Abstract Background Although isolated distal deep vein thrombosis (IDDVT) is a clinical complication for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients, very few clinicians value it and few methods can predict early IDDVT. This study aimed to establish and validate an individualized predictive nomogram for the risk of early IDDVT in AIS patients. Methods This study enrolled 647 consecutive AIS patients who were randomly divided into a training cohort (n = 431) and a validation cohort (n = 216). Based on logistic analyses in training cohort, a nomogram was constructed to predict early IDDVT. The nomogram was then validated using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) and calibration plots. Results The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that age, gender, lower limb paralysis, current pneumonia, atrial fibrillation and malignant tumor were independent risk factors of early IDDVT; these variables were integrated to construct the nomogram. Calibration plots revealed acceptable agreement between the predicted and actual IDDVT probabilities in both the training and validation cohorts. The nomogram had AUROC values of 0.767 (95% CI: 0.742–0.806) and 0.820 (95% CI: 0.762–0.869) in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. Additionally, in the validation cohort, the AUROC of the nomogram was higher than those of the other scores for predicting IDDVT. Conclusions The present nomogram provides clinicians with a novel and easy-to-use tool for the prediction of the individualized risk of IDDVT in the early stages of AIS, which would be helpful to initiate imaging examination and interventions timely.

When a gas-liquid two-phase flow (GLTPF) enters a parallel separator through a T-junction, it generally splits unevenly. This phenomenon can seriously affect the operation efficiency and safety of the equipment located downstream. In order to investigate these aspects and, more specifically, the so-called bias phenomenon (all gas and liquid flowing to one pipe, while the other pipe is a liquid column that fluctuates up and down), laboratory experiments were carried out by using a T-junction connected to two parallel vertical pipes. Moreover, a GLTPF prediction model based on the principle of minimum potential energy was introduced. The research results indicate that this model can accurately predict the GLTPF state in parallel risers. The boundary of the slug flow and the churn flow in the opposite pipe can be predicted. Overall, according to the results, the pressure drop curves of the two-phase flow in the parallel risers are basically the same when there is no bias phenomenon, but the pressure drop in the parallel riser displays a large deviation when there is a slug flow-churn flow. Only when the parallel riser is in a state of asymmetric flow and one of the risers produces churn flow, the two-phase flow is prone to produce the bias phenomenon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Head and neck cancers are often diagnosed at later stages with poor outcomes. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are recruited to primary tumor sites where they can have pro- and antitumorigenic influence. In trying to better understand the dynamics between MSC and cancer cells, we found that head and neck cancer-MSC exposure resulted in mesenchymal features, elevated proliferation rate, and were more motile, like the same cells that fused with MSC. We orthotopically grafted the parental head and neck cancer cells, those fused with MSC, or those exposed to MSC into the tongues of mice. The cancer cells originally incubated with MSC developed larger more aggressive tumors compared to the parental cell line. RNA sequencing analysis revealed the expression of genes associated with drug resistance in the cancer cells exposed to MSC compared to parental cancer cells. Strikingly, MSC exposed cancer cell lines developed paclitaxel resistance that could be maintained up to 30 d after the initial co-incubation period. The secretory profile of the MSC suggested IL-6 to be a potential mediator of epigenetic imprinting on the head and neck cancer cells. When the MSC-imprinted cancer cells were exposed to the demethylation agent, 5-aza-2’deoxycytidine, it restored the expression of the drug resistance genes to that of parental cells. This study demonstrated that the recognized recruitment of MSC to tumors could impart multiple protumorigenic properties including chemotherapy resistance like that observed in the relatively rare event of cancer/MSC cell fusion.

