzzling situation is to conclude that the stabilising new physics is either hidden from us by accident, or that it appears at energies that are currently inaccessible, such that nature is indeed fine-tuned. In order to re-examine the arguments that have lead to this dichotomy, we review the concept of naturalness in effective field theories, discussing in particular the role of quadratic divergences in relation to different energy scales. This leads us to suggest classical scale invariance as a guidline for model building, implying that explicit mass scales are absent in the underlying theory., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure. Abstract

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a hetero geneous group of cells, which can suppress the immune response, promote tumor progression and impair the efficacy of immunotherapies. Consequently, the pharmacological targeting of MDSC is emerging as a new immunotherapeutic strategy to stimulate the natural anti-tumor immune response and potentiate the efficacy of immunotherapies. Herein, we leveraged genetically modified models and a small molecule inhibitor to validate Calcium-Calmodulin Kinase Kinase 2 (CaMKK2) as a druggable target to control MDSC accumulation in tumor-bearing mice. The results indicated that deletion of CaMKK2 in the host attenuated the growth of engrafted tumor cells, and this phenomenon was associated with increased antitumor T cell response and decreased accumulation of MDSC. The adoptive transfer of MDSC was sufficient to restore the ability of the tumor to grow in Camkk2-/- mice, confirming the key role of MDSC in the mechanism of tumor rejection. In vitro studies indicated that blocking of CaMKK2 is sufficient to impair the yield of MDSC. Surprisingly, MDSC generated from Camkk2-/- bone marrow cells also showed a higher ability to terminally differentiate toward more immunogenic cell types (e.g inflammatory macrophages and dendritic cells) compared to wild type (WT). Higher intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulated in Camkk2-/- MDSC, increasing their susceptibility to apoptosis and promoting their terminal differentiation toward more mature myeloid cells. Mechanistic studies indicated that AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which is a known CaMKK2 proximal target controlling the oxidative stress response, fine-tunes ROS accumulation in MDSC. Accordingly, failure to activate the CaMKK2-AMPK axis can account for the elevated ROS levels in Camkk2-/- MDSC. These results highlight CaMKK2 as an important regulator of the MDSC lifecycle, identifying this kinase as a new druggable target to restrain MDSC expansion and enhance the efficacy of anti-tumor immunotherapy.

Abstract

We analyze the impact of effective axial-vector coupling of the gluon on spin polarization observables in $t\bar{t}$ pair production at the LHC. Working at leading order in QCD, we compute the $t\bar{t}$ spin-correlation and left-right spin asymmetry coefficients in the helicity basis in the laboratory frame as functions of the new physics scale $\Lambda$ associated with this coupling. We found that the $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass dependent asymmetries are more sensitive to the scale $\Lambda$ than the corresponding inclusive ones, in particular when suitable cuts selecting high $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass regions are imposed. In the context of this scenario, we show that the LHC has potential either to confirm or to rule out the Tevatron FB top asymmetry anomaly by analyzing the $t\bar{t}$ spin-correlation and left-right polarization asymmetries. Abstract

Introduction Complete ureteral avulsion represents a rare and fearsome complication of ureteroscopy, reported in less than 1% of cases. In literature there are few reports and different options are presented for its treatment. We present a case of a ureteral avulsion managed with ileal ureter replacement. Case presentation A 67‐year‐old man with a left proximal ureter stone was treated at our department with ureteroscopy. During retrieval of the instrument a complete ureteral avulsion was discovered, with a so‐called “scabbard lesion”. We decided to proceed with immediate laparotomy and we performed a ileal ureter replacement. Conclusion Ureteral avulsion is a rare complication but must be known as a possible complication in high volume center. There is no standard definition regarding its treatment, and in our experience immediate treatment with ileal ureter replacement proved to be safe and effective without any changes in renal function.

