This data article describes the detailed parameters for synthesizing mullite inverse opal photonic crystals via Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), as well as the detailed image analysis routine used to interpret the data obtained by the measurement of such photonic crystals, before and after the heat treatment, via Ptychographic X-ray Computed Tomography (PXCT). The data presented in this article are related to the research article by Furlan and co-authors entitled "Photonic materials for high-temperature applications: Synthesis and characterization by X-ray ptychographic tomography" (Furlan et al., 2018). The data include detailed information about the ALD super-cycle process to generate the ternary oxides inside a photonic crystal template, the raw data from supporting characterization techniques, as well as the full dataset obtained from PXCT. All the data herein described is publicly available in a Mendeley Data archive "Dataset of synthesis and characterization by PXCT of ALD-based mullite inverse opal photonic crystals" located at https://data.mendeley.com/datasets/zn49dsk7x6/1 for any academic, educational, or research purposes.

Zirconia nanoceramics are interesting materials for numerous high-temperature applications. Because their beneficial properties are mainly governed by the crystal and microstructure, it is essential to understand and control these features. The use of co-stabilizing agents in the sol-gel synthesis of zirconia submicro-particles should provide an effective tool for adjusting the particles’ size and shape. Furthermore, alumina-doping is expected to enhance the particles’ size and shape persistence at high temperatures, similar to what is observed in corresponding bulk ceramics. Dispersed alumina should inhibit grain growth by forming diffusion barriers, additionally impeding the martensitic phase transformation in zirconia grains. Here, alumina-doped zirconia particles with sphere-like shape and average diameters of 300 nm were synthesized using a modified sol-gel route employing icosanoic acid and hydroxypropyl cellulose as stabilizing agents. The particles were annealed at temperatures between 800 and 1200 degree Celsius and characterized by electron microscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray diffraction. Complementary elemental analyses confirmed the precise control over the alumina content (0–50 mol%) in the final product. Annealed alumina-doped particles showed more pronounced shape persistence after annealing at 1000 degree Celsius than undoped particles. Quantitative phase analyses revealed an increased stabilization of the tetragonal/cubic zirconia phase and a reduced grain growth with increasing alumina content. Elemental mapping indicated pronounced alumina segregation near the grain boundaries during annealing.

Photonic materials for high-temperature applications need to withstand temperatures usually higher than 1000 °C, whilst keeping their function. When exposed to high temperatures, such nanostructured materials are prone to detrimental morphological changes, however the structure evolution pathway of photonic materials and its correlation with the loss of material's function is not yet fully understood. Here we use high-resolution ptychographic X-ray computed tomography (PXCT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the structural changes in mullite inverse opal photonic crystals produced by a very-low-temperature (95 °C) atomic layer deposition (ALD) super-cycle process. The 3D structural changes caused by the high-temperature exposure were quantified and associated with the distinct structural features of the ceramic photonic crystals. Other than observed in photonic crystals produced via powder colloidal suspensions or sol-gel infiltration, at high temperatures of 1400 °C we detected a mass transport direction from the nano pores to the shells. We relate these different structure evolution pathways to the presence of hollow vertexes in our ALD-based inverse opal photonic crystals. Although the periodically ordered structure is distorted after sintering, the mullite inverse opal photonic crystal presents a photonic stopgap even after heat treatment at 1400 °C for 100 h.

A preparation strategy is developed for monolithic samples of nanoporous gold with a hierarchical structure comprising two nested networks of solid "ligaments" on distinctly different structural length scales. The electrochemical dealloying protocol achieves a large retention of less noble element in a first corrosion step, thereby allowing an extra corrosion step which forms a separate structural hierarchy level. The beneficial impact of adding Pt to the Ag-Au master alloys that are more conventionally used in dealloying approaches to nanoporous gold is demonstrated. At ≈6 nm, the lower hierarchy level ligament size emerges extremely small. Furthermore, Pt favors the retention of Ag during the first dealloying step even when the master alloy has a high Au content. The high Au content reduces the corrosion-induced shrinkage, mitigating crack formation during preparation and favoring the formation of high-quality macroscopic (mm-sized) samples. The corrosion effectively carves out the nanoscale hierarchical ligament structure from the parent crystals tens of micrometers in size. This is revealed by X-ray as well as electron backscatter diffraction, which shows that the porous crystallites inherit the highly ordered, macroscopic crystal lattice structure of the master alloy.