Abstract Dental pulp can initiate its damage repair after an injury of the pulp–dentin complex by rearrangement of odontoblasts and formation of newly differentiated odontoblast-like cells. Connexin 43 (Cx43) is one of the gap junction proteins that participates in multiple tissue repair processes. However, the role of Cx43 in the repair of the dental pulp remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the function of Cx43 in the odontoblast arrangement patterns and odontoblastic differentiation. Human teeth for in vitro experiments were acquired, and a pulp injury model in Sprague-Dawley rats was used for in vivo analysis. The odontoblast arrangement pattern and the expression of Cx43 and dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) were assessed. To investigate the function of Cx43 in odontoblastic differentiation, we overexpressed or inhibited Cx43. The results indicated that polarized odontoblasts were arranged along the pulp–dentin interface and had high levels of Cx43 expression in the healthy teeth; however, the odontoblast arrangement pattern was slightly changed concomitant to an increase in the Cx43 expression in the carious teeth. Regularly arranged odontoblast-like cells had high levels of the Cx43 expression during the formation of mature dentin, but the odontoblast-like cells were not regularly arranged beneath immature osteodentin in the pulp injury models. Subsequent in vitro experiments demonstrated that Cx43 is upregulated during odontoblastic differentiation of the dental pulp cells, and inhibition or overexpression of Cx43 influence the odontoblastic differentiation. Thus, Cx43 may be involved in the maintenance of odontoblast arrangement patterns, and influence the pulp repair outcomes by the regulation of odontoblastic differentiation.

Abstract Background Hemorrhagic transformation (HT) is a serious neurological complication of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) after revascularization. The majority of AIS patients do not have atrial fibrillation (AF) which could also develop into HT. In this study, we aimed to explore whether hemostasis parameters are risk factors of HT in non-AF patients. Methods We consecutively enrolled 285 AIS patients with HT. Meanwhile, age- and sex-matched 285 AIS patients without HT were included. The diagnosis of HT was determined by brain CT or MRI during hospitalization. All patients were divided into two subgroups based on the presence of AF and explore the differences between the two subgroups. Blood samples were obtained within 24 h of admission, and all patients were evenly classified into three tertiles according to platelet counts (PLT) levels. Results In this study, we found the first PLT tertile (OR = 3.509, 95%CI = 1.268–9.711, P = 0.016) was independently associated with HT in non-AF patients, taking the third tertile as a reference. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the current knowledge levels on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillators of Chinese citizens. Methods: A face-to-face questionnaire survey on the knowledge of and attitudes toward the use of CPR and AEDs during an OHCA event was conducted in three high-traffic train stations in Hangzhou and Taizhou, China. The survey included questions on previous experience with CPR, recognition of cardiac arrest, CPR-related concerns, and AED knowledge. Results: A total of 6268 participants were surveyed about their knowledge of and attitudes toward the use of CPR and AEDs. A total of 5981 valid questionnaires, including 3008 from female respondents (50.2%) and 2973 from male respondents (49.8%), were retrieved. The participants were geographically distributed as follows: 18.5% from western China, 19.5% from central China, and 77.0% from eastern China. The educational level, regular residence, and sex of the respondents, as well as legislative policies, were relevant to the knowledge of and attitudes toward the use of CPR and AEDs for OHCA events. The results showed that men were more active than women in terms of CPR training and implementation, as well as had more knowledge and used AEDs more often. More people in eastern and central China had witnessed CPR performance, would pay for CPR training, and would be willing to perform CPR if there was a related legislative policy. Moreover, educational level was crucial to the knowledge of and attitudes toward the use of CPR and AEDs during OHCA events. Conclusions: Chinese citizens lack CPR and AED knowledge and training compared with people in developed countries. We recommend that the state should increase public awareness of CPR and AEDs in China. Mass education, policy implementation, specialized training, and legislative action should be carried out.