Abstract

Partial nephrectomy (PN) is the gold standard treatment for localized renal masses. Robot-assisted PN (RAPN) has overcome laparoscopy’s technical limitations, greatly expanding the indications of minimally invasive PN, which is dominated by renal artery clamping in almost all published series. We compared off-clamp RAPN (OFFC-RAPN) with the open approach (OFFC-OPN) using propensity score (PS) matching. A favourable pentafecta outcome was defined as a combination of no positive surgical margins (PSM), no complications of Clavien–Dindo (CD) grade ≥ 3, post-operative eGFR loss p = 0.003), lower EBL (182.1 vs. 329.3 mL, p = 0.001), and shorter LOS (5.8 vs. 6.9 days, p = 0.02), with a higher proportion of patients with LOS ≤ 5 days (57.7% vs. 23.9%, p < 0.001). No significant differences were found for PSM rate (2.8% vs. 8.4%, p = 0.27), CD > 2 complication rate (4.2% vs. 2.8%, p = 1.00) and mean ± SD eGFR change (−0.06 ± 0.3 vs. −0.8 ± 0.3, p = 0.5). Pentafecta was achieved in 56.3% and 21.1% in the OFFC-RAPN and OFFC-OPN series, respectively (p < 0.0001). On multivariable analysis, surgical approach and BMI proved to be independent predictors of achieving pentafecta. After adjusting for potential treatment selection bias, OFFC-RAPN outperformed OFFC-OPN for important peri-operative outcomes, without compromising oncological and functional safety.

Abstract

If a light Higgs boson with mass 125 GeV is fermiophobic, or partially fermiophobic, then the MSSM is excluded. The minimal supersymmetric fermiophobic Higgs scenario can naturally be formulated in the context of the NMSSM that admits Z_3 discrete symmetries. In the fermiophobic NMSSM, the SUSY naturalness criteria are relaxed by a factor N_c y_t^4/g^4 \sim 25, removing the little hierarchy problem and allowing sparticle masses to be naturally of order 2--3 TeV. This scale motivates wino or higgsino dark matter. The SUSY flavour and CP problems as well as the constraints on sparticle and Higgs boson masses from b \to s\gamma, B_s \to \mu\mu\ and direct LHC searches are relaxed in fermiophobic NMSSM. The price to pay is that a new, yet unknown, mechanism must be introduced to generate fermion masses. We show that in the fermiophobic NMSSM the radiative Higgs boson branchings to \gamma\gamma, \gamma Z can be modified compared to the fermiophobic and ordinary standard model predictions, and fit present collider data better. Abstract

We study different top quark charge asymmetries and the variation of $t\bar t$ total cross section induced by the effective axial-vector coupling of gluon in the LHC experiments. We show that rapidity cut-dependent asymmetries are more sensitive to the new physics than the independent ones. We also study the dependence of the asymmetries and variations of total $t\bar t$ cross sections on the invariant mass of $t\bar t$ system and show that it would be necessary to measure those quantities as functions of $m_{tt}$ at the LHC. In the context of considered new physics scenario, 7 TeV LHC has enough sensitivity either to confirm the Tevatron top asymmetry anomaly or to rule it out. Abstract

We study phenomenological implications of the ATLAS and CMS hint of a $125\pm 1$ GeV Higgs boson for the singlet, and singlet plus doublet non-supersymmetric dark matter models, and for the phenomenology of the CMSSM. We show that in scalar dark matter models the vacuum stability bound on Higgs boson mass is lower than in the standard model and the 125 GeV Higgs boson is consistent with the models being valid up the GUT or Planck scale. We perform a detailed study of the full CMSSM parameter space keeping the Higgs boson mass fixed to $125\pm 1$ GeV, and study in detail the freeze-out processes that imply the observed amount of dark matter. After imposing all phenomenological constraints except for the muon $(g-2)_\mu,$ we show that the CMSSM parameter space is divided into well separated regions with distinctive but in general heavy sparticle mass spectra. Imposing the $(g-2)_\mu$ constraint introduces severe tension between the high SUSY scale and the experimental measurements -- only the slepton co-annihilation region survives with potentially testable sparticle masses at the LHC. In the latter case the spin-independent DM-nucleon scattering cross section is predicted to be below detectable limit at the XENON100 but might be of measurable magnitude in the general case of light dark matter with large bino-higgsino mixing and unobservably large scalar masses., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures. v3: same as published version

We study a supersymmetry breaking mechanism in the context of a minimal anomalous extension of the MSSM. The anomaly cancellation mechanism is achieved through suitable counterterms in the effective action, i.e. Green-Schwarz terms. We assume that the standard MSSM superpotential is perturbatively realized, i.e. all terms allowed by gauge symmetries, except for the $\mu$-term which has a non-perturbative origin. The presence of this term is expected in many intersecting D-brane models which can be considered as the ultraviolet completion of our model. 167. Long-lived charged Higgs at LHC as a probe of scalar Dark Matter

