- Abstract
There is growing interest in the use of models that recognise the role of individuals’ attitudes and perceptions in choice behaviour. Rather than relying on simple linear approaches or a potentially bias-inducing deterministic approach based on incorporating stated attitudinal indicators directly in the choice model, researchers have recently recognised the latent nature of attitudes. The uptake of such latent attitude models in applied work has however been slow, while a number of overly simplistic assumptions are also commonly made. In this article, we present an application of jointly estimated attitudinal and choice models to a real-world transport study, looking at the role of latent attitudes in a rail travel context. Our results show the impact that concern with privacy, liberty and security, and distrust of business, technology and authority have on the desire for rail travel in the face of increased security measures, as well as for universal security checks. Alongside demonstrating the applicability of the model in applied work, we also address a number of theoretical issues. We first show the equivalence of two different normalisations discussed in the literature. Unlike many other latent attitude studies, we explicitly recognise the repeated choice nature of the data. Finally, the main methodological contribution comes in replacing the typically used continuous model for attitudinal response by an ordered logit structure which more correctly accounts for the ordinal nature of the indicators., Transport and Infrastructure, OTB Research Institute for the Built Environment

PHOTOVOLTAIC cells ,QUANTUM wells ,INDIUM ,GALLIUM ,ARSENIC - Abstract
Multi-quantum well photovoltaic cells offer a number of advantages over conventional "singlegap" cells for thermophotovoltaic applications, first of all because they can reach a higher open circuit voltage under the same radiation source and with the same absorption edge. Material quality issues and the constraints imposed by the commercial available substrates indicate that In[sub x]Ga[sub 1-x]As/In[sub y]Ga[sub 1-y]As/InP strainbalanced heterostructures are suitable to obtain good quality multi-quantum wells with an absorption edge just below 2.0 μm. Structural stability in the presence of a high density of elastic energy such as in the case of a strain-balanced multi-layer is a very important issue to be addressed by optimising key parameters like composition, thickness of wells and barriers and number of periods. In this paper we present and discuss the mechanisms of plastic relaxation of these structures with a particular attention to the impact of the extended defects generated by the local breakdown of the crystal lattice to the electrical properties of the devices. Then, after the presentation of the optimum structure with an absorption edge at 1.96 μm, we discuss the issue of a further extension of the absorption edge through the use of a so-called virtual substrate, that is a buffer structure between the substrate and the device designed to relax to a given extent with a minimum number of dislocations propagating towards the active region. On the basis of a recipe based on the experimental results on InGaAs single and multi-layers grown on GaAs, we have designed a series of stepgraded buffer structures providing good virtual substrates with a lattice parameter larger than GaAs. Strainbalanced multi-quantum wells have been grown on In[sub x]Ga[sub 1-x]As virtual substrates with 0. 14 < x < 0.35 with a residual density of threading dislocations of about 10[sup 5] cm[sup -2]. Work is in progress to remove the residual morphological undulation... [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LIQUID argon ,TIME projection chambers (Nuclear physics) ,LASER beams ,CALIBRATION ,FEASIBILITY studies ,UNIVERSITY of Bern (Bern, Switzerland) - Abstract
Abstract: A comprehensive R&D program on LAr Time Projection Chambers (LAr TPC) is presently being carried out at the University of Bern. Many aspects of this technology are under investigation: HV, purity, calibration, readout, etc. Furthermore, multi-photon interaction of UV-laser beams with LAr has successfully been measured. Possible applications of the LAr TPC technology in the field of homeland security are also being studied. In this paper, the main aspects of the program will be reviewed and the achievements underlined. Emphasis will be given to the largest device in Bern, i.e. the 5 m long ARGONTUBE TPC, meant to prove the feasibility of very long drifts in view of future large scale applications of the technique. - Abstract
Few studies examine how the gendered nature of aging impacts young adults--shaping their images of later life, attitudes toward elderly persons, aging anxieties, and conceptions of the start of 'old age.' We examine gender differences in young adults' views of elders and the aging process using a survey of college students and content analysis of student-drawn sketches of elders (N = 391). Results indicate that both genders hold more positive images of elderly women than men; however, they view 'old age' as beginning at a younger age for women. In addition, we find that, compared with men, women report later starts of 'old age' for both genders and more favorable attitudes toward elders, but also greater aging anxiety. The square pyramidal bis[n-butyl 2-oxophenyl ketone]nickel(II) complex16 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c, while the square planar chloro(phenyl)nickel(II) complex19 with an ester group in the 2-position crystallizes in the triclinic space group P&onemacr;. Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LArTPCs) have been selected for the future long-baseline Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). To allow LArTPCs to operate in the high-multiplicity near detector environment of DUNE, a new charge readout technology is required. Traditional charge readout technologies introduce intrinsic ambiguities, combined with a slow detector response, these ambiguities have limited the performance of LArTPCs, until now. Here, we present a novel pixelated charge readout that enables the full 3D tracking capabilities of LArTPCs. We characterise the signal to noise ratio of charge readout chain, to be about 14, and demonstrate track reconstruction on 3D space points produced by the pixel readout. This pixelated charge readout makes LArTPCs a viable option for the DUNE near detector complex., 13 pages, 9 figures

ProtoDUNE-SP is the single-phase DUNE Far Detector prototype that is under construction and will be operated at the CERN Neutrino Platform (NP) starting in 2018. ProtoDUNE-SP, a crucial part of the DUNE effort towards the construction of the first DUNE 10-kt fiducial mass far detector module (17 kt total LAr mass), is a significant experiment in its own right. With a total liquid argon (LAr) mass of 0.77 kt, it represents the largest monolithic single-phase LArTPC detector to be built to date. It's technical design is given in this report., 165 pages, fix references, author list and minor numbers

A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig++ (version 2.7) is now available. This version comes with a number of improvements including: an interface to the Universal FeynRules Output (UFO) format allowing the simulation of a wide range of new-physics models; developments of the Matchbox framework for next-to-leading order (NLO) simulations; better treatment of QCD radiation in heavy particle decays in new-physics models; a new tune of underlying event and colour connection parameters that allows a good simultaneous description of both Tevatron and LHC underlying event data and the effective cross-section parameter for double-parton scattering., erwig++

We measure a large set of observables in inclusive charged current muon neutrino scattering on argon with the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber operating at Fermilab. We evaluate three neutrino interaction models based on the widely used GENIE event generator using these observables. The measurement uses a data set consisting of neutrino interactions with a final state muon candidate fully contained within the MicroBooNE detector. These data were collected in 2016 with the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam, which has an average neutrino energy of $$800~\hbox {MeV}$$ 800 MeV , using an exposure corresponding to $$ 5.0\times 10^{19}$$ 5.0 × 10 19 protons-on-target. The analysis employs fully automatic event selection and charged particle track reconstruction and uses a data-driven technique to separate neutrino interactions from cosmic ray background events. We find that GENIE models consistently describe the shapes of a large number of kinematic distributions for fixed observed multiplicity.

This white paper describes LAr1-ND and the compelling physics it brings ?first in Phase 1 and next towards the full LAr1 program. In addition, LAr1-ND serves as a key step in the development toward large-scale LArTPC detectors. Its development goals will encompass testing existing and possibly innovative designs for LBNE while at the same time providing a training ground for teams working towards LBNE combining timely neutrino physics with experience in detector development.