Abstract Background Lipid profiles are declined in patients with viral liver cirrhosis and correlated with severity of liver disease. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the leading cause of liver cirrhosis in China. Our primary aim was to investigate whether serum lipids and lipoproteins associate with survival in patients with HBV-related cirrhosis and acute gastrointestinal bleeding, and develop a 6-week mortality risk score that incorporates it. Methods From January 2008 to December 2015, consecutive cirrhotic patients with acute gastrointestinal bleeding admitted to our hospital were evaluated and randomly divided into the derivation (n = 629) and validation (n = 314) cohorts. A logistic regression model was established to confirm the association between lipoprotein cholesterol and mortality. Accuracy to predict mortality were assessed by area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROCs) and compared using the Hanley and McNeil test. Results Among study subjects, the 6-week mortality rate was 10.6%. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level was found to correlate most strongly with prognostic scores. On ROC analysis, HDL-C showed excellent diagnostic accuracy for 6-week mortality. Logistic regression analysis provided a simple algorithm based on the combined use of 4 variables (total bilirubin (TBIL), HDL-C, International normalized ratio, and hemoglobin), allowing accurate discrimination of 3 distinct prognostic subgroups with 1.7% (low risk), 12.3% (intermediate risk), and 56.9% (high risk) mortality. Its accuracy was significantly better than that of Child–Pugh, model of end-stage liver disease, albumin-bilirubin score, D’Amico model, Augustin model, AIMS65 score and Glasgow-Blatchford score. Baseline HDL-C values ≤ 0.54 mmol/L were associated with markedly lower 6-week survival. Comparable results were found in the validation set. Conclusion HDL-C is a potential indicator for the prognosis of patients with cirrhosis and acute gastrointestinal bleeding. The new algorithm based on HDL-C allowed an accurate predictive assessment of 6-week mortality after bleeding attack.

BackgroundSerum uric acid (UA) has been reported to be associated with ischemic stroke and inflammation. However, whether or not UA is related to the recurrence of ischemic stroke, and whether inflammation plays a role in the relationship between them remain inconclusive.ObjectiveWe sought to explore the relationship between UA and the recurrence of ischemic stroke and to define the role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in the aforementioned relationship.MethodsA total of 8,995 patients were included in this study. Basic information and blood samples were collected, and whether or not each participant experienced ischemic stroke recurrence within 3 years was documented. Patients were stratified into three groups according to their UA level, as follows: ≤ 266, 267–339, and ≥ 340 μmol/L. COX regression and restricted cubic spline regression models were used to evaluate the clinical correlation between UA and ischemic stroke recurrence, mediation analysis and interaction and joint analysis were used to evaluate the role of NLR in the association of UA and ischemic stroke recurrence, and sensitivity and subgroup analyses were performed to test the robustness of the data.ResultsIschemic stroke recurrence was related to male sex, older age, higher UA level, higher NLR, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Following adjustment for potential confounders, a high level of UA (≥ 340 μmol/L) increased the risk of recurrence by 92.6% in patients with previous ischemic stroke. We also found that NLR affects the association between UA and the recurrence of ischemic stroke in older adults, suggesting that patients with high NLR and high UA levels are at greater risk for ischemic stroke recurrence.ConclusionUA level is non-linearly associated with recurrence, and NLR has an additive interaction between UA and ischemic stroke recurrence.

Abstract Background Based on a national survey in 2015, people’s oral health behaviour (OHB) has not kept up with the pace of knowledge and attitudes in China after decades of oral health education (OHE). Thus, we need to improve OHE to strengthen people’s OHB. Undergraduates are regarded as the best candidates for the improvement of OHE. The objective of this study is to determine undergraduates’ oral health status and existing problems in OHB by comparing dental and non-dental students at Sichuan University. We hope to provide some suggestions for future OHE to improve people’s OHB. Methods A quasi-experimental study designed with a pre-test and post-test group was conducted. A total of 217 dental students and 135 non-dental students were enrolled. They were administered an OHE course focused on OHB. A survey about oral health behaviour and knowledge was conducted before and after the course. Results According to the pre-course survey, dental students surpassed non-dental students in terms of toothbrushing frequency, method, and time, but unfortunately, flossing was overlooked by all the students. After the course, both dental and non-dental students showed strong willingness to improve their OHB. More non-dental students than dental students were willing to use toothpicks and Chinese herbal toothpaste before and after the course. Conclusions OHE focused on behaviour has a positive effect on university students. Future OHE and interventions should focus on flossing, toothbrushing methods, toothpicks, Chinese herbal toothpaste and modifications to adopt new media.

