International audience; Biological nitrogen removal via Anammox is an advantageous technology in the nitrogen treatment effluents with a low Carbon/Nitrogen ratio, a process that makes this route interesting for the most different types of industries, agribusinesses, and urban effluent treatment plants. Achieving robust Anammox biomass for use in full-scale plants is still a challenge that motivates studies of biomass enrichment and the search for kinetic parameters of substrate consumption rate that help optimize the conduction of reactors. According to the previously mentioned, this work aimed to carry out the kinetic study of nitrogen consumption by the Anammox process in a membrane aerated biofilm reactors operated in sequential batches (MABR-BS). 6 MABR-BS reactors were used, each one of them inoculated with a specific Anammox sludge, obtained from the enrichment of anaerobic and aerobic sludges coming from 3 different sludge sources, namely, a municipal wastewater treatment plant, a landfill leachate treatment plant, and a swine slaughterhouse effluent treatment plant. For the kinetic study, 6 reactors were used, made in glass flasks with a total volume of 1L, with a useful volume of 500 mL, with the 300:200mL ratio between synthetic effluent (with 100mgN-NH4 + .L-1) and sludge from the sources: R1anaerobic sludge from a UASB reactor for urban sewage treatment; R2-mixed sludge from a UASB reactor, consisting of waste sludge and supernatant scum; R3-anaerobic sludge from landfill leachate treatment; R4-mixed sludge consisting of aerobic and anaerobic sludge from landfill leachate treatment plant; R5-anaerobic sludge from the swine slaughter effluent treatment plant and R6-aerobic and anaerobic sludge from the swine slaughter effluent treatment plant. The experimental apparatus had 3 aerators coupled to 3 flowmeters with an air flow regulated at 1.

The rapid growth of anthropogenic activities in recent decades has resulted in the appearance of numerous new chemical compounds in the environment, known as “emerging pollutants” (EPs) or “contaminants of emerging concern” (CECs). Although partially or not yet regulated or monitored, there is growing research interest in these EPs among the scientific community because of their bioaccumulation, persistence, and adverse effects. Among these, endocrine disruptors, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals can have harmful impacts on human health and the ecosystem. Conventional wastewater treatment technologies are not effective in removing these contaminants, allowing them to be released into the receiving environment. In order to improve the understanding of emerging pollutants, this review discusses the source, occurrence, and impacts of bisphenol A, atrazine, amoxicillin, and paracetamol as model molecules of emerging environmental pollutants, an issue that remains underrepresented in Morocco. Then, treatment methods for EPs are reviewed, including adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, biodegradation, and hybrid treatment. It is proposed that adsorption and photocatalysis can be used as simple, effective, and environmentally friendly technologies for their removal. Thus, we summarize some of the adsorbent and photocatalyst materials applied in recent work to control these pollutants. Towards the end of this paper, the development of inexpensive and locally available (Morocco) materials to remove these compounds from wastewater is considered.

All patients aged ≥45 hospitalized for COPD between 2007 and 2015 were identified in a 1/97th, random sample of French claims data. Patients receiving dual therapy within 60 days after hospitalization were compared to patients receiving triple therapy, after propensity score matching on disease severity.Results: Of the 3,089 patients hospitalized for COPD, 1,538 (49.8%) received either dual or triple therapy in the 2 months following inclusion, and 1,500 (48.6%) had at least 30 days of follow-up available; 846 (27.4%) received dual therapy, and 654 (21.2%) received triple therapy. After matching, the number of exacerbations was 2.4 per year in the dual vs 2.3 in the triple group (p=0.45). Among newly treated patients (n=206), persistence at 12 months was similar in the dual and triple groups (48% vs 41%, respectively, p=0.37). As compared to patients on dual therapy, more patients on triple therapy received oral corticosteroids (49.1 vs 40.4%, p=0.003) or were hospitalized for any reason (67%vs 55.8%, p=0.0001) or for COPD (35.3 vs 25.1%, p=0.0002) during follow-up. Cost of care was higher for patients on triple than for those on dual therapy (€11,877.1 vs €9,825.1, p=0.01).Conclusion: Following hospitalizations for COPD, patients on dual and triple therapy experienced recurrent exacerbations, limited adherence to therapies and high cost of care. Patients on triple therapy appeared more severe than those on dual therapy, as reflected by exacerbations and health care resource use.Keywords: COPD, therapy, persistence, exacerbations, health care resource use

INTRODUCTION: DLL3, an atypical Notch ligand, is expressed in SCLC tumors but is not detectable in normal adult tissues. Rovalpituzumab tesirine (Rova-T) is an antibody-drug conjugate containing a DLL3-targeting antibody tethered to a cytotoxic agent pyrrolobenzodiazepine by means of a protease-cleavable linker. The efficacy and safety of Rova-T compared with topotecan as second-line therapy in patients with SCLC expressing high levels of DLL3 (DLL3-high) was evaluated. METHODS: The TAHOE study was an open-label, two-to-one randomized, phase 3 study comparing Rova-T with topotecan as second-line therapy in DLL3-high advanced or metastatic SCLC. Rova-T (0.3 mg/kg) was administered intravenously on day 1 of a 42-day cycle for two cycles, with two additional cycles available to patients who met protocol-defined criteria for continued dosing. Topotecan (1.5 mg/m2) was administered intravenously on days 1 to 5 of a 21-day cycle. The primary end point was overall survival (OS). RESULTS: Patients randomized to Rova-T (n = 296) and topotecan (n = 148) were included in the efficacy analyses. The median age was 64 years, and 77% had the extensive disease at initial diagnosis. The median OS (95% confidence interval) was 6.3 months (5.6-7.3) in the Rova-T arm and 8.6 months (7.7-10.1) in the topotecan arm (hazard ratio, 1.46 [95% confidence interval: 1.17-1.82]). An independent data monitoring committee recommended that enrollment be discontinued because of the shorter OS observed with Rova-T compared with topotecan. Safety profiles for both drugs were consistent with previous reports. CONCLUSIONS: Compared with topotecan, which is the current standard second-line chemotherapy, Rova-T exhibited an inferior OS and higher rates of serosal effusions, photosensitivity reaction, and peripheral edema in patients with SCLC.