Abstract

We study inert charged Higgs boson $H^\pm$ production and decays at LHC experiments in the context of constrained scalar dark matter model (CSDMM). In the CSDMM the inert doublet and singlet scalar's mass spectrum is predicted from the GUT scale initial conditions via RGE evolution. We compute the cross sections of processes $pp\to H^+H^-,\, H^\pm S_i^0$ at the LHC and show that for light $H^\pm$ the first one is dominated by top quark mediated 1-loop diagram with Higgs boson in s-channel. In a significant fraction of the parameter space $H^\pm$ are long-lived because their decays to predominantly singlet scalar dark matter (DM) and next-to-lightest (NL) scalar, $H^\pm\to S_{\text{DM, NL}} ff',$ are suppressed by the small singlet-doublet mixing angle and by the moderate mass difference $ \Delta M=M_{H^+}-M_{\text{DM}} .$ The experimentally measurable displaced vertex in $H^\pm$ decays to leptons and/or jets and missing energy allows one to discover the $H^+H^-$ signal over the huge $W^+W^-$ background. We propose benchmark points for studies of this scenario at the LHC. If, however, $H^\pm$ are short-lived, the subsequent decays $S_{\text{NL}}\to S_{\text{DM}} f\bar f$ necessarily produce additional displaced vertices that allow to reconstruct the full $H^\pm$ decay chain., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The requirements of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) and correct thermal relic density of Dark Matter (DM) predict large spin-independent direct detection cross section in scalar DM models based on underlying SO(10) non-supersymmetric GUT. Interpreting the CDMS signal events as DM recoil on nuclei, we study implications of this assumption on EWSB, Higgs boson mass and direct production of scalar DM at LHC experiments. We show that this interpretation indicates relatively light DM, M_DM ~ O(100) GeV, with large pair production cross section at LHC in correlation with the spin-independent direct DM detection cross section. The next-to-lightest dark scalar S_NL is predicted to be long-lived, providing distinctive experimental signatures of displaced vertex of two leptons or jets plus missing transverse energy., Comment: References added, 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Scalar Dark Matter (DM) can have dimensionful coupling to the Higgs boson - the "soft" portal into DM - which is predicted to be unsuppressed by underlying SO(10) GUT. The dimensionful coupling can be large, \mu/v >> 1, without spoiling perturbativity of low energy theory up to the GUT scale. We show that the soft portal into DM naturally triggers radiative EWSB via large 1-loop DM corrections to the effective potential. In this scenario EWSB, DM thermal freeze-out cross section and DM scattering on nuclei are all dominated by the same coupling, predicting DM mass range to be 700 GeV< M_{DM} < 2 TeV. Abstract

During the last few decades scientists have been able to test the bases of the physics paradigms, where the quantum mechanics has to match the cosmological scales. Between the extremes of this scenario, biological phenomena and their complexity take place, challenging the laws we observe in the atomic and sub-atomic world. In order to explore the details of this world, new huge experimental facilities are under construction. These projects involve people coming from several countries and give physicists the opportunity to work together with chemists, biologists and other scientists. The Roman Young Researchers Meeting is a conference, organised by Ph. D. students and young postdocs connected to the Roman area. It is aimed primarily at graduate students and post-docs, working in physics. The 1st conference has been held on the 21st of July 2009 at the University of Roma Tor Vergata. It was organised in three sessions, devoted to Astrophysics and Cosmology, Soft and Condensed Matter Physics and Theoretical and Particle Physics. Abstract

This Thesis reviews an extension of the MSSM by the addition of an anomalous abelian vector multiplet and contains some original results concerning the phenomenology of an anomalous $Z'$. The review part covers an introduction of the MSSM focusing on its main features, a discussion on the chiral anomalies and how to cancel them in the Standard Model and by the Green-Schwarz mechanism. Then, the original results are presented. We build the Lagrangian for the Minimal Anomalous $U(1)'$ Extension of the MSSM where the anomalies are cancelled by the Green-Schwarz mechanism and the addition of Chern-Simons terms, stressing the main differences between our model and the MSSM. The advantage of this choice over the standard one is that it allows for arbitrary values of the quantum numbers of the extra U(1). As a first step towards the study of hadron annihilations producing four leptons in the final state (a clean signal which might be studied at LHC) we then compute the decays $Z'\to Z_0 \g$ and $Z'\to Z_0 Z_0$. We find that the largest values of the decay rate are $\sim 10^{-4}$ GeV, while the expected number of events per year at LHC is at most of the order of 10. Then we compute the relic density predicted by our model with a new dark matter candidate, the axino, which is the LSP of the theory. Abstract