Abstract Due to acromegaly’s insidious onset and slow progression, its diagnosis is usually delayed, thus causing severe complications and treatment difficulty. A convenient screening method is imperative. Based on our previous work, we herein developed a new automatic diagnosis and severity-classification model for acromegaly using facial photographs by deep learning on the data of 2148 photographs at different severity levels. Each photograph was given a score reflecting its severity (range 1~3). Our developed model achieved a prediction accuracy of 90.7% on the internal test dataset and outperformed the performance of ten junior internal medicine physicians (89.0%). The prospect of applying this model to real clinical practices is promising due to its potential health economic benefits.

Abstract Background Gingivitis is a common oral health problem, and untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis. The objectives of this study were to (1) explore associated factors of gingival bleeding and calculus among 12-year-old adolescents; (2) find predictive models for gingivitis management. Methods Four thousand five hundred twenty-five subjects aged 12 in Sichuan Province were investigated. The questionnaire and clinical examination were applied in schools, and two-level logistic regression models were constructed to interpret the effect of individual and contextual factors on Chinese adolescents’ gingival bleeding and calculus. Results 46.63% (95%CI: 40.71, 51.60) and 66.94% (95%CI: 56.85, 67.45) of the subjects presented gingival bleeding and calculus, respectively. For the gingival bleeding cases, the model showed the significant associated indicators were hukou (OR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.52–0.72), family size (OR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.19–1.68), parental educational level (father: OR = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.45–0.63; mother: OR = 0.71, 95% CI: 0.59–0.86), tooth-brushing frequency (OR = 0.35, 95% CI: 0.26–0.48), dental floss use (OR = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.41–0.83), sugar-containing drink consumption (OR = 2.11, 95% CI: 1.80–2.49), and dental visit (OR = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.19–1.74). It also confirmed that gender (OR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.13–1.54), hukou (OR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.59–0.82), family size (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.12–1.59), parental educational level (father: OR = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.39–0.54; mother: OR = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.59–0.82), tooth-brushing frequency (OR = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.42–0.78), dental floss use (OR = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.48–0.90) and sugar-containing drink consumption (OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.11–1.53) were associated factors for dental calculus. Conclusions Gingival bleeding and calculus were common in western Chinese adolescents. Socio-demographic factors including gender, hukou and family factors are strong determinants of gingival health in Chinese adolescents. In addition, health-related lifestyle behaviors such as healthy diet, good hygiene care and more dental visits are good predictors of better gingival status.

In many areas affected by climate change, agriculture is an industry sensitive to climate change. Many scholars have studied the relationship between climate factors and rice, but these studies did not quantitatively construct high temperature indicator and determine the threshold for high temperature hazard. In this paper, we constructed the index of high temperature intensity (HTI) based on the daily maximum temperature and high temperature days, and then used multiple regression analysis method to determine the hazard factor. Based on this, we can analyze the risk distribution of hazard factor for late rice in Zhejiang. The results showed that: (i) high temperature values and high temperature days above 35 °C during the growth period of late rice are the main meteorological factors for the decrease of late rice yield in Zhejiang Province. The high temperature intensity comprehensive index constructed in this paper can quantitatively evaluate the effect of high temperature on late rice yield; (ii) With the increase of the level of recurrence, the high temperature intensity spreads around Lishui City and Yunhe County, and the intensity of the hazard factor in central Zhejiang is higher than that in the surrounding area.

