Fast phase-contrast imaging offered by modern synchrotron facilities opens the possibility of imaging dynamic processes of biological material such as cells. Cells are mainly composed of carbon and hydrogen, which have low X-ray attenuation, making cell studies with X-ray tomography challenging. At specific low energies, cells provide contrast, but cryo-conditions are required to protect the sample from radiation damage. Thus, non-toxic labelling methods are needed to prepare living cells for X-ray tomography at higher energies. We propose using iron oxide nanoparticles due to their proven compatibility in other biomedical applications. We show how to synthesize and attach iron oxide nanoparticles and demonstrate that cell-penetrating peptides facilitate iron oxide nanoparticle uptake into sperm cells. In this study, we present the first simulation results of the formation of dislocation cell wall microstructures in tantalum subjected to shock loading. Dislocation patterns and cell wall formation are important to understanding the mechanical properties of the materials in which they spontaneously arise, and yet the processing and self-assembly mechanisms leading to their formation are poorly understood. By employing transmission electron microscopy and discrete dislocation dynamics, we propose a new mechanism involving coplanar dislocations and pseudo-dipole mixed dislocation arrays that is essential to the pattern formation process. Our large-scale 3D DDD simulations demonstrate the self-organization of dislocation networks into cell walls in deformed BCC metal (tantalum) persisting at the strain 20%. The simulation analysis captures several crucial aspects of how the dislocation cell pattern affects metal plasticity, as observed in experiments. Although experimental evidence is inconclusive regarding whether cell wall formation takes place at the shock front, after the shock, during release, or when the sample has had enough time to relax post-recovery, our simulations indicate cell wall formation occurs after the shock and before release. The extended Taylor hardening composite model effectively considers the non-uniform dislocation density when cell walls form and accurately describes the corresponding flow stress.

Customer churn describes terminating a relationship with a business or reducing customer engagement over a specific period. Customer acquisition cost can be five to six times that of customer retention, hence investing in customers with churn risk is wise. Causal analysis of the churn model can predict whether a customer will churn in the foreseeable future and identify effects and possible causes for churn. In general, this study presents a conceptual framework to discover the confounding features that correlate with independent variables and are causally related to those dependent variables that impact churn. We combine different algorithms including the SMOTE, ensemble ANN, and Bayesian networks to address churn prediction problems on a massive and high-dimensional finance data that is usually generated in financial institutions due to employing interval-based features used in Customer Relationship Management systems. The effects of the curse and blessing of dimensionality assessed by utilising the Recursive Feature Elimination method to overcome the high dimension feature space problem. Moreover, a causal discovery performed to find possible interpretation methods to describe cause probabilities that lead to customer churn. Evaluation metrics on validation data confirm the random forest and our ensemble ANN model, with %86 accuracy, outperformed other approaches. Causal analysis results confirm that some independent causal variables representing the level of super guarantee contribution, account growth, and account balance amount were identified as confounding variables that cause customer churn with a high degree of belief. Irregularly measured time series are common in many of the applied settings in which time series modelling is a key statistical tool, including medicine. This provides challenges in model choice, often necessitating imputation or similar strategies. Continuous time autoregressive recurrent neural networks (CTRNNs) are a deep learning model that account for irregular observations through incorporating continuous evolution of the hidden states between observations. This is achieved using a neural ordinary differential equation (ODE) or neural flow layer. In this manuscript, we give an overview of these models, including the varying architectures that have been proposed to account for issues such as ongoing medical interventions. Further, we demonstrate the application of these models to probabilistic forecasting of blood glucose in a critical care setting using electronic medical record and simulated data. The experiments confirm that addition of a neural ODE or neural flow layer generally improves the performance of autoregressive recurrent neural networks in the irregular measurement setting. However, several CTRNN architecture are outperformed by an autoregressive gradient boosted tree model (Catboost), with only a long short-term memory (LSTM) and neural ODE based architecture (ODE-LSTM) achieving comparable performance on probabilistic forecasting metrics such as the continuous ranked probability score (ODE-LSTM: 0.118$\pm$0.001; Catboost: 0.118$\pm$0.001), ignorance score (0.152$\pm$0.008; 0.149$\pm$0.002) and interval score (175$\pm$1; 176$\pm$1).

Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technologies have the potential to improve the lives of millions of people around the world, whether through assistive technologies or clinical diagnostic tools. Despite advancements in the field, however, at present consumer and clinical viability remains low. A key reason for this is that many of the existing BCI deployments require substantial data collection per end-user, which can be cumbersome, tedious, and error-prone to collect. We address this challenge via a deep learning model, which, when trained across sufficient data from multiple subjects, offers reasonable performance out-of-the-box, and can be customized to novel subjects via a transfer learning process. We demonstrate the fundamental viability of our approach by repurposing an older but well-curated electroencephalography (EEG) dataset and benchmarking against several common approaches/techniques. We then partition this dataset into a transfer learning benchmark and demonstrate that our approach significantly reduces data collection burden per-subject.