We study the neutralino radiative decay into the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) in the framework of a minimal anomalous U(1)' extension of the MSSM. It turns out that in a suitable decoupling limit the axino, which is present in the St\"uckelberg multiplet, is the LSP. We compute the branching ratio (BR) for the decay of a neutralino into an axino and a photon. Abstract

Ascidians present a striking dichotomy between conserved phenotypes and divergent genomes: embryonic cell lineages and gene expression patterns are conserved between distantly related species. Much research has focused on Ciona or Halocynthia spp. but development in other ascidians remains poorly characterized. In this study, we surveyed the multipotent myogenic B7.5 lineage in Molgula spp. Comparisons to the homologous lineage in Ciona revealed identical cell division and fate specification events that result in segregation of larval, cardiac, and pharyngeal muscle progenitors. Moreover, the expression patterns of key regulators are conserved, but cross-species transgenic assays uncovered incompatibility, or 'unintelligibility', of orthologous cis-regulatory sequences between Molgula and Ciona. These sequences drive identical expression patterns that are not recapitulated in cross-species assays. We show that this unintelligibility is likely due to changes in both cis- and trans-acting elements, hinting at widespread and frequent turnover of regulatory mechanisms underlying otherwise conserved aspects of ascidian embryogenesis.

Abstract

Simple Summary: New devices are being developed and proliferated worldwide to perform robotic surgery. The sharing of data resulting from performing a large number of procedures with the HugoTM RAS system aims to demonstrate its reliability and potential use in different scenarios. In our case series, this new device has proven to be reliable in performing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy. We list the solutions we applied to address the technical issues of the system and show that these did not have a significant impact on patients and procedures. Background: Robotic-assisted surgery is the gold standard for performing radical prostatectomy (RARP), with new robotic devices such as HugoTM RAS gaining prominence worldwide. Objective: We report the surgical, perioperative, and early postoperative outcomes of RARP using HugoTM RAS. Design, setting, and participants: Between April 2022 and October 2023, we performed 132 procedures using the Montsouris technique with a four-robotic-arm configuration in patients with biopsy-proven prostate cancer (PCa). Outcome measures: We collected intraoperative and perioperative data during hospitalization, along with follow-up data at predefined postoperative intervals of 3 and 6 months. Results and limitations: Lymphadenectomy was performed in 25 procedures, with a bilateral nerve-sparing technique in 33 and a monolateral nerve-sparing technique in 33 cases. The mean total surgery time was 242 (±57) min, the mean console time was 124 (±48) min, and the mean docking time was 10 (±2) min. We identified 17 system errors related to robotic arm failures, 9 robotic instrument breakdowns, and 8 significant conflicts between robotic arms. One post-operative complication was classified as Clavien–Dindo 3b. None of the adverse events, whether singular or combined, increased the operative time. Positive margins (pR1) were found in 54 (40.9%) histological specimens, 37 (28.0%) of which were clinically significant. At 3 and 6 months post-surgery, the PSA levels were undetectable in 94.6% and 92.1% of patients, respectively. Social urinary continence was regained in 86% after 6 months. Limitations of our study include its observational monocentric case-series design and the short follow-up data for functional and oncological outcomes. Conclusions: Our initial experience highlights the reliability of the HugoTM RAS system in performing RARP. Additionally, we also list problems and solutions found in our daily work. 176. Financial Toxicity and Quality of Life in Patients Undergoing Stem-Cell Transplant Evaluation: A Single-Center Analysis.