Recently, transistor scaling is approaching its physical limit, hindering the further development of the computing capability. In the post-Moore era, emerging logic and storage devices have been the fundamental hardware for expanding the capability of intelligent computing. In this article, the recent progress of ferroelectric devices for intelligent computing is reviewed. The material properties and electrical characteristics of ferroelectric devices are elucidated, followed by a discussion of novel ferroelectric materials and devices that can be used for intelligent computing. Ferroelectric capacitors, transistors, and tunneling junction devices used for low-power logic, high-performance memory, and neuromorphic applications are comprehensively reviewed and compared. In addition, to provide useful guidance for developing high-performance ferroelectric-based intelligent computing systems, the key challenges for realizing ultrascaled ferroelectric devices for high-efficiency computing are discussed.

Background: Acute high altitude (HA) exposure results in blood pressure (BP) variations in most subjects. Previous studies have demonstrated that higher BP is potentially correlated with acute mountain sickness (AMS). The BP load may be of clinical significance regarding systemic circulation status.Objectives: This study aimed to examine HA-induced BP changes in patients with AMS compared to those in healthy subjects. Further, we provided clinical information about the relationship between variations in 24-h ambulatory parameters (BP level, BP variability, and BP load) and AMS.Methods: Sixty-nine subjects were enrolled and all participants ascended Litang (4,100 m above sea level). They were monitored using a 24-h ambulatory blood pressure device and underwent echocardiography within 24 h of altitude exposure. The 2018 Lake Louise questionnaire was used to evaluate AMS.Results: The AMS group comprised more women than men [15 (65.2%) vs. 13 (28.3%), P < 0.001] and fewer smokers [4 (17.4%) vs. 23 (50.0%), P = 0.009]. The AMS group exhibited significant increases in 24-h BP compared to the non-AMS group (24-h SBP variation: 10.52 ± 6.48 vs. 6.03 ± 9.27 mmHg, P = 0.041; 24-h DBP variation: 8.70 ± 4.57 vs. 5.03 ± 4.98 mmHg, P = 0.004). The variation of mean 24-h cBPL (cumulative BP load) (mean 24-h cSBPL: 10.58 ± 10.99 vs. 4.02 ± 10.58, P = 0.016; 24-h mean cDBPL: 6.03 ± 5.87 vs. 2.89 ± 4.99, P = 0.034) was also obviously higher in AMS subjects than in non-AMS subjects after HA exposure. 24-h mean cSBPL variation (OR = 1.07, P = 0.024) and 24-h mean cDBPL variation (OR = 1.14, P = 0.034) were independent risk factors of AMS. Moreover, variation of 24-h mean cSBPL showed a good correlation with AMS score (R = 0.504, P < 0.001).Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that patients with AMS had higher BP and BP load changes after altitude exposure than healthy subjects. Excessive BP load variations were associated with AMS. Thus, BP load could be an effective indicator regarding systemic circulation status of AMS.