Biomaterials often display outstanding combinations of mechanical properties thanks to their hierarchical structuring, which occurs through a dynamically and biologically controlled growth and self-assembly of their main constituents, typically mineral and protein. However, it is still challenging to obtain this ordered multiscale structural organization in synthetic 3D-nanocomposite materials. Herein, we report a new bottom-up approach for the synthesis of macroscale hierarchical nanocomposite materials in a single step. By controlling the content of organic phase during the self-assembly of monodisperse organically-modified nanoparticles (iron oxide with oleyl phosphate), either purely supercrystalline or hierarchically structured supercrystalline nanocomposite materials are obtained. Beyond a critical concentration of organic phase, a hierarchical material is consistently formed. In such a hierarchical material, individual organically-modified ceramic nanoparticles (Level 0) self-assemble into supercrystals in face-centered cubic superlattices (Level 1), which in turn form granules of up to hundreds of micrometers (Level 2). These micrometric granules are the constituents of the final mm-sized material. This approach demonstrates that the local concentration of organic phase and nano-building blocks during self-assembly controls the final material's microstructure, and thus enables the fine-tuning of inorganic-organic nanocomposites' mechanical behavior, paving the way towards the design of novel high-performance structural materials.

The Full Event Interpretation is presented: a new exclusive tagging algorithm used by the high-energy physics experiment Belle II. The experimental setup of Belle II allows the precise measurement of otherwise inaccessible $B$ meson decay-modes. The Full Event Interpretation algorithm enables many of these measurements. The algorithm relies on machine learning to automatically identify plausible $B$ meson decay chains based on the data recorded by the detector. Compared to similar algorithms employed by previous experiments, the Full Event Interpretation provides a greater efficiency, yielding a larger effective sample size usable in the measurement., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

We use a dynamic scanning electron microscope (DySEM) to map the spatial distribution of the vibration of a cantilever beam. The DySEM measurements are based on variations of the local secondary electron signal within the imaging electron beam diameter during an oscillation period of the cantilever. For this reason, the surface of a cantilever without topography or material variation does not allow any conclusions about the spatial distribution of vibration due to a lack of dynamic contrast. In order to overcome this limitation, artificial structures were added at defined positions on the cantilever surface using focused ion beam lithography patterning. The DySEM signal of such high-contrast structures is strongly improved, hence information about the surface vibration becomes accessible. Simulations of images of the vibrating cantilever have also been performed. The results of the simulation are in good agreement with the experimental images.

Herein we report on how to render Ti3C2Tx (MXene) monolayers deposited on SiO2/Si wafers, with different SiO2 thicknesses, visible. Inputting the effective thickness of a Ti3C2Tx monolayer (1 ± 0.2 nm) measured by atomic force microscopy, and its refractive index into a Fresnel-law-based simulation software, we show that the optical contrast of Ti3C2Tx monolayers deposited on SiO2/Si wafers depends on the SiO2 thickness, number of MXene layers, and the light’s wavelength. The highest contrast was found for SiO2 thicknesses around 220 nm. Simulations for other substrates, namely, Al2O3/Si, HfO2/Si, Si3N4/Si and Al2O3/Al, are presented as supplementary information.

Control of thermal radiation at high temperatures is vital for waste heat recovery and for high-efficiency thermophotovoltaic (TPV) conversion. Previously, structural resonances utilizing gratings, thin film resonances, metasurfaces and photonic crystals were used to spectrally control thermal emission, often requiring lithographic structuring of the surface and causing significant angle dependence. In contrast, here, we demonstrate a refractory W-HfO2 metamaterial, which controls thermal emission through an engineered dielectric response function. The epsilon-near-zero frequency of a metamaterial and the connected optical topological transition (OTT) are adjusted to selectively enhance and suppress the thermal emission in the near-infrared spectrum, crucial for improved TPV efficiency. The near-omnidirectional and spectrally selective emitter is obtained as the emission changes due to material properties and not due to resonances or interference effects, marking a paradigm shift in thermal engineering approaches. We experimentally demonstrate the OTT in a thermally stable metamaterial at high temperatures of 1,000 °C.

We describe the conversion of simulated and recorded data by the Belle experiment to the Belle~II format with the software package \texttt{b2bii}. It is part of the Belle~II Analysis Software Framework. This allows the validation of the analysis software and the improvement of analyses based on the recorded Belle dataset using newly developed analysis tools.

In modern High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments visualization of experimental data has a key role in many activities and tasks across the whole data chain: from detector development to monitoring, from event generation to reconstruction of physics objects, from detector simulation to data analysis, and all the way to outreach and education. In this paper, the definition, status, and evolution of data visualization for HEP experiments will be presented. Suggestions for the upgrade of data visualization tools and techniques in current experiments will be outlined, along with guidelines for future experiments.