Abstract

PURPOSE: We investigated the prevalence of financial toxicity in a population undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) evaluation and measured its impact on post-transplant clinical and health-related quality-of-life outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective study in patients undergoing evaluation for allogeneic HCT between January 1, 2018, and September 23, 2020, at a large academic medical center. Financial health was measured via a baseline survey and the comprehensive score for financial toxicity-functional assessment of chronic illness therapy (COST-FACIT) survey. The cohort was divided into three groups: none (grade 0), mild (grade 1), and moderate-high financial toxicity (grades 2-3). Health-related quality of life outcomes were measured at multiple time points. Multivariate logistic regression analysis evaluated factors associated with financial toxicity. Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank tests was used to evaluate overall survival (OS) and nonrelapse survival. RESULTS: Of 245 patients evaluated for transplant, 176 (71.8%) completed both questionnaires (median age was 57 years, 63.1% were male, 72.2% were White, and 39.2% had myelodysplastic syndrome, 38.1% leukemia, and 13.6% lymphoma). At initial evaluation, 83 (47.2%) patients reported no financial toxicity, 51 (29.0%) with mild, and 42 (23.9%) with moderate-high financial toxicity. Patients with financial toxicity reported significant cost-cutting behaviors, including reduced spending on food or clothing, using their savings, or not filling a prescription because of costs (P <.0001). Quality of life was lower in patients with moderate-high financial toxicity at 6 months (P =.0007) and 1 year (P =.0075) after transplant. Older age (>62; odds ratio [OR], 0.33 [95% CI, 0.13 to 0.79]; P =.04) and income ≥$60,000 in US dollars (USD) (OR, 0.17 [95% CI, 0.08 to 0.38]; P <.0001) were associated with lower odds of financial toxicity. No association was noted between financial toxicity and selection for transplant, OS, or nonrelapse mortality. CONCLUSION: Financial toxicity was highly correlated with patient-reported changes in compensatory behavior, with notable impact on patient quality of life after transplant. Abstract

We study a possible dark matter candidate in the framework of a minimal anomalous $U(1)'$ extension of the MSSM. It turns out that in a suitable decoupling limit the St\"uckelino, the fermionic degree of freedom of the St\"uckelberg multiplet, is the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). We compute the relic density of this particle including coannihilations with the next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) and with the next to next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NNLSP) which are assumed almost degenerate in mass. This assumption is needed in order to satisfy the stringent limits that the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) puts on the relic density. We find that the WMAP constraints can be satisifed by different NLSP and NNLSP configurations as a function of the mass gap with the LSP. Abstract

Abstract We review the physics opportunities of the Future Circular Collider, covering its e+e-, pp, ep and heavy ion programmes. We describe the measurement capabilities of each FCC component, addressing the study of electroweak, Higgs and strong interactions, the top quark and flavour, as well as phenomena beyond the Standard Model. We highlight the synergy and complementarity of the different colliders, which will contribute to a uniquely coherent and ambitious research programme, providing an unmatchable combination of precision and sensitivity to new physics.

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used for quantitative gold mass measurement and two-photon photoluminescence (TPL) was used for high-resolution sensitive optical imaging.Results: GNS nanoparticles were loaded successfully into immune cells without negative effect on cellular vitality. Liver and spleen were identified to be the major organs for macrophage cells uptake after systematic administration. 193. A minimal model of inflation and dark radiation

Abstract

We show that a minimal extension of the Standard Model including a new complex scalar field can explain inflation and the observed effective number of neutrinos. The real part of the singlet plays the rôle of the inflaton field, while the Goldstone boson emerging from the spontaneous symmetry breaking of a global U(1) symmetry contributes to dark radiation and increases the effective number of neutrino species by 0.3 over the Standard Model value. After detailing the phenomenology of the model, we find that the predicted inflationary observables are in agreement with the current bounds, once the dark radiation component is allowed, both within the metric and Palatini formulation of non-minimally coupled gravity. Abstract

We study an extension of the MSSM by an anomalous abelian vector multiplet and a St\"uckelberg multiplet. The anomalies are cancelled by the Green-Schwarz mechanism and the addition of Chern-Simons terms. The advantage of this choice over the standard one is that it allows for arbitrary values of the quantum numbers of the extra U(1). As a first step towards the study of hadron annihilations producing four leptons in the final state (a clean signal which might be studied at LHC) we then compute the decays $Z'\to Z_0 \g$ and $Z'\to Z_0 Z_0$. We find that the largest values of the decay rate is $\sim 10^{-4}$ GeV, while the expected number of events per year at LHC is at most of the order of 10., Comment: 45 pages, 8 eps figures, feynmf.