Purpose: Periodontal disease is potentially related to certain kinds of cancer. This review aimed to summarize the relationship between periodontal disease and breast cancer, providing some strategies for the clinical treatment and periodontal health care of breast cancer patients. Materials and Methods: Systematic reviews, randomised controlled trials, prospective and retrospective clinical studies, case series and reports were collected using search terms entered into the PubMed, Google Scholar and JSTOR databases. Results: Research has provided some evidence that periodontal disease is related to the occurrence and development of breast cancer. Periodontal disease and breast cancer have some common pathogenic factors. Periodontal disease may affect the initiation and development of breast cancer involving microorganisms and inflammation. Periodontal health is affected by radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and endocrine therapy for breast cancer. Conclusions: Periodontal therapy for breast cancer patients should be performed differently according to the stage of cancer treatment. Adjuvant endocrine treatment (e.g. bisphosphonates) has a great impact on oral treatment. Periodontal therapy contributes to the primary prevention of breast cancer. Periodontal health care of breast cancer patients is worthy of clinician attention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this research, micro Coix lacryma-jobi L. vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) were set up using domestic sewage (DWS) and 1/2 Hoagland nutrient solution (HNS) as VFCWs water sources. 0, 20 mg L−1 and 40 mg L−1 of Cr6+ (in the form of K2Cr7O2) were added into the water sources separately in order to study the response of Coix lacryma-jobi L. under Cr6+ stress. The results showed that the inhibition rates of Cr6 + on plant height, stem diameter, shoot and root dry weight treated with HNS were 2.88~10.16%, 5.12~11.86%, 3.53~6.51% and 2.89~6.34% higher than those in DWS treatment. SEM analysis showed that the nuclear bilayer membrane was slightly damaged, the chromatin decreased and the number of mitochondrial cristae decreased when treated with 20 mg L−1 of Cr6+, however, organelle damage was more severe under 40 mg L−1 of Cr6+exposure. The X-ray energy spectrum analysis results indicated that the accumulation of chromium in epidermis and endodermis were higher than those in stele. The contents of total Cr in roots, stems and leaves treated with HNS were higher than those of DWS treatment. The highest content of Cr was observed in cell wall (32.12–188.1 mg kg-1), followed by vacuole (5.0–38.14 mg kg-1). The contents of Cr in each subcellular component in roots, stems, and leaves treated with HNS were higher than those of DWS, except for organelle components in the 14th week. DWS was used as water influent, the contents of easily migrated combined Cr (ETM) in roots, stems and leaves were significantly lower than those in HNS treatment. Improving the nutritional conditions of constructed wetlands might be beneficial to the improvement of their ability to purify chrome-containing waste water.

We explore the use of superconducting quantum phase slip junctions (QPSJs), an electromagnetic dual to Josephson Junctions (JJs), in neuromorphic circuits. These small circuits could serve as the building blocks of neuromorphic circuits for machine learning applications because they exhibit desirable properties such as inherent ultra-low energy per operation, high speed, dense integration, negligible loss, and natural spiking responses. In addition, they have a relatively straight-forward micro/nano fabrication, which shows promise for implementation of an enormous number of lossless interconnections that are required to realize complex neuromorphic systems. We simulate QPSJ-only, as well as hybrid QPSJ + JJ circuits for application in neuromorphic circuits including artificial synapses and neurons, as well as fan-in and fan-out circuits. We also design and simulate learning circuits, where a simplified spike timing dependent plasticity rule is realized to provide potential learning mechanisms. We also take an alternative approach, which shows potential to overcome some of the expected challenges of QPSJ-based neuromorphic circuits, via QPSJ-based charge islands coupled together to generate non-linear charge dynamics that result in a large number of programmable weights or non-volatile memory states. Notably, we show that these weights are a function of the timing and frequency of the input spiking signals and can be programmed using a small number of DC voltage bias signals, therefore exhibiting spike-timing and rate dependent plasticity, which are mechanisms to realize learning in neuromorphic circuits.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) has been associated with changes in volatile metabolic profiles in several human biological matrices. This enables its non-invasive detection, but the origin of these volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and their relation to the gut microbiome are not yet fully understood. This systematic review provides an overview of the current understanding of this topic. A systematic search using PubMed, Embase, Medline, Cochrane Library, and the Web of Science according to PRISMA guidelines resulted in seventy-one included studies. In addition, a systematic search was conducted that identified five systematic reviews from which CRC-associated gut microbiota data were extracted. The included studies analyzed VOCs in feces, urine, breath, blood, tissue, and saliva. Eight studies performed microbiota analysis in addition to VOC analysis. The most frequently reported dysregulations over all matrices included short-chain fatty acids, amino acids, proteolytic fermentation products, and products related to the tricarboxylic acid cycle and Warburg metabolism. Many of these dysregulations could be related to the shifts in CRC-associated microbiota, and thus the gut microbiota presumably contributes to the metabolic fingerprint of VOC in CRC. Future research involving VOCs analysis should include simultaneous gut microbiota analysis.

The study was to investigate the effect of canonical and noncanonical pyroptosis in apical periodontitis. Proteins’ profiles of human apical periodontitis tissue were analyzed by label-free proteomics. Immunofluorescence was used to detect proteins related to pyroptosis in human apical periodontitis tissues and experimental apical periodontitis models. A dual experimental apical periodontitis model with both smaller (mandible) and larger (maxilla) bone lesions was established. THP-1-derived macrophages were stimulated with P. gingivalis lipopolysaccharide in vitro with or without the caspase-1/-4/-5 inhibitor Ac-FTDL-CMK. Propidium iodide staining, lactic dehydrogenase release and Western blot were applied to evaluate cell death and the protein expression. Caspase-1/-4/-5 were expressed in human apical periodontitis tissues. Caspase-1/-11 were involved in bone loss in experimental apical periodontitis. Caspase-1/-11 inhibitors reduced bone loss in larger lesions (maxilla) but accelerated bone loss in smaller lesions (mandible). Caspase-1/-4/-5 inhibitors also showed double-edged sword effects on propidium iodide staining and lactic dehydrogenase release in vitro. The expression of cleaved-caspase-1/-4/-5, mature interluekin-1β and gasdermin D N-terminal domain increased in THP-1-derived macrophages after lipopolysaccharide stimulation but decreased after treatment with Ac-FTDL-CMK. Pyroptosis contributed to apical periodontitis and excited a double-edged sword effect in inducing bone loss in vivo and cell death in vitro.

Aim: Metabolic syndrome (MS) screening is essential for the early detection of the occupational population. This study aimed to screen out biomarkers related to MS and establish a risk assessment and prediction model for the routine physical examination of an occupational population.Methods: The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) regression algorithm of machine learning was used to screen biomarkers related to MS. Then, the accuracy of the logistic regression model was further verified based on the Lasso regression algorithm. The areas under the receiving operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate the selection accuracy of biomarkers in identifying MS subjects with risk. The screened biomarkers were used to establish a logistic regression model and calculate the odds ratio (OR) of the corresponding biomarkers. A nomogram risk prediction model was established based on the selected biomarkers, and the consistency index (C-index) and calibration curve were derived.Results: A total of 2,844 occupational workers were included, and 10 biomarkers related to MS were screened. The number of non-MS cases was 2,189 and that of MS was 655. The area under the curve (AUC) value for non-Lasso and Lasso logistic regression was 0.652 and 0.907, respectively. The established risk assessment model revealed that the main risk biomarkers were absolute basophil count (OR: 3.38, CI:1.05–6.85), platelet packed volume (OR: 2.63, CI:2.31–3.79), leukocyte count (OR: 2.01, CI:1.79–2.19), red blood cell count (OR: 1.99, CI:1.80–2.71), and alanine aminotransferase level (OR: 1.53, CI:1.12–1.98). Furthermore, favorable results with C-indexes (0.840) and calibration curves closer to ideal curves indicated the accurate predictive ability of this nomogram.Conclusions: The risk assessment model based on the Lasso logistic regression algorithm helped identify MS with high accuracy in physically examining an occupational population.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods were grown on the surface of a polypropylene (PP) nonwoven fabric (NWF) using the low-temperature hydrothermal method. The finishing process was investigated, and the prepared PP NWF was characterized. Results of the scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, anti-ultraviolet (UV) properties, and energy dispersive spectrometry indicate that the ZnO nanorods can be synthesized and uniformly coated on the surface of the PP NWF. The UV-degradation behavior and antibacterial activity of 0.025 M zinc nitrate hexahydrate-treated PP NWFs was good, with an ultraviolet protection factor value exceeding 100. Furthermore, the ZnO nanorods can inhibit the photodegradation of PP NWF. No obvious cracks were found on the fiber surface under 72 h of UV-light irradiation. The longitudinal and cross-breaking strength reduction properties were enhanced substantially. The ZnO nanorod-coated PP NWF achieved 99.5% bacterial reduction of Staphylococcus aureus and 99.9% bacterial reduction of Escherichia coli.

Background: The coronavirus pneumonia is still spreading around the world. Much progress has been made in vaccine development, and vaccination will become an inevitable trend in the fight against this pandemic. However, the public acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination still remains uncertain.Methods: An anonymous questionnaire was used in Wen Juan Xing survey platform. All the respondents were divided into healthcare workers and non-healthcare workers. Multinomial logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the key sociodemographic, cognitive, and attitude associations among the samples of healthcare workers and non-healthcare workers.Results: A total of 2,580 respondents completed the questionnaire, including 1,329 healthcare workers and 1,251 non-healthcare workers. This study showed that 76.98% of healthcare workers accepted the COVID-19 vaccine, 18.28% workers were hesitant, and 4.74% workers were resistant. Among the non-healthcare workers, 56.19% workers received the COVID-19 vaccine, 37.57% workers were hesitant, and 6.24% workers were resistant. Among the healthcare workers, compared with vaccine recipients, vaccine-hesitant individuals were more likely to be female (AOR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.12–2.07); vaccine-resistant individuals were more likely to live in the suburbs (AOR = 2.81, 95% CI: 1.44–3.99) with an income of 10,000 RMB or greater (AOR = 2.00, 95% CI: 1.03–3.90). Among the non-healthcare workers, vaccine-hesitant individuals were more likely to be female (AOR = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.31–2.11); vaccine-resistant individuals were also more likely to be female (AOR = 1.87, 95% CI: 1.16–3.02) and older than 65 years (AOR = 4.96, 95% CI: 1.40–7.62). There are great differences between healthcare workers and non-healthcare workers in their cognition and attitude toward vaccines.Conclusions: Our study shows that healthcare workers are more willing to be vaccinated than non-healthcare workers. Current vaccine safety issues continue to be a major factor affecting public acceptance, and to expand vaccine coverage in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, appropriate vaccination strategies and immunization programs are essential, especially for non-healthcare workers.

Background: Acute high-altitude (HA) exposure results in blood pressure (BP) and cardiac function variations in most subjects, some of whom suffer from acute mountain sickness (AMS). Several previous studies have found that cardiovascular function indicators are potentially correlated with AMS.Objectives: This study aims to examine HA-induced cardiovascular adaptations in AMS patients and compare them with healthy subjects. It also aims to investigate the relationship between cardiovascular function indicators and AMS, as well as to provide some insightful information about the prevention and treatment of AMS.Methods: Seventy-two subjects were enrolled in this cohort study. All the subjects ascended Litang (4,100 m above sea level). They were monitored by a 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) device and underwent echocardiography examination within 24 h of altitude exposure. The 2018 Lake Louise questionnaire was used to evaluate AMS.Results: Acute mountain sickness group consisted of more women (17 [60.7%] vs. 10 [22.7%], p = 0.001) and fewer smokers (5 [17.9%] vs. 23 [52.3%], p = 0.003). Compared with subjects without AMS, subjects with AMS had lower pulse pressure (PP) (daytime PP, 45.23 ± 7.88 vs. 52.14 ± 4.75, p < 0.001; nighttime PP, 42.81 ± 5.92 vs. 49.39 ± 7.67, p < 0.001) and lower effective arterial elastance (Ea) (1.53 ± 0.24 vs. 1.73 ± 0.39, p = 0.023). Multivariate regression indicated that female sex (OR = 0.23, p = 0.024), lower daytime PP (OR = 0.86, p = 0.004), and lower Ea (OR = 0.03, p = 0.015) at low altitude (LA) were independent risk factors for AMS. Combined daytime PP and Ea at LA had a high predictive value for AMS (AUC = 0.873; 95% CI: 0.789–0.956). Correlation analysis showed that AMS-induced headache correlated with daytime PP (R = −0.401, p < 0.001) and nighttime PP at LA (R = −0.401, p < 0.001).Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that AMS patients had a lower PP and Ea at LA. These baseline indicators of vasodilation at LA were closely associated with AMS, which may explain the higher headache severity in subjects with higher PP at LA.
